Dr Az Hakeem on Detrans: When transition is not the solution
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In this discussion Dr Az Hakeem presents a compelling case against transition and respondent Ritchie Heron bravely tells his own harrowing story. Jennifer Lahl from Genspect USA adds fascinating insights.
Until the Cass Review at least, the presumption seemed to be for healthcare interventions to ‘affirm’ the person’s preferred gender and help them to transition, often in a physically irreversible way. But what if someone who makes a gender transition later changes their mind? What if they regret making irreversible physical changes to their body?
Dr Az Hakeem is one of the first clinicians to write about the modern explosion in trans identification from outside the ‘gender affirmative’ paradigm. In his new book, DETRANS: When transition is not the solution, he uses his background in providing psychiatry and psychotherapy services to adults who experience gender dysphoria to explore and give voice to the first-hand experiences of those detransitioners and desisters for whom gender transition was not the hoped-for solution or panacea.
The reality is that many can and do regret hormones and surgery. But this is still a largely hidden story, with too little public attention paid to those living with the consequences of irreversible medical interventions - including infertility, bone damage and loss of sexual sensation. Additionally, abuse and hostility aimed at those detransitioners brave enough to ‘come out’ has added to a silencing of these stories.
The speakers in this meet the author session are:
Dr Az Hakeem: consulting psychiatrist; author, Trans and Detrans
Ritchie Herron: writer, activist and advocate
Jennifer Lahl: founder, Center for Bioethics and Culture; program director, Genspect USA
The chair is: Ceri Dingle director, WORLDwrite and WORLDbytes
This video was filmed and edited by WORLDwrite volunteers attending the Battle of Ideas Festival 24. These are the introductory speeches only. To avoid duplication, the full debate will feature on the Academy of Ideas UA-cam channel shortly.
WORLDwrite volunteers filmed over 40 sessions at the Battle of Ideas 24.

It’s a shame that Trans activists and supporters of trans ideology refuse to take part in debates and worse still only try to shut them down or besmirch people like Dr Az & Ritchie for calling out what’s going on. The Battle of Ideas is to be commended for giving a platform to the voices of reason when most won’t.
It sure as hell doesn't lend them credibility!
It might threaten their victim status. I've watched hundreds of hours of people discussing their experiences concerning this topic on Benjamin Boyce's YT channel.
Conversion therapy has an existing consensus in the literature and people that agree with this clown don't understand the literature.
@@AndyJarman Yes, I have watched some of Boyce's interviews. Very well done I think.
Ritchie is one of my favorites. I just really like him. He is clear, and easy to listen to.
I argue with these "pro-trans" people quite a lot online.
It gets frustrating, and tiring.
How many times do I have to keep saying the obvious - "Men are not Women."
Richie.. your opinion truly matters and experience is gratefully acknowledged. its just slow as hell to be heard as people are stubborn. Say it as is truth. And know that one person at a time counts..
So many are struggling with this too. You are not alone..Bravo for your heroic and candid story telling.
I LOVE Ritchie using correct anatomical language as to what happened to him. More of this needs to occur and be open dialogue. Thank you. ❤️🇬🇧❌❌
So true. It's castration, genital mutilation and mastectomy. Calling it 'top' and 'bottom' surgery trivialises this invasive, irreversible surgery.
Yes, I like Ritchie a lot. He is a very good communicator. Down to earth guy.
I have seen him talk a few times.
Ritchie is a real hero.
I love Richie, I've been following his story since he went public.
Thank you, Richard, deeply touched by your pain and path 😣and your couragous testimony
Thank you, Dr. Az .. that's the help people actually need! find words for their personal feelings of discomfort. What a pity, that the medical industry has other purposes than healing.
Hope you are doing well, Ritchie!
This is very good and shocking. Thank you
Thank you for your voices.
❤ what an excellent speed-lecture. ❤
Thank god for this man thank god for his book I shall be purchasing it ,
BRAVO !!....
Link to the full conference please
Hi there The full conference programme which our charity volunteers filmed at is at www.battleofideas.org.uk/ We are providing videos of full sessions to their team and hopefully at some point they will upload these to their channel. We are only putting up intros to avoid duplication on UA-cam. Their channel is at www.youtube.com/@battleofideas
Ok if I have time
Aren’t activists pushing these ideas on young children and in schools? They seem to be pushing this very hard. It’s a shame because lids are so receptive. Ans innocent.
Hunderds and no one could describe what a woman is except for referring to externals, like long hair and dresses....
Okay, but what about dysphoria about genitals, breast/chest, facial hair, broad shoulders, curvy bodies etc.? How masculine or feminine the body looks and the type of genitals?
I'm a woman and imagining myself with a penis and a beard etc. disgusts me. I can't imagine this feeling changing. I imagine trans people feel like this.
Intro too long
As a non native speaker of English, that man's accent is so difficult to understand... and I've usually have no problem with British accents
Nothing wrong with his accent he speaks clearly I understand everything he says some people choose not to hear what they don't want to hear and make an excuse and blame the accent
@robertgibson1036 did I even say I didn't agree with what he's saying? Was reading too much into other people's comments always one of your hobbies or is it new?
Very dishonest to call this a “battle of ideas” when it’s basically a lovefest between 3 people who agree on everything. What kind of “battle of ideas” about trans issues has no current trans people or anyone with a pro-trans or even moderate perspective?
Are you serious? The Battle of ideas festival is an event that take a whole weekend. You are the one dishonest and lazy if you do not at least google anything about the festival and just shoot at these 30 minutes from the whole 2 days event. So pathetic.
There is nothing dishonest about opposing viewpoints. Having the courage to go against the current is needed to show the world that the pro-trans ideology is not the be all and end all.
I am a Detransitioned butch lesbian and there are those of us who will not be silenced.
I imagine that no matter what is said in explanation will always be in contention but Freedom of speech comes with the consequence of someone be offended
Perhaps you should have been there to offer your perspective. My impression is that most people who call themselves trans would only want to address an audience that shares in their delusion. Ideally children.
Because they aren't platformed anywhere else.
These people are very, very pro-trans people (gender non-conforming peoples).
This is very much a moderate perspective.
1, Richie Heron is a detransitioner, so is therefore "trans".
2, So called trans activists won't attend these meetings despite being invited. Bring your feedback to them and ask them why they apparently don't believe in their arguments enough to attend this battle of ideas, or any debate on the issue for that matter.
Should frankenscience ever happen?
Remember what Hitler did to disabled kids. Modern day Communists/Socialists are all for this abuse. Very sad and glad things are starting to swing back to normality.
