You could go to your local tractor supply or rural king and buy a gallon of tractor enamel and spray it out of a gun. It would've been cheaper and looked a lot better. We've painted our circle track cars with it for 20 years
I 100% agree. Rattle cans are a waste of time and money and the finish sucks.
Spend a little money on an acrylic enamel or urethane paint with UV protection that rattle can paint don’t provide. They fade and get chalky rather quickly.
That would require buying a gun and a air compressor and that’s out of the budget. I think he was really going for keeping it $115.
@@hunterton4310 guns aren't expensive anymore. I guarantee you i can buy a gallon of enamel and a gun good enough to shoot it for the same amount of money and it would look 10 times better
Been doing it for years and years
This is true, go to HF and buy the $20 purple gun and you are good to go.
Yes do it all the time
When using rattle cans:: When you are done, but still have plenty of paint in the can, turn the can upside down and spray until no paint comes out. This cleans the rattle cans tip.
These cans don't work like that, they still spray upside down. There's no way to clean it out unfortunately
so much better than using "Shine Juice" on the rust.. I hate the "Patina" look. nice job
Puppy steals the show. Great paint job.
Temperature and prep is the key. If you're concerned about tapelunes, in the future, roll the tape where the two-tone is going to be. This will give a much lighter tape line than straight masking.
My opinion, when your weather is warmer, do the bodywork on the '58 and do the blue and white two-tone paint job on it. Take off trim where you can, and tapenthe mounting screws in their respective holes. Tape is cheap, and the screws will be in the proper place so as not to accidentally run too long a screw into a spot. (Yes, I did that once when I was 11. Still remember that 41 years later)
As a body man you had me crying when you broke out the grinder for a decal 😆 best thing to use is a round rubber eraser that goes on a drill or a die grinder, it will take any decal off and not bother the paint
I wasn’t playing around 😂
Well said, I said that above
I was thinking the same thing lol
@@DylanMcCoolVideo You kicked its butt!! lol
My Father when I was young had a black lab named Dixie. Great retriever, maybe one of the best he had.
To anyone that wants to do painting, the prepwork should take-4-5 times longer then the actual painting. Prep work really makes it come out its best.
No kidding. 90% prep, 10% paint.
Yep all in the prepwork🤯
This why I like patina and ratrods.
That and you don't cry like a sissy when your new paint gets the first scratch especially on a pickup or 4x4 that by their nature will get scratched.😜
@@DylanMcCoolVideo you painted over the chrome on the back lights, so it dont look that good with the rest of the lights on the car. but it can be easily fixed with chrome spray. hopefully you fix it.
I spent about 14 hours blocking my wife's Karmann Ghia,.. and my painter had it shot in 20 minutes, but it looks great
I remember last year, I wanted to fix up the headlights on my SAAB, the masking and sanding took almost two hours, the varnish going on, 10 minutes.... I was pretty ticked about it, but at least they don't look like crap anymore :))
It does look a lot better. A helpful suggestion is to make sure the paint is warm as well as the metal. Cold paint and warm metal will give this same result.
100%, had he let the paint soak in some warm water, like @mooremotorsports, he'd have ended up fine I think.
@@AndreMarek64 although I would like the dodge diplomat four door if it's a 1984
I love how much progress you have made on this car. keep it up champ!
It's a nice coincidence, but I bought a 87 Diplomat, former Springfield, Illinois city police car, mine was all white, blue interior. It took about 7 months to get all the parts it needed, but it's up and running now. I stuck with the original 318, eliminated the lean burn, very low miles for a former police car, it's at 126000 miles, and it is very reliable. I drive it often.
The wrinkling can also be due to a reaction with the paint underneath. Recommend priming first. Then panel wipe and ensure the paint can is warmed at least up before you paint.
Those turbo cans are awesome. I painted my 72 satellite with them, and it turned out awesome.
Almost too much paint at once 😂
@@DylanMcCoolVideo you’re not getting the first time I went to go use one I didn’t do a test patch, and that was a mistake. You have to get so far back from the surface. You’d think it was a sniper paint.
Lol no way, I just found your channel today lunar and watched when you spray painted that car an hour ago😄 crazy the timing of thing in life sometimes. Me my self am trying to fight the urge to just spray paint my project car..I know I definitely shouldn't, I've been getting together supplies, air sanders, couple paint guns, hoses, dryers, regulators, a 2 stage 60 gal compressor, and a pop up gazebo I plan on turning into a paint booth to put in the corner of my shop. It's all about time, patience and alot of work I guess. In the mean time I'll try to resist spray painting my car..
I am happy to see the progress on that old beauty.
Wow Dylan that paint job looks awesome!! I can't wait to see it all finished and driving down the road. Awesome job and great work!!
Great idea, using your lift as a "paint booth".
Definitely an improvement...Can't wait to see the finished product...Awesome job Dylan!!!
This was excellent. I learned on spray cans. Been doing it for more than 50 plus years. I do own all the proper equipment. For smaller projects you can't beat, spray cans. My biggest gripe with the rattle can has been the size of the spray pattern. So thanks for finding this rustoleum product. I got a can of clear coming, can't wait to try it. You are totally correct, the prep and application are critical. When i saw you doing the hood, i shuddered, i knew that was a do over. Have done the same thing. A body man I am not, just very critical of my finishes. Thanks again. That was a very good finish, wet sanding and buffing are really make that look great.
great job.. what an improvement ... and it did not cost that much.... looks great thanks for sharing
Man Dylan that surprised the heck out of me, for a rattle can job it's really nice, thanks for the tip my Mopar buddy 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅
Looks pretty good for a rattle can job. Can't beat the price...🤘
For what it is , what you want it for , and for what you got into it, it looks awesome! . 😊
Looking good Dylan! Your cop car is almost done! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
after so long just realised you are left handed Welcome to the club Cheers!
We live in a right handed world!
It came out just like Andy Griffith's sheriff patrol car in MayBerry, GREAT JOB DILLAN!!
Who needs a DA when you have Dylan's sand hand. Good work bud.
Big Relief seeing you back after 2 weeks, Dylan.... I was concerned a crazed Chevy fan might've kidnapped you.. Us Tennessee people gotta lookout for one another ;) The ole' Dip is looking great! Keep up the great work. Disappear for another 2 weeks and us fans will make up an Search And Rescue team lol
Temperature is so important. Got to say it looks pretty dang good. Nice work.
As it's winter and the shop is a little cooler ,I'm always using a hairdryer to warm up paint cans.
Helps up the pressure and it flows nicer.
Looks amazing ive painted atleast 2 cars with turbo both with awesome results and i painted outside then wet sanded with 1200 and waxed looked brand new
Try a 3m eraser wheel on that decals in the future.
Great job!! Boy that car sure has come a long way! Fantastic transformation!
I recently did my Suzuki Sidekick hard top and interior floors with the Turbo Bedliner. Super impressed with the product!
Looks great Dylan!!
The result is amazing, dylan! I'm excited to see what the next steps will be🤯💪👍
Looks as good or better then many Macco paint jobs I’ve seen! Great job you did there!
I looked everywhere trying to find some of those turbo cans last summer to paint my truck bed, drove to neighboring cities and everything before I finally gave up and forgot all about it, I may have to revisit it once it warms back up
23:36 VERY impressive Dily!!!! You still have to make that new police star logo on the front doors!
Good vid, Dylan! I've seen a few "rattle can" paint job videos -- you definitely made it look do-able. Thanks for showing us how!
steve
Love the black lab. I have one we adopted from the Shelter who is totally blind. Such a sweet temperament. Good work on the car, man. Love it
Don't know if this is what happened, but some of the spray paint I have used lately will badly wrinkle and look terrible if you try to recoat and do not wait at least 48 hours. Either put all coats on in less than an hour, or wait 48 hrs. Thanks for the vids! 👍👍
Yeah every coat was put on within an hour. Can said to be above 50 degrees and I know I wasn’t above that with the door being up.
most likely contaminants/recaction to old paint,
sand to bare metal and start from scratch
I have found things like that to happen from not letting the paint off gas before applying more. Not sure the physics of how or why but I do know it's the solvent escaping the paint and if you recoat before it escapes it will find a way out by forcing the paint away making cracks and dots..aka solvent pop
But not to knock it what so ever, it looks decent and I have done several rattle can car sprays and although a lot turned out not so good,I have had some nice ones in recent years mostly because I have learned to do several lighter coats and wait proper time in between them. But the real trick is getting the paint thick enough so you can wet sand and polish it out if you do just a color coat, several coats of clear if you want to sand and polish that avenue.
Hey Dylan: For a spray paint job, you did an exceptional job painting the car and the finished product shows in the quality of the car... Keep up the good work.... From the home PB Blaster Silicone spray... Cleveland, Ohio........
Great job!!!...great video...and by the way, gorgeous Labrador puppy !
Awesome job Painting Thank you for the video
This car came out awesome looking. Now that's how u paint a car on the cheap. Love these old police cars, I owned a Michigan State Trooper blue 1981 Dodge St. Regis. It had 318 that I pulled out and dropped in a 440. Let me tell you what that old car was fun to drive. Keep up the good work!!!
Wow Dillon, turned out great for a spray bomb job! Excellent job my friend!!!
i loved this! thanks for the confidence to do a budget paint job!
came out great. i've gotta find some of that paint! i suggest you reinstall the spotlite, it will be a great touch of authenticity
Old school cop cars have always been cool to me, I’d like to have a 84 caprice
Should have went over the body work with 1000 grit sandpaper to ensure a flat finish multiple times of painting and sanding will ensure a flat finish
I just want to paint the hood on my beater Vibe. Gonna see if i can match the color close enough or paint it gray like the trim. Watching and learning. Nice work.
Maaaan that painjob turned out sweet! Slight wet sanding and its gonna be perfect!
Man that looks good. I can't wait to do some paint work on my car this spring! I never knew that a spray can could have that wide a spray pattern. Thank you for sharing.
Watching painting videos isn’t my thing, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one, well presented with good commentary and good advice. Great job.
Your the first UA-camr I've ever seen on UA-cam and everybody else that I've been fallowing friends of yours or not the list goes on and on
If you spray paint an area then try and paint over it the next day. It will wrinkle. It is because the paint underneath has no hardener and causes the paint underneath to lift.
Always try and paint from one end of the panel to the other.....like a robot would paint it 👍
I need to try those turbo cans. I painted my 66 F100 with regular rattle cans. I pretty much did the same prep wise and it turned out decent. Flat olive drab. I didn't fix any dents because I'm not a body guy whatsoever.
Turbo only comes in black and white, hope they make more colors.
@@rileyhoban1171 that kinda sucks. I'd hope they'll offer it in more colors too.
just a tip,
wash and prepsol/wax and grease remove BEFORE sanding,
otherwise you can sand wax and sillycone into the painted surface causing problems later on
Great video, had no idea it would come out looking so nice!
I like your mood music. It keeps me hanging on every detail.
Looks amazing! Love it! Always wanted to do a diplomat like that!
The cop car looks brand new again keep up the good work dylan
Love black labs! Cutest puppies ever.
Great job, an impressive finish from a can!! Oh, and Dixie is gorgeous.......we need more footage of her :)
That’s looks awesome, okay if you wet sanded it! And you don’t need any additional tools. Love it
Excellent results dude. Especially considering the temp, and the makeshift booth. Turned out sharp. One thing about broken paint cans, I always hold em upside down, let the propellant out, and cut the bottom of the can off, save the paint in little airbrush jars, or just a small mason jar. It will keep pretty good, and sprays from an airbrush very well
Nice paint job! Good music too.
cant complain about how it came out looks great !!!
Turned out great, Dylan! Love the content, and you're spot on. just something about that black and white looks gooooood.
GREAT VIDEO DYLAN!!!! TOTALLY AWSOME PAINT JOB!!!! THIS IS SOMETHING ANYBODY CAN DO!!!! GREAT VIDEO, GREAT RESULTS!!! GREAT PRODUCTS!!! THANKS FOR SHARING!!!! I LEARNED SO MUCH!!!
Good job
Like that light blue Dodge truck out there in the field
Craigs list rebuild. Like it.
I really respect a youtuber who does something like this for our entertainment and then has to read all the comments from the "experts." Good video bro. Not sure how I found you, but thanks for the entertainment! Looks good enough for me! I subscribed!
Looks Great!! Love what you are doing with the car !!!
She looks Awesome Dylan Good Job 👍
Wow! 😮
That’s a major improvement from what it was. I wasn’t expecting it to look this nice.
In fact, the paint jobs from the factory for these cars weren’t all that great compared to now.
I can’t wait to see this when it’s finished.
Man I love those big cans . Ive never saw those. Gotta find them . Awesome. Pex
Keep up the great work. You did a awesome job on your car.
Hey Dylan the police car looks fantastic!! I enjoy watching your channel because you keep it so the people like myself can do the a good job and on a budget helps a lot!!
Came out 100 percent better, too bad you couldn't let the body come up to temp. Great job 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Nice job Dylan!!
Nice job. I love the hubcaps on those cars.
It turned out great! I haven't tried those turbo cans yet.
Considering the amount of cash one lays out for a professional painter to lay a coat or two on, the "ten-foot perfect" standard is the best solution to tidy up an old beast. The great thing about using rattle cans and simple colours is that you can always go buy another one and touch it up if there is a need for repair somewhere down the track. Adding a clear coat to the base coat will add more product on the body and help the wet-sanding to smooth out anywhere there is a textured look to the paint without blowing through the colour layer. Great results can be had with the cans if you take the time to learn how they like to be sprayed - just as you did. The car looks much better and will certainly be an eye-catcher going down the road.....and for good reason! All the best.
IMHO, this is a great job. If I was recreating an old Mopar police car,I’d paint the back doors white also. Give it that Adam 12 look
One thing I'll say. All these comments are great and give me and others alot of options. That's the best thing about these opinions !!!
When are you going to get back to your grandpa's 1970 gmc 3500 pick up I'd like to see more videos on your restoration process of it
I have a plan for it. Just knocking out some of my current projects.
@Dylan McCool ok great I can't wait to see the 70 gmc 1 ton again I'm so excited!!!!
Tip for spraypaint warm to cans in hot water the paint will lay out much smoother
Looks great!
Satisfying to watch, being me though I would have just painted it all black 😆
I'd rock a spotlight and custom angle iron mad max style push bar though!
Awesome looking car Dylan, yet once again.
Would love to see you do a 50's hot rod / low rider.
Heck of a job Sir!
Really nice!
God Bless
😎
Love the videos Dylan great work on all the projects! Look forward to all your videos.
Good job! I've got an old '88 LTD that I should paint up like that.
Hahah man Dylan man that paint job looks sweet i use to have a diplomat back in 2003 ever seen a 2 door diplomat but it was a dark dark blue
Great job. And good luck to you. Nice dog.
Looks Good!

Dylan.....Proud of you Brother.......Heck of a job with rattle can paint job!!!! Can NOT WAIT to see the finished paint job.......TRUNK....HOOD.....Polish.......SO GOOD DYLAN!!!!!!
