  • Back again with my full review of the Leatherman Signal
Sorry for rambling, there's so many things to go over in this multi tool
I run through the various features, goods and bads and my overall impression of this survival based multitool.
Thanks for watching and let me know if there's a piece of gear you'd like to see reviewed, I'll see if I can get my hands on it.

This is a fkn fantastic review. You made so many other peoples negative reviews completely redundant. I especially like the point you made about the whistle and preserving your energy and voice. Everybody else calling at 'gimmicky' just parroting one or two reviewers opinions. Subbed!

I can personally vouch for the Signal being a great tool. I owned and loved one for over a year until it fell off my motorcycle and got lost while out on a ride. I used every feature on it and they all performed beautifully

I feel like your dad is now my dad after passing along that piece of wisdom about the tool on you. Loved your add-on perspective that the Signal is designed to get you by in a pinch - not replace the standard tools it replicates. Loved your channel. Gave you a like and sub. Just ordered my Coyote brown Signal. Cheers!

Great content! It’s great that you have a really good idea as to maybe why Leatherman went with certain design decisions. Sometimes, we want something designed differently and we don’t realize the negative impact it would have on the product. Keep it up!

Wow. First video of yours that I've watched. Not only is the content superb, but your video production and editing are exemplary. You were thorough in going over everything on the tool and candid in your remarks. The multi-camera angles worked great. You spoke clearly, crisply and concisely. At first I was a bit put off by all the image insets flying around, swooping in and out, but by the end it seemed great. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!

Been looking into getting this specific Leatherman for my emergency bag, and I'm glad to hear you stress the point that those extras are for when you really need them as they aren't meant to be your "every day use" items. I think however that I may get the Surge as an EDC tool because of the daily tasks I could use it for. Anyways, thanks for this review, it's been really informative hearing your opinions, and I appreciate that you went through every single tool too ✌

Man thank you so much for this video. You cover small details no one else does that affect actual usability and not imaginary use cases that people fantasize about. At a bit past 9 minutes in you mention that the knife won't come out when using pliers and that's exactly the problem I've had with too many multi-tools. I use pliers every day and I've been trying to find a multi-tool with a decent pair of pliers that don't hurt to use so I can lighten my tool bag even just a little bit.

I own the Signal for the philosophy of use you pointed out. It's a survival tool that is always on my person. What's good a tool if it's just at home on the bench? Like to have that peace of mind that I have this multitool on my person if I were ever to wake up randomly in the wilderness. The Signal to me is like a survival version of the Skeletool. My most used tools are the blade, pliers/cutters, screwdriver, and bottle opener on the Signal as well as the Skeletool. Anyways, this is the best review of the Leatherman Signal I've seen on UA-cam. I've watched this video twice today already and have ordered myself the Black and Silver edition of the Signal with an engraving. Great job on this video editing. Very entertaining! 😁

I think the Signal and Raptor Rescue would be perfect together. They don’t overlap in tools. The signal provides most of your survival tools while the Raptor provides the folding EMT shears which you can use for medical emergencies (cutting clothes, gauze, bandages, etc). Great wilderness combo!

Great review, very informative and entertaining at the same time. I just ordered the turquoise/black model from REI with my 20% member discount (turquoise because I live in New Mexico?). I do a lot of day hiking and so many times I manage to forget to bring either a fire starter or whistle (mainly for summoning the dog). This seems to be a good choice for my outings, I'll probably pair it with a SAK that has scissors, tweezers, smaller blade, etc. Another grooming use for the pliers (esp. as you get older): plucking nose hairs.

Your review sealed the deal for me getting the signal. I’ve considered one for a long time. Ended up with the SURGE. Absolutely could not pocket carry it. To heavy. Pouch carry, not feasible do to my trade.
I spend time in the woods and need a good plier for the job as well. A much better pocket clip than the wave+ and surge. The free P4 wouldn’t work do the magnetic closer collecting metal shavings on the job. Good mix of both. The secondary hex bit hole will absolutely pay itself off for me. Again. Thank you. Have a good one.

I mainly got mine for the carabiner, so I can just clip it to my belt loop on my jeans. I fix air conditioners for a living, so the saw I mainly use for cutting holes in sheetrock, but the pliers, wire cutters, and knife are the tools I use the most. I got the green topo version because it matches my green Benchmade Osborne 940 knife.

Didn't shave but it was damn close. The guy who lost it took pretty good care of it besides for using it as a screwdriver.

A lot of knives are overbuilt. Thickness behind the edge can really jam the knife in the material, especially if it's rubber or something similar. 4mm thick is just about the limit of usefullness if the overall geometry is good. Most thicker knives are basically splitting wedges, like Becker BK2 (6mm) and Busse (6.65 mm) to name a few.

I'm thinking about picking one of these up as a backup to what I usually have in my backpacking kit. I would definitely not want to rely on that as a primary for anything, but as something to stick in a pocket and otherwise forget about until disaster strikes on the trail? It might be great for that.

  • @Phlfwlr

Cool review. I completely agree with you. It should not be your first choice for most of the tools, but it’s definitely better than not having it. I think really the only gimmicky tools are the whistle, ferro rod and sharpener. And you can definitely still use them. Everything else I could use pretty frequently on the day to day. Also the hammer is a big win for me. Ive found a lot of scenarios where I needed to use some kind of hammering tool that my palm couldn’t handle and this eliminates that. As far as the awl goes you could use it on things you probably wouldn’t want to use the tip of your blade on. And I’m glad you pointed out the beard hair pulling because I too struggle with that at times lol

Hey thanks for watching man. I did alot of SERE training back in the day. One of the things they trained us on was the efficiency of using a whistle to call for help vs your voice. 1 yelling fatigues you as well as gradually dehydrates you via moisture leaving your mouth as you yell. It also the sound of a human voice does not carry in the air as far as whistle. It may be something that I never have t use but I'm really glad I have it.

    • @tor2919
      @tor2919 Рік тому

A whistle is in no way a gimmick. It’s one of the most important things to have if you’re outdoors with any chance of getting lost.

Picked one up today from a REI in a nice dark green color. The Leatherman site doesn't list it as having this color available. It's my second - My first is a Kick from... 2004 or so. It's green and stainless steel. It only has about six tools on it compared to the 18 or so the Signal provides. I don't want the Kick to get ruined from me... Continuing to use it. As far as I'm concerned these things are immortal. I'll pick up the titanium Charge or a Surge at a later date. I liked the video, too. Not mall ninja-y or annoying.

Ale best with a hole : to saw -even with strings !!
Very useful the more You remember it, so use it often.
(For instance last week I used to drill an additional hole in a belt (later to be punched out around).

Hey thank you so much! So far it's been pretty robust but I haven't thrown a ton of heavy work at it. The body is made of stamped steel and the tools are all high grade tool steel. I'd be a little warry of smacking the sharpener against anything while it was attached to the main body of the tool.
