    Tom does his math real quick here and decides to take a calculated risk. The moment he realises Mattson’s lost Shiv’s vote you can literally see the wheels turning in his brain. In the end he tells Shiv it’s him hoping, but also kind of knowing, that if it came down to choosing between him and Ken, Shiv would probably still side by him.

    • @gibbygoldfisch7012
      @gibbygoldfisch7012 Рік тому +186

      Actually, I think what sets Tom apart from the Roys is that here there is no calculated risk, no big emotional gambit -- he tells Shiv that it's him because he thinks it's the right thing to do. You can see him wrestling with the guilt of keeping the truth from her again and finally coming clean because I think he understands that if he hides this from her and it's revealed by someone else, she will never trust him ever again; and it's simply not in his nature to be deceitful to her.

      Look at the way Shiv and Tom being interviewed by Mattson and also the way they pitched themselves.
      Shiv went with "Pick me, Pick me" energy but she's never telling Mattson specifically what she's doing on the company. All she did was telling him "You have to pick me just because I'm good." Even though Mattson knew she has no experience on the company. Also, she's pregnant, imagine having a pregnant CEO when she has to go on Maternity Leave for 2-3 months to take care of her baby, who's gonna be in charge on the company? She's never thinking of that as she's never looking herself on the future.
      Meanwhile, when Tom got interviewed, Tom told what he did on the company, he also said that he never slept well from past few days since Tailgate Party. He even missed Logan's funeral and stay at work. He is telling Mattson with a humility and he's willingly to be a pain sponge as he mostly being hurt by Shiv and her brothers many times. He's also talking to Mattson like adult while Shiv's talking to Mattson like a little girl who's begging for a toy. Mattson realized he's the one.

    I've seen a lot of people saying that Shiv flipped at the last minute just to spite Ken, but I think this scene and her earlier conversation with Tom on the phone informs her decision far more than anything else in the episode. Shiv is terrified of being left alone, her father is gone, her mother is emotionally unavailable, Mattson has betrayed her, her brothers have already tried to cut her out of the business once this season (and Kendall's behavior certainly pointed towards icing her out again), and if she voted the deal down, she loses Tom forever too. Shiv is terrified of the prospect of having to open herself up to another person (again) and having it go wrong - so she picks the 'devil she knows' in Tom.

    This scene may be one of the very best of the series.
    Shiv thinking she is feeding Tom info that he actually already knows, but also in return, reveals that his #1 in Greg shared this very info, unknowingly that Tom was in fact the one replacing her..
    It goes from Shiv thinking she is controlling the conversation and Tom feeling a sense of despair to Wambsgams pulling a Logan and playing the ace card he had up his sleeve by telling the truth to Shiv and watching her crumble.
    When Tom says “Come on…I know you. Like you wouldn’t if it was the other way around?” Boom.
    Shiv realized she lost…and her anger in this moment is her last grasp at power before she realizes what her final choice must be in the end.
    Her reaction, the music, the walk, the camera, the delivery of:
    “It’s Tom..”
    Absolutely f#%&ing brilliant.

      I dont think Tom telling Shiv that he's the one is this brilliant Loganesque move. Shiv had the votes to give it to Ken and obviously was pissed off at the reveal and became even more determined. Tom's confession was a desperate attempt to leverage the fact that Matsson's choice isn't some rando, but someone she knows and can benefit from, but then again she couldve also benefitted from Ken being CEO. I think it's pretty clear that most of Shiv's decision-making had to do with either Ken's arrogance or her wanting to burn it all down because she lost the job.

    • @cadenford1425
      @cadenford1425 Рік тому +8

      @@Iloovecereal Logan always made moves that helped him win. Tom learned from the best and knew that if he was just honest with Shiv (who like you said would want to burn it all down since she lost the job) would lean his way despite her anger. However, one could say that in the end Shiv did this just to keep her hand at the table in the long run and sealing out Ken and Rome for good.

    • @Iloovecereal
      @Iloovecereal Рік тому +3

      @@cadenford1425 hmmm, i guess im having a hard time believing that Tom and Logan have that much in common. 😄I can't really think of many instances where Logan implemented honesty as a main tactic. Also, Tom got the job because he is subservient and has a good work ethic (which is probably one of the only things they have in common) Yes, Shiv did extend the olive branch to Tom at the beginning of the episode, which he may have used, but I don't think it was a given that Shiv would look past her anger and vote in Tom's favour. Yes, with Tom she still has a hand at the table, but getting an actual position at the company is more likely with Ken cuz he doesn't have to get approval from Matsson.

    • @cadenford1425
      @cadenford1425 Рік тому +3

      @@Iloovecereal yeah, I meant more of the idea that Tom “pulled a Logan” and made a successful move. Not so much that they have a lot in common. Tom played the long game in a sense and his play was honesty, while Logan was always more cunning and harsh. Both played to their strengths and did it well which helped them ultimately each have power when they wanted it most.
      Every kid tried to make their move to do this and couldn’t reach the finish line, so it goes to show how in a way the two are similar, yet so different. I do think that in the end, nobody out of the Roy family is really a winner from their own perspective (except Rome in a way, but ehh lol) regardless of how you look at it - which just shows how well done the writing really is.
      And yes, while I do think that Shiv would’ve have had an actual position with Ken in charge, she would’ve hated that and found a way to do what she does best and implode it for her own well-being 😂

      He wasn't gloating. He was going for a hail mary because of the leak. It was mentioned multiple times in multiple scenes before this that the siblings, in the end, would have an advantage because they are together. Tom knew that in order to get the vote, it was through divide and conquer. Shiv, from the beginning, was always excluded and pushed to the side by her two brothers. Tom figured she would never vote for either of her brothers because of this. Not to mention, she was carrying his child and she hinted that she still wanted to give their marriage a try. Tom saw this as an opportunity to mindfuck (a tactic mentioned a lot of times throughout the show) Shiv before a huge vote to create disruption and doubt. Masterful hand played by Tom here. He wasn't being careless. He knew what he was doing. That's why Shiv ended up in Tom's car in the end. She knew he beat her in a game she never thought he would be a serious contender in.

    The number one boy almost made it. Almost. Did shiv save him or kill him? We wouldn’t ever know. All we know is- he made his whole life about the top job. It was promised to him when he was 7. Except the company he has nothing. No kids, no wife, no dad, no friends, no partner, - just Colin.
    A perfect completion of the tragic arc of Kendall Roy. Jeremy Strong, you are such a fucking legend for playing him this well. A Lady Macbeth kinda person, with a serious but childish demeanour, comical and tragic at the same time.

    As I look back at this show, it’s really funny to me how these people have BILLIONS of dollars and they all choose to fight to have the worst job when they could all do literally anything else and succeed. I get that that’s the point, but if any of us non-billionaires were in their shoes, I think we’d all have cashed out and be sitting on a private island.

    Shiv fans can't possibly support her final decision after seeing this. Shiv is clearly upset here that Tom was picked over her, him telling her that Matsson picked him if anything made the situation worse. She only nuked the vote out of pure spite for Kendall. Pretending Shiv made some 4D chess move at the vote ruins a good ending, the sibs could never get out of each others way. Shiv and Roman have a deep sense of hatred for Kendall, it explains why they would bring up his lowest point with the waiter and insult his kids at the end.

    • @SonOfGod3000
      @SonOfGod3000 Рік тому +11

      Thank God somebody said this. They had the numbers. Roman tried to stand up and be THE GUY but he was reduced to a squealing little pig in front of all the power. Shiv got played royally by Matson, it was Ken that engineered the reverse Viking strategy. Roman earlier was crying and asking Ken why Isn’t it Me? Like why don’t I have in me, what you have in you? And through his tears he tells Ken he hates him. And they bring up his kids, and his earlier mistake, like why? It was absolutely since we can’t have it, you won’t either, so they burned down the castle out of jealousy and spite. Simple as that. It was not some elaborate scheme by Shiv her little fat faced jealousy was angry it wasn’t her. She said earlier to Ken at her mothers house why can’t you accept you’ve lost, and take it like a man? Remember that? Yet when she lost, she couldn’t take it like a woman. She spazzes out and screws everyone. Screw Shiv.

    Am I really the only one saying this? Matsson is the one that won alright? Despite attempts made by Kendall costed him more for the acquisition, he did manage to pull it off and takeover Waystar. That’s it for the Roy’s Dynasty man. The siblings are still rich asf but they’re completely outta the game for good and Tom is only CEO because he’s a malleable and manipulatable puppet for Lukas, which means Lukas is actually going to be the mastermind in control of everything. The invading Vikings have prevailed, Succession ends with the only potential succession ruined and the empire subjugated by quite literally a foreigner.
