I've been a blaster and demo man for nearly 50 years, and this is a greatly versatile tool for both. In a pinch, the carbon scraper works as a safety compliant powder knife and emulsion package punch. The cap crimper is still of value for us old-timers who work underground (not as much on surface blasting as most initiating systems make cap and fuse obsolete). Still, for wiring electric and electronic initiating systems, this is a hard tool to beat. Now if I can just keep the miners from stealing it. Happily, I can keep my fire arms in good firing order with this tool also, so they aren't as tempted! Excellent video!
First, great video! No vanity B.S. Not one minute of my time wasted. Nothing but solid, salient info on this device. Thank you very, very much. Second, FYI, I was a Force Recon operator, circa 80s and 90s, and imagined a Leatherman like this with the crimpers and C-4 punch. So glad they finally did it. Not only EOD uses demolitions. Combat engineers, grunts and special operators do, too. All we used to have were the issue non-electric demo-tools: Imagine a standard pliers size tool with a crimper for jaws and a punch on the end of one of the handles. Fine if doing rear area work. Not fine for an operator for whom size, weight and accessibility are life and death. Love this thing.
Thank you very much for your practical insight. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. I made another one you might be interested in. It was my take on the feasibility of making a military themed tool, but using the Surge as the base platform. I would love to hear your thoughts. Edit: Link ua-cam.com/video/D9kSPZd8erU/v-deo.html
I carry one of these every day at work in public safety comm security. I use the C4 punch to mark cable spots in something soft like a wood mount, the saw to cut thru LDF4-50 shielding, the knife to clean it up, and the brass scraper to finish it. The rest is just cool (and useful for my weapons that I happened to have recently lost in a lake). I know I'm late to the video, just thought I'd offer a non-military use perspective.
I bought this by accident thinking it was a regular MUT. Couldn’t return it because it had a few scratches even though I didn’t use it. WATCH WHAT YOU BUY! Now I bought the punch for it. Im gonna replace the pliers because the blasting cap crimpers are useless for my occupation. If you have tips for how I can get replacement pliers please let me know. Thank you.
I have 3 of the Leatherman MUT EOD MultiTools and use this Tools almost daily in a Shooting Range Gun Club, Electronics laboratory,IOT lab,Camping ,Hiking and Fieldcraft Etc. Thank you for informative videos.
I just found one of these in Canada and pulled the trigger, I didn’t need the eod I get by with my regular mut but I had to have it and $8 cheaper then on the leatherman site…. And available in Canada
Another good analysis. Thank you. Not a big fan of loose handles on the EOD. Are the handles loose on your regular MUT? Not many MTs require a latch. I'd like to see a kit with interchangeable plastic pieces to add the C4 spike to the regular MUT since the plastic trim is thicker with the AR disassembly punch.
Thank you. The handles on the MUT are not super loose, but I can see why they added the catch. I probably wouldn't use it at all myself, if this were the multi tool I EDC'd. It would be nice if the plastic components interchanged though.
Sorry to ask, but what does the EOD lettering stand for. I've been coming across this on one other occasion where one changed his Leatherman Surge wire cutters to the EOD wire cutters after some changes . But I never understood the meaning of EOD.
This is my first time listening to your channel and I love how in-depth you go especially because how much I would spend on this tool. You also briefly cover the other version of the mut because that’s the one I’m interested in and I feel like I’m literally watching a review for the other MUT.
Adam Lee My MUT did, but I bought it when they came out and the sheath may be different. Mine has two pockets for the bit holders behind Velcro as well as the main one for the tool and one on the outside in the back I keep the wrench in.
The Signal will fit the Surge pouch with the pockets. It comes with the no-pocket nylon sheath, but you can easily get the pocketed nylon sheath for it.
About the pouch. A little note as I carried this boy for a good while. There is actually two pockets for thr bit sleeves, try to push it into the slot next to it, and youll see. Additionally, the sight toos is potentially a weak spot as it rubs around that area where the metal button is and I have removed it from there for that reason, aside from it being a good pain in the ass to actually insert when the seath is actually attached to my vest. The pouch for this guy doesnt seem to be engineered with use in mind, as i think most service memebers would probably use something else, and perhaps Leatherman knew it, since the WAVE seaths are considerably better engineered. I use a taco pouch for my leatherman now, and keep all the bit sleeves and extender in different places-depending on what I carry.
Thank you for giving us a detailed account of your experience. I have heard a lot of people recommend the Taco pouches. I guess I'm just going to have to get one for myself.
It is rediculous. My Surge and 300 ST are good enough. Ohhh, and my Charge and my Gerber Dual Force and my Centerline Ohhh, I forgot about my Wave and 2 Rebars.

@@txtoolcrib Been a little busy. Got around to the other video and left a comment. Thanks again!

Thanks for your sharing your experiences. I could see where that tool would work well in those applications.
I have been using this overseas with the 75th Ranger Regiment for several years. It's gotten me and my team out of a pinch on multiple occasions.
I'll take $500 bucks on "Shit that isn't Happening Right Now"
The Mut EOD should have had the T- shank adapter to be able to use a saw or a file stored in the pouch. Almost perfect tool
The C-4 punch can undo knots great.
I can see that.
An otherwise useless SAK corkscrew is good for knots too 👍

My relatively early MUT EOD BO does indeed have a Ti alloy clip that is not blacked out.
That's what I was thinking. That is actually a bit disappointing.
The cap crimper is a standard size for all conventional Detonator and blast cap.

So begins my my quest for a double ended leatherman wrench. Great content! Thank you
You’re welcome, thank you for taking the time to watch.
Just got mine at a market with an Amazon special belt carrier for 100$, pretty stoked about it.
I believe the surge has a stranded wire cutter under the
Pliers in between the handles

Leatherman videos are the best 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks.
Excellent! I have one. I think Leatherman couldn’t improve this model. I have standard AR platform.
Lol, when I was in the Navy we always had that one EOD guy with crazy ideas. This is probably that crazy guys EDC.
Lol, yeah this one is not for everyone.

great video, do you think you can remove the carbon scraper or the punch, and brown part under it and put on the center drive from Gerber?
Just curious...Can you fit leatherman mut saw blade replacing surge cerrated blade?
They did have the ti clip
Correct. My MUT EOD has an titanium clip
Can you show us in the next video, how to sharp the blade and which tool you use ?
I will try to get to it. I use Wicked Edge.

If you really wanted to you could grind the cutter to fit the surge.
You could indeed. If you trust yourself enough.
I will buy this someday.
Nice review! Are the bits included in the standard packaging?
Yes.
I have a leatherman mut but its missing pieces how do I get replacements
Great, thorough review. Thank you.

Yes
Leatherman Question for those in the know
Do any of the mutt or signal pouches have a separate rear slot like the surge pouch?
Cheers folks
