    A hint for the kumquats. They are incredibly sour as you will realise.
    A recipe my father used for his Kumquats was to buy a bottle of brandy... Any quality will do. Take a large preserving jar... Heat the jar in the oven at 90 Celsius for 20 mins.. To sterilize.
    Wash kumquarts, unpeeled, thoroughly and dry on paper towel. Pack the fruit into the jar when cool enough to do so. Take castor sugar and drizzle in around the fruit, filling all the gaps to half way up the jar. Use a butter knife to pull away fruit to allow the sugar to access gaps. Fill the entire jar to the top with Brandy. Seal and place in a cool dark spot...for 12 months. When opened you will be able to enjoy Kumquat liqueur and when peeled, brandied kumquat segments on icecream. Good as Christmas gifts too for special friends.

    Omg… 1 min in and I subscribed. I am a city girl who owns a Pyrenees and since the “pandemic “ I started becoming a prepper. I was watching a family who started a farm and they got their first Pyrenees and the guy didn’t do enough research and didn’t listen to viewers comments. I’m worried if he still has the dog… if he would just listen to people who own the breed. He tried to treat the Pyrenees like a Rottweiler. It was stressful to see. Your videos are uplifting. Thank you. This is what I was looking for.

      we just rescued a great Pyrenees. he was severely abused, fifty pounds underweight, dehydrated, 50 or more ticks and covered in fleas. we have a 3-year old spoiled rotten Labrador. if you would make a sudden move he would do the army crawl and shake. He's starting to fill out and is beginning to trust us. we adore him but we know nothing about this breed. I don't think he would ever hurt our Labrador.

      @@debbieroller7646 they are livestock guardians. Very gentle with goats, chickens, cows, pigs. He should be fine with other dog. They defend the herd and property by barking & sounding the alarm. They dont normally fight, their size and noise scares predators away. Many homestead channels have them. Watch a few. They are working dogs that live outdoors in the cold/heat with the other animals.

    Love your video. We love May! We have two female Great Pyrenees 3 years old and 2.5 ears old. We’re looking to see how to introduce and integrate a new baby male Great Pyrenees with our two, hoping to breed our oldest - the sweetest temperament. She is amazing with our ducks and chickens. Our younger Great Pyrenees Snowy is still learning to be “chill” around the chickens and ducks. We hope neither will feel left out when we adopt a male puppy. Beauty our oldest, had a really difficult time not being the center of my world when we adopted Snowy. Snowy ended up being 7 weeks old when we adopted her…she fit in the palm of my hand….we think she was younger than the stated 7 weeks. Beaut is definitely the alpha female. ❤ The Great Pyrenees are a huge part of our family and make wonderful loving family members, caring deeply about everyone and all things on our small farm.❤ thank you for your sweet and informative UA-cam Channel! 💕🐾💕

    I have loved watching your LGD and chicken videos! I'm curious, how do you get your hens to lay in the coop when they free range?

    • @WillowRidgeAcres
      @WillowRidgeAcres  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you for the love and support Brittany! There are a few things you can do to train/encourage your hens to lay in the nesting boxes in the coop when free ranging. 1) Keep the hens closed in the coop & run for a week to limit their option to just the nesting boxes. After a week they will have made a habit of using the nesting boxes. 2) Get some ceramic training eggs from your local feed store and place one in each nesting box. Chickens will instinctively choose to lay where another egg has already been laid. They trust that if another hen trusts that spot as “safe” it must be safe. You can trick this instinct behavior with the fake ceramic eggs. 3) It also helps if you have mature hens that already lay in the boxes. They will teach the younger chicks by example.
      Hope that makes sense and helps! That’s a great question. We might do a video on that subject soon!

    Hi first time watcher..Was wondering why the dogs don’t get the shells also? I heard lots of calcium ??
    Also I have 5 free range girls in my backyard. They have torn it up as well as pot holes everywhere.. My 6 month Great Pyrenees gets so muddy n dirty after he plays in his pool (we live in Florida) or after a rain.. Then tracks it in the house (so dirty) he lives in the house. Do you have any suggestions? I thought I had a brilliant idea and laid hay through out the yard but after rain it mildewed and when the dog rolls in it He smells so bad .. So my floors are always dusty n dirty but also stinks ..HELP
    I love my Great Pyrenees, he is very spoiled but is listening really well ty!!!

    • @WillowRidgeAcres
      @WillowRidgeAcres  2 роки тому

      Thank you for watching Lynda! We do give them the whole egg with shell sometimes. We just don’t give them the shell every time.
      As for helping with your muddy situation 😬 I don’t know what to suggest as our Great Pyrenees are all outside 100% of the time. They also love to get in their water troughs and get dirty/muddy when they get hot or when it rains. We have two smaller inside dogs that get muddy paws from our property when we let them out to go potty, but we just keep a towel and a bowl of water next to the door to clean their paws before we let them inside. It’s a bit of a chore after it rains, but it’s the only way to keep the house somewhat clean! Good luck!

      Chickens stop laying eggs after 2 years old. By then, shes just eating feed, when replacements are available all the time. It takes chickens 6 months old to start laying eggs... so that's already a 6 month feed investment. No farmer would keep an old hen as a pet. It's not cost effective, their not pets.
      Unless their is trauma, and you're attached to her...
      I had 1 egg out of 8 hatch. They need 3 or minimum of 2. I carried her around on my shoulder like a parrot. I called her Pirate, my pirate chickie.. she was soo sweet, I was at work... neighbor dogs got In chicken coops and i lost her.
      She was semi pet. Lived in the cooper, but runs over & travels on my shoulder

    Very cute puppy ! but why your great pyrenees are so skinny ?

    • @WillowRidgeAcres
      @WillowRidgeAcres  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for watching! Our Great Pyrenees are the appropriate weight for the breed standard, they just don't have as thick of a coat as you are probably used to seeing in pictures online since we are in south Texas. They shed a lot of their undercoat in the summer to deal with the heat so their coats don't stay huge and fluffy all year.

    Are your guard dogs snake trained? One friend has lost 5 blue American Staffies because of poisonous snake incursions onto their farm. Would snakes 🐍 be another problem for you?

    • @WillowRidgeAcres
      @WillowRidgeAcres  2 роки тому

      Good question Andrew. We honestly don’t have many snakes here. We get garter snakes at times but they are harmless and seem to stay out of the area with the dogs. We only see those snakes behind our house where we don’t have the dogs

      If you mean... do we eat any of them? No, we don't eat any of them. So yes, I guess that would make them all pets. 😁

    My Maria has Egyptian eyes. It looks like masquera but it is real. Her mum is a Pyranesees, and her papa is a Boxer. She has the mind of a mountain dog and the fur and disposition of a Boxer. She is playful and super friendly. She sees, hears, and smells beyond me. She warns us of potential danger beyond my scope of senses, and she is never wrong. She is the love of my life. She's my girl. I would not hesitate to take a bullet for her, and I know that she would do the same for me. We are a team. We are in this together. She's 4, and I bought her when whe was 8 weeks old. I work online, so we stay together all the time. When she passes, I plan to get another dog and give her the same name, and we can live our lives together, again. Dogs can reincarnate back into our lives. My last dog was a Saint Bernard/English Mastiff named Charlie Marie.

    Feel so sad for this little girl. A life of having countless litters of puppies that she'll have taken away from her. Doesn't sound like a life I would want for my furry baby.

      Thank you for watching Cheryl. And we appreciate your concern. Trust that we make sure our Great Pyrenees dogs are very loved. They are a big part of our family. And we certainly do not subject our females to having “countless” litters of puppies. We do not breed our females on back to back heat cycles. We give our females a break of 12-18 months between litters and will not breed them more than 3-4 times over their life span.
