Tony, absolutely spectacular video. I don’t know what’s more amazing: the video itself or the fact that there are so many other “option fans” out there like me. And I thought all these years I was the only one.
I never thought i would find someone else who's into the same thing as me in regards to wanting all the options in a car so they upgrade it to have said items. That is so kewl to me. The fact that he added the factory cornering lights, both power seats and a few other options using all FACTORY original wiring and hardware is a person after my own heart. No aftermarket crap just all original just as if you ordered it from the factory that way. Also it's amazing to note that how many Grand Marquis were ordered with the no cost option for cloth seats instead of the leather??? Tony has some of the most rare and unique FLM cards due to the way they were ordered. I just love them.
Beautiful Mercury, love all the added options. Deep down your Dad knew he had a wiring genius on hand when you had his car apart! Can't wait to see the rest of your treasures. Thank you Sir
$2650.00 and low miles? A STEAL even way back then. Lovely black on black exterior and the velour interior is gorgeous. As for the 400, It's a 351 Cleveland (one of Ford's best mills) with a longer stroke. Had one in a '75 LTD wagon years back which I used as my daily driver/work truck. It always performed admirably and never let me down. Never sell her (unless it's to me. lol) The extra work you did to make it a true hard top was fantastic...
Another great video, Tony. I enjoyed the tour of this car and your discussion of how you added the extra options. With respect to the woodgrain: I'm like you, I like them both. I do think the walnut/burled walnut looks slightly richer, but the earlier dark walnut looks a bit more like a dinner club restaurant of the period.
I have 2 cars from my childhood. 1 is my first car, given to me by my Grandparents. 78 2 door Fairmont. I never hit rodded it, but I have changed a few things. I love both of them. One thing I learned is most people who put down your classic for any reason usualy don't even own a classic car.
Beautiful Grand Marquis !!! I've had a couple of 76-77 Lincoln Town Coupes Love them I like the Burell Wood Applique Period correct She's a keeper Cheers from Calgary !!
Picked up a nice original 78 Grand Marquis coupe here in Manitoba, Canadian Kilometer gauge, low km, it has the 460, optional blue velour interior, entry light, power seats and everything yours has....except the functioning rear quarter windows which I think is an awesome addition. did look at many online sites to see if these could function, but found nothing. Your trick could work for me too however have to find a 73 or younger coupe to get the parts. anyways you did a great job. Mine is midnight blue with white vinyl top and has quarter lights inside ( fake convertible clasps that were factory options I think ) I used to own a 79 continental MK5 1 owner from estate sale, imported it to Europe where I was living at the time sold it and it always nagged me that I did. This 78 Mercury however is a more then great replacement and I will never sell this one. Great video, greetings from Manitoba Canada.
Wow, what a beauty! I like that you like options and amazed that you installed what you did. Power seats, int. wipers, cornering lamps. The addition of the aluminum wheels was spot on and they always made the car that much more. Please talk about the other Marquis with the moonroof - we had one when I was growing up and it was my favorite family car of all time. I look forward to the video of the white Collectors Series too, and to see the repair of the door lock solenoid. Thank you so much Tony! Happy Labor Day. PS. I like the woodgrain as you have it.
Thank you! Please bare with me.......I'll get them all done eventually. The Cream and Gold moonroof car wasn't cared for very well at all and needs so much. Of course I only bought it because it has a moonroof! Lol
thanks for the great video . I had a 75 brougham 4 door just out of high school. 4 years old and $1`200 . the all to common fuel filter/ on carburetor caught it on fire. I had if fixed but traded for the new style 79. l like the wood grain in walnut it gave it a elegant look.
Awesome. Love what you did. Made her how you want without taking any original charm away.... but actually adding some. And how you've had it so many years. I have a 78 coupe also.. it's white with red . It's on UA-cam.. 78 mercury grand marquis coupe. Promised the little old lady I'd keep it original..lol. That was 6+ years ago. Still as is from Detroit...but your modifications are tempting. And so glad these cars are now being honored. Which makes yours more special because 30 years ago people were still crushing these beauties..lol. You saved that. I've had offers on mine... but it's a special car as you most definitely know. Not a caddy not a Lincoln... they stand out. Had mine in a car show recently.. They called out top 30.. mine not included. I was leaving..and turns out I was To 15!! lol. Nice surprise. Congratulations on your Mercury..extremely beautiful. Thanks for posting

Hey Tony, beautiful car! I love options too. My first new car was a Mercury Monarch Ghia 4 door. It had every option except for a V8, and a sun/moonroof. It was the same color combo as yours. Also had reclining bucket seats, and quad Am Fm 8 track.
Beautiful car Tony. Love it. I have a silver 76 Grand Marquis pillared four door hardtop, a 77 one in Chocolate brown and a cream 78 Colony Park. All 400 engines. They are handsome cars.

I have not driven a car with a 400, so I can put in my 2 cents. I love the Mercury, I prefer a 2 door car. My daily driver is a 1996 Grand Marquis that I bought from an Estate, it had 77,000 and I took it to my repair shop and told them to go through it. I hadn't heard anything by 3:00 PM and called and they said it's done, $53 for a state inspection and an oil change. It's been a very reliable car. I drive a car that I like, I'm not trying to impress anyone. I feel safer in the Grand Marquis than my girlfriends Camry. The Csmry is a great car, very reliable, it's just not as big as my Grand Marquis. If you come across a 72'-76' Thunderbird in good condition and not crazy money, let me know, I would love to own a Thunderbird again and I will pay a finders fee. Thx. Robert The aluminum wheels fit Ford's, Lincoln's and Mercury's, you just get the proper center cap. I take my 96' Grand Marquis to a Lincoln dealer that was a Mercury dealer. They have 2 Mercury mechanics who know exactly what to do with my car. It's nice to see someone who knows what they are doing with these 70's cars. My Dad had some nice cars, but to him a car was just to get to work etc.. I like the wood paneling in the Grand Marquis, sorry Adam.
@@tonyscarcare5657 I'd love to do away with the cat converter, but we have state inspections. I have no complaints with the engine. It was a mechanics car and he wanted to buy a Lincoln, but couldn't afford it one, so he took excellent care of the car. His son said it was the nicest thing he ever owned, he died from cancer in 2020 and I call it Arthur's car.
I love loaded, fully optioned cars too. I had a 77 Town Car with the cream and cordovan luxury group and pretty much all available equipment. Then, a two tone silver and charcoal 79 Town Car with red leather interior. It was loaded too, even had built in C B and outside thermometer.
It's so strange this Collector Series we're gonna talk about doesn't have the thermometer. It's like they just forget to check the box because it has the C.B. moonroof and everything else.
I wish you lived closer to me. I have a 1979 Lincoln Continental Towncar and there are so many options that have quit working that I have tried to fix but can’t figure them out. So I have options that don’t work, and it drives me crazy. I like figuring it out and trying to fix them myself, and I have the shop manuals for it, but some of that stuff is over my head.
Those two cars are gorgeous. I love your taste of cars.I think your Grand Marquis is better than Adams. I like the ideas of all the opyions you added to this car. This car reminds me of a down scale Lincoln that you have. It's the front end of this car, looks like a Lincoln. Can"t wait to see the other one when you post it.
I should let you know when I was young my friends dad was a military officer and owned one of the 3 . In 1977 when I was working in the trash added as a young man of 19 years old at 1 of my stops this guy purchased a brand new one that was black just like this 1 what a gorgeous car I love big cars from the late 60s into the 70s some of the best cars ever made It is my dream to be able to find one of these cars like this that I can enjoy and Drive
I thoroughly enjoyed your video. That has to be one of the sharpest 2dr Grand Marquis sedans left in existence. I applaud your effort to add all options and to keep the factory specs. My favorite part is that you made it a true hardtop by installing hardware to lower the rear passenger windows. That sideview of the car w/windows down brings back memories. We had a '76 2dr. And those windows were fixed. It is a beautiful car and the fact the interior is in such good shape is a testament to both previous and current owners. They appreciate quality and craftsmanship. But i am curious why there is no crimson red pinstripe along beltline of body?
Beautiful car Tony! Love these videos that your doing on your car collection and reapir videos keep them coming !! As for the woodgrain I think it looks real sharp so keep giving your buddy hell for it ! My dad bought my mom a 1979 lincoln continental mark v in 1982 as a wedding gift to her I don't remember the car personally as it was before my time but I've seen pictures they have of it and it was a real sharp looking car also, your grand marquis sort of reminds me of it.
I hear you on options. I like them too. Back in '76, we got an Elite (remember those) for his company car. The one we got was a real oddball option wise. Had a 460 Autotemp AC, tilt, cruise, Luxury Interior, but AM only, no power, not even a rear defrost. I wanted an AM-FM tape installed, along with a rear blower-type defogger (this is Canada, you need something!) and interval wipers. The lying scumbag dealer (aren't they all?) told me flat out that adding the wipers was impossible, even when the accessory brochure showed it as being available. As you say if you have the parts it's a 10 minute job! When they put in the defogger, they didn't even use a factory type switch, just a knob under the dash. Looked very cheesy! One thing that infuriated me about all the Gran Torino based cars (Elite, Cougar, Montego LTD-II, 77-79 T-Bird) was , regardless of trim level ,unless you ordered the Light Group, you got NO Lights at all, not even a glove box light! I was bound and determined to have that light group, so I amassed all the needed items, harnesses etc , and installed them. Some were easy, like the underhood light. I also discovered that the underdash, glove box and trunk lights already had partial wiring. I had to take the dash apart to do the wiper control, light switch and ashtray lights. The hardest one was the dual beam map light,. I had to fish a hot wire thru the headliner for the beam lights, but I did it! (i was 15) I never did get around to installing the lights on warning. Or the Interval wipers. My dad wrecked it when he was drunk! Ran into a pole & was almost totalled . The Ford dealer's body shop did a terrible job fixing it but after the repair was never the same. It was replaced by the just newly introduced Chrysler LeBaron, that car was a POS! At least that one was loaded enough that I didn't have to add anything.
I really like the contrast between the two grains . It’s unique to that era. What I find a little odd is there’s no armrest for the rear seat. I believe my parents 74 Grand Torino Elite had rear armrest. What a great cruiser.
I wonder if you could have someone 3D print the air scoop extension. I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Adam that the fake wood grain looks pretty bad, but the rest of the car looks great. I like options too. It's really cool how you got the back windows to go down, and added cornering lights and intermittent wipers. Thanks for sharing!
Most people who didn't have any love for the 400M was it's being nearly as heavy as the 460 but with significantly less torque and only marginally better fuel economy. Regardless, that is one nice Mercury.
My mom and dad had a 78 grand marquis just like this one. It had the twin comfort red leather. The deep dish aluminum wheels power antenna and gold crest emblems. It was bought new at auffenburg Lincoln Mercury in Belleville Illinois It ended its life at a stop light at lambert airport with a careless Chrysler imperial (around 1992) hit the back end so hard the bumper was in the backseat. It had roughly 46k miles in it when it went to the junkyard
What a beauty! Like everything you did. How did you ever find those rims!? They're my favorite. The tint on the black car DOES look cool! What a driveable dream...
Thank you! It's funny....my dad had one he was gonna sell so I just swapped the rims and tires before he sold it. He sold it to a family friend and then we wound up locating another set to replace them for him.
It's very easy to add. However if you have cruise control you need to find a column that has cruise as well because I believe the horn switch is wired differently.
I had the same car same color with the red leather and corduroy seats and deep dish wheels . Mine was a 1977 with the 460 V8 and quadrasonic 8 track tape player.
I'm starting to love these cars! I'm looking to get involved in the classic car game but I am looking for a inexpensive entry into the game. Are these cars still reasonable in their pricing?
The burly grain is nicer than the straight grain I think, and I don't really get the combination. This exact make, model, year and color is probably the best looking car ever to me. Other than a 460 and a white leather interior I couldn't think of any improvement. That yellow one does look very interesting as well...
In my experience those 400s were actually better from 0 to 30 and in light throttle response around town,, they always felt peppier than the 460 under those particular circumstances... To me... Of course when you punch it above 60 the 400 doesn't have much left and the 460 takes off..
I'm with you on the woodgrain in the dash; it's not that big a deal to me. However, I do hate how they started using the "engine" idiot light. Finance guys. Ugh. 😄 In Moparland, rear quarter windows were fixed on the big coupes of the same era if you got a vinyl top that stretched down over them to create opera windows. Otherwise, they retracted. As a consequence, I've heard of people making the opera windows retractable by swapping similar hardware.
A time capsule. Never knew Media velour was available on anything other than the marks. It always bugged me when ford fixed the rear 1/4 windows on coupes, Ltd, elite, Ltd II, cougar, Marquis. Perhaps they figured with a/c, windows weren’t opened much, however they did market the cool power minivent on full size 4 doors and Lincoln.
Bought 78 GRAND MARQUIS Coupe loaded DARK green with matching two tone green leather and 460. Had been owned by friends who stored it for several years. Carburetor was problematic. At that time only option was $500 HOLLY. But my mechanic refitted Ford truck Carburetor. Loved that car. Unfortunately financial issues forced sale. Made a nice profit but wish I could have kept it. Finances fortunately have improved. Have subsequently had several GRAND MARQUIS and TOWN CARS. Currently have beautiful low mileage Town Car Signature Limited and will never let it go! Recent article called last TOWN CARS the American ROLLS-ROYCE. 👍 So sad to see what is now considered a luxury vehicle, even from FMC. 🤮 🤮 🤮
I think any kind of wood grain looks better on a dashboard , The car would not look as nice if it had no wood grain, it would look cheap, especially on a premium car like that, that woodgrain looks absolutely fine with the car, I guess Just about never met a wood dashboard that I did not like
I perfer the burl woodgrain pattern too. I think it improves the look and gives it some depth. Hey, it wouldnt be the 70s if it didnt have a ton of woodgrain!
I need to replace bulbs in the dash as well as the windshield wiper switch. No clue how to pull the dash out. Also, where did you get your parts, I'm having trouble finding a good source@@tonyscarcare5657
@@tonyscarcare5657 I've replied but don't think it was posted. I need to remove the dash to replace the bulbs and windshield wiper switch. Do you know how it comes out? Do you have a goto supplier for parts?
Sure, I know how to do it. I guess I need to do a video on it. As far as getting parts. If they aren't available at the parts store, you simply have to rely on Ebay and parts cars or junkyards. I've been fortunate enough to always find what I need.
I'm thinking about trading for one must have 69,000 me on it's a pretty clean car got the 400 in it are they reliable how's that big pretty much daily driving it
I've never had a problem with the 400 engine other than they do need a timing chain and gears between 80-100k miles. I have not replaced this one, but it went out on my 79 Lincoln at 80k. It's those junk nylon gears. They are really otherwise a great engine. People around here love building them for dirt track racing.
I love these cars but can't stand the gas mileage, I wanna daily drive it. Would be cool to see a 4.6 swap or a smaller diesel of a sorts for fuel economy so these beauty's can be enjoyed every day like they once were

Love the big Mercs. Had quite a few in my family when I was young. Best one was Dad's 73 Grand Marquis coupe in gold with a 460 police interceptor.
I had a 73 myself years ago.
beautiful car tony, my coworker has one of these, hopefully i can get one these in the future
Thank you! They are out there. You just don't see a lot of 2-doors.
She's a beauty for sure. I've got an '07 myself. 👍
Thank you!
Thank you! There are several on Facebook Market Place right now.
Thank you! The Grand Marquis only got stripes on the hood and trunk unless it had the two-tone option.
Love the wood grain. They had elegant plastic trees back then lol
Lol that's so true!
Love this car. Love the tint on it too.
Thank you! I'll have it 29 years come September 2nd.
Omg that is so cool you added the resr power windows. I was watching another video of yours snd thought, "Four power window controls on a coupe?"
Oh, lol. Yeah, I just replied to that comment with a link to this one. I like options!
Love the grand marquis my favorite car and beautiful Lincoln
Wow… what a pretty car. Very nice
Thank you!
Really nice car. Love the window mods
Thank you very much!
Very good looking car keep it in good shape
Thank you! I've had it over 29 years now. I've definitely kept it up.
Wood grain looks perfect- Just like the Lincoln 89 singure series Lincoln they have wood grain looks perfectly
It’s a beautiful car, so classy looking! It’s a big car but it wears its size well
Wow thats awesome you did a great job with the back windows you went through a lot of trouble for that but well worth it
Thank you! I'll have another video of this car coming up because I will have had it 29 years on September 2nd.
@@tonyscarcare5657 I look forward to your next video
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you!
The lying scumbag dealer
(aren't they all?) told me flat out that adding the wipers was impossible, even when the accessory brochure showed it as being available. As you say if you have the parts it's a 10 minute job!
When they put in the defogger, they didn't even use a factory type switch, just a knob under the dash.
Looked very cheesy!
One thing that infuriated me about all the Gran Torino based cars
(Elite, Cougar, Montego LTD-II, 77-79 T-Bird) was , regardless of trim level ,unless you ordered the Light Group, you got NO Lights at all, not even a glove box light! I was bound and determined to have that light group, so I amassed all the needed items, harnesses etc , and installed them.
Some were easy, like the underhood light. I also discovered that the underdash, glove box and trunk lights
already had partial wiring.
That was a strangely optioned car.
Man listen to the way those doors shut perfect striker alignment
Ford always had nice closing doors even on their pickup trucks I have a 82 F100 those doors close and latch the nicest of any vehicle I've ever had
@@brandonbarnett8105 yeah you had to slam the doors shut on GM and Chrysler vehicles!
Love Adam but love the wood!
Lol me too.
I really like the contrast between the two grains . It’s unique to that era. What I find a little odd is there’s no armrest for the rear seat. I believe my parents 74 Grand Torino Elite had rear armrest. What a great cruiser.
Yes they did eliminate the rear armrests over the years.
Thank you!
Even the hubcaps were high speed balanced 😎🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
Most people who didn't have any love for the 400M was it's being nearly as heavy as the 460 but with significantly less torque and only marginally better fuel economy. Regardless, that is one nice Mercury.
Thank you. Yeah I'd never let the 400 stand between me buying a nice Marquis or LTD.
Thanks Tony, great story about your Dad at the end of video, hey are you farming there at all? I keep waiting for you say something about that....
Thank you! No, I do not own any of the farm ground.
That is absolutely awful! I'm not far from Belleville. In fact I'll be in O'Fallon tomorrow.
Super cool car!
Thank you very much! I've been enjoying it for almost 29 years.
Hi Tony, I wonder how do you clean your cars? With water or a soft brush? I really like your Mercury. Nice buy Tony.
I try my best to never have to get them wet. Sometimes, it happens, but I usually just try to keep them wiped down and waxed. Thank you.
Love everything about that Beauty
Thank you!
@@tonyscarcare5657 Makes sense. Those rims are never for sale anywhere! btw, I like the burled walnut trim. I have it in my '69 Marquis!
@@rwg520 yeah I like most everything about that car.
I have a 1978 Grand Marquis that does not have tilt wheel...can that be added? Is it difficult to do? Thank you & your car is awesome!
Oh yes 77 was the only year they offered that seat covering option.
Nice ride.
Thank you very much!
What mufflers are you using? I like the tone
Thank you! They are glass packs. Been on there since probably 1997.
I'm starting to love these cars! I'm looking to get involved in the classic car game but I am looking for a inexpensive entry into the game. Are these cars still reasonable in their pricing?
They're out there. Just keep watching Market Place.
The burly grain is nicer than the straight grain I think, and I don't really get the combination.
This exact make, model, year and color is probably the best looking car ever to me. Other than a 460 and a white leather interior I couldn't think of any improvement.
That yellow one does look very interesting as well...
That's a Cream and Gold Edition with a moonroof but really wasn't very well taken care of.
Well I'm sure it will still be interesting.
sweet old ride
Thank you! I've been enjoying it going on 30 years now.
My 1978 grand marquis has a transmission tail shaft seal that is leaking. Easy to do? Cost for mechanic to do? Thanks
That should be very simple and inexpensive.
Gorgeous. Do you still have it
Bookem Dano
Of course. I don't plan on ever selling it. Going on 30 years of ownership.
In my experience those 400s were actually better from 0 to 30 and in light throttle response around town,, they always felt peppier than the 460 under those particular circumstances...
To me...
Of course when you punch it above 60 the 400 doesn't have much left and the 460 takes off..
Yep the car was so nice I simply wasn't gonna let the 400 stand in my way.
Yeah, I'm planning to do a video on the minivent windows sometime in the future. Thank you for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
I had one with that two-tone green exterior and interior as well. It was awesome.
COOL CAR!!! ..LOOKS LIKE A MAFIA CAR!!! A CAR LIKE THAT WUD...B USED IN A DRIVE BY..OUT IN L.A.!!!
Lol
super....
Thank you!
I think any kind of wood grain looks better on a dashboard , The car would not look as nice if it had no wood grain, it would look cheap, especially on a premium car like that, that woodgrain looks absolutely fine with the car, I guess Just about never met a wood dashboard that I did not like
Thank you, I agree!
I perfer the burl woodgrain pattern too. I think it improves the look and gives it some depth. Hey, it wouldnt be the 70s if it didnt have a ton of woodgrain!
For sure!
that looks like my childhood car but me and dads way a 77
The 400 was a decent engine but it was down on power compared to the 460. It was a product of its time.
Does anyone know where i could find a power brake booster for my 1976 Mercury Grand Marquis ? Everywhere i look its unavailable.
Probably better off to find a place that rebuilds them.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
I kinda like the burled look. But is it real wood or is it plastic pretending to be wood like modern junk?
It's a 78 Mercury......of course it's plastic!
Would you ever sell this car?
I don't believe so.
@@tonyscarcare5657 I wouldn’t either
@@tonyscarcare5657 I’d rather a car like this over a mustang, dodge or Chevy
Me, too!
Bery nice hard to find 2doors
Thank you!
Awesome car😂
Thank you!
Need new illuminated entry door LED lights for my
79 Heritage, mine burned out.
They are built into the assembly, so you'll need to find a new lock set, including the ignition lock cylinder.
I would be daily driving the 78 if I traded for it I know it's a big car is it hard to find a parking space
I just bought a 78 Mercury Marquis Brougham and would love to pick your brain.
What's on your mind?
I have to pull the dashboard to replace bulbs as well as wiper switch. No clue where to begin.@@tonyscarcare5657
@@tonyscarcare5657 I'm going to look at it tomorrow if it runs out good I'm most likely going to trade for it I'm going daily drive it
They're great cars.
I love these cars but can't stand the gas mileage, I wanna daily drive it. Would be cool to see a 4.6 swap or a smaller diesel of a sorts for fuel economy so these beauty's can be enjoyed every day like they once were
Agreed!
Needs a straight up timing chain set and a four barrel
My dad put a four barrel and aluminum intake on his and it hauled ass!
