When I was little, I hated the Honky Tonk Man - the character. I really appreciate the man behind the character - and all these guys. Giving us a view behind the curtain has been fascinating. Such an interesting and hard life these guys lived.
@@jrep85 I don’t even care about the boxing. If you are a black belt in Judo and also 240 lbs, you are a dangerous man. People don’t even realize how lethal Judo is because everyone the last 20 years has been consumed with BJJ BJJ is literally based on Judo. Judo INVENTED most of BJJ’s submissions. And Judo has a wider array of takedowns in the stand up position than BJJ does - as most BJJ practitioners go for a wrestling single or double leg take down as their main take down.
The nerve for HTM to say that he looks in better shape than Roddy Piper. Roddy wasn't in great shape in 2003 but at least he doesn't have a large belly like HTM does.
HTM always looked pretty strong. Not physically impressive, but he definitely had a lot of upper body strength. Piper was a pretty good boxer though so who knows.
@@ProtomanButCallMeBlues Piper hit the heavy bag and worked up a sweat a few times in the gym. That's it. His Golden Gloves record was about as real as his movies. He started in pro wrestling in his teens. No time to box at all.
@ProtomanButCallMeBlues Piper was ripped, compared to HTM, in the 80s and even in the 90s. I remember seeing Roddy's physique when he wrestled HTM's cousin, Jerry Lawler, at King of the Ring 94 and he was shredded. I don't think Wayne Ferris was ever shredded but the Memphis fans can correct me.
@@rickstalentedtongue910 you can’t compare honky tonk to Nash, Nash was 7 foot tall, most guys would think twice about trying him. Piper use to box, and was reportedly picking on Mr.T back in the day. I think piper would beat honky tonk
I didn't watch this, but Roddy told me HTM tried to buy his name he also said HTM was to be on Legends House, but backed out once he found out piper was going to be there.😂
He is right. I don't personally remember Piper ever losing by pin or submission. There are other wrestlers who have said Piper was very difficult to work with. But it was funny HTM implying that he's in good shape. Probably just meant as good a shape as he was in his wrestling days. I have heard other wrestlers say that he and Jake Roberts were guys everyone wanted to work with because, though their moves were not spectacular, they were precise. Everyone knew they wouldn't get injured and that HTM would sell their moves and make them look good.
I always liked Honky Tonk, but these interviews really made me like the guy a lot more. Not a druggie or alchy, reasonable, and can really tell a good story. Love these interviews.

So we can see who really won this one. Piper wasn't the hero you people would make him out to be. This is a guy who allegedly did sexual favors for other men in order to get *ahem* ahead in the wrestling industry. So we can say Piper's credibility is shoddy at best.
My buddy's friend lives next to Piper's OR home and can confirm the "cokehead" comment. They used to party together frequently. It's truly sad when adults refuse to grow up and their lives become the ultimate pricetag. RIP Rod.
I spat my drink out listening to this horseshit.😂 HTM was a big reason I stopped watching WWF. Dude was fat, slow and lazy. And no, I'm not just upset because "I'm a Piper mark"
I like them both. But prime for prime, Piper wouldve ate his lunch. And yes Piper's legit credentials are inflated and no he was probably never golden gloves champ much less does he have any amateur record despite his claims. But even if all he did was some occasional heavybag work, thats more than HTM ever did. Plus he was legit trained by Judo Gene.
Piper had his demons, substance, emotional, physical, etc... he was troubled but HTM needs to be real. Piper was about as big a star there was in the wrestling business from 84-retirement. From Portland til his finish with big promotions he was always a TOP guy. size, work rate, whatever, he clearly had something few wrestlers before or since had. frankly HTM and Piper have a lot in common. it was their great ability to take a crowd on a ride that got them over.
His run with Savage was the headliner at sold out shows for close to a year working buildings like Joe Louis, the palace, Boston Garden Louisville Gardens Rosemont horizon and the summit in Houston. He may not have the had the main event at WrestleMania but he wasn't strictly a mid carder and had a pretty good run headlining the B and C show towns.
Honky Tonk Man is like that little dog that follows around the big dog Butch. He has no guts. Never did. He only speaks of Piper the way he does because he believes Piper is broken down. The two in their prime? He'd be like that little dog following Butch around kissing Butches arse.
@@Cajunman1977-k3f Roddy had good boxing training and had some judo training from Gene Le Bell. HTM was trained by Herb Welch who was definitely not a slouch in submission wrestling ability. We will never know the outcome.

Piper could never slam , pile drive or suplex Hogan . He wasnt strong enough. With out Cowboy Bob Orton Jr around piper was aweful. He just had a super loud mouth. I think Honky owns pipers name , or he tried to buy it . 😂
If you look on UA-cam you can find a tag match where Piper working as Piper Machine in 86 slammed John Studd. He did it with authority, it was 86 or early 87. Of course in the early 90's he had his hip replaced. The Body slam was never a big move for Piper.
Piper is a beloved legend for a reason. It's also hilarious that he's crying about him not doing jobs, which is exactly what he did when he one the IC title purely out of being in the right place in the right time, then worked bogus matches for 2 years to keep his spot. To be fair, if I ended up breaking up a lame shoot between Hannibal and Lanny Poffo, I'd be bitter too.
