- Hey there, and welcome back to the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” UA-cam channel! My name is Adrian Clements, and today in video #22 we’re going to have a close look at a beautiful 1972 Mercury Marquis Brougham 4-door pillared hardtop that has only been driven 3,315 miles in the last 51 years - that’s an average of exactly 65 miles per year! We’ll see photos of the car with detailed explanations, we’ll review some 1972 Mercury press photos and sales catalog information, and we’ll see some relevant period FoMoCo literature. Finally, we’ll go through a complete decode of the car’s Vehicle Identification Number (or VIN) and production data. Adam was quicker to the dance, he bought his vehicles before the prices spiked up, if he started trying to purchase the Mercury’s that he has today he would be paying double, he is probably actually responsible for the prices going up because he has brought attention to these vehicles, He has shined the lights on them, therefore, in part generating more interest in these cars, could be A victim of a his own success?
@@david-wilkerson1967 I totally agree on all points. Adam has been at the fore of the value curves of these cars. I had initially ended my comment with “if it were half the price”, however I dropped it.

I was recently trying to explain to a young coworker of mine how at one time you could order a car with a variety of engines, body colors, interior colors, and materials and he was quite amazed. This would be a great video for him to see how it was instead of every car being silver with a gray interior.
What's the backstory on who and why this beauty was put away not driven?
I personally can't even concieve of ever doing such a thing.
@Johnnycdrums, unfortunately I don't have the back story as to WHY this car only was driven 3,315 miles in its lifetime. I emailed the sellers last night after I posted the video to advise them that I had made a video about the car they're selling, so perhaps I'll get the scoop on the low miles when I hear back from them. These types of cars typically have a tragic element to their low miles, such as the original owner dying a couple of months after purchase and the spouse leaving the car to sit in a garage for decades afterwards.

Great info on these cars, thank you Adrian! Always loved the 71/72 Marquis. It surprises me to read the engine ratings of the 429 and the 460 for 1972. The 460 made 8 hp less, but only 4 lb-ft of torque more, each at the same rpm. O_O
This was one car. They got cheaper as the years went on more vanilla in style as the years went on this car is gorgeous. What a stand out automobile.
That was thorough and educational, I truly enjoyed it. I started driving in the 1979-1980 years and cars like these were everywhere and somewhat affordable. My first 4 cars were Mercury products, 1974 Capri, 1971 Montego MX brougham a 1968 Cougar XR 7 and a 1970 Montego MX brougham with the hideaway headlights. I absolutely regret selling the XR 7 and the 1970 MX, both turned out to be valuable collector cars. They all were 2 doors. I have owned many other Mercury products in my 60 years, I always thought they were great quality vehicles but never as nice as what you showed in this video, outstanding. Thanks

What a find! For anyone owning a Ford or Lincoln of that era, be sure to check the park pawl in the automatic transmission; these vehicles are known, when idling in park, to jump into reverse. With no one behind the wheel, needless to say, this leads to disaster. I've experienced it with both my '70 Mark III and my '71 Marquis..
@brianthompson6561, that is good advice, and why I ALWAYS use my parking brake with my old cars. I had a friend with a 1967 Ford Galaxie 500 2-door hardtop with the Z-code 390-4V 315 hp V-8 engine and C6 SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic that jumped into reverse when idling in the garage on high idle. It hit his house a couple of feet beside where his Dad was sitting in a lawn chair - yikes!

My grandfather had one of these. He bought new in 1973. Being a complete redesign. Same package as this one. Only it was a 2 door. It was an absolute joy to ride in. Very quiet & smooth ride.
I'm curious how a 51 year old car only has 3300 miles on it. What was the history that caused such low mileage?
@mickeydogtubemickeydogtube6856, I don't yet know the story behind WHY this car only has 3,315 on it. Typically in cases like this the original owner died when the car was three months old and the spouse left the car in the garage for decades.

We had the 73 colony park wagon 429. Loved that car
That car is in amazing condition! Wow. It brings back some memories too. I remember my aunt having a '72 Marquis Brougham 2-door in that same color scheme when I was a little kid. It might have only been 2 or 3 years old at the time. I mainly remember not being allowed to wear my shoes in it. ha ha. Then again, I couldn't wear them in her house either. She was the dictionary definition of 'neat freak'. i wouldn't mind taking this one for a nice ride, and I might even take off my shoes. Thanks for sharing this.
Fantastic car! So many of these older, long-hidden-away, heirloom cars are recently coming up for sale, even whole, priceless collections. Any clues as to why?
The truth? Owners of this era car are passing away I'm 67 and have a 70 XR7 convertible and I'm not getting any younger :)

My mother had a '72 Marquis Brougham 4 door. Not sure if it was hardtop or not (I was 8). I do know now that it was medium green, with a medium green interior, and dark green vinyl top. My brother totaled it in '75 when an elderly lady made a right hand turn from the left lane (four lane road) directly in front of him. 😢

That's interesting about the speaker grilles in the front doors! My Mom had a 4dr hardtop with the AM radio and rear seat speakers, but not those grilles! We put a am-fm tape in it for her, and when we took the door panels off, the cutouts were marked in the particle board. Performance wise, I remember Consumer Reports did a review and they got 0-60 in 11 seconds. and the 1/4 mile times of 18 seconds @ 80MPH. Gas mileage on the highway was usually around 12.5 MPG, when the speed limit was 55 MPH. She didn't have the cruise control or the appearance pkg (but had the front bumper guards), but did have the twin lounge seats with power driver's side, a tilt wheel, color matching belts, and a power trunk release! The 460 was real, a friend's parents had a brown coupe with all the bells and whistles, including the 460.
Cool. So much for the myth that big V-8s get good mileage on the highway. Maybe back then 12.5 mpg was good !!
@joesmithjoesmith4284, perhaps the standardisation to one style of Marquis Brougham door panel with the speaker grille is one of the Trim Variations that this interior underwent through the 1972 model year?

That power window panel looks strange without a mirror control. In fact, until now, I thought any power window car included the remote mirror, but a quick check of the 1972 Mercury brochure shows it as optional. I thought it would have been more cost effective to include it. That means they had at least 4 different ones, windows w/manual mirror, windows w/remote mirror, windows-locks with manual mirror, and windows-locks with remote mirror. Also, are you sure about the default inclusion of the door grill regardless of radio choice? Adam has a low-option '71 Marquis Brougham with AM and his doesn't have them. Yet it seems unlikely , given the low mileage, that the car was molested in any way. Maybe a factory mistake?
Also, according to that sales bulletin, the 460 gave 8 fewer HP vs the 429 and 4 more foot-pounds of torque.
Why did they even bother? It's been my contention for years that slower than expected Lincoln sales that year left them with a surplus of 460s , with the AC (GM compressor) already bolted on, hence the required AC stipulation.
They sure put out some beautiful 70's Mercury's and Lincoln's at the Sign of the Cat.
Truely enormous car.
My own classic boat is 10ft from the drivers head to the end of the front bumper.
This one seems to be every bit as long.

i know where a 66 fairlane is with only 10,000 miles on it.still has the paper-plastic cover over the back seat
The last full sized Mercury that I loved the styling of. The 1973-1978 looked like a box on wheels. The 1979 on up looks too much like a Ford.
Wow I’m 68 years old my family and I have been a lot of miles in one of these cars almost like this one nothing today rides like this car
My first car was a 1972 Mercury Monterey. It looked a lot like this one just not as fancy. I bought it in 1979 in Waynesville MO for $275. I think mine had the 400 engine.
Well I don't think there could be a better representation for this car. Made me think of people back in the day that drove a little bit later model year Mercury. But it was nice to think of those people and this is a fantastic car.

@@adrianclements8916 MERRY CHRISTMAS. I told a business associate Merry Christmas and instantly turn back and said happy Hanukkah. I said I don't know what Christmas means if anything in your religion. He said we don't really celebrate Christmas as such but it is a secular holiday that we enjoy. Now that's an insight that I've never had. I found it quite interesting. Maybe you will too.
My ex forced me in 1992 to sell my 1978 Grand Marquis 2-door. It had only 24,000 mi, 460 fully loaded. Was bought at Don Stone Lincoln/ Mercury in Peoria, Illinois March 10, 1978. Would love to find it today, I can prove it was mine.
@terrykeithley6183, I'm sorry that your 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis had to be sold. If you're serious about locating it, I recommend that you first contact Marti Auto Works and pay them to find the VIN in the Ford electronic production records database that they are licensed to use, and once you have the VIN you can do a post on the "Lost Muscle Cars" Facebook group and maybe one of the 87,000 members will be able to help.

In Michigan with all the salt used on the snowy & icy roads in the winter, these among other cars lines disintegrated in less than 3 years. Even rustproofing didn't help much. What a shame.
I’m sure a major clean-up, restoration was done on this car in order for it to be presented in this condition.
@mrknotthall, clean-up perhaps, but this car has not been restored. It is being marketed as a 3,315-original-mile survivor.

You have a great informative channel about Ford and Mercury automobiles. I have a question ,Do you have any way to find out how many 1976 Mercury Cougar XR7s were produced in triple black with bucket seats and a console? I ordered one in 76 very late production possibly one of the last ones made but only kept the cat for 2 years and have regretted selling it but the girl offered me very good money for it couldn't pass it up. It was the only one I ever saw most of the ones had red interior. I've been looking for one for quite a few years and have not found one, that's why I'm asking the question if you know how many that were made thanks

I recommend that you contact Marti Auto Works - www.martiauto.com - and pay them to run your research request. They can tell you EXACTLY how my triple black 1976 Mercury Cougar XR-7s were produced with bucket seats and a console using Ford's electronic production records database that they are licensed by Ford to analyse.

All the Fords during this time had that vacuum tank (I assume) that looked exactly like a coffee can (the way most coffee was packaged then). I always wondered why they didn’t try to make it less coffee-can-like. Just one of those things I remember as a nine year old.
The "coffee can" is a vacuum storage tank for the air conditioning and other vacuum operated stuff.
I have a 1976 Chevrolet with only 3,800 miles on it. It was signed on the rear bumper for Frank. Buy some Factory workers who built it for a specific guy. The last of the full size body Chevrolets. I guess I got a bargain on it in 2007 for only $14,500. I'm holding on to it so I can trade it for a house. It's 1,400,500, why do people buy yellow or light blue cars and drive them only 3,000 miles and then quit driving them. Why couldn't they have bought red ones or maroon ones instead. So that a beautiful Ruby would be in a classic car museum in the future instead of yellow or brown. I have a yellow Cadillac with only $19,000 miles on it that someone bought and only drove 9,000 Mi and then decided they didn't want to drive it anymore for the next 30 Years.
If you actually believe someone is going to offer nearly $1.5 million for a half-century old full-sized Chevy land barge, you're DELUDED, sir.

@kc0lif, admittedly the term "4-door pillared hardtop" instead of "4-door sedan" is a bit of Marketing magic, but that's the term that Mercury choose to use to describe this car. I ALWAYS follow the manufacturer's terminology in my videos.

In other words, a restoration could justify the request, but in this case, as you say, it was not necessary.

I wonder why the insistence Vin calling the car a four door pillared hardtop when in the photos it is clearly a no B pillar four door hardtop vehicle . Of course these car types were highly desirable in the 60- mid late 70s we ith multiple models of the genre being built by FMC and GM and Chrysler.

What an opulent car! The 1972 price of $5,758 adjusted for inflation is $44,000 today. Do you suppose you could buy a car like this for $44,000 today? I sure can't think of one. What would such a car cost today (assuming you could buy such a car today)?

This is a typicaal example of an American land barge.
.Acres of wasted sheet metal in the front, uneconomical and suspension made from Jello.
If it was that good why didn't it outsell the competition? It is not even what you would call a pleasant design and as expected it is a rust trap, hence very few are in roadworthy condition.
It is ostentatious ,a poor design and not worthy of cult or classic car status.

My parents had a 1972 Marquis Brougham, VIN 2Z62N647800. I believe it was Green Gold Metallic. I keep saying I am going to order the Marti Report, but I keep forgetting.
We also had a 1972 Marquis Brougham in Green Gold Metallic with a white top. It had the cloth bench seats and my dad said he wished it had the Comfort Lounge seats, instead. We bought it in 1973 and my dad said the story was that it was a trade-in by a man who ordered a new car every year. In 1977, we got sideswiped by a dump truck on a 2-lane highway that tried to turn when we were passing it. The car was (just barely) totaled and my dad had it put back together. In 1981, the engine self-destructed (not sure what happened) and my dad got another 429 from an LTD in a junkyard. I learned how to drive on that car and got my driving license in it. We had it until 1991. By then, the car was done. The power windows didn't roll all the way up, the power (vacuum) door locks didn't work (they were damaged in the accident in 1977 and never repaired correctly). The horn did not work. The power bench seat only moved the driver's side and stressed the metal on the passenger side with the flexing. The cruise control would disconnect the throttle. One of the cylinders was done, as well I still begged my dad to sell it to me, but he wouldn't. Said it was time to let it go. We got as much use out of as we possibly could. I miss it a lot.

@@adrianclements8916 Hi Adrian. I will look through some old photos and see what I can find. I found the State of Arkansas registration receipt, which had the VIN. If I’m not mistaken, it was purchased at Littrell Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in Blytheville, AR. My father was stationed at the now-closed Blytheville AFB. That car went to two stops in Illinois, followed by a boat ride to and from Hawaii. Its final stop with us is when it was traded in on a new Subaru in 1981 in Universal City, TX.
