  • Comparing 3 very viable options for the modern filmmaker. Do you manually focus video? Then vintage lenses might be your best option.
    Full Res Screen Grabs from Resolve: we.tl/t-4oRa4pP0eB
    Shot on the Fuji XT4 in FLOG. Test shots were with the Eterna LUT with no other adjustments. Exposure was matched as best as possible.

    very VERY helpful video. I have to be honest - the fuji performed the best wide open. I kind of liked the colors out of the canon compared to the ziess man.......IDK I have to keep watching.
    EDIT:
    Ok so if I needed to do wide open - the fuji is the way to go at 1.2, it looks dreamy while still a great amount of sharpness. The other two, I wouldnt shoot those wide open. Once you go to about f2ish f2.8ish on the fuji then its def way too sharp compared to the other two lenses. Thats when they look PERFECT in my opinion at around f2ish.
    Good video!

      Spot on analysis!!
      I give the zeiss just a slight edge over the canon due to just a little more sharpness on the Corners wide open and at f2. There is also something cinematic about the color rendition to this lens IMO opinion. I can’t describe it. But that is clearly subjective.
      If anything, this test should show that you don’t need to throw your money at new expensive glass to get the job done! The Canon FD lens is 10% the cost of the Fuji but way more than 10% the lens.

    Very interesting test thanks! I personaly own Contax lenses and yes they are fantastic. I compared bokeh (keeping in mind that Fuji's focal length is a little bit longer) and I must say that Fuji's is the smoothest and the more aestetic. Contax's is in second place and Canon's in third place. I don't know the reason why vintage lenses' bokeh is very smoth on film and not as smoth (and rather strange in fact) with digital cameras...

    When I tell you this is EXACTLY what I was looking for! thank you. In my opinion I'd take the Contax Zeiss over all of them, especially if you can get a good deal. Has that cinematic look without being overly soft which I kind of saw with the canon wide open. As well as something the way it renders is beautiful! I have been trying to decide between this and the 50 F2 ( I already have the 23 1.4) so want something different for next focal length but still can hold its own. Thank you!

      @@CDizz143 Awesome! Glad this helped. Both the Zeiss and FD have a less clinical look to them, but I tend to agree. The Zeiss is actually usable wide open where the FD is not. At f2 their they are both pretty good but I still give the Zeiss the edge. Just has more pleasing colors and I love the way it renders skin tones. The Fuji 56mm is incredible and such a sharp lens, but I have found that it is too sharp when not wide open and honestly it is too clinical. Still my workhorse for photography though.

      link here! I tried a different one and it actually wouldn't lock on to the lens. So I would definitely get this exact one. I also am updating the description with a download link to the full res screen grabs from this video so you can view it without the YT compression so check those out if you'd like!

    Is the Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 S.S.C
    Radioactive? It has Yellow/Orange in the Glass

    I really wonder how far off we are from being able to apply some form of machine learning to extrapolate some of the visual nuances of certain lenses and to them apply them in post using some kind of fancy mapping. This could possibly open up a whole new world of possibilities once you start blending these different algorithms. That Fuji looked really great!

      I honestly bet we aren’t too far off. I’m blown away with how accurately we are able to emulate film these days. It’s a good time to be a creator!

    My stepmother found a 50mm f1.4 fd lens for 5 dollars on a garagesell.. but it's not the ssc version. Havent tested it... waiting for my adapter.. is it a big difference between ssc version and not? Nice video btw. Can't wait to try it on my xt5 🥳

    Great test. A modern good lens is way sharper wide open. The Zeiss and FD are super close with Zeiss having slightly nicer rendering side by side but the FD is pretty much 95%+ as good as Zeiss in IQ but miles cheaper.

      @itsaaronmiller  3 роки тому

      Yes agreed for the most part! But I need to follow up with a test with bad lighting. The FD flares in some bad ways. That’s my only complaint really with it!

    Good video thanks! Have you tried the IBIS with the canon fd 50mm lens. Would be nice to see.

    • @itsaaronmiller
      @itsaaronmiller  3 роки тому +1

      That’s a good idea! I will say that the ibis with the 56mm is much better from what I’ve noticed. But I’ll try to throw together a comparison!
