Another type of fire starter that I learned from Wranglerstar is to take an empty paper egg carton and fill each compartment with dryer lint, then pour melted wax over the lint. Then you can tear off each egg compartment to start a fire. Seems to work well.
I take an empty pickle or peanut (plastic ) jar. Fill it with cotton balls layered with Vaseline, put the lid on and set it out in the hot summer sun. As the Vaseline melts down it saturates the cotton.
Dryer lint as an effective fire starter is a myth. It only works if the lint is from 100% cotton. Mix in any wool or man-made fibers and it will smolder. Much better alternatives out there!
I think people may underestimate the quantities of medical supplies you’ll go through even for a minor injury. Minor cuts may eat through a half box of Band-Aid or gauze.
Big time. I have dang near enough to stock a pharmacy, and quite frankly that’s not enough. For A wound to dress it is one thing. To be able to care for a serious wound or burn, could eat most persons supplies within days. I have basic trauma kits in all my bags (4), each vehicle (2), the house, and travel trailer. Then I have some serious SHTF bags in the house, trailer, one that moves from vehicle to vehicle, a spare one of those in case both vehicles end up in use. THEN theres the supplies. I can fully stock everyone of our companies ambulances (9, including two that arent running) in the house, and I could probably fully stock 4 with what in the trailer in two “hidey hole” compartments. This is not counting OTC drugs, and other special equipment. I could run through those supplies in less than a month with a few seriously injured people. AND CHECK YOUR EXPIRATION DATES!!! Most of your drugs are good for, as long as, 20 yrs past their date. Stuff like aspirin becomes toxic shortly after it’s date. With bandages and stuff like that, as long as it’s in its casing, and in tact it’s good. As an extra precaution I pull all first aid supplies from the box (unless the box is it’s only wrapping) and place it in zip locks. 10 double packed 4x4s to a bag, 5 5x9s, etc, etc. Then they’re placed in plastic totes capable of holding at least a quarter of my resupply and stored up high in a cool dry area. I’ve got supplies over 20 yrs old that look like I just bought them as a result. It might sound like over kill but it’s an investment and it’s always there when needed.
You're making me think even when it comes to basic boo boo kits. I think I have a lot but maybe I don't. A lot of basic stuff can be found at dollar stores right now pretty cheap but I figure one day they that box of bandaids or gauze will be hard to come by.
@@visamedic Too true! We have stockpiled small sized disposable diapers for blood loss containment. Use sterile dressing pressed against the wound then reinforce with the clean diapers using firm pressure. The diapers are relatively cheap compared to non-sterile dressings. - Nora Charles, RN
We take so much for granted. I've traveled around the world and will say the happiest ppl are the ones that live with less. The ones in direct contact and control of their resources, that work as families or tribes or communities. We have a lot to learn, or I should say re learn from those ppl.
Just received my bonus for the year at work, bought a Big Berkey with 2 filters for about $350. Using the rest to stock up more food. Got a waterbath canner last year and was given all of my grandparents jars (hundreds). Got a good stock of lids and rings, also got a dehydrator and grinder. I have huge gardening plans this year, last year was my first and I loved being able to produce my own food.
Won't you need electricity to run your dehydrator for example? Or do you have other means for running that? I was thinking about buying that stuff but I'm worried about source of power. I can't afford solar and I don't know how to generate my own power
@@nadiasvlog8290 youtube it? I have accepted i might be without power at the moment. I have a big garden though so i am planning to set up an open fire to cook over. When i can i will probably buy a generator but generators need fuel and not sure how much of a problem that will be either. Most of the problems come in winter here so solar not that much use apart from phone charge and i think my car would be as good. You Could look at some of the van lifers see if anyone has options off the car battery alternator thing. Good Luck.
Two and three months ago, thanks to SensiblePrepper channel, I was able to help some friends in Ukraine to take the right decisions for them at this time to protect their families. All these people (19) I'm talking about are all in a safe place now in foreign countries. God bless you and your followers. Ciao d'Italia
Hi from the UK. Interesting video. I am ex military, we always carried a couple of women's tampons for when we wanted to start a fire. They are cheap, in a waterproof wrapper, and because they are made using cotton wool, you can tease them out into a huge ball which is a good fire starter. So don't take the **ss out of servicemen who carry these things in their emergency pack. :) . . Lots of civilians might benefit on how to make up the contents of a medical bag/store. Keep the videos coming.
I am 26 and I suffer from IBSD. I noticed the price on imodium went from 98 cents to 1.08. It wasn't a huge jump but at the time they had a large supply of them. I bought like 15 of them. It will last me quite a while but it is an item I use almost every day! Stock up on medcine that you need.
I CANT STRESS ENOUGH, just how IMPORTANT it is to ALWAYS make sure to Break-in your boots after you buy them!!! DON’T just get them and throw them on a shelf or in your bag or vehicle…. BREAK THEM IN PROPERLY FIRST!!! You WILL REGRET IT if you don’t and then have to hike miles when SHTF & you are Forced to go anywhere!!!
Great advice especially if your a diabetic. You don't want torn up feet that are difficult to heal in a SHTF or bug out situation. As a matter of fact, ty for alerting me to add foot pads to my medical bag as I'm a diabetic & forgot to add those to my bag.
I underestimated how much feet swell as I drive and walk relentlessly. I underestimated what happens when I wear a double layer of socks in the winter. Bought favorite discontinued boots used and half a size larger.
My neighbors who are Amish plant all their food and have animals. When I asked them about the prices and their making ends meet, they told me that the only thing they buy at the store is boots for themselves and the children. They hadn't heard about the economic conditions like we are facing.
Have chickens and rabbits. They serve food purpose unlimited based off eating off land, and fertilizer. Chicken coup bedding and all built up during winter, rabbit, left overs from veggies and fruit, NO meat, lime, and worms. Dig ft square by 6 deep dump it all in amd mix while pile. Let sit over winter, great for natrual fertilizer.
Nobody ever mentioned these, but I think that keeping some emery board nail files in a kit is a good idea- not only are they very flammable as wood sticks, but each one has two sides with a different grit of sandpaper, which may come in very handy, plus they are flat and weight nothing, they will fit into any size of kit. Thanks for all the great info and advice you guys put out!
I think communications should at least be on the need now list. Even if its a small crank am fm radio. Preferably a HAM, if SHTF you need to know whats going on out there.
The medical system is so broken right now, I would not go into a hospital until a last option. No mater how much you have in medical items, you do not have enough. FOOD: I stay away from items like Mountain House and Patriot Foods because of the high salt content. I only get items that the ingredients are only with the package says is in it. I.E. if it says peas or chicken then the ingredients say only peas or chicken. Nothing else. Home caning is the best way to go. MAPS: I always make sure I have a "DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer" book for any state I travel in. They even show small gravel roads. They do not show detailed maps of inside cities but you can get city maps at visitor centers for each city. Mine for Missouri even shows how Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee all join together.
Local news in the Miami-Dade and Broward county areas have been reporting on supply chain and shortage issues since the first of the year. Some of the items we're used to having in abundant supply have not been available for months such as organic sharp cheddar cheese, certain cracker types. A local grocery store was cutting their beef roast in half to make it look like there was more on the shelf than there actually was. Also in short supply are canning jars and lids, potatoes and others. Ammunition? What ammo? Prices have gone up on everything. Exam gloves we purchased for $19 a box of 100 now go for $50, Wire shelves that were $89 last year are now $119. Industrial shelves $150 last year are now $239.
I'm disabled so I live on a limited budget. I have no choice but to shop @ thrift & second hand stores. I've bought several shelves for my basement to store my preps on for $15-25. Works just as good as the $120 ones do. I don't eat red meat b/c I don't like it. I guess that's a good thing right now. I saw the canning jar shortage coming, so I stocked up be it got really bad, even though I had to buy small mouth size, it's better than having none at all. Btw, I also buy them @ thrift stores when I can find them. Usually .50¢ I might "borrow" an extra pair or two of gloves @ the Dr. For the prices they charge, they can afford it. Shhh, don't tell anyone! 😂
Military surplus boots are the only boots that last years - all the expensive £100-£150 pair sof hiking boots Ive bought last barely a year. Wellingtions barely 3 months.
I don’t know if anyones done this, but I had to go to an urgent care clinic, and they were able to call ahead to the hospital and get me a room before I even got there. Then my husband just drove me there and I checked in.
Hey Don and Robbie, Great show as usual ! Keep these coming. Valuable information as always. Wishing you both and your families the very best. Warmest Regards from Arizona
ALSO: pool shock is a GREAT way to treat water for drinking and potable use. Bleach has a “Half-life” as soon as it’s opened! It will degrade over time, 6 mos to a yr… but Pool shock is shelf stable indefinitely just needs to be stored in an out building because it will “off-gas” but you can take a bucket and mix like a gallon of pool shock then treat your water w how ever many drops per volume you would use bleach!
As for CASH, make sure you have a lot of small bills and coins. If not you will have to use a $10.00 bill for something they want only $5.00 for. CLOTHS: I make sure I always have at least 4 large packs of socks, t-shirts and underwear stored back. BOOTS / SHOES: I have 3 pair of each stored back. Make sure you have extra boot and shoe laces stored. STORAGE units: In SHTF all of them will raided fast. Makes sure if it is stored in one, you can afford to lose it.
I own a Berkey but I can test the water from my reverse osmosis. It's not just faith. I think it's important to be able to tell if something works or not.
With reference to cooking in close urban environments. I don’t know how well you can smell, but I can smell a cigarette burning at over 250 yards. If it’s a grid down situation and you’re in a bad area, or at least temporarily compromised safety wise, have food you do not have to cook. This can be MREs or food bars, granola bars, or jerky, for those who can’t afford MREs, which have quadrupled in price per case in the last two years. Id have at least three days to a week of those. And most canned food if not all of it can be eaten cold. It’s brought well over a cooking temp to can it. Drink the water in your canned foods as well. It’ll help stretch your water supply. If there is a relief aid going in your area use it until it’s unsafe. If your neighbors are going and you’re not they’ll notice. Consider it payback for the system failing. To not go will make you stand out. It will make you a target.
Yep. I was stunned with the amount of people with a family who thought 8 bottles of water was 'plenty'. The water company has to have electricity to maintain water pressure. We had power 30% of the time, but they just kept the water off until it was over.
3M cable holders and 12v Christmas lights work well also. I was at the chemist a few months back and a guy was pulling down a revlon make up stand. I could see him pulling out 12V LED strips in aluminium tracks about a foot long. I asked him what he was going to do with the LED strips and power units. He was planning to chuck them out. I asked if i could have them. The display had 24 strips in it. He was pappy to get rid of them as less waste for him to get rid of. While walking out he ran up to me and said he had a few more in the van. I got 200 feet of strips and connectors. I was happy as. I have lined all my shelving in my long term storage and have this running of a small solar unit.
Sootch, just go ahead & reroof the house 1st, then ya have a 25/50/100 yr warranty on the roof (depending on roofing materials used.) Then have your solar panels installed… or if you have a large enough property check into having them ground mounted.
@@thebear6751 Be careful. Some of the pitchers are designed to take the chemicals out of treated (potable) water. They are not designed to turn raw water into potable water. Please research before buying.
@@thebear6751 I don't know about the pitchers. I was thinking more of the lifestraw family (~$70) or the lifestraw mission (~$120). I have the family in case of an emergency and I live by a stream. I really can't afford a berkey right now.
You forgot to mention animal traps. They are easy to make with 🪵 wood... I have one that my Granpa made in which he trapped with as a boy, because he was a poor Minister son. All I haft to do is make morr like he made. When I see wood in the garbage I throw them in my car and take it home.
Military maps provide even more details. WGS84 1:50,000 scale is the best for vehicle/foot navigation. Also, HAM operators will be great with providing communication/information. Handheld and base station with a generator will be a huge help to others.
I recently bought Auguson Farms vegetable seeds, they’re already in my prep. I really want a Burkey, but I got a Sawyer filter for the tap until I can purchase the Burkey. I also saw a UA-cam video that showed how to create your own Burkey using the filters, but using plastic containers or stainless steel soup pots stacked to create a Burkey style water filter. I carry hiking food and some canned food in my car emergency kit. I bought a bidet that goes on a soda bottle, it is for hiking, but have it in my prep; it’s called Culo Clean from Amazon. I have a fire kit with ferro rods and fatwood. I have bricks to be able to create a rocket stove.

To the viewer that asked about alternatives for heating your house: You can also take a tea light candle and put a clay flower pot over it and the clay pot will absorb and disperse that heat throughout the area! Make sure that the flower pot has a hole in the bottom so that the candle can still breathe!!

What are the benefits of reverse osmosis water? Reverse osmosis water contains fewer contaminants, has lower sodium, has no parasites or bacteria, and is safer for cancer patients. It filters out pollutants through a membrane filter that doesn't allow solids and prominent microbes to pass through.Jan 21, 2020
Don't want to come on as antagonistic but, on your excellent "wants and needs list", where would the 'disposal of a dead body' fall in? Primarily for the 'city/urban/suburban prepper, digging a hole in NYC or SFO might be impractical, frowned on and obviously unsanitary. Shovel - have a couple (hopefully, the ground isn't frozen). Body bags; have six (military surplus). Gloves - got 'em. Lyme - have two five gallon buckets. Cremation - don't want to waste fuel or other essentials on the dead. Multi-story rooftops might work. Abandoned dogs get feral-crazy really quick. Let's flesh (pun intended) this out.
Abandoned property or abandoned railroad strips where the rails are pulled up would be a zone for body burial. As far as feral dogs, be careful of them. A lady in our neighborhood was walking with her friend. A dog attacked her and bit down into her hand. Her friend had a walking stick and was able to whack the dog attacking her. This is why a cane or walking stick is so important.
Honestly to answer your question you take your dead deer and put it threw a wood chipper and collect ALL the pulp and dump it into a septic tank just not your septic tank the fescies inside the tank will break it down faster over time and cover the smell but you will want to clean everything after with bleach and ammonia to make sure its clean and then hose everything down with a pressure washer to finish cleaning up I recommend watching some movies to inspire yourself good luck
I hope one of you guys will respond to this comment. I have a heart condition. I have to take certain medications every day. No pharmacy will allow me to get more than a 90 day supply. They won't refill my prescription unless I'm completely out. How can I get a supply as back up. If the SHTF occurs with only a weeks worth of meds left and pharmacy's are closed or ravaged I'm up a creek. So no matter how prepared I am with food, water, gear etc. I may not last as long as my food etc, without my meds. What can I do to get an adequate supply of meds I need to survive an extended SHTF senario.
Stephen - talk to your doctor. Tell him what you want to achieve (3 month stash, for instance). Ask him to prescribe a double dose of medication per day - have the pharmacy fill the increased dose. Take single dose and stash the rest. If your insurance (if applicable) balks, just pay the pharmacy without submitting the prescription for reimbursement. My 2 cents…
@Chris B look it natural ways to heal heart conditions! I know sounds crazy but we have been taught we cant heal naturally but we can the body can heal anything but they don't want us to know that. Google healed heart condition naturally see what comes up or look on youtube. There is not one disease that has not been healed naturally if someone else can do it so can you. Worth a try better to do it now when you have access natural herbs and such. God created a cure for any disease . If you pray first God please lead me to a natural affordable cure it will be easier. @@Divinefemininemiracles it depends on your location. We only need to go like 20-30 feet down so I actually had already started pounding it in. I should have finished it but we needed more pipe and we ran into money issues for a minute and then winter hit so I had to wait. Speaking of roofs. My grandfather pit on tin over the shingle roofing. I also was at at place where a heavy rock fell on the roof during the day. It hit and rolled down. The 1lb propane bottles you can get in any camping section store safely indoors indefinitely. They’re are dozens of small cooking stoves that run on those that CAN be used SAFELY indoors (cooking w propane is NO different than a natural gas stove top!) But propane IS fine…. crack a window if you’re really worried.

Have more kids so they can be passed down longer ;p Just kidding. I buy the growing kids cheaper boots and we do pass things like that down from one to the next and so on if they aren't worn out.
Get them at a thrift store, then. Since none of us know when our own personal SHTF event will happen, having solid foot protection over rough terrain and broken glass is a good investment. Network with family/friends/neighbors, disinfect the boots and pass them onward. I grew up on a ranch, so I have a different outlook on things, but getting a pair of boots for my birthday or Christmas was fine. Lasts longer than some electronic junk from China.
Reverse Osmosis’ MAIN job/purpose is to remove the salt content from water! I’m no expert but I think you still may want to filter or treat the water afterwards before it’s drinkable.
Unless the technology has changed, one thing which will damage the RO membrane is chlorine. Most residential RO systems have both a physical filter canister and activated charcoal canister inline ahead of the RO canister to keep particulate and chlorine away from the membrane. Replacing the AC and sediment filters, which are relatively inexpensive, is important to preserving the life of the RO canister, which is usually the most expensive cost in the setup.

What chemicals are in the pool? Is it chlorinated or saltwater? Is it exposed to bird droppings and such or covered? It's not about the source of the water, it's about the water.
A lot of variables in the question. Normally, yes it will. If the pool is not maintained, that will put more stress on the filter. I used to clean a full size pool at a condo association. People would put on sun tan lotion and then jump in the pool, and all that had to be scrubbed off the tile. We had a sand filter with a pump, but that had to be backflushed far too often. Imagine all that gunk on a charcoal filter system and you see the issues. Same reason you prefilter water from a river/stream/pond. Removes leaves, sediment and all that to take stress off the filtration system being used. Fish pee in lakes, just like your cousin does in your pool Berkey will handle it.
@@james0000 some would be stored in food safe, plastic containers, inside the house. Our 275 gal. container is outside, completely covered with a tarp, so it has all the weather extremes, freezing cold, heat, etc.
@@alpacahouse-wheaton4668 275 gal makes me think it's an IBC, hopefully HDPE. Unless you sanitized the inside very well and only ever put sterile water in, then 6 months is the expected lifespan for water as far as I know. 6 months is a long kept standard for self-filled containers of water. 5 years with moderate precautions and possibly longer than you can live with extreme precautions. When I say sanitize, I don't mean cleaned very well, I actually mean that you used a sanitizing agent that was still present as a film when you filled it with water. If possible, best to replace the ambient air with a more inert gas that lacks both oxygen as well as CO2 and CO. The colder and more still the better. Cold reduces various growth (metabolic) of whatever gets in and still slows the eventual friction of water against a surface. In reality, you shouldn't be depending on containered water for longer than 6 months at a time though and you should always have additional filtering/purification available. The cleaner the input water, the longer the filter media can filter. On the other extreme... living water can last indefinitely as it's part of an ecological cycle, but it wont be as pure and there will be more chances for contamination... such as if the ecosystem has trouble. Meanwhile, I have no doubt there is someone who has drank from much older water stores. Now... if you rig that 275 gallon tank to be a buffer in your normal water system, it will be constantly flushing itself out... but you'll be reliant on the quality of water entering it. Same kind of pros and cons as with normal water towers. I use a well and have debated installing a small water tower. I can't imagine you should have trouble finding ways to completely rotate your indoor water supplies though along with the occasional complete flush and refill. I'm no expert though, so it's up to each of us to research and gather information from many sources (as you are doing). I wish you the best!
6 months to a year. Bottled water will start to pick up a 'plastic' taste after a while, but still safe to drink. However, you want to keep it away from sunlight and heat, as algae will be a problem and degrade the water much faster.
These are things that people should have been prepping for years. If you're just starting, do the best you can and get a good water supply store up right now so that you have clean water already on hand. Stay positive! 👍

@Gabe Chacon True, but it's better than NO option. If a person is on an extremely tight budget, storing water in sterilized water or milk jugs is better than not storing water at all.

I wish there were more uk channels perhaps you could start one.
Bought favorite discontinued boots used and half a size larger.
trail cams along the driveway are also good . Specially when you are in town and come home to something
My neighbors who are Amish plant all their food and have animals. When I asked them about the prices and their making ends meet, they told me that the only thing they buy at the store is boots for themselves and the children. They hadn't heard about the economic conditions like we are facing.
Gardening & fertilizer for this year should be purchased early this season
Have chickens and rabbits. They serve food purpose unlimited based off eating off land, and fertilizer. Chicken coup bedding and all built up during winter, rabbit, left overs from veggies and fruit, NO meat, lime, and worms. Dig ft square by 6 deep dump it all in amd mix while pile. Let sit over winter, great for natrual fertilizer.
@@issuesthatmatter2825 can't you just put the poop in a tote mix it with water and use it that way as fertilizer also?
Nobody ever mentioned these, but I think that keeping some emery board nail files in a kit is a good idea- not only are they very flammable as wood sticks, but each one has two sides with a different grit of sandpaper, which may come in very handy, plus they are flat and weight nothing, they will fit into any size of kit. Thanks for all the great info and advice you guys put out!
8 boxes of matches at the Dollar Tree for $1 (or $1.25 now)… cheap way to stockpile fire starters
I think communications should at least be on the need now list. Even if its a small crank am fm radio. Preferably a HAM, if SHTF you need to know whats going on out there.
Thank you ALL for sharing such tremendous knowledge and resources with us.
Mine for Missouri even shows how Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee all join together.
do you have link for the one you have im in Missouri as well.
Wow! And it's just beginning. Get what you need anyway.
Usually .50¢
I might "borrow" an extra pair or two of gloves @ the Dr.

I've been wanting to buy some can you provide a link because I keep finding Pool Shock that has different additives and alge killing chemicals.
Nice tip on the cash! I just withdrew some but all 100s

During the power outages in Texas last year, municipal water was intermittently turned off too.
Yep. I was stunned with the amount of people with a family who thought 8 bottles of water was 'plenty'. The water company has to have electricity to maintain water pressure. We had power 30% of the time, but they just kept the water off until it was over.
Thank you once again for your advice. Your comments are very helpful.
I have some LED lights strung up around the house for emergency lighting. I am using a yellow top deep cycle battery for low current!

My 2 cents…

The 1lb propane bottles you can get in any camping section store safely indoors indefinitely. Buying boots for your entire family is not feasible. Kids grow And before you know it you are buying brand new boots at hundreds of dollars

It can be a good thing to maintain some tolerance for water that is not filtered but otherwise safe to drink.
Agree, no need to filter fresh rain water if the collection surface is clean....ish. i grew up in a rural environment. The school had 23 students. Our drinking water came of a 90 year old tin roof. No filtration at all and a doubt that roof was ever cleaned.

Can a Berkey REALLY filter pool water?
I mean, REALLY. Drinkable water from pool.
Please advise.
@@james0000 - chlorinated under screened patio.
@@durgan5668 - no lotion, chlorine, sand filter, screened in, private pool. Berkley could handle it if needed?
@@glockman9c what kind of chlorination. Is there an alge killing chemical?

How long can you store water in a container, and it is still safe to drink?
That will depend on the composition of the container and the water, as well as temp. Ground water is often thousands of years old.
However, you want to keep it away from sunlight and heat, as algae will be a problem and degrade the water much faster.

nice what about the ones that are on very tight budget. you show some very expensive items on your channel don't mean to be so blunt
These are things that people should have been prepping for years. If you're just starting, do the best you can and get a good water supply store up right now so that you have clean water already on hand. Stay positive! 👍
If you're on a budget (as am I) sterilize Milk, Soda or water bottles and refill with water. Don't let the "Cadillac" preparedness items stop you. DO What you can with what you've got. Just be prepared.
@@cheryltompkins3090 MILK JUGS ARE MADE TO BREAK DOWN. NOT A VERY GOOD OPTION
@Gabe Chacon True, but it's better than NO option. If a person is on an extremely tight budget, storing water in sterilized water or milk jugs is better than not storing water at all.
@@cheryltompkins3090 , i agree. I store all of my Berkey water in trader Joe's sparkling water bottles. They are a wonderful option, they are sturdy, and they fit in empty wine boxes that I also get from trader Joe's. Easy to stack, easy to store, and through just normal use I've built up enough to last for 3 months. And that would include careful bathing and drinking water for our dog.
I recommended an fbi field agent to watch this most recent content he was most intrigued.

What is the official site for Berkey?
Seems the first reply I made has been blocked and I didn't even put the com at the end. "Berkey Water Filter" without the spaces and the TLD is COM
@@james0000 Thank you. Weird it was blocked.
@@landandsea22 I try not to even post links any more, because they are blocked so many times. This was odd because I didn't have a link but I did spell it out and I guess that was close enough. After posting anything like that I normally open the comment in browser where I am signed out, so I can see if it's being blocked... since the posts will sometimes continue to show up to the person who posted the comment, even though they don't show up for others. It's not just UA-cam, a lot of comment sections have been stopping direct links. OpenWeb, used for a many news agencies comment sections, is really bad about doing this.
What I find funny, is that you'll see where people put sentences back to back by accident and the system will think they are links and include them, but since the pages don't exist, they don't get blocked. lol
