I'm amazed the Alien from Alien:Isolation wasn't on here. The sheer unpredictability of it and how it can even find you in places you're supposed to be safe, like lockers, makes it the most terrifying enemy of any game I've ever played.
I agree with you and also how smart the AI for the xeno was, it really made you feel hunted sometimes. Once it knew the exact spot where to find me cause I fell and made noise on the spot. The alien wasnt even around, just guided itself through the noise. Another time it was able to detect me while I was crouched with a wall between us cause he saw the smoke from my molotov through the window.
Another really creepy enemy is Laura (aka Spider Lady) from Evil Within. Man that first encounter where she just spawns from a pool of blood screaming Is so terrifying!
The Witch from Left 4 Dead immediately came into my mind. Not only its creepy in how she weeps on the ground, but also the most difficult enemy in the game. Another one is from more recent game, Bramble, in that particularly "The Rake Lady", when her face pops on the screen, its guaranteed shivers.
Well worse than the baby is the manequins who follow you in the same building during the DLC expansion Shadows of Rose. Heck the baby is creepy, the manequins are even more unsettling...
I think the regenerators from RE4 remake definitely deserve a spot on this list, i mean, the sound design and the way they crawl around when your shoot their legs off...

One of the main reasons it's so damn freaky is the noises they use. We're hard wired to be put on edge when we hear a baby crying. That pitch and the scream that it makes also produces a different kind of fear between men and women too. It actually puts men into an angry, on edge fighting mode cause back in the day if a baby screamed like that it could attract predators so we get a huge adrenaline release, and with women it makes them think something is wrong with the offspring so they want to rush to it's aid. It a real effective scare cause it goes so deep into our psyche.
The ReDeads in Ocarina of Time (or Legend of Zelda in general) used to freak me out. Slowly walking towards you, ever closer, unrelenting like a slasher film. Freezing you in place, low moans signaling their horrifying presence. As Falcon would put it, pants completely off, the Hell completely out of me.
The ReDeads and the hand at the bottom of the well were my first nightmare fuel creatures. I had to have my big brother play through the redead part the first time lol
For me it was the hand thing in the Kokori Sage Temple. Not the creepiest monster in thr game by itself, but man the dread I had going through that room and watching out for that growing Shadows on the floor which was the only indication it was about to grab you. 😨😨 Simple monster but verrry effective for kid me.
Winter Lantern and madman from the the chalice dungeons in Bloodborne are some of the most unsettling enemies I ever fought in games. One sings in a very unbalanced tone until they spot you, while the other screams in terror as they sprint towards you from across the map
yes. the evil within 1 is one of the scariest games i've ever played. i'd put it 3rd behind alien isolation and subnautica for me. I had a nightmare about the sister from The evil within and she freaks me out so much i drew her from memory

I love horror but don't like jump scares so The Evil Within felt perfect for me. Monster and world design in those games was so good.

Then she appears for the first time and i believe it was the first time a game scared me so bad i had to sit the controller down and walk away for a bit xD The rest of the game until her final fight i was always paranoid and terrified of her. The stress was just too much and i just wanted her to be gone forever lol... If i had to pick one thing that freaks me out more than anything it'd be between her and some of the big monsters from subnautica... I just can't handle the ocean and scary stuff in the water ToT

The Rat King blew me away. I recently finished my 2nd playthrough of TLOU2, and I don't mind admitting I had to take a break before I went into that fight. It's not difficult, it's just so uneasy and disturbing -- the strobing lights, and sound design make it one of the moments I'll never forget from this title. Honorable mention to regular stalkers. Absolutely creepy.
The head parasites when you first encounter them made me freak out and turn my console off because I someone missed the part where they were introduced in a cutscene
The "Mia Mannequins" from the Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose DLC is also worth a mention. They take the whole "Weeping Angels" thing to the next level.
The clickers are mild compared to the shamblers. Also, the area in which you fight the rat king wasn’t touched since outbreak day (according to Nora), which is why the WLF hadn’t searched it yet when Abby went in. Something very disturbing was to be expected. btw I love Abby’s line when you use the flamethrower on the rat king. “Yeah! You like that?”

Fought one the other day and man, it had this creepy animation I’ve never seen before where it turned its head instantly on me while cracking its neck turning their head. I wanted to sneak up on it and it noticed me so fast and started chasing me, I never felt more freight in a game 😂
I was sure it would be on the list. I remember playing the original and I knew these were coming. Not as scary now now that I have an infinite launcher, the Chicago (typewriter) Sweeper and the Hand Canon.
The rat king in Last of Us 2 creeps me out every time I play the game. Just something about an amalgamation of all these infected creating a monstrosity was absolutely horrifying. Genuinely a hard moment to play because of how scary it is.

Nah number 1 sits perfectly up there. I remember I was already a bit freaked out because of how dark that section was. Only for me to hear that low rumble and then that shit shot out of the dark. I literally screamed, paused the game and had to wait about 5 minutes before I unpaused it. Then when I lost it the first time, I came across the room that had that bed in it and I remember saying to myself "Those bastards are gonna make me hide under this bed arent they" My heart was literally beating out of my ass lmao. Then it shot the door open and I literally screamed like Minnie Mouse and I flew the hell outta there. But then the game got at its PETTIEST! Yall know the part! Waiting for that damn elevator to open! Maaaaaaaaaaaaan if I could have I would have shoved myself through those steel bar doors. I was panicking so much that I forgot to run away from it bro! I dont even know if I was ever screaming that much at a video game but I can tell you i was screaming the entire time. i didnt know what to do lmao. When that door finally opened I rushed my ass inside and I mashed the X button (I was on PS4) about 30 thousand times to close that door. Bro, TO HELL with that baby.
lmao All my friends and I had similar reactions during our playthroughs. I didn't realize how much it actually got to me till I had to revisit that area in the DLC. And soon as I got there I had an immense dread just come over me as I remembered what happened the last time I was there.

Bruh, the first time I encountered a Centaur in Fallout 3, I nearly had a heart attack and reflexively turned my game off. It was the mission where you have to find blood packets in a creepy, abandoned hospital, and one jump scare/surprise attacks you.
I feel like The Dahaka from Prince of Persia should be somewhere up in that list. Back when i was a kid, I always got creeped out during those small chases and the boss fight was a big nope for me. Even after 13 years now, I still get scared of that boss :p
The baby definitely creeped me out in Resident Evil Village, but one enemy that got me more than the baby were the cyborg things from the factory. Man, they still creeps the hell out of me
The Rats in souls games are very easy to underestimate. Most games make rats the easy enemy, so I see rats I think I can handle that no problem, then I die... from rats.
Jeff from Half-Life: Alyx deserves my honorary mention. 1st playthrough I was literally hiding from him in the corner, on my knees holding my breath 😅 I don't like playing horror games and in VR it's a totally different experience.
I feel like The Suffering gets left out a lot because it's underappreciated and overlooked. The whole game has you on edge from constant noises from the manifestations of executions. Or Dante's Inferno has some nasty monsters too
@@kamele0n946 Yes, they are Mainliners. It took me a couple play throughs to realize in the shower area that you need to shut off the water to keep them from spawning. Usually I just ran through as I get needled.
Glad you mentioned it. I wish someone would remake the 1st one. The creepy psychiatric, the sisters, you never felt safe from start to end. It was a hell of a game!
I think for me as far as creepiness goes it will always be The Evil Within 1 and 2. Always tough to get through the game because damn do I feel alone and empty in those worlds. Anxiety goes through the roof and the creepy enemies . Good times.
The most recent creatures for me that I can think of which gave me a creepy feeling is either, the bugs from Grounded or the leviathans from Subnautica.

Bro how did you not include the Regenerators from RE4!?!?!? Those are BY FAR some of the creepiest looking enemies in ANY game. Especially with their ability to slither along the ground and come after you if you blow off all their limbs.
I don't know if this would count as a terrifying enemy encounter (probably not), in Dead Space the sudden transmission from either Hammond or Daniels would always make me jump out of my skin. Especially after a tense fight/run for your life moment. Also, in Dead Space 2, those raptor sounding Necromorphs. Those things were terrifying. Not especially difficult, but the way they stayed hidden and made those sounds was unsettling. Especially when one starts screeching on your left and a second one rams you from the right.
It’s wicked old but Parasite Eve on the original PlayStation was full of creepy moments and I loved that game with early weapon mods etc. Great for second play through getting to keep weapons and stuff. Miss that game!

Mr. X was a genius design in horror! Also, the baby had to be number 1 on this list. My first time seeing it, I said 'nope' and uninstalled it. I eventually had courage to beat the game.
Mr X got everyone planning their route like Tony Stark discovering a new element, truly one of the worst possible things to happen in videogames is enemies entering safe zones meaning they have nothing "Safe" that and also running out of bullets and heals in the end of the police department part, having a giant dude just running after you and 5 dogs just materializing in your face has scarred me for life.
Night Time on Dying Light 1 is the Scariest thing I have ever played in a game. The way it makes you play so stealthily on a night or you just hide in a safe zone or run like crazy to safety is perfection. I've never seen a game that was actually trying to be scary succeed in being scary because the gimmicks they use are boring. I also think a lot of players when they bought the game had no idea it would be that terrifying.

The first time I ran into a lechen in the Witcher 3 really spooked me. I was riding through the forest on Roach when it stepped out from behind a tree. Needless to say, I was mashing the hell out of the button to get Roach to run like hell.
The first enemy in a game I can remember being scared by was the shark in Banjo Kazooie. For those that remember, you get into the second level called Pirate Cove and immediately you see a collectable jinjo right under the dock you spawn in. You jump into the water and out of nowhere a shark materializes and you hear this shark themed danger music playing and you panic to get out of the water. Also, Clanker from the same game scared me so bad the first time I saw him.

Thief (2014) - Trying to creep around the abandoned/haunted insane asylum with unkillable undead inmates and lights that start to flicker as they scream and chase you.
Great list, scariest to me are pretty much anything from the Outlast series. Marta and the priest from 2 are spooky, but Eddie Gluskin from the dlc Whistleblower can go to hell.
ME3 multiplayer desensitized me to Banshees. Fought so many of them that they were trivial compared to the 1-shot snipers and ninjas Cerberus maps would have.
I always found Jin Yoshida in SOMA exceptionally creepy and scary, especially since you have to avoid him/it in cramped spaces, and can't defend yourself. And those sounds.... 😅😅

I would have put the Regenerador instead of DR Salvador for RE4 Remake Those fuckers now not only are nearly immortal but they also run at sonic speed levels on higher difficulties, it takes you by surprise really hard because they don't look fast at all and the old Regenerador's were super slow

You should’ve included the horrific babies from Dead Space 2. They scared the crap out of me more than any other enemy in the franchise. And the poor Headcrap zombies from the Half Life games. Their cries are also horrifying and heartbreaking at the same time, because they are not dying but used by the headcrabs. Also those weird floating corpses from Silent Hill 4. I have no idea why they freaked me out so much.
The big daddies always scared the living SHIT out of me. I couldn’t play the game as a kid and had to beat it in my 20’s. The deep bass noise you hear when getting close fucked me up
That friggin Blob Fetus from Resident Evil 8, House Bienevento is unsettling enough with those damn creepy dolls, but getting chased in the pitch black from that motherf#$%ing Fetus.. I had NEVER been as freaked out from a game as the first time I encountered that, it still gives me the chills.
In the novelization of Metro 2032 the librarians actually do speak and mimic the humans who enter the library. One even jams it's hand/arm in through the back of one sad soul and hides behind his body while using his hand like a puppet, speaking through the dying man. Creepy as hell
Just recently played RE Village for the first time a couple weeks ago and just getting to House Beneviento was so creepy, it definitely was the creepy horror section of the game where everything else was the typical RE horror. I will say though, I think the mannequins from the Shadows of Rose DLC was creepier than the baby.
For me The witch from the left for dead series really gets me even now .. Just by hearing her cry gives me chills 😅 that's why I don't play it in single player.. ahhh Miss those days..😊😊😊

You do know what's funny about those Caria Manor: Hands? In Miyazaki original concept art, those were supposed to be actual SPIDERS, but someone in the team said to change that to appeal to bigger audience and NOT to cause arachnophobia in people, so Miyazaki changed it to those creepy hands. To be fair, I would rather have spiders now lol (same ones as in Demon's Souls or like Rom from Bloodborne would be cool :D).
I did an entire playthrough of Rdr2 and never found the night people. Unlike my 1st playthrough where I was attacked several times. freaky enemies for sure

The rat king in Last of Us 2 creeps me out every time I play the game. Just something about an amalgamation of all these infected creating a monstrosity was absolutely horrifying. Genuinely a hard moment to play because of how scary it is.
i had to turn accessability options on in that bit - so i could actually work out where i was running to in the basement!
No sh*t.... When I knew it was coming up cus I'd read about it before playing it, I lived with my grandma at the time and had to get her to come sit in the room with me while I fought it 😂😅
The whole setup to that fight was scary, especially the name of the place: ground zero
As a kid the Berserker from Gears of War terrified me; the unnatural grunt it makes still sends chills down my spine to this day

I actually never finished Gears 1 because of the Beserker and his one hit kills …. Having to time the dodges on specific doorways not once but twice!!! Shite I just got super frustrated and never touched that game again!!

Nah number 1 sits perfectly up there. I remember I was already a bit freaked out because of how dark that section was. Only for me to hear that low rumble and then that shit shot out of the dark. I literally screamed, paused the game and had to wait about 5 minutes before I unpaused it. Then when I lost it the first time, I came across the room that had that bed in it and I remember saying to myself "Those bastards are gonna make me hide under this bed arent they" My heart was literally beating out of my ass lmao. Then it shot the door open and I literally screamed like Minnie Mouse and I flew the hell outta there.
But then the game got at its PETTIEST! Yall know the part! Waiting for that damn elevator to open! Maaaaaaaaaaaaan if I could have I would have shoved myself through those steel bar doors. I was panicking so much that I forgot to run away from it bro! I dont even know if I was ever screaming that much at a video game but I can tell you i was screaming the entire time. i didnt know what to do lmao. When that door finally opened I rushed my ass inside and I mashed the X button (I was on PS4) about 30 thousand times to close that door. Bro, TO HELL with that baby.
lmao All my friends and I had similar reactions during our playthroughs. I didn't realize how much it actually got to me till I had to revisit that area in the DLC. And soon as I got there I had an immense dread just come over me as I remembered what happened the last time I was there.

Bruh, the first time I encountered a Centaur in Fallout 3, I nearly had a heart attack and reflexively turned my game off. It was the mission where you have to find blood packets in a creepy, abandoned hospital, and one jump scare/surprise attacks you.
I was hoping that freaky goshdarn thing was recognized,kinda disappointed
I feel like The Dahaka from Prince of Persia should be somewhere up in that list. Back when i was a kid, I always got creeped out during those small chases and the boss fight was a big nope for me. Even after 13 years now, I still get scared of that boss :p

The baby definitely creeped me out in Resident Evil Village, but one enemy that got me more than the baby were the cyborg things from the factory. Man, they still creeps the hell out of me
For me, the Volatiles from Dying Light are definitely the most horrifying enemies to run from in pitch dark. Nightmare fuel.
The giant rats in souls games, I still remember seeing one for the first time in the sewer in ds3. Ran like hell
The Rats in souls games are very easy to underestimate. Most games make rats the easy enemy, so I see rats I think I can handle that no problem, then I die... from rats.

I got to say I’m surprised that you did not talk about the banshee from mass effect 3 the first time I heard/saw one I was screaming what is that.
When I was young I was creeped out by the flood from Halo. 343 guilty spark was not the level I imagined.
I feel like The Suffering gets left out a lot because it's underappreciated and overlooked. The whole game has you on edge from constant noises from the manifestations of executions.
Or Dante's Inferno has some nasty monsters too

Couldn't agree more. First time i played as a kid, the small puddle creatures (Mainliners i think?) scared me so bad, i stopped playing for days.
@@kamele0n946 Yes, they are Mainliners. It took me a couple play throughs to realize in the shower area that you need to shut off the water to keep them from spawning. Usually I just ran through as I get needled.

I think for me as far as creepiness goes it will always be The Evil Within 1 and 2. Always tough to get through the game because damn do I feel alone and empty in those worlds. Anxiety goes through the roof and the creepy enemies . Good times.
The Wormface from enemies in Elden Ring was super creepy when I first came across them.
The rat king is at Ground Zero of the Seattle outbreak Falcon, not the San Francisco one. Maybe we’ll see that in Part 3 😉

The most recent creatures for me that I can think of which gave me a creepy feeling is either, the bugs from Grounded or the leviathans from Subnautica.
the roar from the reaper will haunt me until the day i die.... best part. when you can hear it, it can see you.... that info made them just more terrifying

Bloodlickers from Bloodborne always creep me out. Especially in Chalice dungeons when they appear randomly if you do a visceral attack.

Bro how did you not include the Regenerators from RE4!?!?!? Those are BY FAR some of the creepiest looking enemies in ANY game. Especially with their ability to slither along the ground and come after you if you blow off all their limbs.
Those RE 4 Regenerators scare all the hell outta me. I'm all out of hell because of those things.
I don't know if this would count as a terrifying enemy encounter (probably not), in Dead Space the sudden transmission from either Hammond or Daniels would always make me jump out of my skin. Especially after a tense fight/run for your life moment.
Also, in Dead Space 2, those raptor sounding Necromorphs. Those things were terrifying. Not especially difficult, but the way they stayed hidden and made those sounds was unsettling. Especially when one starts screeching on your left and a second one rams you from the right.
Don't forget how they'll peak out from behind objects to look at you. But my god I hated fighting those things.
It’s wicked old but Parasite Eve on the original PlayStation was full of creepy moments and I loved that game with early weapon mods etc. Great for second play through getting to keep weapons and stuff. Miss that game!
i was about to comment how it was so strange that the evil within didn't get brought up in a list about freaky monsters but then i realized that it has been almost 6 years since the last installment
The Nightmare in prey deserves a spot on this list, while you CAN cheese him, that dude can be scary as hell.
Especially that roar that it makes when it spawns...
Nothing made me turn back quicker more than this quote "Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?".
Mr. X was a genius design in horror! Also, the baby had to be number 1 on this list. My first time seeing it, I said 'nope' and uninstalled it. I eventually had courage to beat the game.
Mr X got everyone planning their route like Tony Stark discovering a new element, truly one of the worst possible things to happen in videogames is enemies entering safe zones meaning they have nothing "Safe" that and also running out of bullets and heals in the end of the police department part, having a giant dude just running after you and 5 dogs just materializing in your face has scarred me for life.
These creepy enemies are as scary as Spanish moms pulling out a flip flop for disciplinary lessons
Night Time on Dying Light 1 is the Scariest thing I have ever played in a game. The way it makes you play so stealthily on a night or you just hide in a safe zone or run like crazy to safety is perfection. I've never seen a game that was actually trying to be scary succeed in being scary because the gimmicks they use are boring. I also think a lot of players when they bought the game had no idea it would be that terrifying.
Same here then when they spot you they just go all out and the flash light doesn’t help that much am still running around like a headless chicken getting more and more scared 😂
Before i even watch i'm going to guess that singing brain frenzy monster thing from Bloodborne has to be in the list, right? That one immediately came to my mind when i read the title. Scariest creature i ever encountered in a game.💀

The first time I ran into a lechen in the Witcher 3 really spooked me. I was riding through the forest on Roach when it stepped out from behind a tree. Needless to say, I was mashing the hell out of the button to get Roach to run like hell.
I made the mistake of seeing one and charging it, thinking how tough could it really be? That was a mistake...a VERY short lasting mistake!!!😂
No one ever gave me the "run for your life" feeling more intense than the Pyramid head from Silent Hill 2

The first enemy in a game I can remember being scared by was the shark in Banjo Kazooie. For those that remember, you get into the second level called Pirate Cove and immediately you see a collectable jinjo right under the dock you spawn in. You jump into the water and out of nowhere a shark materializes and you hear this shark themed danger music playing and you panic to get out of the water. Also, Clanker from the same game scared me so bad the first time I saw him.
Can't believe he missed PT, System Shock & Silent Hill 2.

Great list, scariest to me are pretty much anything from the Outlast series. Marta and the priest from 2 are spooky, but Eddie Gluskin from the dlc Whistleblower can go to hell.

ME3 multiplayer desensitized me to Banshees. Fought so many of them that they were trivial compared to the 1-shot snipers and ninjas Cerberus maps would have.
In my case, one of the creepy monster I can remember is the Demon Baby in Dante's Inferno... I really hated them.

The Crows, Ravens or whatever in Bloodborne, there are many creepy enemies there, but these bastards always gave me a jump scare.

Those fuckers now not only are nearly immortal but they also run at sonic speed levels on higher difficulties, it takes you by surprise really hard because they don't look fast at all and the old Regenerador's were super slow

You should’ve included the horrific babies from Dead Space 2. They scared the crap out of me more than any other enemy in the franchise. And the poor Headcrap zombies from the Half Life games. Their cries are also horrifying and heartbreaking at the same time, because they are not dying but used by the headcrabs.
Also those weird floating corpses from Silent Hill 4. I have no idea why they freaked me out so much.
The big daddies always scared the living SHIT out of me. I couldn’t play the game as a kid and had to beat it in my 20’s. The deep bass noise you hear when getting close fucked me up
That friggin Blob Fetus from Resident Evil 8, House Bienevento is unsettling enough with those damn creepy dolls, but getting chased in the pitch black from that motherf#$%ing Fetus.. I had NEVER been as freaked out from a game as the first time I encountered that, it still gives me the chills.
In the novelization of Metro 2032 the librarians actually do speak and mimic the humans who enter the library. One even jams it's hand/arm in through the back of one sad soul and hides behind his body while using his hand like a puppet, speaking through the dying man. Creepy as hell
Just recently played RE Village for the first time a couple weeks ago and just getting to House Beneviento was so creepy, it definitely was the creepy horror section of the game where everything else was the typical RE horror. I will say though, I think the mannequins from the Shadows of Rose DLC was creepier than the baby.

Ghost Leviathans from Subnautica. Or really almost any creature from Subnautica. That game is way scarier than any horror game I’ve played.
You do know what's funny about those Caria Manor: Hands? In Miyazaki original concept art, those were supposed to be actual SPIDERS, but someone in the team said to change that to appeal to bigger audience and NOT to cause arachnophobia in people, so Miyazaki changed it to those creepy hands. To be fair, I would rather have spiders now lol (same ones as in Demon's Souls or like Rom from Bloodborne would be cool :D).
Not only that, but the hands fit more with the whole “Ring” part of Elden Ring. Lots and lots of fingers in the game because of that lol
They kind of lose their edge once you get better weapons, but man, the first time you encounter the T-800s in Terminator: Resistance was terrifying.
I did an entire playthrough of Rdr2 and never found the night people. Unlike my 1st playthrough where I was attacked several times. freaky enemies for sure
