Hi Fred! Thank you for your videos! Excellent work! One of the most important lessons I had to learn as a beginner about 35 years ago was to NEVER try to transmit without a proper antenna. I broke the finals of my first CB within seconds. To my excuse, I was 10 years old at the time and had no clue of radio technology. But I did not give up and continued the hobby up to the present day. Cheers mate from Division 13!
Oh i miss my Rotel 240, York 863, binatone 5 star and the creme of my rig collection, my eprom'ed Hygain 5 with super super hi to super super lo. KC shift, proper roger beep etc etc. All through a zetagi 300w burner, a Melos and a K40. CB was great.
Great idea! We all don't talk about basics anymore - this very helpful for many newbies! You sure are putting a lot of work in your videos, VERY professional! Congrats!
Hi Fred its old George in the Garage. Many many years ago I was a Pirate on CB radios etc. Great fun days. Really enjoyed it. Now a Radio Ham but like everthing Radio. Funds limited due to pension but hopefully back on CB soon. Cannot find a reasonable priced second hand one. Cheers from old George 🤠
After watching a few of your video's, u inspired me, passed my foundation course last week and gone and bought a yaesu ftdx1200. Keep up the good good mate
Love the videos reminds me of being young and taking advice from older guys, im loving the handheld life fred i have a thunderpole tx and i bought an extendable ariel. Its so convient and light and so much fun
@CB-RADIO-UK love it thought I'd never hear myself say that about a handheld. Thunderpole also do a car kit for it.get yourself one punches well above its weight fred.few videos if me messing about with it on my channel
Thanks Fred. I would like to buy a PSU the ac to dc converting unit. I went an watched your other video again. Then it can stay on using house power. the one we had from the old days got dripped on, got wet. Grrrr! It's cool you mentioned people buy patch leads to their antenna with the plugs. That's best to pony up. You get that braid on cable mixed with +. It will demoralize the hobby starter! :) Anyway...
A good beginners guide as usual fred so the wiring is not ...black to red ..red to black and blue to bits then 😂 DOH ..nice to see you encouraging new ones... keep up the good work 👍
My first rig was a 40 ch AM Jaws mk2 with a DV27 on a metal bread basket in my bedroom at my moms house.. The guy who sold me the rig had to SWR the antenna in for me as I hadnt a clue what it even meant ! ...Happy days
Fred you have bought me back to CB after a 35 year brake I got my 360 out and sent it away for upgrade and full service purchased a mobile aerial now to check the swr after sorting out the power in the mobile thanks mate and keep up the good work
Hello Fred it took me more than i anticipated to get myself a CB radio financial reasons, i just had delivered a Thunderpole T-X with a car kit also i will probably get another radio for my base but only after my summer holidays, i was re watching you videos and just realised that i didn't order an SWR to set up my car antena hopefully we will hear each other on the air i live around Potters Bar i will let you know after i set up the car antena because the radio doesn't reach to far on stock antena. Keep doing this video they are very informative.
Hi Dan. Great news. Your in my range for sure in Potters Bar. When your set up if you want to arrange an on air contact with me just drop me a new comment on here and we can work something out.
Bought the Aries 2 at Christmas and once you get use to it it's great at home. But Last week bought the ss9900 for the car and find it fiddly and haven't got a clue but early days. I live on the lowest part of the fence and have to run the 503 all the time.
Bought myself a Cobra 29 LTD Classic AM/FM CB last year, currently saving up for a Stationmaster antenna (Australian made 11m antenna). Also picked up a 13.8v power supply from Jaycar, seems to be taking for ever to save money due to the cost of living!
Great video thanks. I don't know why DC cable manufacturers insist on having a red stripe on the negative black lead. It caught me out once! Luckily the damage wasn't serious.
Thanks for your info on your channels i am now up and running properly now antenna on the parasol base was i the thing that done it for twig. Cheers fred.👍
I remember in the 90s when new breakers came on with a really bad buzzzzzing noise because they were using a battery charger for a power supply lol .I was lucky there was a lot of breakers close to me that kept me rite saying that i was on the air for over a month before i got told about SWR .
Hi Fred thanks for the tutorial , I’m in the process of getting started again well thinking about it nothing purchased as yet ! and would you believe I actually chucked out one of those exact same Bremi power supplies last year I’d had it since the early 80s 🙄 typical huh …never mind I was probably due a new one if I’m honest lol 👍
Good morning Fred. I need an explanation. I live in a building with ten floors. I'm twenty meters from the roof. I need at least thirty meters of antenna cable. I will lose signal strength and what cable a need to use? Keep te good work. Cheers from Portugal.
Hello Fred thank you for sharing as always . I was thinking of purchasing the Alinco DX-10 , the only hesitating thing about the DX-10 is it's only 20-25 watts on SSB & 4 watts on FM UK 40 , I already have the CRT 6900 & it's a very similar radio but the 6900 has more power , I also have the CRT 9900 too. I like the Alinco DX-10 due to it's build quality & it's fairly compact size , but I'm struggling to see what benefits I would have in owning an Alinco DX-10 ? & I'm interested as to why some people prefer the Alinco DX-10 to the 6900 ? , the Alinco must have some benefits over the 6900 ?, I just need to find out what those benefits are before I purchase an Alinco DX-10 ?.
Thank you for information Fred , it's much appreciated . I have the 7900 V turbo & that is a really nice radio . It looks like I'll probably get the Alinco DX-10 , it will be a an addition to my radio collection :) .@@CB-RADIO-UK
Hi fred, thanks for all your videos. I’m brand new to CB, and wrting from France. I’ve purchased a president Mc Kinley that I have just installed in my car today. I was surprised to realize, strating it for the first time, that I had been provided with an export modified radio ( from the shop) when I only wanted an EU mode radio. First trials, TOS/WATT meter connected, with a TOS measured at 1.3, i could measure my output power on my watt meter in AM/FM mode, but nothing seems coming out in LSB/USB mode. When I press the PTT button, nothing moves on the meter, and TOS = 0. Do you thing it’s normal ? If modulation works in AM it should only work in LSB/USB should’nt it ? Grateful if you can help, I’m lost !! Kind regards, Serge
Hi. Yes your correct when you dead key in SSB no power will be produced till you talk into the mic, then it will peak up and down. This si because unlike FM there is no carrier wave.
Hello! I'm new subscriber. And I'm new in this hobby. Recently l bought a cb radio,is an uniden pro 510xl with 7 watts output. The question is what kind of stabilizer power supply I need? Thank you. From Mexico
Hi fred, well after a couple of months i have got rid of my CB setup, 2hrs a day diferant times nobody local and 4 DX contacts, i am going to DARK side and sitting my foundation HAM ticket, i am up in Saltburn Bye the sea and CB is dead, HAM is very busy, i had to use social media to find other breakers, beats the object. i am so sad CB used to be great 40 years ago........
@@CB-RADIO-UK Yeah I can hear usa on midband just shows you with old bit around you can make something out of rubbish for free the right length of material

@@CB-RADIO-UK Well that was a depressing read. It kind of tallies with my expereince of HAM the past month or so finally getting some kit to listen in to see whats what. To be frank, whilst the kit is all interesting, the folks out there will all be dead in 5 years time. As others mentioned its a bunch of guys in their late 70s+ talking about their health, kit and signal strength and thats it. I get the feeling I've arrived 40 years too late to this hobby. I looked up the info needed for a license and to be honest for what you get to do, it seems a waste of effort. I can just walk down the old folks home...
Sorry Fred but in this video you give some very bad advice for beginners. For instance buying premade patch leads. These are the worst quality coax and will only help to put people off of the hobby because they will just cause so many problems. Sorry mate, usually your videos contain a lot of useful information. However. On this one you seem to have misplaced your mojo.
Hi. No need to apologise as everyone is entitled to an opinion. I myself have bought patch leads which are a direct short and needed a re solder. However this video is aimed at the true beginner who has never touched a radio let alone picked up a soldering iron and attempted a PL259 plug. In this scenario the video in my opinion works best with a pre soldered patch lead.
Anyone who has to be shown how to wire up the radio is not going to be able to solder on pl259s so I agree with Fred and buy one ... sorry but you are wrong and assume everyone has the same skills

Yes thats true and some have live pins.
Nothing is important unless it takes a Long Time to introduce it.
