  • The Norfolk and Western Railway was well known for its continued use of steam locomotives into 1960 when it finally switched over completely to diesel almost ten years after some other railroads had done so. Join me as we wath some N&W steam locomotives in action as they handle their trains along the Western North Carolina Railroad, the club layout of the Northern Virginia Model Railroaders in Vienna, Virginia.

    Love the realism with the mallet needing a double tender.👌

    I love N&W steam. I had the honor of taking the throttle for a bit on the 611 back in the early 80's but my favorite is and always has been the Y class.

    Now, see this is what I love. A beautiful layout with steam. I've got no interest in seeing Diesels. I want steam, and a beautiful layout and if I get that, I'm a happy guy.

    Superb! Incredibly detailed layout, truly wonderful. The whole production is 'Speilbergesque'. It was a Joy to watch. I admire the effort required to make that film along with the truly beautiful modelling skills.

    The most beautiful, HO scale, model railroad display, I have ever seen (and I've seen alot)!!! The digital camera, and the sound effects, does the rest. The opening intro, looked like a real-life picture. Wonderful👍👏👏!!

    The Norfolk & Western rr had an impressive variety of steam power during the steam era and it is impressive observing footage of N&W articulated locomotives hauling coal trains. The N&W had some of the best performing types of articulated steam power that they used in freight service consisting of their A and Y class engines.

      I recommend going to local swap meets and looking for bargains. You hve a better than even chance of picking up a steamer with sound far below retail cost.

    I’m not gonna lie, whilst I did enjoy watching the steam engines I was also fascinated by the interurban railway that seemed to also follow a similar route to the N&W. I’d love to see that in operation.

    I’m not complaining since this is a wonderful layout with wonderful locomotives but the 2-8-0 with local freight has an incorrect road number it should be 4-7 if it is a G1 class which lasted into the end of steam with 6 and 7 being preserved anyway great video!

    • @jimmylambert8709
      @jimmylambert8709  11 місяців тому +1

      This was filmed on the club layout of the Northern Virginia Model Railroaders in Vienna VA. The layout models an area of North Carolina, but aside form the signals seems to fit N&W power (among others) very nicely.

    • @jimmylambert8709
      @jimmylambert8709  11 місяців тому +1

      It seems to be. My A has been like that ever since I got it. I just chalked it up to the forces involved with a swiveling powered engine unit doing funny things.

  • @SouRwy4501Productions
    @SouRwy4501Productions 10 місяців тому +2

    The decoder sounds on the A class aren’t the best. It sounds more like a diesel than a steam locomotive, and the whistle sounds like a horn. Despite that, the rest of the layout, engines, and overall look and sound are still great.

    Too bad that nobody has the last American steam Locomotive Norfolk & Western #244.
    It was built in 12/53 and it was inservice for 4 1/2 years until its retirement in March of 1958.
    But then it was sold for scrap metal.

    … but thats H0 or smaller, …
    everybody speaks about Problems, jerky run-up,
    no scaleconform tracks, wagons and locos are not in quality scale,
    they drive, brake or accelerate too fast, and there are unnaturally much tracks.
