    These 51s have quickly become my favorite writers. Which surprises me because all of mine are EF nibs and I typically prefer M or larger (more ink! more!) but they just write so smooth with a good ink. Also, has anyone actually seen James' wife? Are we sure she isn't just a blue pen? :D

      She's not, but my wife does share my love for blue pens. lol

    I have the blue green acrylic with an open nib. Almost giveaway price on EB. No gift box (just bubble wrapped in a padded bag) and nearly a month wait. A lovely pen aesthetically and a good writer. Thanks, James, for the reviews of this multi-range model.

      I've been using the blue/green pen in this review a lot the last week. I keep it in pretty regular rotation. Glad you liked it!

    Another excellent review. Jinhao's hooded nibs are all EF. I have the blue/green acrylic hooded version and it's a gem--one of my favorites in appearance and writing quality.

    I finally got round to inking up one of my translucent 51A hooded pens half an hour ago. I hadn't really noticed but the barrel feels smooth as silk and of a higher quality than the Bic style cheap brittle plastic of (say) the Jinhao 991. Even these entry level single colour translucent 51As are competent and reliable dreams. You just can't go wrong.

    I have the black, blue and red opaque models and the Acrylic Sunset version. They are nice affordable writers.

      I have all the chatoyant colors, plus a wood one, and now consider ordering a straight or transparent blue, to serve as a designated writer for Noodler's Bay State Blue.

      Thanks, I haven't yet, but I have Bobby nib pen on my list. I'm looking forward to seeing how it writes. I picked up a couple of the acrylics for my daughters, and they look great.

    I agree, the Jinhao 51a is a really nice fountain pen. I have three of them. All with the hooded nibs. They would make a lovely Christmas stocking filler. It would even be a good way to introduce a newcomer to the world of fountain pens. I have found them to be very reliable and therefore had no worries when I gave a couple away as gifts. Thank you for the video.

    There’s actually a set of 5 on amazon with all the clear colors for like $14 so I might pick that up and either use all the different colors with their respective inks or give them to friends and family to experience the joy of fountain pens haha, haven’t decided yet

    Love your videos. Well, no one has gifted me this pen for Christmas but i think i will have to gift a few to myself. And i liked the green one a lot. I am not a huge fan of the hooded style nibs so i am going to go for the regular nib style.

    I prefer the non hooded nibbed Jinhao 51a pens. I have a grey with a fine nib and a red with a medium nib.
    The medium nib is my favourite

    Now I got ideas!! Replace the original number 5 nib by a Goulet nib!! They are made by Jowo and are absolutely amazing! Available in 6 flavors, from extra fine to 1.4 mm stub (but only in silver, and no flex).
    I did equip a Moonman M800 with a Goulet nib number 6 and it became a super-pen!

    • @JG3Reviews

      That M800 is a nice pen. I have the blue and the green (blue has a Bock).

    Verification: The 51A with the non hooded nib do use a N°5 nib.
    Question on your wood pen: Which wood is it? That looks great.
    Question on hooded vs non hooded nibs: Are the sections interchangeable? Will the hooded nib section fit the wood barrel?
    Question on the hooded nib pens:
    Does the hood unscrew so you can remove the feed and nib (also housing?) for cleaning?
    Do you know if the hooded nib pens will take a Zebra "G" nib without a lot of fitting to the feed and housing?

      I've got 5, one wouldn't write at all until I did the ammonia flush, now all are great. I've the wood pen loaded with a brown ink, writes very well. The non-hooded nibs are the same as the 992, and are quite good.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 роки тому +2

      Can be a few things, some pretty easy fixes. The first thing I do is a good cleaning with a bulb syringe (like those used to clean out an ear) and clean water. If I think there may be an ink clot, I'll use a mix of 10 parts water, 1 part ammonia, and two drops of dishwashing liquid, then a flush of water. This fixes most of the skipping problems I have. Let the pen dry overnight or longer before inking back up.
      Sometimes a nib might be to close to the feed, or the tines too tight, and (very) gently drawing a few lines with extra pressure will be just enough to create better flow. Just be careful that you don't splay the tines and create a second issue. It doesn't take much extra pressure.
      Hopefully one of these will help!

    • @idipbananasintocoffee
      @idipbananasintocoffee 4 роки тому

      @@JG3Reviews Thanks! I think I'll have to try with ammonia solution; so far nothing worked. The tines were even splayed. It's just such a frustrating experience - and I got the pen as a gift :( I hope I manage to disassemble it somehow...
