  • A group of Royal Navy sailors braved winds as strong as 90 mph to complete a terrifying training exercise on the Southern Ocean.
    Footage from February 1 shows a small patrol boat navigating its way over rough waves whipped up by extremely strong waves.
    The filmer said that if the boat had capsized the rescue operation would have been difficult as the sea is freezing cold and they were in a remote location.

      @@loddon82 I beg to differ, I am a former Boatswains mate 2nd class USN that was stationed on a fast frigate at Pearl Harbor 84-88. One day during a break in international exercises we had visiting ships from New Zealand and Australia docked alongside the quay where my ship was, while walking by one afternoon we heard a friendly shout from the quarterdeck of one of the ships inviting us on board for a spot of rum and being a man who enjoyed a good drink me and a couple buddies went on board to enjoy some good southern hospitality. Honestly I can't remember if it was the Aussie ship or the New Zealand ship that we went on but nevertheless we went into the mess and thinking a spot of rum equaled a shot were taken aback when i was handed a coffee mug filled to the rim with dark rum. That's when my mates and i were told that all sailors had a daily ration of beer and rum if they were off duty which was a surprise to us to say the least. They also offered beer but I could hardly finish the rum. They thought we were a bunch of lightweights LOL, On the other hand on my ship after 90 consecutive days at sea we were given two lousy budweisers to keep morale high amongst the crew with another few weeks to go before stopping somewhere, you should have seen the wheeling and dealing by the drinkers on the crew trying to get the non drinkers to give us their two beers! In my time whenever heading out for an extended voyage many sailors on board would stash a bottle or two on board to help relieve the monotony. Good times! It wasn't a british ship so maybe that's why they still had their rum ration. Cheers mate!

    • @loddon82
      @loddon82 3 роки тому

      @@hunterroberts9951 I can't speak for the Aussies and Kiwis rum ration but I know for sure the Royal Navy lost theirs in 1970. Junior rate sailors were allowed three cans of beer a day, which they had to buy although cheaply. Senior rates had draft beer on tap and an array of the usual spirits and were expected to exercise restraint. An officer used to check the books now and again to see who was drinking what and how much. I believe the senior rates have now lost their draft beer and also have cans, a very backward step!

    When i was on HMS Guernsey in the early 2000s we used to send out the seariders in similar conditions to board trawlers and inspect nets etc. We lost a searider in roughers similar to this one day in the English channel. The jimmy had the ship and was apparently on the wrong course for recovery (was meant to have been beam on for recovery i believe?) anyway, i was bowman as part of the searider boat crew and i had just attached the bow line after coming alongside the Guernsey and was moving back to take my place for recovery when the bow of the searider broached under a wave and went down, all 5 of us in the boat were tossed into the oggin and had to wait like 20 mins in shitty conditions for those on the ship to sort the port searider out to recover us, the stbd searider later washed up in Le Havre i think it was. I was in my 20s and that left traumatised for a good while and needless to say i branch changed to stoker after that, no more dabbering 🤣

    What's annoying, is, I'm pretty sure those PAC 22 boats / Jet boats , aren't supposed to be used in anything higher than a sea state 4. That looks like. 7 at least. I hope there was a SAR aircraft on standby, incase it went to shit.
