This was a fun video to do, and I hope you enjoy! Remember to hit like, and subscribe for more! (Also, I made this video while crunching for the end-of-quarter at work, and it's a mistake I'll never make again). Thank you, and take care!

Friend, I’m only three minutes into the video and I’m already very impressed with your production value. I see you’re a small channel now, but something tells me this was the right video at the right time and could explode your channel in the “replace my day job“ kind of way. Liking for the algorithm and I never like videos. I wish you the best of luck

This game to this day wipes the floor with many modern rpgs. If only Capcom believed more in it and gave it more funding, more freedom, more time. The same exact problems the sequel had. I am glad Itsuno left that God forsaken, soulless corporation. He and his team were done dirty. TWICE.

To me this game represents the frustration of never being able to kill death 😂
I cant stress the amount of time death just showed up to ruin my time but it always added an element of stress no matter how much i played the game. I killed everything but death 😓

Grigori was such an awesome antagonist.. and he wasnt even around for 90% of the game.. yet you could feel his influence on the world. From how the goblins that assaulted shadowkeep where spurn into action by the arrival of the dragon, how the people of the world where going crazy, how the other kingdoms wanted to prevent gran soren from claiming another dragon kill, Elysiums cult worshipping the dragon etc. etc.
And then you fight him and its everything you could hope for in an epic bossfight. Compared to him the seneschall fight was VERY underwhelming.
The biggest flaw in dragons dogma 1 is its story DELIVERY... there is a huge and interesting story going on, but for most of the game it feels like the player simply isnt part of it while the real drama goes on behind closed doors.. and you as the player only now and then get a glimpse through a dimly lit window while we march around outside in the rain and mud XD Sadly the sequel has the same issue while cutting heavily into the gameplay.. most likely in an attempt to "streamline" the experience for "modern audiences"... god how i hate these two terms... they never made a game better.
    Sidenote:
The cursed gear from bitterblack isles is only semi random. Its based on the color of your class and your pawns class. So if you and your Pawn both have red (aka warrior) classes, the purification will only produce items wearable by those classes. You will never get a bow for example (a yellow class weapon) if you have 2 warriors. You might however end up with a 1 handed sword or a shield even if you and your pawn are 2-hand warriors
Also i disagree that new game+ is a new cycle in the same world:
When you break the cycle, fall and your pawn takes over your position in the world you are greeted by your "beloved" at the beach. When you start a new game+ however that beloved is nowhere to be seen, infact the entire world has been reseted to the point of the dragons return. New game+ in my opinion is not story or lore relevant in any way or form cause at no time in the game it is aknowledged as such. The dragons dogma is that there allways has to be a seneschall on the throne, allways a dragon and allways a arisen or else the world will die. No one has ever questioned this dogma, until you come along. And from the looks of the world after you unlock the true ending it seems the world isnt dying at all even without a seneschall.. hence why its called a dogma: a rule that is only founded on belief but not on facts.

Grigori was amazing but his undead version to me was just peak tier. I didnt expected to face him and the fact it require everyone online to deal dmg to kill it. Made him feel like the dragon and final boss grigori failed to be.
Even with top gear he takes a lot to solo as well.
I feel grigori should had died half way in the story and the urdragon become the actual final boss. Thus giving more reason to farm the dlc to be able to kill the urdragon.

I prefered the original Grigori showdown XD
The Ur-dragon was a good fight but to me it had to little to do with the plot and world. It was an isolated arena fight that was clearly meant as endgame content without much thought put behind it. Cool setpiece that didnt really fit into the rest that well.

I 100% platted this game back in September, and man, was there highs, lows, and everything in between. But man I fell in love with this game. I first played it in 2018 with the Switch release of DDDA but then played it on PS4 again, then on PC as well and that's when I decided I'd get every trophy for it. 🖤 I regret absolutely nothing though, and I'm hoping that DD2 enraptures me in the exact same way. 😊

bro dd2 is so good. archer is john wick. you can sprint slide into enemies, and there is a ring that makes you do more damage the closer you are. you can chain sprint and light attack repeatedly to slide around, avoid attacks and stagger enemies. it actually takes a bit of skill and timing to do this which makes it even more fun. for large monsters you can go for big oneshots, or bomb them with status effects. best archer gameplay all time, there is no close second

Having played 19 hours of DD2 at the time of watching this, it's very, very interesting to see just how little they pulled away from DD's mechanics and decided to give it a little bit of a trim and a nice coat of polish for the game I'm playing now.
Thank you for breaking down DD so thoroughly. After your analysis of the story, I'm curious to see how DD2 is going to end its story, since it's taking a different approach, but it absolutely seems like it's trying to cover the same themes. Maybe it will answer some of those important unresolved questions from DD, like, "What would happen if I threw my beloved off a cliff before the dragon could?"
Great retrospective, though. That was a wonderful crash course for an uninitiated Arisen like me.

Mug, the more I watch of your work the more you become one of my most *beloved* creators on this site. The care, attention, and thoughtfulness with which you approach the Art within gaming is both edifying and entertaining, and your viewers, including myself, should count them selves lucky to get to enjoy a deep dive retrospective like this one from you.
I only played Dragon’s Dogma myself recently, as when it launched I had spent hours watching all my roomates play and thought I’d had enough just by watching. How wrong I was! I realize now having played and enjoyed your vid that I’d been sleeping on a true treasure.
    😈🤘Thanks for an amazing retrospective!

I played this game a lot. After i was exp enough and had played the game a lot.
The most fun i had was starting a new game going right into the dlc and not leaving the dlc until i beat it. Boy its hard as hell but rewarding.
For new players the best set up you can gave for your party is. Both rented pawn be sorcerer and mage. Your pawn should be a regular sword and shield and you can be whatever.
You never worry about hp or status effects and your pawn will always be attractive to the enemy by banging the shield.
I cant stress how fun and enjoyable it was. It always felt like a mmo d&d game. Specially when pawn are trained in all enemies and stuff. The game feels even more alive due to how many tips clues etc the pawns give up.
My 1 issue with the game is that if you go to the dlc first it is very very likely that the main story becomes a huge breeze. Like i 1 shot to 2 shot everyone.
And daimon weapon collecting was a pain due to rng.
Other than that, voice, story, lore, mechanic, frame, graphics etc are very very very solid.
Sad it took so long for the game to pick up a big fanbase and that the sequel isnt on par with this game.
Lastly theres the japan only mmo version of dragon dogma. Not many outside jp were able to exp it. But people in jp played that game hard core

So, the Dark Arisen DLC takes place in another "dimension" of the Dogma universe. How can you tell? The existence of a moon and eternal nighttime.

    • @emanuelperez3595

It takes place in an island where time flow differently. Like dark souls you could say.
It is cursed due to the arisen there. Time and everything flows different there. As you find the speaking stones they elaborate more in it.
      Its a cursed place basically

Beloved. I purchased dragon's Dogma 2 as soon as it was available, I am pretty excited about this, I am all about these games. Elden Ring and Skyrim are my favourite games but this one is really something quite different. I played the first game but not finished it for some reason but I am certainly going to finish this one even though is quite confusing and it really gets a while to take off I certain in will be very much worth it at the end. I am playing as an archer for now with a lion-person, I really love khajits so it was an easy choice.

    Beloved. SPOILER
You said there's a plothole regarding why pawns have the appearance of their arisen.
In the quest with Selene is explained the concept of bestowal of spirit, which explains why a pawn takes from his arisen, even from his/her appearance,
Selene was the pawn of her "grandmother", the "witch" of the forest, don't remember her name, and she has her appearance from her younger days. It didn't happen suddenly, but after many years, and so did the pawn of the dragonforged, who is also a younger version of him.
But, your pawn and Olra immediatly took the appearance of their respective arisen because they were killed, so the bestowal was "accelerated".
This is the way pawns become progressively human, and that's the goal of their existence, hence why they are fascinated/obsessed by the arisen, and want to serve him/her at all cost, doing so inconciously.
The only thing that doesn't add up, is how could Olra could become Ashe's pawn ? Even though she was supposed to have become human ?
My hypothesis is that Olra isn't really Olra, but a pawn version of the previous Olra, the real one maybe killed by Grette dragon when she came to attack. You see, pawn are created by arisens as a result of their whish, part of their will. Ashe could have wished deeply to get a pawn with the face of his beloved ?
Final remark : Dark arisen wasn't written by the same author than the original game's, so maybe they took this liberty to ensure a better dramatic effect. This is a story that leaves its mark on those who have played the expansion content, with its tragedic aspect being poignant and for many players, unforgettable.
