Thanks Shawn. The cool thing is it works the same way for you guys. I’m sure most people won’t be repairing a trim tab but when something breaks like this, it trains your brain to think of a solution instead of the $350 new part to swap in.
Wow great job saving the money and doing the repair yourself. It’s great to maintain your own stuff. Only question I have for this job is should it be a tight fit and should that rod be lubricated first?
Thanks! It’s only a tight fit on the ends which don’t move (hard mounted to the boat). The holes in the trim tab move and the water is the lubricant. Any oil/grease will come right off in no time from the water pressure. Great questions
Thanks a lot Richard. Those holes the screws are in are below the water line and its just a lot a lot easier and less risky to not touch it if you dont have to. Nothing might happen or it could snap or it could cause water intrusion issues. Great question!

Love the videos. Chris can you make video on how to get started on fishing and so on. Would be a great way to learn specially since you are so detailed about it
Hi Chris, just a suggestion for you and your followers: you need to put a small plate of zinc on each flap, in the upper side of it, otherwise you should change again soon the shaft you just repaired. The reason is that the flap is severly interested by the galvanic current, due to the sea water flowing under it. The galvanic current produced by the interaction with the water flow will destroy soon the noblest metal among those that make up the structure of the flap, and I suppose will be again the shaft of the hinge. Make a small hole in the center of the flap, then put the zinc plate in the upper side of the flap that will be secured by a simple pin and a self-locking bolt, and that's it! Change the zinc plates every season and the problem will be fixed for ever.. ;) Enjoy!
Where I work, we usually sand the the trim tabs with a 40-80 grit before painting. It makes it smoother, cleaner, and better for the paint to stick on.
Hey Chris nice video! I just replace my trim tabs on my 24 Grady white explorer. God are they expensive 🤣🤣🤣 Everyone who owns a boat knows the saying the two best days of owning a boat is the day you buy it, and the day you sell it 😂😂😂 Fair winds and following seas brother! SUBBED!
Hello! Just a point of suggestion, you might want to consider placing zinc anodes on the trim tabs. Two dissimilar metals will always corrode the weaker metal even if they are both stainless steel. Having a zinc will make sure the corrosion will happen to the zinc and not your $300 trim tab.
Definitely a great option but the outdrive has a mercathode which apparently was not working so I fixed that and that’s supposed to protect the metals from corrosion.
@@chrisfished unless there are bonding wires from the trim tabs to the out drive the trim tabs are unprotected. Granted, it’s not a massive risk. As your video showed, pretty easy to fix. Good stuff!
I love seeing how you apply learnings from the first pin to improve your method for the second! Did the tape pull off some paint, or is that adhesive residue?
It pulled off paint. I realized the marina painted the boat only a week ago and since this is anti-fouling paint it is designed to come off so barnacles and other sea life wont stick to it.
I love the idea of this channel chris Amazing content as ALWAYS Hope to see more repairs video like that, why not try the restoration of an old boat, or as the drifttang do a powerboat ? Greetings from france !

Great suggestion! I will do a beginners video on fishing freshwater and saltwater!
Change the zinc plates every season and the problem will be fixed for ever.. ;)
Enjoy!
Interesting. I didnt realize moving water could create galvanic corrosion. I will look into it! Thanks a lot!
Where I work, we usually sand the the trim tabs with a 40-80 grit before painting. It makes it smoother, cleaner, and better for the paint to stick on.
Thanks! I used 120 grit to sand it which seemed to work pretty good so far (2 seasons later).
SUBBED!
Haha sounds about right, and welcome aboard!
He is a man with many talents
Keep doing boat DIY vids Chris!
Friday is the next boat DIY on repairing a hole on your boat.
CHRIS YOUR A BEAST
Haha thanks!
Can’t wait to be able to take apart and put a boat back together after a few years on this channel and still not own a boat! lol
Haha that is the goal! You guys are going to love the mish-mash of fishing and DIY repair videos!
Good stuff!
I don't have a boat, But, Now I know how to repair something more🤣 , Thanks Chris!!
And you know what a trim tab is and how it works! Not many people can say that!
Would love to see you take a fishing trip somewhere around the Ozark or Ouachita mountains!
That would be cool! Once I can travel again I cannot wait to go all over!
I alsways thought trim tabs were used for breaking, like airplaines biggen their wings to get more surface area to lose speed
This dude in few years: "How to Repair Plane"

Can you please make a video showing us how to replace the trim tab actuators and blades? That'd be great, thank you. Greetings from Florida!
Great suggestion! If I end up needing to replace them I will definitely make a video!
@@chrisfished do you plan on making a video on replacing a bilge pump and float switch? I could use a tutorial on that for my boat..
