Tearjerker, I just purchased one of her paintings, she was a gentle soul and a avid painter, mainly nature and flower scenes. She also worked at a plant nursery when not performing and passed away years before she was “discovered” so she never experienced her fame. When Sting heard her recording of his track Fields of Gold he carried around a copy and played it for everyone saying “ this is how it should be sang”, respect
I knew her aunt and grandmother. I visited with them over the years. I never met Eva or her parents, but were friends with friends of theirs. I never knew she was a painter too. Her grandmother Cass used to tie rugs out of rags and was quite artistic herself. She was also an author and wrote a periodical magazine. How nice to learn more about Eva being a painter. How fortunate you are to have her art!
@@georgelynch6139 - interesting. I knew her Aunt Isabel Blithe. Her grandmother’s name was Cass Cassidy. Both lived in Harper’s Ferry, WV. Both are now deceased. Her father’s name was Hugh. I can’t remember if her mother’s name was Barbara or Laura. They lived over in Maryland.
This is the best reaction to this song I have ever heard. Of course pretty much all the other reactors are effected by it. They will focus on her voice and, sometimes, will remark on her guitar skills. But, none of them seemed to really grasp that oneness that was happening, which allowed for that creative flow. Everything she does in this performance is an integration and activation of mind/body/spirit in harmony.
Angelina Jordan and Eva Cassidy are my two favorite female singers currently. Unfortunately Eva passed away in 1996 at the age of only 33 from cancer. She was relatively unknown at the time but when her material was discovered in the year or two after her death, it went viral and she has sold over 20 million albums since, becoming a true legend. Eva sang this at the Blues Alley lounge, where she performed somewhat regularly in her home area of Washington DC. This was 10 months before her passing and it is said she was unaware of her diagnosis at that time. I find that hard to believe based on her performance. As you said, she sang from inside her soul and the way she looked up and with her eyes closed, filled with emotion, I got the impression that she knew. The tone and mood I found extremely haunting but beautiful.
my 2 favourite singers are miley cyrus & the late brilliant opera/x over soprano singer/actress, patricia janeckova, who died last october, aged 25, from breast cancer, a few weeks after getting married! german born slovakian, patricia could also sing in english, see her singing on you tube, 'think of me', 'summertime' & also, when she was just 13, 'over the rainbow' !! 3 songs which demonstrated her real talent, came from a 2016 new year concert, at which she was sensational singing, 'meine lippen', 'mein her marquis' & the 'doll song'! the song which brought her to the public's attention was, 'once upon a time in the west' & 'pie jesu'!!
In my opinion Eva was the greatest cover artist that ever lived. I have never heard anyone deliver the interpretation and nuances like she does. I must have watched fifty reactions to this song, and I must say you did a beautiful job describing this gorgeous piece of music. This woman was indeed "magic". Next try her incomparable version of "Autumn Leaves., or her stunning "I Know You by Heart".
There's nothing like settling in to eat my lunch during my busy day and see that the Arab Man has reacted to one of my patreon suggestions!!! It's PRICELESS! Thank you!
Eva is my second favorite after Lara. Such a hidden treasure for years and now a great influence on so many from the new generation including Angelina Jordan. She died only 10 months after this performance in Blues Alley, and was only discovered 5 years later in UK, immediately topping charts there. She composed herself the finger picking guitar partition to match her voice and her storytelling ! She could sing blues, jazz, gospel, … she was pure, authentic, creative, … What a loss 😢
This song always brings tears, especially when you know her story. She died at 33 of cancer, I believe. I'm so moved by your appreciation of her talent. Other gems are Songbird, Fields of Gold and I Know You By Heart.
You will be finding out so much about her and I'll let the other subscribers fill you in on what her story is. But, it is very fair to say she has left her mark with us with her rendition of this classic song. You know where I'm coming from but there is room to squeeze Eva and her masterpiece into my heart along with Angelina and a newcomer, Emma Kok. After you hear her story play it again and soak it all in. Eva singing 'Over The Rainbow" and Celine Dion singing 'O Holy Night' in a chapel with a chorus are moments when my whole body stops working and I am overtaken by a rush of emotion which never lessens every time I hear them sing these classics.
What a singer! Highly skilled, highly emotional. An absolutely original interpretation of a highly respected standard. Love it! Incredible reaction by Arab Man as usual.
You are so right. Not only did we watch her soul perform but you could hear it like diamonds tinkling on clear night hanging from windchimes. Like she could produce the sound by controlling the air. Did she get to go over her rainbow I wonder. beautiful choice and wonderful reviews.
The incredible artistry on display is absolutely ethereal. The other amazing thing is that this entire performance was captured on a fan's late 1990's video device with the sound quality and shots achieved. I also agree with your evaluation of the way she uses dynamics along with fluctuations in tempo and variations of the melody lines to evoke even more emotion from an already beautifully written song to take it to another level.
One of the best reactions I've heard(and I have heard dozens) to this masterpiece by Eva. Well done, sir. You are one of the very few who focus on her dynamic use of volume and delivery.
Excellent commentary. Yes, her soul is on full display during this performance. You need to listen to more of her performances. They all rip your heart out. Field of Gold, Danny Boy, Time After Time, etc.
So much more touching when you know her story. Very shy person that didn't really like to perform in front of people and now she is somewhere over the rainbow.
That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.
Great reaction. I've loved her version of this song from the first time I heard it. You're right we humans don't just like music, we need it. Sadly, Eva Cassidy only lived to be 33 yrs old.
An absolute masterful and emotionally charged performance of this classic song ! Eva is unbelievably and her vocals just pull at your heartstrings and hypnotize you into her world ! She left this world far too soon and sadly became only really popular after her passing ! God bless this beautiful soul ! Thank you posting this wonderful gem and performance for the ages. I'm glad you finally reacted to Eva Cassidy and if you get a chance, grab a few more tunes from this performance because they are just as mesmerizing to witness. Sending you much thanks and love from Canada 👍🇨🇦❤️
Eva is wonderful. I've been listening to her for over 20 years. Her voice is so beautiful, but she also makes me cry every time - because she's gone, but also because her voice is so beautiful. Thank you for your heartfelt reaction. Also... I Know You by Heart Autumn Leaves Fields of Gold What a Wonderful World and so many more.
Eva Cassidy had the voice of an angel, she was taken far too soon. We played her cover of Field of Gold at my grandmothers funeral many years ago, she always loved it.
Thanks a lot for an amazing reaction to this masterpiece. Because I think THAT is what it really is. This happens to be one of my absolute favorite performances by any singer ever, including Angelina. And people who know me know that THAT doesn't come easy😉 I think that Eva's passing from skin cancer in her early 30's is one of the biggest losses in modern time music, but luckily, though mainly posthumous, quite a few of her performances like this one have become more known to the public. I'm quite sure that you will get suggestions from a lot of people more knowledgeable about her than I am myself. Before I go, I HAVE to mention that there is a beautiful mashup of Eva and Angelina performing Sting's "Fields Of Gold", which I am absolutely positive that you will love. You can find the video on the channel of Chris Walker, AKA BigAngieFan. The latter is the name of his channel. Have a great weekend, Boudy!! Love from Norway ♥♥♥
A masterpiece is indeed what this is. Sting said about "Fields of Gold", "It's her song now". She also owns Over the Rainbow. No one has ever sang it with this emotion and finesse.
Once you see or hear one of Eva's covers, you never are the same. More than a singer, instrumentalist, or performer. She was an artist which touches you deeply. Something that isn't something you can teach. It just came through her soul to you. That is why NO ONE can play this song in her style because they don't feel what she did. Sadly, the world lost Eva within 11 months of that performance.
I must have heard this song a thousands times before but it never meant anything to me until I heard Eva Cassidy sing it. It’s absolutely transcendental. She was such a beautiful talent.
The purity and beauty of her voice captures you with the first note sung. There's no one like her. She also took this very popular song originally made famous by Judy Garland as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and transformed it into her own far more beautiful song. She was also eclectic in the types of songs and genres she sang in, which is why she was never signed to a contract. In those days you had to fit into a niche. The man who didn't sign her and could have, later came to apologize to her when he found out she was dying of cancer. She didn't take it personally. She left us far too soon. Good thing that concert was recorded! She wasn't happy with it since she had a cold and wasn't singing at her best. Could've fooled me! An angel in human form. Her rendition of Sting's Fields of Gold blew his mind when he heard it years after she had died. He told his friend David Foster that it was the greatest version of his song. React to her singing that song next and you'll see what he meant.
This is by far the single best performance of this song period! Gone too soon and no where near enough recordings left behind. I will mention that Angelina did a cover of Eva’s version of Stings Fields of Gold. Kaleidoscope did a mash up of the two of them singing it. Pure beauty
She did this not long before she succumbed to cancer at the young age of 33. She was know in Washington DC where she was from and thank God someone had the foresight to videotape this performance. She had been trying to secure a recording contract but they didn't want her performing all the different genres she was so good at. She played at local Blues and Jazz Nightclubs. Unfortunately she passed away before becoming famous elsewhere. Fortunately this evenings video taping ended up in England where it became very popular a year or two later. Eventually it was shared to wider audiences through the internet, especially through reaction videos on YuTube etc. It was recorded in 1996, the year she died. I didn't hear of her until December of 2023, just a month after my wife of 50 years passed that November. This recording of Over The Rainbow moved me and brought me to tears of joy by the time she finished the first line of the song and only got better as it went on. She literally reinvented this song and made it her own without changing a word. I feel it is being reacted to by many people these days because the God given talent she has is something that I believe God sees many people in need of this type of blessing especially in this present time we are going through.
One of the favorite artists of my life, she was taken from us far too soon. Too much beautiful music we will never hear. Check out another of my favorites, Katie Melua, sing an "impossible" duet with Eva's rendition of Over the Rainbow. BTW, I expect that Angelina Jordan will one day be regarded in this rare class of artists.
Your comments on Eva Cassidy’s Over the Rainbow are phenomenal. You were able to put into words what I have been feeling over the years every time I hear this version . This is my favorite I want played at my funeral. Also, Fields of Gold is another of her masterpieces.
Great catch on noticing the difference between a musician going through the motions, and one who's playing straight from the soul. You're right, it's not a conscious thing, it's a zone that we can tap into when the link between the muscle memory of playing, and the spirit of the emotions in the music becomes a gestalt.
My brother died on 2021 due to Lupus & Covid, and looking at his videos with the family there is one of him playing this song with one of my daughter's. It broked me,😢 Thank you for this beautiful artist...what a voice❤ Sublime and just Perfection🙏❣️
Her version of Fields of Gold moved sting to say it was his favorite. She makes me cry, that voice has the god tone. So clear and just jets out all the emotions of who sshe is and why shes gone and how shhity it was most of us cant see her.
Her version of "Imagine" is incredible. The last song she sang in public was, "Oh, What a Wonderful World", which is also off the charts. It was a shame that she passed in 1996. She wrote and rearranged (this one) and sang her own way. She's playing the melody in the background, while she sings over it. She was remarkable as an artist and it was a great loss when she passed away. Thank you!
My first time watching a reaction by you. I stopped really to just listen to Eva sing this song, again. Like many here, I have listened to this countless times and have listened to many reactions. Your comments are the first to actually describe what I experience when listening to Eva sing this song. Thank you.
Absolutely magic...She left us with a treasured legacy.....and like many others left us too soon. Thank you for this special presentation....i just love her soulful version of this classic song...in fact one of the best versions i have ever heard...I dont compare it to Judy Garland because each had its own magic.
For your information, there is a performance by Angelina Jordan combined with Eva to Sting's song "Fields of Gold" one of the most exciting combinations. Eva did the performance of the song in this way Angelina sang a short part of the song the way Eva did and then the combined editing came...recommended 🦶🦶👑🗣🎙🎷
I work at a bar/ resturant with Uni and a Eva's brother Dan came in all the time and one time he gave me her CD and I have loved her sining ever since. Great singer taken way to soon😢❤
Eva was one of the artists, who made me keep on playing my acoustic guitar. I´m not really good, but playing a guitar, especially with nylon strings, can be a therapy sometimes. The song i will never forget, is her version of "Fields of Gold". It´s mindblowing, she´s an angel - seriously !
One of her band members said that if she didn't connect to a song she would not sing it. I think that is why she emotes so well. So skilled. So delightful. She was a true artist who left us way too soon.
I see that your reaction to this was 2 weeks ago. I only found out about Eva in February. If you are interested in her story, her friends made a short documentary which tells her journey in music and is excellent. Also, Fields Of Gold is breathtaking. When Sting heard her version of it, he said that it was no longer his song, it was Eva's. She was an unknown treasure while she with us. Now she is eternally ours. in the few recordings that we have. I know she is looking from the next world, and so happy to feel the love that we all have for her. 🤗❤
The meaning of your communication is the response you get. That sums up Eva. Probably the greatest conveyor of emotion. She was a stunning singer and guitarist and a shame she never found success in her life but at least we have her now. If you love this listen to Autumn Leaves, Fields of Gold and Songbird.
You just don't hear music today with this kind of dynamics, phrasing and depth of feeling. It so sad to say but I'm so glad we still have these recordings to remind ourselves of how truly magical and moving music can be. What an incredible gift she left us.
"Pure Magic" sums her up so well. He version of Sting's "Fields of Gold" is, in my opinion, even better. Only so well known, here in the UK, thanks to the late, great, Sir Terry Wogan, who championed her music on the radio.
Pure gold, personal opinion, cover that pulverizes both technically and emotionally any other cover... including the original, Eva at an indescribable level, currently I only find in Angelina Jordan the ability to convey unique emotions, thank you, beautiful video and review
Thank you for sharing this and keeping Eva's prodigious musical talents alive for all of the world. She is a true original whose music will live on hundreds of years from now. She has other covers that are just as beautiful and emotional. Time After Time, Fields Of Gold, Autumn Leaves and see just some of her extraordinary range in ones like Stormy Monday and I Know You By Heart and many others. Loves her covers done in Blues Alley. Enjoy.
You really had some especially thoughtful comments re: this performance. There is a documentary that a local Washington DC TV Channel - I think Channel 9 / CBS - did about Eva - for additional context. Her version of Fields of Gold is incomparable. Small side note that almost non one outside of Washington DC will appreciate. She was also collaborating with a local Washington DC Music Legend - the Godfather of Go-Go - Chuck Brown. Just the fact that she was working with this esteemed musician is just another acknowledgement of who she was as a person and her musical talents. And another very sad reminder about how much we all lost when she died way too young
Autumn Leaves, Nightbird, Fields of Gold - Honestly, anything she sings is astonishing, but these three in addition to the one you just reacted to are my favorites
He says music is a core our existence. Did you notice even infants react emotionally to music. Infants "get it" right away.(There's a youtube video that shows an infant reacting emotionally to different styles of his mother's singing). My very earliest memory was of my mother singing to me when I was an infant. ("Once in a lullaby."). I venture some of you have similar memories.
Sadly, Eva lost her struggle with melanoma only 10 months after this video was recorded. Though it's documented she didn't yet know she had cancer during this performance, I've always wondered about the subliminal impact of having this disease to Eva's mental state when she performed this song. We can all feel the emotion that oozes from every chord and lyric performed. Probably, that's just who she always was. Such a beautiful artist. And a tragic loss to her family and every one of her fans.
Greetings. My first time viewing your channel and it won't be the last. Everything you said about the music, playing and singing were spot on. I had an accident over 20 years ago that caused brain damage. I lost most fine muscle memory and graph motor memory. I can no longer play my guitar or piano. Extensive therapy hasn't helped. Though I was never great, I still got lost in the songs that genuinely touched me. And the cool thing is, in that moment, the audience no longer exists. It's you, the guitar and your soul all becoming one. And your audience will feel your connection with the song. That's art! I also have a channel and it's almost the same doing reactions. You can get so into the music that you forget all about the camera, being self-conscious and just live in that moment. It's taken me awhile but I'm getting there. My first reactions were garbage. I'm still not anywhere nearly as good as you are. But the most important thing is in going it because I love music and want to share that with others

I would have loved to have had the chance to buy a painting. She was so gifted and seemed a kind soul.
Her Fields of Gold made me sob hard the first times I heard it and can’t remember not crying anytime a I’ve heard it. It’s just exquisite
I knew her aunt and grandmother. I visited with them over the years. I never met Eva or her parents, but were friends with friends of theirs. I never knew she was a painter too. My thoughts exactly - both teller of tales without peer.
I believe the body knows what is happening even when we do not know.
Hi Lynette, you could be right. I feel it in a different way. I think the soul knows when the mind doesn't.

Fields of Gold is another incredible Eva song. Love her. Gone too soon.

My favorite ever rendition of this song. ❤ Also, her rendition of Autumn Leaves.❤ She's an angel now.😪😇
Her Autumn Leaves is out of this world. She also does a beautiful rendition of Stormy Monday.

Fields Of Gold and I Know You By Heart, just strike at my heart in the deepest of ways. She truly is a national treasure.
Eva is wonderful. I've been listening to her for over 20 years. Her voice is so beautiful, but she also makes me cry every time - because she's gone, but also because her voice is so beautiful. Thank you for your heartfelt reaction.

There is such power in the quietness of her voice.
I get goosebumps on my FACE when I watch this woman's live performances...EVERY TIME. Thanks to your member that suggested this
She does something that it is time and spacial by stretching out the word far in her playing and vocals. Genius Vocalist!

Fields of Gold, always a favorite of mine, is taken to a new level by Eva. Loved your deep understanding of her artistry.
She was a beautiful soul ❤
Love your analysis of the great Eva Cassidy
My brother died on 2021 due to Lupus & Covid, and looking at his videos with the family there is one of him playing this song with one of my daughter's. It broked me,😢 Thank you for this beautiful artist...what a voice❤ Sublime and just Perfection🙏❣️
Her version of Fields of Gold moved sting to say it was his favorite. She makes me cry, that voice has the god tone. So clear and just jets out all the emotions of who sshe is and why shes gone and how shhity it was most of us cant see her.
It was a pleasure watching your reaction, This version always gives me tears, what a beautiful talent Eva Cassidy was
Oh my goodness.. this was.. every thing you said was perfect ❤️!
Thank you.
I have heard Angelina Jordon sing this too.
I want to here Angelina singing it picking away at the Guitar as well.
I loved your Reaction to Ava.
You explained the synchronicity between the singer and the singer, who is also playing, very well. There is nothing else like it.
She has superb phrasing.
Autumn Leaves next please...live
I second that
Absolutely magic...She left us with a treasured legacy.....and like many others left us too soon.
Your reaction is so genuine ... you really understand what you are talking about. You pick up on all those little things that make Eva incredible.
You are absolutely right: we need music! And Eva Cassidy was such an amazing singer, guitarist, musician!
One of her band members said that if she didn't connect to a song she would not sing it. I think that is why she emotes so well. So skilled. So delightful. She was a true artist who left us way too soon.
She pretty much guaranteed that Songbird would be played at weddings forever with her version.
Yes, very emotional. And now that you know her story it will definitely make you cry.
Thank you for your insightful, geartfelt, best ever reaction to Eva singing this song! ❤
The meaning of your communication is the response you get. That sums up Eva. Probably the greatest conveyor of emotion. She was a stunning singer and guitarist and a shame she never found success in her life but at least we have her now. If you love this listen to Autumn Leaves, Fields of Gold and Songbird.
Your analysis is spot on. I'm a guitar player and for me Eva always knows exactly how use her guitar to serve the music she creates. Great review.
You just don't hear music today with this kind of dynamics, phrasing and depth of feeling. It so sad to say but I'm so glad we still have these recordings to remind ourselves of how truly magical and moving music can be. What an incredible gift she left us.
I loved your comments! Thank you. 🎶🙏
She could sing the blues with the best!
Absolute perfection
I've watched a number of reactions to this great performance, and yours is the most perceptive and heartfelt.
There's music you listen to......Then there's music you feel. Eva does it everytime.
You said it in a very great way. Eva Cassidy to me, her songs are so incredibly important. Her voice is that of an angel come down to earth.
It's like there are 2 voices. It's a duet 😊
Perfectly well put on her beautiful emotional performance. ❤
You need to React Nightbird song Eva Cassidy live

Sadly, Eva lost her struggle with melanoma only 10 months after this video was recorded. Though it's documented she didn't yet know she had cancer during this performance, I've always wondered about the subliminal impact of having this disease to Eva's mental state when she performed this song. We can all feel the emotion that oozes from every chord and lyric performed. Probably, that's just who she always was. Such a beautiful artist. And a tragic loss to her family and every one of her fans.
I’d heard someone else say it was a recurring cancer from an earlier bought.
i can't listen to her without crying, she is that good 😪
Her guitar playing is brilliant
He said it all in a few words (and many more spot on ones): ‘the magic of music’.
Everytime I hear this performance I cry don't know why it just happens❤
🎨 I love this show so much. Thank you for bringing so much beautiful music hour away. And thank you again to all the people who recommend stuff.
This one always make me sob.
