    I agree with this reading of Auron. You don't necessarily see it this way on a first playthrough, but going through the game more than once it becomes harder and harder NOT to see Auron as simply prioritizing his revenge through the whole journey.
    If you think about it, his actions can be viewed as pretty selfishly motivated by revenge from the very start. His goal is to kill Yunalesca (for good) and to undermine and destroy Yevon.
    But he doesn't know for sure that there will be another viable option to defeat Sin once the final summoning is gone. He's hoping there will be another path, but he can't know that for sure. But he'd rather destroy Yunalesca and Yevon to get his revenge, even if it might doom the world to facing Sin forever.
    And think about how he sets this up. He reveals to Tidus that Sin is Jecht, but doesn't reveal to him that the final summoning ritual would kill Yuna. Because if Tidus knew the truth about the final summoning he might discourage Yuna from continuing the pilgrimage. And if she agreed with Tidus, then they wouldn't reach Yunalesca.
    Meanwhile, Auron also doesn't tell Yuna that Sin is Jecht, or that the final Summoning requires the life of a guardian to become a fayth. Because he knows that she greatly respected Jecht from her memories of him when she was a child. And he knows that Yuna sees her guardian members (Wakka, Lulu, Kimarhi) as her family.
    He's purposely withholding important pieces of information from different members of the party in order to ensure they don't reconsider reaching Yunalesca in Zanarkand.
    If the Bikanel Island secnario and Wedding crash in Bevelle scenario didn't happen (which were both unplanned), Auron might not have even revealed that Sin is Jecht until right before they reached Yunalesca.
    In fact Yuna only discovers that Sin is Jecht after Seymour indirectly reveals it with a line to Tidus on Mt. Gagazet. And when Yuna repeats Seymours line, Auron responds with: "Lies. Forget them."
    It's possible that might not have ever told Yuna the truth about SIn being Jecht at all because he didn't think she would continue on to face Yunalesca if she knew the truth.
    He's also very concerned about Yuna potentially marrying Seymour at first, but once he's assured that she will continue the pilgrimage he backs off and doesn't object at all.

    • @SLRsquared
      @SLRsquared 6 днів тому +11

      I disagree, Auron is not motivated by revenge at all when the story takes place. His revenge ended when he was killed by Yunalesca and his primary motive for staying “alive” has been to keep Jecht and Braska’s promise. If he was solely motivated by revenge then he would have gone to the farplane after Tidus defeated Yunalesca. Maintaining his promises also ensured the story’s resolution.
      Auron said it himself during the fight with Yunalesca to completely contrast the setbacks of his story, they had to make theirs. The cast had to learn the truth on their own in order to draft their own solutions, his death is a perfect example of that. If he had been transparent from the start who’s to say that they would have even embarked on the pilgrimage? The cycle would have never been broken. You also have to factor in how deeply religion governs this world’s culture. You’re talking about dismantling an entire reality for these people and I doubt anyone would have believed him until they saw it with their own eyes (you think Wakka’s stubborn ass would have believed the truth at the beginning?)… plus the cast experienced Yevon’s corruption firsthand during their journey which ultimately influenced their final decisions.
      As far as Tidus goes, I don’t think the truth would have served him well either in the beginning. Tidus needed to develop and grow and understand the world he was placed in. Telling him Jecht was Sin without context would have also derailed his path. Same with Yuna.
      Without Auron’s preservation, the cast would have never developed the context and growth they needed to finally put a stop to Yu Yevon. The story’s themes and narrative is meant to drive the idea that decisions and character determine control, growth and wisdom. Auron’s tragic tale (and Jecht’s/Tidus’ to an extent) is meant to show how important experience is and developing from those experiences versus the following the status quo (which Auron was guilty of). While Auron could have had underlying motives beyond his promises, I think they’re a lot more noble and well-meaning in nature. You could almost go as far as saying that Auron not only corrected his own wrongs, but he also influenced the final corrective action to break the cycle.
      Edit/add: I am in no way disparaging the content of the video. It’s a good analysis on Auron.

      @@SLRsquared Auron was also shown as a pretty reckless or stubborn yet ambitious young man back then in the flashbacks. What I love is that as time went on he realised he/they (his old group) were too early too quick to make an impact. It's one of Auron's main character themes to show this and his growth (even if it was maybe mainly motivated by revenge, but his revenge is only second imho as his ambitions seem to take the overall bigger picture into account) and he also made sure to not force anything and that Tidus, Yuna and the others did their own thing and reached their own conclusions. This is also why he witheld information, it wasn't just about revenge but to also find a new lease on life. Change in a world that is stagnant and chained. Besides whole Spira was pretty much under the dogma of Yevon, an unbreakable faith & religion that barely anyone questioned. Not even our own party, with Wakka being the clearest showcase of this - until the breaking point(s). This is how I read Aurons character. His remarks about fate, seizing control of ones own destiny/story, the never ending cycle of dead are quite telling as well. So while Auron was perhaps driven by revenge, there is much more underneath it all.

      @@Lyu-Phy right. I think we’re saying the same thing. I think the only time he wanted revenge was when he went back to Yunalesca alone and got killed. That’s why I said he wasn’t motivated by revenge when the story takes place (Tidus/Yuna team, not during Braska/Jecht team). IIRC I don’t think it was even his idea for Tidus to fight Yunalesca, they all decided it was the right thing for them to do without his input. That’s also what I meant by referring to it as Auron’s tragic tale because I’m referring to the young Auron that got killed for being reckless. His story ended there. He stayed as an unsent but he literally didn’t do anything to change the natural course of the pilgrimage other than to make sure they stayed on their path and support them.
      The only other reason for him not being transparent other than anything we’ve said is… because it’s a game and it needs its own reasons to push the story along. Can you imagine the game ending right at Luca when he joins if he spilled the beans about everything? lol Yuna would have forced him to be sent back to the Farplane at that point lol.

      I don't think of Auron this way, and I don't think that's the way he's intended.
      I think Auron is a man of rigid principle and loyalty/ duty are very high on his priority list. I'd argue that his depiction (that closely resembling a ronin) reinforces this.
      Auron's arc, looks something like this in my view (going mostly from memory): Auron was a warrior of Yevon but he upset a high ranking official and so he fell out of political favor. Braska, a political outcast himself, takes on Auron as his "samurai" if you will. Braska also takes on Jecht as a guardian over Auron's objections. The three become very close on their journey.
      As the fate of Braska becomes apparent, Auron asks to be Braska's Final Aeon (likely wishing to die in his master's service). Braska rejects this, with Braska and Jecht asking Auron to safeguard their children.
      After the defeat of Sin, Auron (now fully understanding the reality of the situation) attacks Yunalesca. He does this not as a rebel but from loyalty to Braska in particular (and maybe Jecht to a lesser extent).
      After his defeat he sets FFX in motion. He safeguards Yuna and Tidus (fulfilling his oaths), he helps defeat Yunalesca (avenging Braska) and he "frees" Jecht from his bondage. He then allows himself his rest, his duties fulfilled.

      I agree with this to a point, Khimari is trying to redeem himself in the eyes of his fellows right up until you fight Brian and Yanke on Mt gagazet. But later on as the party grows together he is able to fight as an equal.

    • @Flashbang_TV
      @Flashbang_TV 4 дні тому +1

      @@gerald216 I agree with you. I suppose to go into my thought a little deeper would be that Khimari would see a little of himself in Auron. Both of them feel like they have something to prove and have a strong sense of duty. Auron feelt like he wasn't deserving of the afterlife unless he proves that the traditional way of defeating sin wasn't the only way and was duty bound to both Braska and Jecht, both on proving Yevon wrong, but also on ensure their kids do what needs to be done. Khimari felt like he wouldn't be accepted as a Ronso unless he was able to both stand up to Biran and Yenke, but also unless he honored the wish of a dying man in ensuring Yuna's Safety.
      They are two characters whom I feel actually have a lot more in common than is displayed outwardly by the game, and I feel the history they have mixed with both of their ideals and goals create a few parallels between them.

    Auron is a better Lucifer than Lucifer.
    An angelic soldier priest's fall from grace ending with him turning his blade against god for his principles. Being cast down into hell, and finding sanctuary in Pandaemonium or Elysium(Zanarkand Dream). Fights his war against Heaven by turning fellow angels of the church and humans. But Auron ends up actually CARING about people.
    He never forgets his vengeance, but Auron's truest vengeance is not usurping the authority of god to claim the throne of Heaven, but rather to change the world into the Heavenly abode he thought god was working towards.
    "A world without sin."
    Auron didn't fall for pride. He fell for compassion, righteousness, and duty! Lucifer was just a butt hurt pampered dweeb who couldn't handle being less than anybody else.
    Auron, was a heroic saint who found out his patron god was an evil traitor, and he died protecting the dignity of the dream inherent in his Sainthood.
    "A world where people don't have to live in constant fear of endless destruction in the name of some old fossilized relic's ego and grudge-match against life."

    It's clear from the flashbacks that Auron does not want Yuna to complete her pilgrimage, but she must reach the end, because he has an IN, to revealing the heart of it all to Tidus.
    I think at first Auron just wanted to fulfil his promise to Jecht, but after realising Jecht's remaining connection with Tidus, he thought that might hold a key to breaking the cycle, he may have even just been granting Sin's request to bring Tidus to Spira and nothing more at first, perhaps Jecht is the one who imagined Tidus as the key.
    I imagine Spira would be short on rebels to Yevon, but knowing Jecht and Tidus, he'd surely have an ally against it.
    Side note: Further evidence that Auron was betrayed by Yevon is as he is the "warrior monk, doomed to obscurity by refusing the hand of the priest's daughter."

This is great cause there really are multiple angles to view the story from, and viewing the story from the lens of Auron really does shift the perspective in a compelling way. Yet it doesn't at all detract from the other sides of the narrative. Stuff like that really keeps FF10 as a personal favorite game for me.

    I appreciate the content because FFX is a timeless classic. I do NOT agree that the game is about Auron nor that it was intended to be about Auron. Just as FF7 fans have gone back years or decades later and tried to spin things that Jenova rather than Sephiroth was in control, or that they were equally in control, the developers have since stated very flatly that people holding those beliefs are simply overthinking it and what the game shows and tells you repeatedly- that Sephiroth is in control of Jenova and uses it as a means to an end- is correct. The same concept is applicable here. Auron is a great character who plays a very key role in a superb story, and it’s awesome that he’s been so well received and has aged well as a character over the last two plus decades, but ultimately the game is to be taken at face value and the story is about Tidus and Yuna, and ultimately Spira and its cycle of death, and not centered around Auron.

    OMG, this video tilted me to comment in less than 2 minutes, I'll be writting what I gotta say about what is pointed as it progress instead of making many comment.
    (1) "This is my story". Taking this as Tidus' or Yuna's story is a fail. The game has the moment when it changes into "this is OUR story", it is a case of character developement. It's true that Tidus & Yuna have both their own side of impact, Tidus being the teams morale boost and hero, while Yuna is the face of the team and hero of Spira, but having the opinion towards one character being the one MC of the story is a huge devalue on the story
    (2) "Auron's Story". Auron in the begining of game says to Tidus that this is now Tidus' story. Auron recognizes his story ended the moment he died agaisnt Yunalesca after Braska defeated Sin. This is like saying Obi Wan is the MC of StarWars episode because he is the one who faced off with Vader and the only one the villain has his eyes on
    (3) "Auron is the catalyst of Tidus arriving at Spyra". No. Sin manifested in Dream Zanarkand because Yetch was looking for Tidus. Auron helped him defeat the monsters but at the teleportation it is implied Auron asked Yetch if he was sure about taking Tidus out to Spira
    (4) "Auron misteriously appears on Zanarkand". No, Auron had been living with Tidus for some years. After getting killed Sin/Yetch took Auron to the Dream Zanarkand. Tidus knew Auron the moment they met in game and people at Spira had not seen Auron in a while. The way Auron drinks when seeing Sin/Yetch in the intro is a salute since they have not seen in a while
    (5) "Motif". Auron knows the truth but he knows going around making claims against Yevon is not gonna do anything. The team is also formed with people who believe in Yevon. Auron is there to guide but also prevent the team be blind about what's going on. He only raised arms against Yunalesca after the team decided that sacrificing summoners was wrong. A team formed with Yuna (a summoner raised out of Bevelle influence) & Tidus (someone who is out of Yevon's teachings and is still going after Sin/Yetch) is a bargain in hope of a different solution. Had the team decided to follow the last summon Auron would have let them do so and leave.
    Not angry with you Jack, but people need to stop trying to make their favorite secondary character the MC via viewpoints. It's like finding treads of people saying tifa is FF7 MC because she's hot

    Auron was literaly executing a plan that he and Jecht developed together. Everything he did was according to Jecht's desire to defeat Sin. His personal desire for revenge doesn’t hinder anything in anyway and is completely understandable. This video is a bold assertion, but ultimately wrong. Gotta pay more attention to the details.

    This is why I think FFx is one of the best story driven games ever, it's all tides, its all, bout Yuna, it's all about Wakka growing, it's all.about Auron. It's so good.

  • @Devonfayr
    @Devonfayr 5 днів тому +2

    No, FFX is not all about Auron. He's an excellently-written character with a satisfying backstory and a good character arc that ties brilliantly into the main plot, while there are other characters whose present arcs and spiritual journeys are more central to the game's present-day narrative. And that's okay. He doesn't need to be more than that.
    This video could have been an email. "Holy shit, Auron's story is really well-written actually."
    Yeah. We know. That doesn't make the story "all about him". A character can have a well-written backstory and a satisfying arc without the story being "all about them".

    • @fangiscool1
      @fangiscool1 2 дні тому

      While I agree with the idea, it sounds like you missed the point. Auron having an interesting background is not the point. The purpose is to point out that Auron actually catalyzes and even causes much of the events that occur.

    • @Devonfayr
      @Devonfayr 2 дні тому +1

      @fangiscool1 Yes... And "causing many of the things that occur" is something that well-written characters often do. That does not, in ANY way, make the story "all about" those characters.
      Is FFX "all about Yuna"? Sure - if you discount Tidus, Jecht, Auron, Braska, Sin, Yevon, and the Fayth. But then, discounting those characters - and their tremendous impact on the plot and world - would be foolish.
      This is why it is NOT all about Yuna, or all about Auron, or all about Tidus, or all about any one character. It's about a whole group of characters who ALL play vital roles in a story that would change significantly if any of those characters were removed or altered.
      As I said in my original comment, this video feels less like the sentiment "it's all about Auron" and more like the sentiment "wow, Auron's writing is really good, actually". It feels like the video's writer is just trying to reflect that they personally never noticed how significant Auron is to the plot of the game. And he IS important! Very much so! But so are Yuna, Tidus, Braska, Jecht, Yevon, the Fayth...
      Edited to correct spelling.

    • @Devonfayr
      @Devonfayr 2 дні тому +1

      In case it's not clear, let me formally state that I have no objections to any of the actual content in the video. I'm a sucker for story analysis and character deep dives, and Auron makes for a great subject.
      I'm objecting solely to the title. Saying that a story is "all about" one character seems, to me personally, to imply that the other characters had significantly less impact on (or relevance to) the story's plot and theming. And in the case of FFX, this is self-evidently untrue.
      The video could have been titled something like "Auron is even more important than I realized", or something similar, and I'd have no complaints.
      Edited to correct a word because typing on a phone is perilous

    Absolutely yes! This is my second favorite game of all time behind Chrono Trigger and this game is definitely about Auron discovering the failings of the world he lives in and using his best friends children as a way of making things right. Without Auron nothing changes. The spiral of death continues.

    Hmm It could be a revenge story, he didn't like the fact that Jecht had to be killed and turned into the final aeon and end up suffering the loss of two of his friends. Got killed by Yunalesca when he challenged her about it and came back as an unsent. Had the devs had more time they could have done the game so it was more fleshed out to make this type of story which would have been really good for the franchise as they don't usually go down this root from the start.

    it's about the whole team and how they have grown, auron having been through it once knows he has to be stronger to defy the gods and the team has to have the same sentiment and growth before even agreeing to do the final summoning which they defy and kill yunalesca.
    the way auron phrases now is the time to decide your fate of whatever he says there is not revenge or making the story about him, but saying his time has passed and it's up to the new generation

    One of my favourite FF characters. Something that’s so great about the classic FF games is how the story revelations recontextualise the characters in this way.
    I don’t think revenge “tragedy” is the right term though. Thinking of the story from Auron’s perspective definitely makes him into a more ambiguous character, acting in pursuit of revenge and being somewhat manipulative towards Tidus and Yuna, as you say. So we can’t view him as a paragon of virtue. But I think the game presents him as on the right side in broad philosophical terms. The game says he is right to turn against Yevon and try to break the cycle.
    And then he finally goes to the Far Plane, satisfied, vindicated and telling the young people “this is your world now” - compare with the maesters of Yevon who refuse to die simply so they can continue to cling to power. This is a happy ending for Auron, not a tragedy.

    Spoiler warning: Tidus is clearly the main character, Tidus is the reason why the cycle of sin breaks... frankly any summoner would have been alright, but Tidus is necessary. I dont necessarily agree with you, BUT auorn did find a way to almost die and then reach in to the faith of zanarkend and pull out Tidus.
    I still think khimari was focused on regaining his honor, and everyone else was focusing on the few years of peace after the final summoning.
    Obviously everyone had their own goal, but at the end of the day all the guardians wanted sin gone.
    Wakka wanted no one else to die, Lulu wanted no one else to to die,
    Riku wanted to fight against racism,
    And Aurun wanted to destroy the religious organization that took his friends.
    And then there is Khimari. He wanted to show that your dreams could be reality.

      @GreatestGames777 6 днів тому

      @michaelv9833 No it's Auron.
      Even chat GPT agrees with me LMFAO.
      In Final Fantasy X, character usage varies based on player strategy, but generally:
      Most Used Character: Auron
      Auron is one of the most commonly used characters due to his high Strength, ability to pierce armored enemies, and early access to powerful Overdrives. His high HP and defense also make him a tank, ensuring he remains relevant throughout the game. Many players rely on him heavily in battles, especially against tough foes with high defense.
      Other Commonly Used Characters:
      Tidus - His agility, high turn count, and key abilities like Haste make him essential.
      Yuna - As the main healer and summoner, she's crucial for healing and summoning powerful Aeons.
      Most Underused Character: Kimahri
      Kimahri is often considered the most underused character because:
      His starting stats are mediocre compared to others.
      His Sphere Grid placement is flexible but unfocused, making it easy for him to fall behind.
      Other characters generally excel in roles he could fill (e.g., Auron for strength, Rikku for versatility).
      That said, a dedicated player can make Kimahri powerful by guiding him through a strong Sphere Grid path early on. However, many casual players leave him underdeveloped compared to the rest of the party.

      I thought this for two decades and used to get super annoyed by it too. I thought it was based on the word TIDE and followed the CLOUD and SQUALL main character naming convention. However, I learned recently that I was incorrect. It IS in fact TEE DUS not TIDE US. The name is derived from the Okinawan word for SUN, whereas Yuna’s name is from the Okinawan word for MOON.
