i've seen an E-scooter have a transformative effect on a work colleagues quality of life but i have to say i don't like how the rentable ones are just littered everywhere as they in London.
In Washington, DC you now have to lock e-scooters to bike racks or other specified fixtures at the end of a ride, and you have to submit a photo through the app showing you locked the scooter in an approved location.
@@cjohnson3836 the roads and everything that cyclists use are public infrastructure also, it's not like we're paying a special bike tax for our paths. That prevents bike public/private bike racks from being used and keeps them from being scattered everywhere, kind of a win win except it limits the usefulness
@@cjohnson3836 Well that was totally illogical. How is 'private business' any factor in this, are you some kind of rabid socialist? Yeah I have actually leased a proper, far better e-scooter. I can't stand those poor quality (and dirty) rental scooters. With my own e-scooter no restrictions either. I chose monthly leasing because it was available where I live and I wanted to first see how this thing works, how handy it is. For me it's been great: now I don't need to use my very impractical bicycle at all and I just use my car or e-scooter or both (e-scooter in car's trunk and then continue the last bit on the scooter). Cos even with regulations for cars there's still 100s of accidents
@@JaredJames-bm9fp the non-electric adult kick scooter also exists, it’s so fast down hill and light enough to kick, walk or carry up hill! Watch out for the plastic wheels ones, rubbish in the wet but pneumatic wheels exist too 😊
No way I'd park a Pinarello F12 in front of a shady bar or leave it there when I've had enough that it's safer to Uber home instead of ride... or just abandon it when I run into mates and plans for the day change. I ride a Bianchi and eScooters... living in Rome, each has it's place.
I would take this bike and attach it to my backpack. if the shopkeeper wouldn't like that . I politely apologise and find another place where I can do the damn thing. many times that worked.
Great contradiction of what Simon was saying a couple of weeks ago about escooter use in Bath - no reduction in car usage so the escooter journeys are people who used to previously walk, cycle or use public transport; all of which are cleaner than escooters.
That has always been my main argument to people who use escooters. You have to consider what mode of transport is *displaced* when people switch to escooters. In my experience, it's always people who would have/could have walked, biked, or taken the bus/train.
@@Scooby2606 are all buses diesel? And if they are, do they need to be nowadays? First West of England in Bath have a fleet of electric buses. So 40+ people on one e-bus or 40+ scooters 🤷♂️

Just need to comply with some set of rules to be accessible as road friendly.
Considering that statistically cars are unused 90% of the time, this is a great way of not contributing to the problem more, without worrying about it being stolen, maintenance, place to leave it, etc. I also like how UK is implementing it - you don't get manually derestricted scooters flying between people, through a park. Hank's 36m trip sounded expensive though
What a superb challenge and show. These comparisons are really inventive and fun, plus good tourist publicity for Bath (now I'd like to visit there again). Keep it up guys. Thanks.
To be a stickler plastic are hydrocarbons so there is carbon in pretty much everything, also I'll not mention the energy used to recharge them/ mine for the batteries
I appreciate the following is a specific personal response of a Bath resident and in a convoluted way supports cycling… Although the concept of this video is very good and something I’ve considered it’s slightly flawed (I’m Bath anyway!). That’s because the actual quandary most face is not, “shall I take my scooter or bike sightseeing in a world heritage site?”, but in fact “how can I get from my home to point B without turning up hot and sweaty”. Taking the latter, with the majority in Bath don’t live in the E-scooter area so unless they’re an avid, all weather cyclist will probably just drive. It would be interesting to see this video redone in Bristol as their E scooter area is much larger and could be a “day of chores/commute” instead. The worst/most dangerous place in Bath to ride the scooters is along the top of Victoria park as it picks up the “slow zone” of the inner park. Cars don’t appreciate it when the scooter in front of then suddenly slows down to 10kph 🙈
I love this video for two reasons. One, Bath is beautiful and the city was the winner here. And, two, because the presentation was low key. I love manic Hank but it's nice to see a video with the presentation in a conversational tone.
Seeing Manon win so convincingly doesn’t make me feel any better about being overtaken on Bathwick Hill by one of those e-scooters. Neither of you made it to the canal, that was the river! Great to see so many local landmarks.
I’m really impressed with the Voi Scooters in Bristol, use them a lot for short trips, to the shops etc.. Don’t have to lug my Brompton down six flights of stairs and don’t have to either lock it up 😬 or carry it round the shops. Anything further I’ll use the bike, ‘cos it’s quicker and I’m more comfortable in traffic on a bike. It’s a good balance and I’m still not using a car 👍
I think this is a key benefit of the scooter and bike rentals, security of the bike becomes a non-issue. Especially when combined with other forms of public transport, trains buses etc. it would’ve been interesting to compare the energy used as well. Clearly Hank had to run a bit but the rest of the time he wasn’t expending a lot. And for arriving at work not needing a shower etc can be important too.
Yeah I got a proper Micro scooter which are a million times better than those rental ones. It's made by a European company too, not Chinese. When you use them often proper scooters are cheaper than rentals. No restrictions either. Far better to ride than rentals. E-scooters absolutely murder bicycles in practicality: even in the summer and with hills there's no sweat, a million times more comfortable, as you said no need to go get a bike from a bike storage or alternatively carrying an e-scooter is easy. I do have to lock my e-scooter but I live in a country and town where I actually feel safe enough to not even lock it most of the time. And what's really great is I can just pop it in my car and take it anywhere! I've even managed to make my runs far better by dropping off the scooter at the end of my running route, drive on to the start of my running route, then after running I just scoot back to my car. That way I don't always have to do loops or back-and-forth-routes and am far more flexible. I took my scooter to Italy on holiday this summer and it was the perfect way to cover ground in the heat and long walking distances, especially when I could so often only get parking miles from the destination.
5:27~Pricekess! This is why we all love Hank. 13:31 There is NO way I would try that on a scooter...impressive. I'm with Manon per scooters. They just aren't cool. Plus here in KC, the scooter companies place the damn things anywhere they want and idiots park them in bike racks which are rare enough as 'tis. I did think that Manon would win by a lot more time. Thanks for the laugh.
That's a cool video. We have recently received a bunch of those e-scooters as a pilot project here in Vernon BC, Canada. I see them used all over the place in town. They seem very popular and many people can be heard laughing while riding them so it must be enjoyable. When I'm not in a car I'm using an ebike to get around so haven't tried them yet. I hope they are popular enough for the city administrators to decide to keep them around. They are a good transportation option.
Maybe I am getting old but the scooters round Birmingham are always rode on the pavements and they are so quick proper dangerous I think in city centres. They are to slow to use on the road but way to quick for pavements. I am suprised hank wasn't in lycra though for aero benefits 😂
Hank, You spoke a lot about safety on e-scooters then at 6.00 minutes you overtook a car on the zigzags approaching a zebra crossing so didn't see the lady waiting to cross. Silly mistake to make that could have caused an accident.
Yes really bad. The sort of thing that gets cyclists hated. Not good at all GCN. Expect better of you. Amazed you didn't even edit that out. Very poor.
where I live there are largely two categories of scooter users 1) people who want to be mobile in a city without a car, but don't want to be labeled a "cyclist" 2) bored tens
I would rather be on a bike, but I am a big supporter or e-scooters. I think they are a good use of greener tech for city centers and make green transportation more accessible for the masses.
In NY (and some other cities in the US) we have e-mopeds that you use just like the scooters. Love them! So much better than the scooters especially because you park them like cars so they arent strewn all over the place making it impossible to walk, but are so easy to park between cars it is never an issue. They cap at 25ish miles an hour and are super convenient and fun!
i know e-Scooters are still not legal in the UK, but this feels a little unfair with all the slow zones lololol. great vid tho. Hopefully things get sorted out with e-scooters and you guys can try this again with a bit more level playing field! maybe add a third person on an ebike? lolol
I knew Manon would win just because of the speed of the bike plus I would choose a bike as well so much cooler than a E-scooter. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
6:00 Hank, and camera bike, literally overtook a car slowing down for a pedestrian crossing with zero visibility/checks of who was about to cross, then ploughed straight across it. Zero cool
Here in Qatar, they're selling unrestricted e-scooters capable of 80 kph for only 2000 pounds. I've already seen one boy in hospital for three months after taking one onto gravel at that speed. I trust the EU/UK will have sense about not allowing sales of derestricted versions.
Ride Brompton or road bike nearly every day. Rode a scooter for a few months just early in the AM. They are very unstable and you will be more prone to injury. Wet surfaces especially treacherous. Hope that helps..
I commute on my cyclocross bike, it works all year around even in snow (in Sweden we usually get snowy winters). E-scooters might be good for shorter commutes but I have 17km one way so I prefer real bike also for that reason.
Weird premise... Hank's on a tourist-friendly accessible rental, intended for urban use, etc. Manon should be on a bikeshare bike if we're comparing like for like, but I don't think the point of an e-scooter OR a bikeshare rental was ever to get across town as fast as possible.
I have an Ebike, and an Escooter. I love them both, the bike is great for a bit of exercise (while still getting me where I need to go pretty quickly), the scooter is a bit slower, but lots of fun (it's also easy to store at work). The scooter is illegal in my country, so I have my bike for heading out in public while I wait for the law to catch up with modern technology.
I have an escooter and have traveled close to 1000 km on it since I got it earlier in the year. I use it for commuting and quite enjoy it; however, I still prefer a bicycle. Escooters are great for commuting without building a sweat, but nothing comes close to the feeling of riding a bike.
Bike 1st over e-scootering to get to work. However I do e-scooter if I need to get around the city due to the convenience of being able to get around the city in work clothes.
Closer than I thought it would be. I don't imagine than anyone considering commuting on a top-spec Pinarello would considered an e-scooter or vice versa, and I doubt most people would get close to either Hank or Manon's time!
Road bike hands down will win for sure however, There's a convenience with the Escoot's. I think this all boils down to the user's preference. Neither is good or bad. As an avid road cyclist, I can see myself using the E-scooters every now and then if the need for it presents itself.
I think e-scooters have a place for very short trips. The cost to use them is not competitive with other modes for longer trips. That said, people seem to really enjoy using them. If they can get people out of their cars I’m ok with them.
I do all my commuting for more than 3 years now on a Cannondale m900. Front hub charges my phone while I ride. Rohloff rear keeps my derailer from freezing. Hydrolic front disc brakes, so no more frozen cables, and I can stop in the wet. Thudbuster seat post to soften the hits into my booty. Over 300 miles per week. Potholes, road debris, or deer trails, no flats.

Everything has its place, & if it means less car use, then that can only be a good thing.
Electric unicycle sounds cool... is it hard to ride?
@@arnoldhau1 Initially it takes quite a bit of practice. It's a bit like learning to ride a bike for the first time. The more you think about it, the harder it is. It's more of a subconscious muscle memory learning.
Once you get over that, it's really easy & feels very natural, like you're connected to it.
Electric unicycle sounds really awesome, i didnt know something like this existet 😅

Hank-"I don't think it has any carbon on it actually". Egg heads the world over - *snicker* *giggle*
i've seen an E-scooter have a transformative effect on a work colleagues quality of life but i have to say i don't like how the rentable ones are just littered everywhere as they in London.
In Washington, DC you now have to lock e-scooters to bike racks or other specified fixtures at the end of a ride, and you have to submit a photo through the app showing you locked the scooter in an approved location.
@@Dr.Schlitz So now a private business is taking public infrastructure from cyclists? If that isn't the most American thing ever...
@@cjohnson3836 the roads and everything that cyclists use are public infrastructure also, it's not like we're paying a special bike tax for our paths.
In many places the companies have their own racks and you must return the scooter/bike to one of that company's racks. That prevents bike public/private bike racks from being used and keeps them from being scattered everywhere, kind of a win win except it limits the usefulness
@@cjohnson3836 Well that was totally illogical.
How is 'private business' any factor in this, are you some kind of rabid socialist?
Where did you get your bike, a socialist collective that has nothing at all to do with private business? OMG are you some capitalist pig with your _privately owned_ bike?
How does where you get your mode of transportation affect whether or not it's ok to use bike racks? What does it matter if it's rented or bought, it's people using them in any case.
Seriously I just don't get how some people are so badly indoctrinated by socialist lunacy.
I might soon end my lease and buy one, but actually the lease is so cheap that I'm in no hurry, and I want to see how it lasts after several more months.
Manon was on an F12, that e-scooter didn't stand a chance.
just any bike would have performed about the same in town. the performance difference between a very expensive road bike and an old cheap road bike, would be especially trivial or non existent
Hank, when you took a selfie of the nice view, you should've took the gamble and gone to the finish. I'm sure all the locations would've been in the picture somewhere 😂😂

Combined preferably with Dutch cycling infrastructure 😂
@@MrWoezoe And Dutch hills....
I think the £500 escooter performed well against a 10k bike. I like the escooters. They just need to come up with a safe way for them to be used.
They wouldn't be able to make a SAFE way for people to use them. People would need to be safe on them anyway. They can put all the safety measures and insurance out there. But if someone is dangerous on an escooter and doesn't know how to ride they can still hurt themselves. Its all down to rider's capabilities. Cos even with regulations for cars there's still 100s of accidents
even a £100 bike can beat a scooter.
Cheaper and healthier while better on your health and environment.

Bikes every time! Go Manon!
@@ConsciousBreaks yep. Nobody is getting out of their Range Rover to ride an escooter.
Are you really saying a diesel bus is cleaner than an e scooter?
@@Scooby2606 are all buses diesel? And if they are, do they need to be nowadays? First West of England in Bath have a fleet of electric buses. So 40+ people on one e-bus or 40+ scooters 🤷♂️
@@sfetriathlon2432 Hopefully we'll see a lot more electric buses, but that will take time and a lot of investment. Given the distances and times, I think running would have actually been the fast option here.
what's running?
I think I would struggle to run 7.5k in 32 min to be honest, and that's not including 'selfie time'!
Or would it be more like Hank's 5k if you were able to take short cuts? That would be more doable...
Faster? Maybe, if you are fit enough to actually run 5km. But whether you're fit or not, you'd be sweaty and barely alive by the time you finish.
I think helicopter would've been the fast option.
Are u crazy amigo , a road bike is 3 times faster than running, you drinking 🍻 to much cervesa señor
I was hoping it would be a personal no limits scooter, as these can go faster and anywhere, but I'm still surprised a rentable one was nearly a match! Good video.
Personal e scooters are illegal unless ridden on private land! For the very reason you mention in your comment!

which from the road user perspective this kind of scooter is illegal. right?
it's something like building a moped from a normal bike.

@ 8:10 Handsomeness rivaling all of BTS combined? Love GCN!
I appreciate the following is a specific personal response of a Bath resident and in a convoluted way supports cycling…
Although the concept of this video is very good and something I’ve considered it’s slightly flawed (I’m Bath anyway!).
Hank got dizzy...going to Alexandra park and “arriving ” at Henrietta? 😂
Hey Hank, should have stopped at the crossing at 6.10!
I love this video for two reasons. One, Bath is beautiful and the city was the winner here. And, two, because the presentation was low key. I love manic Hank but it's nice to see a video with the presentation in a conversational tone.
4 minutes difference in exchange of not having to arrive to my destination all exhausted and soaked in sweat? I'm sold.
Seeing Manon win so convincingly doesn’t make me feel any better about being overtaken on Bathwick Hill by one of those e-scooters. Neither of you made it to the canal, that was the river! Great to see so many local landmarks.
“Do you know running?”
“O… running”
Great effort Hank👍🏻
6.06 doesn’t stop for a pedestrian crossing
My god they are shooting an important vid!!!!
Beautiful city! Fit girl. Fun scooter!
Another great zwift video riddled with long adverts for E-Scooters.
Very poor.
where I live there are largely two categories of scooter users
1) people who want to be mobile in a city without a car, but don't want to be labeled a "cyclist"
2) bored tens
Love this challenge!
Those scooters are really making traffic dangerous around where I live. Kids zooming with full speed to blind corners all the time.
That's not the scooters it's the morons riding them and the shit parents letting them do so
I would rather be on a bike, but I am a big supporter or e-scooters.
Manon will win the photo contest anyway - no matter of the means of transportation! 😃👍
i know e-Scooters are still not legal in the UK, but this feels a little unfair with all the slow zones lololol. great vid tho. Hopefully things get sorted out with e-scooters and you guys can try this again with a bit more level playing field! maybe add a third person on an ebike? lolol
No scooter of any kind has a chance against the Dragon Lady™!
I’m addicted to Manon’s selfie
As to the accidents. Walking drunk out of the bar, "I can't drive, but look a handy e-scooter that will get me home safe."
In the US they can get you operating a bicycle, scooter or even a canoe while over the same limit as for a motor vehicle, currently 0.08%.
Worth it!
I knew Manon would win just because of the speed of the bike plus I would choose a bike as well so much cooler than a E-scooter. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
Bicycles aren't cool. It's for soy boys who eat salads. Motorcycles are cool and for real, meat eating men,
6:00 Hank, and camera bike, literally overtook a car slowing down for a pedestrian crossing with zero visibility/checks of who was about to cross, then ploughed straight across it. Zero cool
Oh man just watch the video and enjoy it. Your comment is 'zero cool' we all make mistakes....do you feel better now for pointing it out in UA-cam?
Wnen I'm on my bike, drivers are more eager to pass than when its Mannon riding in front... 😅
Manon 🥰
My choice would be definitely my bike !!! Not only you get a little bit of a workout but it’s a lot more fun…. lol
Nice to see Hank have fun in a ride. The bike was going to win all the way, but scooter looks pretty fun. I would stick with a bike.
Did anyone see the guy at 3:18 gesturing at hank after he cycled past? And Hank tactically blocking him out of frame. LOL.
This is a beast !!!
@ 8:22 Photogenic to the Max!
Manon is fantastic !
Brilliant race. Well done.
I have an escooter and have traveled close to 1000 km on it since I got it earlier in the year. I use it for commuting and quite enjoy it; however, I still prefer a bicycle. Escooters are great for commuting without building a sweat, but nothing comes close to the feeling of riding a bike.
Really like the idea of not having to lock it up, just log out and leave it.
I don't know, but where I live an electric scooter is legally the same as a bike, so you can take exactly the same routes
The same where I live.
But you can walk through shops (at least with a folding proper scooter, not those rental ones)
In UK, currently you are only legally allowed to use rented e-scooters, not on pavements (sidewalks) and there are other restrictions.
@@matthewlewis2072 That's why private e-scooter riders are such badass outlaws. Bad to the bone. All the girls love the bad boys.

Good to see a comparison, good to see the bike won but why did Hank start on MHQX but finish on 8R2Z. Did the scooter run out of battery or was it nicked half way round. Stick with the bike Manon.
I noticed that. Finished on a different scooter than he started on.
There's a guy in my neighborhood who ride an e-scooter like crazy. He couldn't ride a bike anyway... he's surely 300 pounds +. So it's a somewhat good alternative.
Watch as Hank talks about safety and zips through a zebra crossing without looking or slowing down as an old lady is about to cross !
I'd pick the e-scooter to ride with Hank. no way I could keep up with Manon on a bike
