Your closing beauty shots, stunning. A master at work, there is no doubt. If 2017 is half as good as this model, you will have a fine year. Great work, Boyd, just great.
Hi Boyd....your builds are amazing, Sir! I am currently working on this kit, but one cannot find the supplemental AMT decal set anywhere for purchase these days. I would be interested in buying the remainder of those decals from you, if you do not plan on using them? Let me know if that would be an option. Thanks.
Man, thanks for mentioning the color difference around the 30-minute mark. I'm colorblind and couldn't tell the difference in the movie shots. You saved my build.
It depends, the first thing I want is accuracy. I looked at the various paint masking sets for this ship and none of them were close to what the patterns should look like on this ship. The second thing is the scale. Trying to paint on the intricate panels on a model this small would be a challenge to make them look as perfect as these decals are. Much different then doing that on a 3ft long 1:350 scale Enterprise.
Awesome! Say what do you call these kinds of model works other than the term “Polar Lights” !? Isn’t this ILM kind of work with Detailed window lights and Active Nav beacons ?!
Some day she's going to be Real all of them will be in orbit around Earth and exploring the universe it's our destiny ❤️🙏❤️ God bless star fleet Jesus name amen.
Boyd, that's definitely a build to be proud of. I enjoyed the buildup immensely. Thanks for posting, and I hope to see more of these great Star Trek builds from you in 2017!
I really love it when modelers do their starship models all lit up and everything. Gives me inspiration. I’m considering, but decision not final, of doing a redo model of the Enterprise-B with the lighting to the nacelles and all. Similar way to how Boyd did the Excelsior, Aztec decals, lighting and all (though some of the decals for the Enterprise-B would have to be custom made and printed).
Thank you for sharing this build! I've decided to pull the trigger on building a custom model like this one, but I had one question. In my rush to get all the bells and whistles in after-market parts I realized I don't know what to do with them. I mean when it comes to lighting things like the clear bridge or the structure just behind the engine mount, do you drill into it, or is just masking off the windows and painting it enough to light it up accurately? Thanks!
Hi Boyd this was one fantastic build you out done yourself again I may need to pull my finger out and finish my original pop Excelsior I made A start just need to finish her .
Sir, you are an amazing talent. I have a soft spot for this ship, and you did it the justice I think it deserves. Just absolutely amazing, I'm speachless. Thank you for sharing it with us.
A very nice cap to *my* year! Not sure what you're doing after this! Sitting quietly in the shadows, I imagine. Good show-casing of the Round 2 decals-- remarkable that you could get them all on AND with the ship entirely assembled-- working around the base while up in mid-air must've been easy on the kidneys... Good show, Boyd and looking forward to the New Year!
Absolutely exquisite work, my good sir - I'm definitely excited to make my own now! Glad to see someone who cares about researching and getting all the details right!
Great build Boyd... Enjoyed following your builds... I've learn and continue to learn from each of your video... please keep up the great videos in 2017. Wishing you and your family a Happy, Healthy and prosperous New Year. - Sal
Hey Trekworks just a heads up, only the lighter blue color is used for the Excelsior the darker blue is for the DS9 CGI version of the ship so the Hood, Melbourne and Valley Forge. But you can use the lighter Blue for the Hood because they did use the studio model for the Hood when they made TNG.
Here's a link to a you tube video I used for reference material :ua-cam.com/video/lxhTJ-b7mjw/v-deo.html About 1/2 half way in there are some pics of the studio model and some info about the changes made to it. It's got the darker blue on there along with the different colors and patterns on that horse shoe shape on the saucer top.
Boyd- Excellent work!! amazing job especially with the lighting. Some Points to help other modelers: 1.The RCS thrusters should be off the 90 degres to port and Starboard, they should be just aft of the port and Stbd running lights. 2. Add the 4 red /green running lights on the back of the saucer to ether side of the impulse deck structure. also add the 4 red/green running lights on the top of the secondary hull. 3. Add the white running light on the top of the shuttle bay structure and also the one on the bottom end of the secondary hull. Some white green and Red running blink, some don't. 4. the 2 lights on the front of each nacelles are flood lights to light up the rear saucer and starfleet pennants on the secondary hull. 5. the original idea was that the tops of the nacelles would light up not the wrap around grills them. (that's why they are clear in the kit) only on ST-DSN's CGI models were the grills lit. The Maintenance/Cargo bay detail is still poor and need to be embellished. I have references to support all the above, just contact me. Again amazing work Boyd! I look forward you watching your next video. Live Long and Prosper!
Outstanding effort on this model Boyd! The decals look great your right no way could you airbrush them on any better,i love the blue decals over the pearl white, but if i ever build one i would have to tone the aztecs over the white areas down a little,i would dust a very diluted pearl over them just to knock them back a bit, they would look more in scale for my tastes.
man this is a great build. Im trying my first model in YEARS. thinking the lighting may be a bit beyond me. maybe I should start with just the paint and decals.
Hi Boyd! Excellent Build! I'm not a big fan of "Wall paper" decals on the ships, but these look pretty good. Done an excellent job! For the decals, Friend of mine showed me a way to not get silvered decals, basically he "Floats" them with Future ( or some kind of acrylic gloss if Future not available). Basically you make a "Pool" of future in the place you want the decal to be, then with the decal, you wet it, and slide it off on to the "pool" and then you press your paper towel on it to pick up the extra future like normal. The future acts as glue for the decal, and eliminates the air pockets. This works quite well with decals that have been left in water for too long and have floated off the backing sheet.
this is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. You really did the Excelsior justice, I have a buddy who got the model and if I recall correctly he's planning on making the NX-2000.
I've always loved the Excelsior! Beautiful ship! I don't think I'd have the patience to drill out all of those windows. Now maybe it's just your camera, but the Aztec decals look a bit stark for my tastes...I think subtlety with aztec patterns would suit the small size of this ship better. Still a beauty. And, your lighting work is perfect for this!!
I think AMT did a great job capturing the colors and the patterns of the aztecs that were on the studio model almost exactly. When I do all the work to put them on I want to see them! It's always going to look a little more bold in a smaller scale. I looked around for painting masks but all of the sets I saw were not even close to what the patterns should look like on this ship. They all looked like Enterprise refit patterns.
Understandable. I couldn't imagine trying to pull off and replace masks for that small of an aztec pattern, if they were correct. But if anyone could do it, I'm sure it would be you.
I applied the window decals and used them as a drilling guide and drilled them open with a .5 mm drill bit mounted in a hand held pin vise. Turning the bit by hand works great for doing precise small holes.
Thank you these insightful videos. Question: in which video do you show using a syringe to apply the micro crystal clear to do the windows at the very end?
Well hello my friend this is Emmett.. I've been away for awhile and couldn't get back with you but I'm checking in now with you my friend... and I have two questions I'd like to ask 1 on the Enterprise refit model that you completed was wondering why you did not use the Raytheon lighting for the saucer and the end of the engines where their registry number are ???... and second question,. did they ever come out with a 1/ 350 scale Excelsior..???
Happy New Year Boyd! I must say that I never liked the look of this ship from the moment I saw it on "Search for Spock" and others. That said, you made it look more beautiful than I seem to remember. GREAT WORK my friend!!!!
I'm sorry but I skipped over this detail or don't remember... Did you end up using the kit-supplied neck, OR did you use an after-market piece to support the saucer? Again, I apologize... Sometimes I do fast-forward through videos on UA-cam. Bad habit, I know... It's a legacy of clicking through TV channels during commercials or skipping through the unavoidable preview trailers you stick you with on at least half the DVDs and Blu rays on the home video market... Back on topic... Your build came out very nice! Probably the best advertising Round 2/AMT could get for the new kit AND the decal set!
P.S. -- I'm NOT even a huge fan of the design. I like the original Enterprise-Refit the best. Still, I prefer the "original" Excelsior configuration over the Enterprise-B. I hated the additions they made to the Enterprise-B. The Excelsior was a much sleeker-looking ship even if it DID come off as looking like a whale next to the Enterprise-Refit and Enterprise-A. The darker blue I think looks better on this model than the eggshell-blue you usually see on the Enterprise-B and the later Enterprise-C. Most of the changes made for Star Trek VI were good ones for this model; much better paintjob in Star Trek VI IMHO. The reason why most of the TNG appearances of the Excelsior-class have the original eggshell-blue paintjob is because of course the first three seasons of TNG were "in the can" before Star Trek VI was released in theaters. All the stock footage used of the Excelsior-class in TNG was shot well before Star Trek VI went into production so of course the Excelsior was still in its original Star Trek III configuration with the old paintjob, original bridge, etc. It's only in the 30th anniversary episode of ST: Voyager (the tie-in to Star Trek VI) where you see the Excelsior in its "production"/non-experimental/Star Trek VI configuration after it was modified into an operational vessel. Again, the two pieces that I like better from the NX-2000 are the larger impulse deflection crystal and the original shuttle bay. I felt the twin smaller impulse deflection crystals look a bit dinky and out-of-scale on the saucer dish. I also felt that the original shuttlebay looks better than the revised shuttlebay seen in Star Trek VI. If I got this model, I'd probably stick with the bridge from Star Trek VI which I think looks better BUT build with the original large impulse crystal and the original shuttlebay.
I think they intended the Excelsior to be not well received. It was the jist of the scene between Kirk and Scotty when she was revealed. The design has grown quite popular over time though and I like it myself. And yes the Enterprise B with it's extended sides made it look very bloated and cumbersome looking.
Those two small sqaure sections on the front of the neck ( one on each side ) not everyone knows about are Shuttle Service hangers doors worker bee's use those.
You do the intro's well enough that they should just reuse your audio if Tenna Controls ever DID advertise on radio, Boyd! You've gotten a lot better at these videos over the years... I mean I've probably followed your channel for around a year now but I HAVE seen a lot of the older videos.
TrekWorks hey Boyd I've looked at pictures of the studio model and pictures from the Star Trek 6 and it looks like you may have missed some lights the pictures I have it looks like there are some lights on the top and bottom on the back of the saucer where the impulse engines they look like they line up with the neck area did you see them or were they not there on the studio model ?
I couldn't find any pictures of the top of the ship with the lights on so I went by what I saw in some of the film clips from the movies. I think I worked in most of the lights that were there and for being such a small model I'm happy with how it came out.
TrekWorks Well alright then by the way i've got a modeling question i've CA glueed some 3528 SMD's in my INTO DARKNESS ENTERPRISE and i'd like to add some epoxy glue on top of them for some extra hold i need to know if putting epoxy glue on top of the SMD's will mass them up in anyway can you help me out here ?

Objective opinion here… Excellent build! The craftsmanship is immaculate, as always. But to be honest, the Aztec decals are too heavy and could toned down a bit. The lighting is way too bright, particularly the nacelles and the interiors. That’s no fault of the builder and may be a camera issue, of course. The sounds are cool, but, on a lighting kit of this quality, could certainly be more expansive. I seriously mean no offense, but your work as a builder deserves more than the results this ultimately gave you. It looks as good as it possible for what you have available here. But I personally think it could be even better with the right materials, given your amazing skills.
I'd enjoy your videos more if you would stop talking as much and show more work being done on the model. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy your commentary. But want to see more of the build.
Godspeed my friend. You will be missed. ❤
Indeed
Excelsior was PEAK ship design.
Aye, if my grannie had wheels she’d be a wagon. Beautiful job
Love this! It's incredible how you can make a smaller model look so much larger! Nicely done! I hope you get back to full strength soon 😀
Your closing beauty shots, stunning. A master at work, there is no doubt. If 2017 is half as good as this model, you will have a fine year. Great work, Boyd, just great.
Came out super Boyd Enjoyed watching this build.
Do you have plans sometime in the future to do the NX-2000?
Just Marvelous. Love the sounds. Enjoy the level of detail you share. Just a beautiful build.
A beautiful build of my favorite Federation ship!
Absolutely amazing work...WOW!
Amazing work looks fantastic i couldnt do it once again 👏 perfect
Te quedó Hermosa!!! Que paciencia debes tener para armarla!!!. Te felicito!!!.
Beautyfull, awesome work, i love it 🙂
She looks amazing Boyd! She's looks super sweet and you packed in a lot for the scale being what it is.
Thanks my friend, all that lighting does make the model look bigger than what is.
looks really nice, well done sir

at work so I skipped to the finale :) beautiful ship have to watch the whole thing when I get home. job well done sir :)
Thanks Kenny, I''ll be sending some stuff to you on this one for the MOTY contest. I had to hustle to squeeze in one more ;)
TrekWorks awesome always nice to see more work in the contest thank you for being a part of it.
Q. Which style do you prefer doing...full coverage like these or the multi-masking and painting kind? For Boyd and other modelers.....
It depends, the first thing I want is accuracy. I looked at the various paint masking sets for this ship and none of them were close to what the patterns should look like on this ship. Fantastic Model Mr Crompton.
You are a true Master.
when will you continue on the Bad Azz Galactica?
That is a fantastic build. I like the lighting at the shuttle bay. Great job, Boyd!
she came out really awesome!
Thanks buddy :)

great job , i got those decals too. cant wait to apply them.thanks for the info
Wow! That is beautiful! I picked up this kit today. Probably won't light it, but I'm ordering the Aztec decals right now.
Where did you get that amazing INVADERS UFO sticker?!!! It’s awesome!!!
Boyd- Excellent work!! amazing job especially with the lighting.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a whirl on my next decals.
I got one for Christmas so I'm going to order the decals and start it sometime this March. Thanks for the great build series fantastic as always Boyd!
Miss you Boyd!
Another incredible project
Just curious which light kit you used? I looked on Tenacontrols website but I don’t see one available
Gorgeous
Hey Boyd,
What's the exact type of Pearl White used for the overall finish, and would you recommend that for a 1:350 Enterprise Refit, please?
a other well done starship Boyd good job.
Absolutely awesoooooooooome!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations Boid, great video as always!
Paulo Cabral from Rio de Janeiro
Looks good.

amazing work! my 1701-B is waiting for her buildup. ;-)
my jaw just dropped. great job
Awesome work Boyd!!!
Thank you sir!
Thank you these insightful videos. Question: in which video do you show using a syringe to apply the micro crystal clear to do the windows at the very end?
Awesome job Boyd.

Amazing work!
Absolutely fantastic!!!
I'm also getting this video is not available. On my nexus 7. Works on laptop. I think you may have, by mistake turned off the availability on tablets.
It's probably because of the music at the end. Since it is copy writed it may not be available on some devices.

I used the kit supplied neck. I built this pretty fast and didn't have time to get the aftermarket one.
I think they intended the Excelsior to be not well received. It was the jist of the scene between Kirk and Scotty when she was revealed. The design has grown quite popular over time though and I like it myself. And yes the Enterprise B with it's extended sides made it look very bloated and cumbersome looking.
She looks great Boyd! You've mentioned Duplicolor clear satin in a few other videos, is that what you used here for the final coat?
Yes that is what I used. Luv the stuff!
Those two small sqaure sections on the front of the neck ( one on each side ) not everyone knows about are Shuttle Service hangers doors worker bee's use those.
Great job !
Brilliant.
Something bout the excelsior not a fan of that design but you make models look awesome 👍
To whoever it may concern have you ever built one for somebody and got paid for it for doing it for them and how much do you charge to do one for them
it would be nice if they would just start making bigger models with the windows already punched out that would help a great deal
You do the intro's well enough that they should just reuse your audio if Tenna Controls ever DID advertise on radio, Boyd!
You've gotten a lot better at these videos over the years...
I mean I've probably followed your channel for around a year now but I HAVE seen a lot of the older videos.
Hah! I sure hope so, I've had a lot of practice ;)
Awesome
....VERY NICE>>>VERY NICE....Boyd.....Frank-
What if you wanted to add a name to a ship that isn't part of the decal sheet?
There are folks who will make them for you and also check out JTgraphics.com They have a ton of star trek stuff there for decals, markings etc.
Cool, thanks Boyd.
TrekWorks hey Boyd I've looked at pictures of the studio model and pictures from the Star Trek 6 and it looks like you may have missed some lights the pictures I have it looks like there are some lights on the top and bottom on the back of the saucer where the impulse engines they look like they line up with the neck area did you see them or were they not there on the studio model ?

keep getting "this video is not available"
Neil Barker its too big for the app for some reason
Xander Guldie Iam going to watch it on the desktop version later on but thanks for the reply.
that's a bloody big ship no so big as her captain
My God, that's a big ship. Not so big as her captain, I think.
I'd enjoy your videos more if you would stop talking as much and show more work being done on the model. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy your commentary. But want to see more of the build.
