Grew up riding XC in the 90s. Bike was rubbish but had so much fun. Owned a few nicer bikes since, but can’t beat the excitement and adventure of riding rough, rock strewn “trails” (on bikes without suspension), with your mates and getting home sometime around sunset.

Save up to 1k and you get some decent bikes. Modern bike geometry is important. If you save a bit more. I have seen a full sus for 1.7k with full six. Anyways I love hardtails because super efficient and easy to maintain.

I had that very same Scott Scale 50 and absolutely loved it. Bought it in around 2005 and only sold it in 2021 after I cracked the head tube. (I re-soldered it first)

Is it more bike than you need? Almost definitely.
Is it fantastically good fun, as well as better cardio & sprint training than on anything smaller? Almost definitely.
Is a 180mm freeride bike the most giggle inducing, smile generating, off-piste descent encouraging rig available for less than 1k? No question.

Just get a 29er that has been proven and call it good. My 2011 Epic FSR is only a few seconds slower on my local trail segments than my 2022 DC race bike. It’s more about the rider than anything else. There is a line though. Showing up with a 1992 Stumpjumper M2, while once awesome, will be a considerable disadvantage to your competitors.

Does money really matter in XC? Well, sometimes yes and sometimes no.
It depends actually, if you really go to XC track and have set your mind to go XC like the pro athlete did, even though you're not an athelete, yeah, money does matter.
Believe me, a brand new XC bike that cost you about 50-100 pounds are really rubish. I learned that in the hardest way and had a very disappointing result 😅😅😅.
