Honestly I feel in love with the EOS M just watching your Video
Appreciate it man! More vids soon with the camera...love it ;)
@@ZeekEOSZ that would be great. More like a mini series

I could watch your content all day long without getting bored. Well, at least that‘s what I did today
Haha, really appreciate it 😎👍 For feedback, What did you like most about it? The sample images or videos provided?

Thanks a lot, really appreciate it man! All the best 😎🙌
Man the colors are amazing.
The FD lenses are great with this 😎👌🎥
thank you so much for taking the time to create and post this video keep up the great work this is a fantastic working video example of vintage fd lens quality
No problem at all 😎👍
In my latest video I compare this lens with my other vintage lenses. 🎥🔥💯
It’s my favorite of the FD lenses I own
Awesome! When it came in, instantly I noticed it had a bigger glass than my 50mm F1.8 nFD, feels solid in hand! ;)
Nice one! Loving the video quality ;-) Can't wait to get my old EOS M back from my friend to get Magic Lantern loaded on. I use vintage M42 lenses on my EOS M3 and I get great photos with the standard software but I can't match your video quality!
These M series cameras are great for photos, ML Raw does make a difference, though it has minor drawbacks. All on all its a fun tool to pair with vintage gear and get great quality results at a low price. Good luck 😎👍

Indeed, a beauty 😎👌💯
Got this lense on my SonyA7 but never thought actually about filming with it. Thank you for inspiring .
It'll be awesome! I use it with my Sony ZVE10 👌🔥
@@ZeekEOSZ I've just bought the ZVE10 and already have a Canon A1 with this lense. I can't wait for the adapter arrived to explore filming the ZVE10 with this 50m f1.4 lense! Could you share your thoughts about that suit? Thank you!
i've shot pretty much exclusively with this lens for about a year now and it really is great. stopping down to f2 really increases it's resolution and contrast! i don't know how much 120 AUS dollars are in € but that lens is available for around 70€ in a pretty good condition in europe. a lot of fun to be had! there are also speedboosters from FD to EF-M and i'm using one of those with my m50 and this lens. i can shoot most things below ISO 1000 with it :)
Awesome :) I wanted as much DOF as possible also as much character as I could get, wasn't to worried about acheiving sharpness. In this video I used the FD To EOS M speedbooster, it's the best :)
That intro alone made me subscribe!! 🤣🤣
Amazing footage! Keep rollin :) Have that lens too it's awesome! Can recommend it for photo too!
Thanks! Will do! It sure is a beauty ;)

Great video as always, love the pull focus effects and spectacular lighting with great editing, you seem to have good weather in Australia. I have many FD lenses from my days with the Canon F1 and FTB bodies, glad I kept them all as I had a big collection, perfect for video and stills even today, love the humble Canon EOS M produces such good video with Magic Lantern, much more stable now with a wide choice of resolutions and crops factors, the video editors get better everyday, I love using Davinci Resolve and will get myself a new Apple Mac Mini with the M1 chip to make my editing more enjoyable
Yeah, these lenses feel solid honestly and with the Natural look they provide, you can't go wrong. The Mac mini should be game changer and DaVinci Resolve is Sick!! 😎👌💯
Some great colours. Each lens has its own signature. The challenge is discipline, learning to make do with one or two 50 mm primes and resisting the temptation to get one more cos its not too expensive, I see on UA-cam people with over 10 different 50 mm vintage lenses, and at that point I wonder, how much use do each of these lenses get, or its become like those really well heeled people who buy as many as 10 or more cars just to have them - kind of a bit selfish and just for bragging rights - and this collectivism must be driving up the prices of vintage lenses unnecessarily and keeping them out of the hands of some.
I am glad I have the Canon FD 50mm 1.4 nFD - started using it a few days ago, and the few images I have been able to take (cos its winter and gets dark early) have been well received - mostly portraits. 50mm on an APSC- with effectively 75mm focal length after factoring in crop factor is really great for portraits - close ups and head+body shots... Pretty sharp even when at maximum aperture of f/1.4, which is how I've taken most of these portraits. Now I fear that this wonderful comment on this lens will drive the price up again - Sadly.
The prices rise and fall, I think people.just like collecting these lenses and in general, the 50mm's F1.4 are cheaper than say a 24 F.14 or 35mm f1.4. also a lot of good unique lenses around the 50mm range like the Pentax 50 and Takumar 50 F1.4. Each lens does its job differently and will obviously provide a different look.
Fun fact. The optical design of this FD lens is the exact same as the EF version. Even Canon Lens Museum says so.
Yep that's the look..same as chrome nose version?
nFD are Multi-coated, I believe the chrome nose versions are s.c Single-Coated. 🎥👌
Great video. Can you also get the FDN 50mm 1.2 and do a comparison, please?
Comparisons have already been made between these two. I would get the F1.4. The better options would be the 55mm F1.2 S.S.C or the 50mm F1.2L.
Another reason to get the f/1.4 over the f/1.8 - the 1.4 uses Super Spectra Coating, whereas the f/1.8 is the *only* FDn (newFD) lens to only have the older and cheaper Spectra Coating.
Good point! I noticed straight off the bat better micro contrast with the 50 1.4 nfd
Bought one for €60! Can't wait to try it on the BMPCC 6k
I can suggest you to test zenit 50 f 1.2, amazing crop lens for 150$!
Nice! I've been hoping to get my hands on the Helios 44-2. Never tried one before, only the 44m. I'll look out for the Zenit 1.2, I've seen the cheaper 50mm f1.7.
What happened to the market? Suddenly the 1.4 goes for more than 100 bucks!? I bought my ae1 with 3 lenses for 70 bucks 10 years ago and people would pay 300 for that
I know. Lots of exposure these days (no pun intended 😉)
When you inverted this lens and use like macro, have the best resolution!!! lens sweet point at f: 5.6...
Nice to know 😎👍🍻
I wish it was spring here in Europe aswell xD. Awesome shots Zeek. What adapter are you using? It looks like you have a speedbooster as there are optic elements on the shot with the adapter. Thanks
Thanks man! I used a Canon FD Speedbooster to EOS M 😎👌💯🎥
Looks great!

found this at a thrift shop attached to a cannon T90 (1985) $25.50 for both - seems like a pretty good deal just getting into photography.
That's a great deal for sure! 😎🤙🎥🔥
creative intro
Haha cheers! 😅👍
Stunning footage. Can this Canon FD 50mm F1.4 be mounted on a Canon EOS M50 without any stabilizers/Speedboosters?
Yes, you just need FD to EOS M Adapter. The speedbooster will just help give it a wider field of view and more light.
Great vid as usual! I have a bunch of FD, Takumars & C/Y Zeiss all great! In shoot the 50 1.4 also 😊 I want to try the 24 f/2 or 2.8 someday!
My question is about a possible online reference page(?) defining the various resolutions & crops modes for ML for EOS M? It’s very confusing to figure out in the field the different choices when testing.
Any ideas? Thanks you’re an awesome resource! The king of EOS M!!!
Cheers Daniel! I hope to cover the crop factors and resolutions with ML RAW on the EOS M soon. This has been on my priority list for sure!
Vs SMC Pentax 50mm F1. 4 which one d u prefer?
Both, couldn't chose one over the other, different render, different bokeh. Pentax looks cinematic like Zeiss Contax, Canon FD looks natural and organic. Both are great. Canon FD Construction feels more solid.
Do you know how to plug FD to EF mount?
It will only become macro with EF Systems due to the Flange distance.
This is awesome, the sharpness, the color you didn't get any artifacts... can you make a video on just setting and post process of 1080 raw 14 bit footage?
also, do you use the picture profile? i mean you say its slightly graded so you have almost that colors from start?
This is pretty much the exact same Davinci Resolve workflow that I used for ML RAW Video:
ua-cam.com/video/hb3iE5djAt0/v-deo.html
I used Lightform N as the Picture Profile, but that doesn't influence raw video, only the photos. In Davinci, just enabled Rec 709, added little saturation and fixed the highlights/blacks, and done. Then ordered in FCPX as it's a more comfortable Editing Platform for me.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks!
How does this lens compare to the one in your newer review the super takumar f1.4 lens
Both are good honestly, just different characters. I couldn't chose one over the other, just depends.on the look you want. FD will be sharper wide open, but Takumar to me looks more cinematic and FD more organic.
Sexiest EOS M video intro EVERRRRR, bro!! 🍷🍷 So I guess your "director's cut" is on OnlyFans, yes? 😅 Haha. Thanks, man, I'm looking into buying some FD lenses, and this looks excellent! Cheers
Hahaha lol 😎🙌

@@ZeekEOSZ 😅 Very welcome. Awesome, gonna get some of those lenses, for sure. Appreciated, my brother. 😎
This is so amazing!!! I honestly feel like I couldn’t get these shots with the R6 I have!
Do you recommend the artisans 55 or this lens more?
These shots were with the FD to EOS M Speedbooster so more depth of field. The 7Artisans 55mm F1.4 is a native lens, but honestly, that lens is a DOF & Bokeh Beast. Love that lens and you couldn't go wrong with either.
@@ZeekEOSZ haha good answer
Thanks for your great videos. They are a great inspiration for my leisure activities. I am about to reactivate my Canon M and would like to use the lenses of my Canon Ae-1. However, I am a little confused as to whether I should use an adapter or a speed booster. A speed booster for the FD lenses for the EF-M mount is difficult to get here in Germany. Therefore, my assumption would be to only use one adapter. What disadvantages or advantages would that have? Can you use the lens well with an adapter? This is not completely clear from your video and I look forward to your answer!
You can use a normal FD to EOS M Adapter and that's fine. The speedbooster allows more light into the sensor, so you get shallower depth of field and as well as a 'wider' field of view. It's not necessary, but it is great.
Please what kind of adaptor can I use to attach my FD 50mm 1.4 lens to my canon 5D mark 3? Anyone?! Help!!!
You need to mod the FD Lens to EF Mount, there are mod kits. There are Glass's adapters I've tested for my 5D2, but they're so bad in image quality.
@@ZeekEOSZ thanks so much! Can I just use the ones without glass?
@@Vixentopnotesyou will.only get macro focus.
I love your EOS M cinematics so much. i know this might be a bit of a nooby question but is Magic Lantern Raw only for video? can you take raw photos with eos m? pls im a big noob
Nope, it's both for photo + video which is cool. Hidden Gem ;)
@@ZeekEOSZ I don't have ML yet, but I noticed in the Canon Menu you can select RAW for photos. Is there a difference between that RAW and the ML RAW for photos? Thanks.
@@st.michaelthearchangel7774
No difference ;)
Hello, may I know how you change your aperture? I have the same lens and was planning to adapt to a mirrorless with just a normal adapter mount but the lens itself doesn't change aperture when u turn the aperture ring.
There are screws on the back you need to twist.
You canook it up, just type Canon FD aperture not working and they'll show you. You need to adjust the screws at the back.
The 1.4 have yellow coating? Is that lens radioactive?
No, at least not mine. Possibly the S.C/S.C.C
Zeek, do you use the zebras for focus? I have a love hate relationship with manual lenses due to the focus issues and my eye sight, I often miss the sharp focus.
With ML, it's easy to nail focus. You can have a small 3:1 magnification box to assist with focus as well as false Live View oversharpen to enhance the subjects and acquire better focus.
@@ZeekEOSZ :) Thanks!
Hi Zeek, thanks for this video. Always topics that are of interest !
I've originaly purchased an M50 to upgrade my photography gear from the Canon G3X. Unfortunatelly there's no Magiclantern for the M50, but as we all know from your chanel: the original EOS M is really cheap by now, and it is the real digital Bolex with Magiclantern ;)
Anyways...I try to get gear that fits as many purposes as possible...so initially I got the new Canon 50mm STM 1.8. Plastic fantastic...and I think it shows, I'm really not that happy with the look i get from this and that it's in both photos and magiclantern raw videos. I don't know, there's just something, too sharp, too plasticky, too cool that bothers me about the results I get from this lens. And of course, only focus by wire is no help for video as well.
Therefore I started to think about the Canon 50mm 1.4 USM....the one that most photographers advise against, because its almost 3x as expensive as the 1.8 STM and not really that tak sharp wide open. Still, I think this could work better for me, as it has usable autofocus for photography (something which an adapted FD lens does not have) and at the same time manual focus does also work and is not just focus by wire. Do you have any experience with the 1.4 USM ? Do you think this lens could do it all well: photography and videography ? I have the Canon 85mm 1.8 USM and I really love it for both. The design of these USM lenses is older( but not as old as the FD), I think, so in theory also the 50 1.4 USM could have a more creamy vintage look. Cost wise it is about the same, for the FD I would need the FD Speedboster (I have the Viltrox for EF lenses, already).
I would appreciate if you could give me your opinion. Thank you !
I have used the Canon 50mm F1.4 USM. You won't notice much difference from the 1.8 STM other than a faster aperture. It won't look vintage. At the same time I had the old Sigma EC DG HSM 50mm F1.4 EX which by far crated both better photos and videos. The lens is fantastic. The plasticky feel will be in the 50 EF 1.4 too so no getting away. The old Sigma 50mm will fill more solid and creates better bokeh and overall image quality. For manual stuff I love 7Artisans native Eos m mount.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks for taking the time to answer me this quick ! Good to know, you just saved me a lot of hassle, buying a lens only to find out that it's still plasticky would not have been much fun :) I will look around for the Sigma.
I only own the 7artisans 35 f1.2 EF-M. My personal impression is, that it can be a really fun, retro vintage look, with lots of flare, vignette and a touch CA. Also, not the sharpest lens wide open. To me the 7artisans 35mm 1.2 is quite similar to the vintage Kern-Paillard Bolex RX C-Mount lenses I own. It's a very distinct, vintage look. Definitely fun for video. But I prefer it a little bit more neutral, so that it feels, that I can do more in post. I noticed you have tested other 7Artisans lenses and not the 35 1.2...maybe I should give 7artisans another shot with the 25mm 1.8 as it's really not expensive at only around 70. On the other hand, I should keep my current gear aquisition syndrome within tolerable levels: I'm still dreaming of reducing the amount of gear...have the same lenses for photo and video (I like AF for photo) and have Magiclantern on the M50 :)
@@notthesame3606 The 7Artisans lenses are amazing. Would highly recommend them. I used to use the 12mm with the EOS M50 for UA-cam, they're a nice combo. The 25mm is actually really good too. Manual focus is a pleasure with these lenses.
@@ZeekEOSZ Hi Zeek, finally I could purchase the old Sigma EC DG HSM 50mm 1.4 EX. I have some problems with my M50: I have to manually disable all the lens correction features and I can not use evaluative metering. Do you remember having the same issues with the M50 ? As you can imagine: remembering to switch up to 4 settings whenever I change the lens back to a more compatible one is not really a good option. So, I started looking into possible firmware updates: I would like to leave the M50 on 1.0.2, as 1.0.3 is not downgradeable anymore and introduces anti firmware tempering mechanisms that could prevent a possible future install of Magiclantern.
On the Sigma side, except from many disencouraging posts stating that a firmware update for older lenses is not possible at all, I've found this: www.sigma-global.com/en/download/lenses/firmware/a_50_14/
Unfortunately: there's not a single mention of what type of cameras should be able to perform such an update. The M50 itself seems to be way to modern for this, so I tried to use the original M. Unfortunately the M seems to have no drivers for Windows 10. That's where I'm stuck for the moment...and I thought, maybe I just better ask you, before finding an old OS where the whole thing could maybe work :)
Do you have any ideas about this ? At the moment I'm thankful for any hint or tip that I can get...google and the rest of the internet, didn't help too much.
@Zeek. My appologies, Zeek, turns out the lens is actually really great :) I just returned from a first field test.
The firmware update link I've found seems to relate to the newer ART series...still have no clue, which cameras update the ARTs without the dock using an ancient looking Windows only Sigma sofware. Tested this with an ancient Windows machine...although Windows has the driver for the camera now, the Sigma software does not detect the lens & camera, and I guess by looking at the firmware revisions which coincidently seem to be the exact same as for the ART series, I figured, the software would most likely also only work with those newer lenses.
Anyways, I think, that the entire metering was unusable, because I first noticed only, that "Evaluative mode" wasn't working at all and giving huge issues with Av and other modes. I first switched to "Partial metering" which gives metering that is too dark around 3 stops. Now I switched to "Center weighted average" which is usable with the lens and seems to give correct exposure with Tv and also Auto ISO, and the like. I will now create a note with the exact settings needed for this lens (All lens corrections disabled, Center weighted average metering) and put it in the lens bag. I tend to forget such things after a while...and it could be tedious to hunt for the correct settings again. So i guess, this is a workaround that is OK for me. I guess there is no such thing as the perfect lens, or camera, except from the EOS M, of course ;)
The old Sigma 50 1.4 is actually fantastic, as you told ! Autofocus is fast, and reliable with the M50. Bokeh quality is really good, very smooth. Sharpness is to my taste. Colors too. So really for photography, the lens is great and much more budget friendly and lightweight than the newer ART series.
So this is a good solution. If you want a lens for both photography and RAW filmmaking. Especially, if you want full frame, for later speed boosting with the Viltrox adapter for video.
Quick test has shown a minimum apperture of f1.0 for this lens with the speedbooster on EOS-M. I'll have to test it, but I guess for Magiclantern RAW filming this will be great.
So, after all, thanks again Zeek for all your help and tips!
This is really amazing!👏🏾👏🏾
How are you able to shoot at ISO 100 and 1/48 shutter without clipping the highlights?? Do you use an ND? And the Canon FD lenses, do they work with the full frame Cameras like the Canon 6D? Thanks Zeek.
Yes, always use a variable ND Outside. FD won't work with EF Mount, endless modded or if you use an FD to EF Glass Correction Adapter which has poor optics.
@@ZeekEOSZ oh crap!! Loool!
Pls can you recommend nd filters and stepup rings you use for your setup? I use the Pentax 28mm f3.5 and it's quite small...(like other vintage lenses) which ND filters can work for them! I had a shoot wedding yesterday ( Canon 6D, ML and Pentax 28mm) and I struggled with blown out highlights ... Which resulted in messing with the shutter speed. 😡😡(Hate doing that but had no choice!)
So which NDs do you recommend?? Thank you for your time Zeek! Truely appreciate.
@@SamuelObafemi
I use budget ones. I use a Zomei Variable ND with non-X Pattern about $25 77mm, then use 49 or 52-77mm Step up rings and I also use K & F Concept Variable ND/CPL 77mm. I also have small 52mm FOTGA Variables. All are great, I could recommend any of them.

do you have experience with canon ef 50mm 1.4 lens? if use it with speed booster viltrex? will this lens give worse results than fd 1.4?
I have used it and personally I don't like it. I do prefer this FD Version, feels more solid, better focus and I prefer the render overall.
can you tell me. will can I get same result with m50 camera. I mean... m50 + focal + fd 50 1.4?
Well 1080 on the M50 looks upscaled and not very detailed in comparison to the Eos M with ML Raw.
Hi.
Answer, please, is it true: "Automatic movie restart is disabled in Magic Lantern"?
Nope, it can be enabled with ML. So if it stops recording, it will automatically record again.
Yes EOS M 1080 RAW is continuous 👍
The X-T30 is nice, for much better AF, the A6400. I wouldn't use the EOS M as a main camera, it's like a cinematic speciality camera , as a b-cam. It's my favourite image by far though. But for quick stuff, the X-T30/A6400 are good options.
Hey there! Any recommandation on a fd adapter ? To use with the M but also the 5d2?
With the 5D2, it will only be macro shots due to the flange distance. The optical correction adapters for FD to EF are bad, can't recommt those.
For the Eos m, I love Pixco FD to EOS M Speedbooster. Plain adapters are also fine. But for me, the speedboosters are the best.
Hi...Zeek,
Let me know the, which adapter u r used for the FD lens in this video....
I have viltrox Speedboaster, which supports EF lens as u know, even I had FD to EF adapter ( glass element one) , that is not good in terms of video output overall....
So please tell me which adapter is good for FD lens....
using FD to EF adapters is not a good idea as they will heavily impact image quality.
I have used the EF glass adapters, in short, they suck. In this video I used a Canon FD to EOS M Speedbooster/Focal Reducer. It's the best, love it and can recommend it off eBay.
RJ focal Reducer in the ebay...., Thank u.
Yes that's the one ;)
Ok...
Hi Zeek 👋🏼
Are you using the new Apple ARM Mac Mini to edit your footages
Nope I wish. Just using the iMac 2017 16GB i7 & Radeon PRO 550. Everything works fine though, very easy with this ML Raw Stuff.
EOS M is like M50 is that right? What adapter did you use for the lens to fit on M series? Thank you if you will notice this comment :)
Yes same mount. I used the FD to EOS M Speedbooster 😎👍
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks @Zeek really appreciate it :)
Hi 👋🏻 Did you use an adapter to fit this lens on the M in this footage or speedbooster? Thanks in advance!
I used an FD to EOS M Focal Reducer
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks for the reply! Is your Viltrox speed booster compatible with all these adapted set ups (fd series, Pentax, etc.) or do you have to get a different speed booster for each set up? Forgive me if you’ve had to answer these questions many times before!
@@jehshik222 The flange distance of the FD won't work with an EF Speedbooster, hence you need a direct FD to EOS M Speedbooster. As for the Pentax, the back lever hits the sensor or Speedbooster glass, so modification is needed or just a basic plain Adapter - PK to EOS M.
@@ZeekEOSZ I’m really grateful for all your help! Your so kind🙏🏻
it works in the 5d3?
No, FD to EF won't work.
how do you feel this lens compares to the helios? I have really good condition canon fd 50mm
Love it. Both are good, just diffferent character, FD Looks more organic, Helios more cinematic.
Is the s.s.c version?
Does it autofocus?
Is $50-$60 USD a good price for a used Vivitar Canon FD 28mm f/2.8 lens?
I don't believe so. You could get a vivitar 28mm f2.5 for that price. I prefer Tokina RMC over Vivitar copies.

@@denmarksoul1184 I own it still, love it! I wouldn't spend more than $100 for it to be honest.
Mine has issues with infinity focus its more of a macro is urs like this?
No. It's because you're use a Canon DSLR perhaps or the wrong Adapter.
@@ZeekEOSZ noo i tested it on other adapters n also tested my other fd lenses, n dont use a canon dslr, i use a sony body mirrorless
Can you help me with buying this lense. I found in sale this lens with “s.s.c.” In title. Is it same?
Yep it's the same, different build quality though and defferent mount lock. Same optics both Multi-coated.
@@ZeekEOSZ thanks. should you help me. i need to know was this adapter you used in your video ua-cam.com/video/3xld2ef5Crs/v-deo.html
I used the one in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/0vi0DD5yoEM/v-deo.html
It's the Canon FD to EOS M Speedbooster/Focal Reducer.
@@ZeekEOSZ what do you think. if I'll take a speed booster viltrex efm-ef and an ef-fd adapter. is it possible to get such quality?
@@o2epc
It will only become macro. FD and EF don't go well together. FD to EOS M will allow focus to infinity.
how do you configure the camera to accept fd lenses?
Just adapt them. Enable shoot without lens in Custom functions menu.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks 🙏🙏🙏
