  • The wooden barrel caught me eye, but there is more than meets the eye to this solidly made Jinhao.

    Love an honest review. I think this pen is worth the cost.

    You were not kidding. Two years later - I was looking for a nice fude/bent nib. being new to the eastern market for pens - I went looking for reviews. Found yours, and this decided for me. This is an incredible pen for the cost!? Thank you for your reviews - I have watched many at this point. Thanks again. *The only diff seems that the nib is closer to a #4 on the fude. Great all the same - as I doubt I will change the nib(the pen and nib are both exactly what I needed and hoped for).

    I just bought this one in the same colour (the wood got me), only £6.00 in the UK as of June 2023, and I really like it, (even the clip). This one is rosewood but they also do it in walnut which is less reddish.

    I’m glad you pointed out the poor transition between the Pelikan pen body and piston knob. That has always bugged me too and I always wondered why I hadn’t heard any reviewers mention it before. Adventure Denali spoke in praise of it in one video saying that the step down on the Pelikan piston knob prevents the posted cap from turning the piston knob. So in that aspect the Jinhao could take a lesson from the Pelikan, but I agree that the attention to aesthetics in this area on the Jinhao seems better to me. I also love the look of wood. Thanks for the review! I always enjoy your reviews because I like the things you say.

    Very nice review. I have the same pen, but the nib was a bit scratchy compared to my other Jinhao #5 nibs, so I swapped it with a Moonman #5 EF. I suspect the HongDian nibs should fit too. The only thing I also don't like is the clip, and I would have liked a twist cap version as well.

    Thank you so much for your review! I am hoping that I can really reduce the black ink stain on my finger from trying to impatiently start the pen writing again after a few years being uninked. I'm hoping to buy and try a Platinum Preppy as then I'd be Finally able to see what on earth is happening inside the whole fountain pen itself. That and I like to see what ink I'm using - otherwise it's completely left my mind already... Unless a Lammy black is the only ink I own because I had no idea writing with colors is so much fun. 😄

    My Hongdian 1831 has the same end finial as this Jinhao 8802, thank you for this video, recently I seems to have overspent on buying inexpensive pens so for now I am abstaining from buying, your video satisfy my thirst to get more pens! haha.

    Own three Jinhao 8802 (wood, cherry blossom & sea shell). Overall satisfied with these
    pens, and particularly like the looks of the sea shell & cherry blossom pens. I also have
    not experienced skipping in neither of these pens.

      I had forgotten about the sea shell version. I may have to take a look at that sometime, looks like something I may like for someone on my Christmas list.

    Im happy I discovered your channel sir, thank you for the video and education!! I want fountain pen that Looks Close to or as nice that 8802 but with a nice medium juicy nip with Gooding flow I do not like dry fine lines. Can you make any recommendations on the cheap? I like that $5-$20 price range

    I got one based on this recommendation. The one I got has a cap that doesn't fit too snuggly. Its also a heavy pen to me but a nice writer nonetheless.

    The design doesn't speak to me but I like the wood and now I'm considering buying that exact finish but in the 51a model, another great video and review but the audio was a bit quiet, even at full volume. Do you know why?

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 роки тому

      I have the 51 in wood, and it’s a favorite of mine. I don’t know what happened with the volume in the last segment. It was ok in editing, but it’s a lot quieter now.

    I have just recently started watching your reviews. Do you have any videos on nib swapping?
    I don’t know if you have any reviews on the Duke fountain pens. I have a few fountain pens in my collection, one of which is a Mont Blanc, and I have to be honest and tell you that the Duke is actually my favorite even above my Mont Blanc.

    I have the sea shell version and like it a lot, and am thinking about ordering the wood one as well. I’m also happy with the stock nib, but I’ve heard people say that the nib can’t be changed on this, so I’m curious about how it’s done.

    • @JG3Reviews

      I've seen where it can take a bit of effort. I'm betting they glued it (they do that with a few models). I saw on reddit a discussion of this, and they were successful using a piece of a bike innertube for grip. The main issue would be using enough strength without damaging the pen, especially the feed. I had a replace a feed on another Jinhao because of this. Oops!

    James, I enjoyed your review. The 8802 also comes with many pretty barrel centres, and brushed as well as chrome trims. _See the list._ The brushed metal trim pens are model 8802A, the rest are 8802 and have chrome trim. Bing Images showed a Vivid Pearl 8802 with gold trim! Prices vary but the wood types seem among the less expensive.
    WOOD BARRELS:
    ----------------------------
    Rosewood - natural rosewood
    Walnut - natural walnut wood
    Pine - natural pine wood
    Rosewood - Brushed metal, natural rosewood
    Walnut - Brushed metal, natural walnut
    ACRYLIC BARRELS:
    --------------------------------
    Shell aka Deep Sea or Bright Pearl
    Red Plain
    Black Marble
    Yellow Marble
    Red Marble
    Orange Marble
    Cream Marble (actually, nearer to white than cream)
    Orange and Cream Marble
    Coffee Marble

      @@JG3Reviews My pleasure. Jinhao pens are made by Shanghai Qiangu Stationery Co. Ltd. by the way, and if you haven't seen their web site, click here: qiangu.bjsx12.host.35.com/en/indexen.asp to look around (click on the 'Fountain Pens', left column, then go to the first one and just keep hittng the right-pointing chevron to see lots of pens). The site is not quite complete, but interesting anyway.

    A very, very nice pen with two turns-off for me: number 5 nib and push cap. I am sure you know 2-model pen Jinhao 9035, which you can get for less than 6 euros in the usual Chinese "channels". They are brown and red, all-wood (cap and body), #6 nib and turning cap. I paid 5.40 euros per pen shipped. A steal.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 роки тому +1

      I’ve thought that this pen tweaked for a #6 would really have been cool.

    I have one of these but mine is a bit too dry for me. I also have 2 jinhao 500's and one is perfect and the other skips. I think they are a bit randon. They can vary a lot. But at the price if you get a dud just order another.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 роки тому

      True, I think proportion makes it seem a bit overkill here. But I'll admit I'm nitpicking that a bit.

  • @bikkies
    @bikkies 4 роки тому +1

    I have one of these. Aesthetically it's very nice, solid and balanced in the hand. The nib is of course generic as Jinhao use the same stock nib in most pens but, as you say, it can be swapped out. I would be thinking a 1.1 stub or similar. As for the shield on the clip, it's comparable with the Jinhao 159.

    I have a Jinhao x750, and it has flow insues that happen way too often to be confortable (I use Pelikan 4001); I am told that Jinhao 51a and Jinhao 100 are much improved in regards to flow. But this one, is made of wood (which I like), and cheapter than the Jinhao 100, would you recommend it for dry inks?

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 роки тому +1

      I can't speak for the 100, but I've used 4001 inks in 51a pens without issue, and this one should function well, too.

    How is the security on the cap when capping and uncapping? I have a x450 that I really like, but the cap no longer snaps closed tightly. I can shake it of the pen easily.

    ANOTHER Jinhao I need to get! I've been pleased with any of the Jinhao pens that I have gotten, both with the number 5 and number 6 nibs. I've even given away a Jinhao x250 to my older sister (who grew up in the tail end of the first fountain pen era) because it was good enough to be a nice gift (my other sister I gave a Wing Sung 6100--another really nice pen.)
    As far as the nib swap thing? As you saw in the Hero calligraphy set, the Chinese italic stub nibs are pretty good, as well. I have several in both 599s and 992s. If you DO want to try a stub in the 8802, Bobby sells them, as well as other vendors.
    Thanks for the great review! (Nice to see the Esterbrook as well. 😁)

    Wow. The price has surely gone up. I got these when they came out for $1. They were great them and they are great now. So is the 500. The 992, 599, 692 and everything else they make. Cracks me up when the UA-camr pen infomercial channels bitch about these pens.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 роки тому

      For now I'm happy with the stock nib. But I think if I ever get around to swapping I've really come to like JOWO's 1.1 stub (also Goulet's).

  • @davidmcguigan5497

    Thanks, James! I'm with you on the clip, it could have a much cleaner sharper look. Re. Jinhao nibs, they tend to be good in
    my experience, but I have played with a few to get better performance. Coincidentally, I also get skips with some Jinhaos on
    capital "J"s, too. Jinhao has plenty of pens with #6 nibs and I wonder why they went with a #5 on this pen that seems big
    enough for a 6. But, hey, if it writes well, it's a good nib.

    I bought one of those with a Fude nib. Fude's do not seem to be popular in the US. But, if you like to go from fine to broad, it is quite the nib for that.
    It listed it as Rose Wood. And you know, I didn't believe it. But yes, it is real wood. Wow.
    I ended up ordering another one with a fine nib. Based in part from your review.
