Singapore took 10 years to finally clean our river from 1977 to 1987. To think that one can clean a river in only the span of less than a year is wishful thinking. The clean up should have started it in 2017 the moment that they found out that Paris 2024 was happening.

It's not like the athletes get to choose where exactly they will compete, and they've trained a lot (years) just to get to the Olympics. Simply making it into the Olympics is no easy feat and it only happens every 4 years. There should be a reasonable expectation of safety and they were basically lied to about it yet ended up suffering the consequences. In 1969 the Cuyahoga River in Ohio had caught on fire several times from pollution. That is why we need to continue environmental protection measures: The water was nearly always covered in oil slicks, and it bubbled like a deadly stew. Sometimes rats floated by, their corpses so bloated they were practically the size of dogs. It was disturbing, but it was also just one of the realities of the city. For more than a century, the Cuyahoga River had been prime real estate for various manufacturing companies. Everyone knew it was polluted, but pollution meant industry was thriving, the economy was booming, and everyone had jobs.

I did this race in Long Beach harbor where we had a 2-mile swim in Open water and when I got out I was just covered in green slime, kind of the color of radiator fluid.
Kept rinsing and rinsing and it wouldn't even come off. Head to toe.

So they knew that storm water and sewerage were flowing into the river. Then they expected human beings to swim in it! That's the most disgusting, reprehensible thing I've read in a very long time. I'm so grateful that I live in a Country where sewerage does not flow into the rivers, but into treatment plants so it's cleaned up.
