  • As an experiment, I used ChatGPT to help write this script. About 70% of the script came from the AI assistant and was altered slightly. Overall I think it was so-so. I don't plan to use it again, it just took too long to get something usable out of it and in the end I believe it will hinder my research and ability to form ideas/arguments.
Anyway, I have heard some bad arguments against different types of PEVs. Mainly electric scooters, electric pedal assist bikes and electric unicycles. So I wanted to share my opinion on the matter. What do you think? Do you think PEVs should be banned? Are there good arguments about electric micromobility.

Those people are 100% projecting their inability to see personal transportation as anything but a sport, which is something most people in North America (and possibly other places) have unfortunately grown up believing due to car dependence.

Also you can't fold the motorcycle and put it in your car trunk, with a E-scooter you don't need license, registration and insurance in most cases. There no need for gasoline and costly maintenance. If you ride mostly at 40 kmh and below you need only a bicycle helmet, gloves and maybe knees/elbows protection. And finally E-scooters don't make huge noise that bother an entire neighbourhood.

You can add to that how much are licensing fees? How much is a motorcycle endorsement fee each year on your license? How much does it cost to fill up a motorcycle with gas each time versus the fractions of a penny it costs to fill up my PEV?

Awesome - I think the PEVs make much more sense than full on electric cars and trucks. As you pointed out, one F-150 truck have the equivalent batteries of over 200 electric bikes. If we can get 200 people to use a PEV to cover short trips then that is much better for the environment than one electric truck, I think.

The ghost is great for shopping cause i can bring it in the store and not worry about it getting stolen and i can put 1 of the stores hand baskets on the deck and use my ghost as a shopping cart but take up less room than a shopping cart, then i just throw my stuff into my 2 reusable bags, put them on the handlebars and ride home. A couple months ago, I was on a MUP and someone using an e-scooter whizzed past me. Probably 30km/h. There was a downward ramp, and on their way down, they almost fell forward onto their face. They weren't wearing any safety gear, heck they were wearing a full suit and tie. You know that painful, split-second jolt of adrenaline you feel, like if you think you're about to fall down the stairs and you catch yourself just in time? That's what it felt like watching them. I honestly thought I was about to witness a horrible accident. People need to slow down and use proper gear, preferably a downhill helmet to prevent dental damage.

I live in Reykjavik, and there are these electric scooters you can rent. I've seen so many accidents because people have no idea how to manoeuvre properly on these. And I hate how they make city so ugly. They are laying everywhere, blocking the bike lanes very often because people don't care where to park them. And they are being thrown in the bushes. I feel that these shouldn't be rented out anymore. If you want to ride them, please buy one yourself, make sure you know how to control them and look after it.

I actually agree with the first statement as a pedestrian. I don't have the hypocritical position of agreeing while being driver. Cars are too fast too. Especially when the speed limit is considered a suggestion and suburban drivers just love to barrel down urban residential streets as though they are highways, making neighbourhoods like mine less safe.
I don't trust people on ebikes and escooters to share space with pedestrians safely either, especially as they will often choose to be on the sidewalk, even when they have direct access to a protected bike lane. Sometimes their on the wrong side of the street and too lazy to cross or on a one way street and too lazy to go one street over and sometimes they barrel down the sidewalk right next to one.
I'd be okay with it if we still lived in a high trust society but that's out the window. Especially post covid.

Potholes are often created by cars and trucks in the first place, and way more resources are forced to be spent on bloat roads for cars that could've been allocated towards smaller roads for PEV's. In fact most issues you'll hear about PEV's is actually a car problem.

Keeping up with the flow of traffic is a car centrist argument. It suggests that it is the responsibility of people to attain the same level of speed that the fastest vehicles want to travel and not be responsible to go as slow as would be considered safe for their use. Every decision made on the road is expected (by law, common sense, community sense, ethics and morality) to be the safest possible for the situation. If a pedal bike is on the road keeping up with the flow of traffic is a ridiculous argument as this will not be practical for most cyclists in most situations. Safety is paramount when using a shared resource like the commons, not time/speed.

    Hi,
Not an argument to make PEVs illegal, just some questions.
In most countries Cars (etc, including motorcycles) are required to be registered, carrying a visible plate which Identifies them and thus their owner, this is not normally true for bicycles, tricycles or scooters, wave-boards, skates, skies, pogo-sticks or other non/human-powered vehicles.
In many countries the powered vehicles are examined for road worthiness on a regular (annual) basis, not so for non powered.
You normally require a Licence (of competence) to drive the powered but not the non powered.
In most countries you require 3rd party insurance to use powered vehicles but not non powered.
PEVs seem to want to be in the non powered category, why?
Note I suggest they want to be in the non powered category because they don't generally have any space for a registration plate.
Note in the UK power assisted bicycles are in the non powered category, I believe they first existed in the 1930s and were specifically excluded from the powered vehicle restrictions, but we did also get the moped, which is powered (thus with all the powered vehicle requirements.
I believe in France there is a lesser designation of Quad Bike, having less restrictions, but required to be registered.

This is something I want to investigate further. I know in some countries, anything capable of 30kph+ requires license/registration. I am not against it necessarily. But I believe an important factor that must be carefully considered is, will that barrier to entry be a net positive or negative to society.

They're not too fast. Nobody says that about cars, yet most people's cars can go at least 100 mph and many are limited to 125. And so what, you don't drive them that fast. And on the same note, how many people would be pleased to be driving a car that could only do 65 or 70 flat out? Well how often do they exceed that speed anyway? It doesn't matter because that's less the point. It's nice to have power as it's needed. Not so you can go 125 mph

    • @happydappyman
      @happydappyman Рік тому

One other thing about "not that green". Yes, some places still use dirty power or whatever. It almost doesn't matter though, it's such a dumb argument to even make. I mean watching tv all day or playing videogames for a few hours uses a similar amount of power and nobody would ever bring up how dirty that is for the environment. It's just a ridiculous thing to say. Especially when your car probably uses the same energy to pull out of the garage and get to the end of the street as a pev uses for its whole trip

First off I'll just say that I live in Finland and thus we have the EU wide limitation of 25 km/h on PEVs.
While I do consider PEVs to be a good mode of transport especially in the larger population centers I do think that some forms of PEVs aren't all that great. E-bikes are a great form of transportation and I do honestly think we need more of those. What I think we do not need however are the e-scooters. The scooters should not even be going 25 km/h in my opinion. I personally ride a non electric bicycle and a motorcycle so I would say that I have quite a good understanding about different two wheeled vehicles.
I have ridden e-scooters quite a few times and I think there are some major issues with the handling characteristics of those things. I have sometimes said that e-scooters are somewhat comparable to a two wheeled shopping cart. First off the center of gravity is way too high, secondly the rake angle of the front wheel is too low and thirdly the small wheels all make a combination that requires even me to be way more aware on the vehicle than even on my motorbike. I own a Suzuki SV 650 S and that thing is fairly close to a racebike riding position and handling. I can even ride some small bends with only one hand on the handlebars while resting the other one on the tank. However I do not feel safe at all when I take my hand off the handlebars of an e-scooter. Also the brakes on most of those things are real bad because of the small wheels. This means that they will not stop all that quickly. I am able to stop my bicycle on a dime even from the speed of 30 km/h without even lifting the rear wheel, but those e-scooters need a lot more braking distance. E-scooters would be viable if they were made so that they would have larger wheels, better brakes, longer wheelbases, larger front wheel rake angles and a lower center of gravity that could be achieved by having the user be seated. Then they would be considered e-cruisers and those things are just plain awesome in my opinion. I do think that the e-cruisers are also a viable option with e-bikes.
Some issues with PEVs are also that most people do not wear protective gear with them. Many people do not even have helmets and at the speed of 25 km/h it would be highly needed. Even when I am riding through the city on my motorbike I always wear a full set of protective gear that has riding boots, riding gloves, a riding jacket, riding pants and a good helmet so if I was to go down I would be able to walk away with just some bruises in most cases. On a bicycle I have some gloves to protect my hands and also a helmet. PEVs go at such high speeds that many users should start to wear at least a helmet, but because many PEVs around here (and especially in the cities) are the rental kinds they do not come included with a helmet.
Now after all this I will also say that half of the issue is the driving culture with some car drivers and also the fact that the city planning is not that great except for the capital of Helsinki. If there were more designated bike lanes and people would be educated about the laws and the laws were enforced there would not be so many people going full speed with e-scooters on busy sidewalks in the city center. Even if the issues with city planning and the culture of our traffic were to be fixed I still would not like seeing e-scooters going around the cities. However I would then say that I would not mind seeing more e-bikes, because those things are actually a safe, easy and quick way of getting around the city.

This reminds me of the phrase "driving is a privilege, not a right"... Yet so many drivers act like it is, in fact, a right, and that removing any vehicle infrastructure whatsoever, even if it contributes to the betterment of the location, is a cardinal sin.
