Ryan Zhang the reason the keyboard isn't included is because there's a bunch of different colors for the keyboard but only one for the surface itself. This makes it easier to not run out of stock and whatnot.

Such amazing devices but their marketing strategies just really puts you off from buying them.
That's the whole point, they want you to want them. The plan is to set the standard for the other hardware makers. In a few months, you are going to see computers that offer everything you want for a cheaper price than the surface pro (2015) ;)

I disagree I think each device hits a different category. For those who want the "traditional Laptop" experience there's the Surface Laptop. For those who like using the Pen- artists, students, etc. The Surface Pro is a much better option. The Laptop doesn't have a good "writing experience". The Surface Pro is more those value mobility above all else.... The Surfacebook is the more premium device, whereas the Studio is the ultimate creators device. They each have their place, it just depends on what you prefer in terms of input method. If you use the pen Surface Pro and Book are your options. If you want the traditional laptop then the Surface Laptop is your thing. I prefer the Pro myself. I currently own a SURFACE 3 that I use everyday for work and it does a great job. The Surface Pro will be a great upgrade when I'm ready to purchase.
You would need to carry around your Surface charger if you wanted to charge all of your USB C devices. A normal phone charger won't be anywhere near powerful enough. It is the same situation for the Nintendo Switch. You can't use most battery banks to charge it because the Switch needs more juice.

I travel overseas a lot and I like to travel as light as possible. I bought the top of the line Surface Pro 4 a few days after Christmas 2015. It is by far my favorite asset. I cannot imagine my chaotic life without it.
The Surface Pro has been the best option for me as an illustrator and frequent writer and note-taker. The Laptop is awkward to write and draw on. The Studio is very expensive and not portable. And the Book is slightly more expensive, less easier to carry around, and harder to write on (with keyboard attached). So that's who the Surface Pro line is for: an artist or writer on the go with a decent budget.
My Surace Pro 3 was my best purchase for college. Small, compact, one note is excellent. I would keep the keyboard off and take pictures of slides, long math problems, and write all over them. When I got home I have a dock powering 2 1080p screens a keyboard and mouse. Today my surface pro 3 is still running strong with zero issues. Great purchase for students, and useful for the business man who wants portability and power.
Mingo To compare the ipad pro to the surface pro is pointeless, one's a tablet, one's a laptop (no one is going to a surface pro without a type cover). It would be fairer to campare the Surface pro to Wacom's mobile studio pro.
I'm surprised that Microsoft let you do this really unbiased and open impression of their products. That's solid. And also thumbs up for you, this seemed like a really honest opinion with lots of well thought pros and cons at the same time. Thanks.
Changiz K Baluch Did you just say that? Because all I see is people saying" the iPad Pro is better", "the Surface Pro sucks", "it doesn't come with the pencil so it sucks", "it doesn't have USB-C so it sucks".
Hi I've used graphics tablets for the past 14 years. To everyone complaining about the added price of the pen, it is vastly improved upon the previous stylus. it actually rivals top end Wacom devices which is an incredible step in the right direction for people using this device for artwork. Again when it comes to the keyboard, a lot of people using this for art want something they can hold in their hands, and possibly just use a Bluetooth keyboard with. These are extras, that not everybody will need, so they don't need to come in the box.
Having a tablet is really convenient in a lot of situations. It's just a lot more versatile and I've found myself using the Surface Pro in a lot of places (standing up while teaching, sitting on the bus, relaxing in bed, etc.) where a traditional laptop would be downright awkward.
Don't you dare say that Surface Pro doesn't belong anywhere. Microsoft got here because of all the people that WANT this product! I for one don't see the point of the Surface Laptop when there's the much better product out there.. the Surface Pro !
Hey Austin, at 3:09 you say the keyboard cover is made of (or feels like?) Alcantara. I hate to burst your bubble, but that material is just ultrasuede. Alcantara is literally just a name for ultrasuede the Italians came up with to make their cars sound more sophisticated. Just wanted to make sure you're properly informed!
Hi Austin, I have a Surface 3 (non pro) and a Surface Book. I use them for note-taking as tablets with the pen and as laptops for essay work or long reports. I use them as either for Skype, browsing and other lighter tasks depending on the situation. I have never liked laptops as flexibility is the most important thing to me, and if I want a comfortable keyboard, mouse and display in a relatively inflexible design I will always go for the greater power per £ of a desktop. If I need mobility, I want full mobility, not only when I am sat down or at a table/ desk. That is where Surface Pro and Book stand compared to the laptop, for people who value flexibility on the go.
For students in secondary school, I would recommend the Surface Laptop as it is stylish and has Windows 10 S which prevents you from running .exe files which helps avoid getting viruses on your laptop. For students in university and college or someone just looking for a good, solid laptop, I would recommend the new Surface Pro because it doesn't come with Windows 10 S so it can run applications that you might need for your course. It has good specs and a good design. I personally, am getting the new Surface Pro.
I have a surface pro 4 and I'd have to say that these models (the tablet laptop things) are perfectly geared towards students. At school in class, I take the keyboard off and handwrite my notes with onenote, I get the handwritten note experience (also saves paper when teachers provide handouts, I can write on them in onenote) while also storing everything on my computer without carrying a ton of weight. I use the keyboard when typing obviously, but I also love to detach it and just watch youtube when I am at home. It's the best investment I've made.
"I don't know who should be picking one up...." ME! I picked up about thirty Surface Pro 4's for some of our executives in my office and they love them.
Geez stop whinging about the keyboard and pen not being included. Just add the cost on when you purchase. Surely that's not too difficult. The reason they have them separate is because there's a range of colours to choose from. It's not the end of the world. Also, the improvements all round are actually quite substantial for people who want these devices - much longer battery life, much much better pen, and LTE support. A really good upgrade all round. You really show how out of touch you are when you say that you're not sure who Surface Pro is for. Surface Pro makes up 70% of all Surface devices sold, so evidently it's still the most popular form factor.
It's a refresh people with Kaby Lake processor, longer battery life, better tilt mechanism and same base price as last gen. The surface pen probably had the most change with tilt support and more than 4000 points of pressure. I can understand why they didn't include the surface pen. If USB-C is not on the newer model (Pro 5?) then that's different. I'm not a fanboy, just stating the facts.
It's a laptop. Always has been. Nobody complains that we call desktop computers computers even though they don't come with monitors. You can't use a desktop computer without a monitor, can you? Just like a desktop, the surface allows you to choose your keyboard. Already have a keyboard? Guess what..you can use it. Rather have a separate Bluetooth keyboard? Guess what, you don't have to pay for the Surface keyboard cover unless you want one. Rather use the pen and the onscreen keyboard when mobile and an ergonomic keyboard when you're at your desk. You get the idea. After 4 generations it's time to retire that old song and dance (:
I love my surface pro 4, with a M3 processor and 4gb of ram and it's surprisingly very powerful, I've pushed it pretty hard and never had any issues, my old laptop had a core i7 and 8gb of ddr4 and my surface eats it, even when gaming it out performs, there's more power than people realise
I love the MacBook Pro's keyboard, it barely has any travel but it's so clicky and satisfying, I don't know why people hate on it, I'd take it over the surface keyboard any day.
I'm living in the past along with everything I will plug into the new SP. Had my wireless mouse, external hard drives, etc etc been USBC now I'd be outraged. But nope none of them are.
YuiHirasawa I might be living in the past but in every electronics store that I've been in I've seen that 95% of all computer accessories are "living in the past" soooooooo... I was happy when they removed the optical drive because I never used it and it just took away internal space, but I use the "prehistoric" USB-A connector everyday.
I think what I like about the Surface line is that they've developed it into a "what's best for you?" product. If you just want a regular laptop, get a Surface Laptop. If you want a tablet that can also be your main PC, then get a Surface Pro. Need a high-end laptop that can also be a tablet on the occasion you need it? Get a Surface Book. Graphics designer who needs everything regardless of cost? Surface Studio, for you. I think its s good strategy. Give options, but make them fairly clear categories, yet still with crossover between them. My opinion, of course!
THANK YOU FOR STATING WHAT THE VERSION OF CPU WAS INCLUDED. You literally are the only one that stated this. I hate when they market only i5 or i7 processors. PS: Sorry for caps, I was just really thankful.
Hi, I really like your videos man awesome job, a small thought regarding your thumbnails is that when I go to my subscriptions page and start opening all the videos I want to watch (and every time you upload one I watch it) a lot of times I just skip over yours because there's no like symbol or something to pop up and just click on it. hope this is helpful, keep up the awesome work
The tablet has more potential than you think for many people, including, but far from only creatives, architects, musicians, note takers, students and any people that can use the pen. Its diminutive size make it a fantastic business laptop, very light and transportable in small business bag. And yes, with the type cover you can work almost anywhere in almost every situation, which is not the case of most bigger laptops, including on coach flights. Having worked many years with the SP3, I can attest this is an advantage you'll enjoy every day, and I took it over my (equally fantastic but in other ways) Dell XPS 15 whenever I could. The biggest drawback is of course the total price that is very expensive (tablet+keyboard+pen), and the ports where one USB type C, at least 3.1 or thunderbolt 3, would be appreciated, including from musicians. IMO, a new Surface tablet with a 13,5" screen would have been more interesting, as it would have offered an alternative to people needing/wanting bigger screen, while still being able to fully benefit from a pen and touch enabled device: I don't know that it will be that useable on the Surface Laptop, which, as far as I know, can't open 180¨to have the monitor flat on a table.
In the IT space a lot of my clients use the Surface Pro, it was so popular that they were sold out when they first came out and companies were running to the vendors to see if any of us had them in stock. Still popular, so if you're a home user, yes the Ipad might be a great option. But with Windows 10 Pro on the latest Surface Pro, it's all businesses need to keep their MDM locked down.
So I know Austin won't see this but if anyone scrolling through the comments comes across this, my argument for the surface pro is that it's perfect for school and most office work. The pen makes note taking almost fun, and the design makes it almost look like a high quality notepad. I currently use the surface pro 3 for school, and it's amazing
I had some thought time choosing between Surface laptop and Pro. In the end, I have preordered them both. Surface pro for note taking (I use OneNote a lot!), sketching, on the go performance and some programs that are not available on Win 10S. And Surface Laptop for office work, main typing machine, browsing etc
The Surface line is actually really well thought out. There is not a single device from any company that is 50% laptop 50% tablet perfectly, and even if there is physically one, either side of the experience would not be ideal (because the perfect tablet experience will only exist on a device that is 100% tablet and vice versa for laptops), so it is physically and conceptually impossible to build such a device. And Microsoft, the company who invented this convertible category, recognize it. So what they are doing is to have Surface Pro to be 70% tablet% 30 laptop and the Surface Book to be 70% laptop and 30% tablet, instead of trying to get the impossible balance as explained in the previous paragraph. The entire line up is now looking like: Surface Studio - Desktop Surface Laptop - Laptop Surface Pro - 70% Tablet 30% Laptop Surface Book - 70% Laptop 30% Tablet The only thing missing is mobile, in the form of the tablet or a phone, or a foldable, which is what Surface Phone is supposed to be. It would not make sense to build a pure tablet in Microsoft's eyes because 1. tablet is dead (except iPad) 2. windows is not a 100% tablet os.
I seriously love my Surface pro 4 it's a must have as a university student imo, because it makes taking notes and stuff a lot easier and cleaner. I really enjoy using it, even for media consumption even though the aspect ratio of it is 3:2
i still bought the surface pro, yes, i spent 1200 pounds for a surface pro i5 8 gb ram 128 gb ssd with type cover and pen, i just love how the surface works, also. MICROSD!!! no more need to find an converter (card dongle) so, just right in the SDHC port
My Lord! If it had Thunderbolt, that would be part of my dream setup, just get a Razer Core, GTX 1060, LG 4K Monitor, MX Master 2S, Razer Chroma TE, Sony H.ear ON, Xbox One X, you know things like that, it'd be epic!
Austin, if you are not sure who would pick up a surface pro versus a traditional laptop, you should talk to millions of people who made that decision for various reasons. I know there are many professionals who like the portability and versatility of the surface pro compared to a traditional laptop. I myself don't use a surface pro, but I know many people who prefer the surface pro. I think a lot of tech reviewers fail to see other use cases because they think that everyone's workflow only includes things like word documents, video editing, and spreadsheets. There are many professionals and students who need other capabilities from their devices, and the surface pro delivers there.
Personally, I'd like to see the new Surfaces come with the option of downgrading to Windows 8.1. I think 8.1 is more appropriate operating system for a tablet than Windows 10. Would also be cool if they released a variant of the Surface that had CD slot.
I have the surface pro 4 and I use it more than my laptop for everyday tasks with school. It can process all of my programs and runs visual studio very smoothly. It's so compact I just throw it in my backpack and it adds almost no weight. I'll probably get the new one for myself and pass on my old one to my sister.
The surface pro line is actually pretty useful for my studies. The lack of kickstands on the other products diminish the writing/drawing experience. However to not include the stylus and the keyboard is not a great move.
my current device is a 2 in 1 laptop and I use it quite often in tablet mode. I picture myself picking up a surface pro in the future if they don't kill the product . Not including USB C was a bad move for this gen IMO. I will wait for next gen.
I think that the surface pro series is the best choice for students because it is a full laptop and just if flip the keyboard and holding the device in vertical way it changes to tablet and you can read PDFs and DOCs and write on them more comfortably
I have a pro4 and am not upgrading, but love this new one. It is an actual surface, unlike the surface laptop witch doesn't follow what the surface name is. The surface name is a tablet that can replace your laptop (or PC).
I think you did an excellent job with this video. Considering you were at some Microsoft event, you did not schmooze them. Sounds like you told it like it is - the good and the bad and you covered pretty much all the bases. BTW - I really appreciate that you mentioned about the fan less version with an i5 processor. I have become a fan less 'fan'. I simply do not want to go back to any laptop/desktop/tablet hybrid with a fan again (so much so that I have a fanless desktop PC). Again, great review, imo.
I don't agree with the decision to ditch the pen as standard, to me, the surface pro will always be the best device for college/University students. I had the original one and it was awesome for day to day tasks and note taking. It really does make more sense than a laptop if you have anything that needs to be handwritten.
I find that the surface pro fits in perfect for me. I still like to use my MacBook for most heavy tasks. But for sitting on the couch to browse or watch Netflix I use my surface pro everyday over the iPad. For the single reason that it runs a full operating system
Looks like a fairly nice upgrade to an already great product, but the lack of Thunderbolt 3 kind of kills it for me. Think I'll just get the Surface Pro 4 with a nice price cut.
Microsoft invited you to Shanghai, but this video doesn't seem to be like a promotional video. You gave your honest opinion and while it looks kinda weird at first, i think Microsoft is trying be more open to feedback and that's good. Hope to see more videos like this where i see more UA-camrs give their honest opinions.
Surface devices don't disappoint. The only thing that seems to disappoint is its price point. Who should pick up the surface pro? A doctor who's on the move should definitely pick this up. Allows for user when seeing patients in the ward and then when seated at a desk in the clinic or at the library
I like the ports. I don't have a single solitary USB C device or cable. I do have tons of USB A, display port. USB C would simply mean I need a number of adapters and to carry at least one at all times, and that's probably true for most people. Nearly everything I would plug into this has a USB A.
I'm definitely sold. At this point in life, my PC use cases suggests I can probably get away with an m3 SP4 but my ego might make me wait to see what the SP5 i5 LTE is priced at. People argue about what a SP is but whatever it is I like it. I have an SP3 for work and I love the flexibility between handwritten notes, typed noted, and tablet-like browsing. It's not the best tablet experience but it does come in handy when i just want to relax and read or casually surf the web.
"It's not a tablet, it's a laptop -- keyboard not included"
Ryan Zhang the keyboard not included kinda makes it a tablet
Ryan Zhang the reason the keyboard isn't included is because there's a bunch of different colors for the keyboard but only one for the surface itself. This makes it easier to not run out of stock and whatnot.
Ryan Zhang I've never heard anybody call it this, but I call it the tabtop
I call it the laplet

good joke singhaling
Lmao, if you reply it 2 times it actually sound like it
what if that's what he's been saying all this time.
It's not 2014 anymore.
LOL
I love my SP4 because it can become a tablet, which is amazing for taking handwritten notes in class, and the cover can just fold back.
it comes with the keyboard?
Onfe It can become a Laptop but I just don't find Windows pleasing to use as a Laptop. Most programs where not designed with touch in mind, and I have yet to find a good note taking app. Neither PDF annotator nor OneNote are really good.

BrewNCode unfortunately not, yet most stores in the U.K. Sell it as a bundle with the keyboard. I picked up a surface and type cover used on eBay.
WuschelofDespair I can recommend drawboardPDF for note taking, I've found it works great for filling out pdf's and exam papers
are you in college or high school

Game Domain I'm pretty sure he has. not sure
i want my father to come back, personally.

dont buy unless you plan to use it for school...
surfaces arent designed for gaming,
theyre designed for students

I always had a hard time knowing what was what with the Apple stuff... Wish they could just all keep with the numbering. It's already hard enough to search for specific models.
Skinipinis lol yeah that was so confusing when they released the Titan Xp, took a while to find charts to compare the Titan X(p) with Titan Xp and realize they actually did make something new :D

The Laptop is awkward to write and draw on. The Studio is very expensive and not portable. And the Book is slightly more expensive, less easier to carry around, and harder to write on (with keyboard attached).
So that's who the Surface Pro line is for: an artist or writer on the go with a decent budget.
What I don't like is.. the *Wallpaper*.
women lol you can change it, honey.
Bill Pii I think you just got r/woooosh-ed
My Surace Pro 3 was my best purchase for college. Small, compact, one note is excellent. I would keep the keyboard off and take pictures of slides, long math problems, and write all over them. When I got home I have a dock powering 2 1080p screens a keyboard and mouse. Today my surface pro 3 is still running strong with zero issues. Great purchase for students, and useful for the business man who wants portability and power.
After your joke about the iPad Pro, can you make a iPad Pro vs. Surface ? Maybe after the iPad Pro Update!
Mingo To compare the ipad pro to the surface pro is pointeless, one's a tablet, one's a laptop (no one is going to a surface pro without a type cover). It would be fairer to campare the Surface pro to Wacom's mobile studio pro.
Surface Pro is a 2-In-1 device (hybride), not just laptop.
I'm surprised that Microsoft let you do this really unbiased and open impression of their products. That's solid. And also thumbs up for you, this seemed like a really honest opinion with lots of well thought pros and cons at the same time. Thanks.
Apple Pencil doesn't come with iPad and cost $99, people lose their shit. Surface pen $99 and doesn't come with the pen. Cricket...
Changiz K Baluch Did you just say that? Because all I see is people saying" the iPad Pro is better", "the Surface Pro sucks", "it doesn't come with the pencil so it sucks", "it doesn't have USB-C so it sucks".
Changiz K Baluch your an idiot, have you not seen anyone's opinion apart from your own. Stupid apple fanboys.
I think the Surface Pen is better than iPad's Pen, especially in precision.
you think but it's actually not apple pen is way better than surface pen
Ding Ding why
Hi I've used graphics tablets for the past 14 years. To everyone complaining about the added price of the pen, it is vastly improved upon the previous stylus. it actually rivals top end Wacom devices which is an incredible step in the right direction for people using this device for artwork. Again when it comes to the keyboard, a lot of people using this for art want something they can hold in their hands, and possibly just use a Bluetooth keyboard with. These are extras, that not everybody will need, so they don't need to come in the box.
Is the processor inside the headphone jack
Austin loves apple stuff, to be fair he was prob a bit unsure what that hole was for.
Austin, your videos are awesome. 2nd favorite youtuber of 2017
0:28 that chuckle --apple got rekt
Who has the surface 4?
me, though im selling it for a macbook air
Ngl it sucks after the bug that messed up the screen
Hah....no one in middle school..or “secondary school” can afford an at least 899$ laptop
Austin has done incredibly well for himself, a good role model I think.
Wenger Out
Dharmil Doshi wenger out
Dharmil Doshi wenger in
😂
Maybe in 2 seasons pal
I'm a United fan we all want wenger in
Here I am with my Lenovo Miix 510 since I couldn't be bothered to wait for this thing. Then again, I don't think I'm missing much.
Not worth upgrading from my Surface Pro 4
Thank you for actually roasting this and not handling this like an ad since they flew you all the way out there...
Does it run windows 10 S-tupid edition?
Lukas Foukal Nope. Windows 10 Pro.
*Cough* ports *Cough*
I have a surface pro 4 and I'd have to say that these models (the tablet laptop things) are perfectly geared towards students. At school in class, I take the keyboard off and handwrite my notes with onenote, I get the handwritten note experience (also saves paper when teachers provide handouts, I can write on them in onenote) while also storing everything on my computer without carrying a ton of weight. I use the keyboard when typing obviously, but I also love to detach it and just watch youtube when I am at home. It's the best investment I've made.
1:45 New Surface Laptop looks waaaayyy better.
NOSfusion t
After 4 generations it's time to retire that old song and dance (:
that made no sense at all.
Wtf was that
Laptops usually comewith keyboard buddy
I actually really like the keyboard on the 2016 MacBook Pro. It feels much sturdier, clickier, and nicer than the 2015 one and most other laptops.
*Installs wannacry ransomware*
Wannacry is over for the most part, all versions of Windows from XP to 10 Creators Update has a patch for it
Princesses Are Awesome WannaCry will not work on the Surface Pro 2017
4:43 The moment you can't find a way to make things better is the moment you have perfected it.
i saw 安全出口😂😂
Eric JH Li cause it's in Shanghai
I love my surface pro 4, with a M3 processor and 4gb of ram and it's surprisingly very powerful, I've pushed it pretty hard and never had any issues, my old laptop had a core i7 and 8gb of ddr4 and my surface eats it, even when gaming it out performs, there's more power than people realise
I love the MacBook Pro's keyboard, it barely has any travel but it's so clicky and satisfying, I don't know why people hate on it, I'd take it over the surface keyboard any day.
Sfad Hjkl it's opinion based, I hate the mac keyboard, but that's just me
At a cinematic 24 fps: "Hey cinema, this is Austin."
Thank god that they didn't put that stupid USB-C connector!
ImpiantoFacile You are living in the past. They need to remove those old ports as soon as possible .
ImpiantoFacile What's so bad about usb-c?
I'm living in the past along with everything I will plug into the new SP. Had my wireless mouse, external hard drives, etc etc been USBC now I'd be outraged. But nope none of them are.
YuiHirasawa satire. you don't get it.

Hey Guys,this is autism.
Yee
Y'all remember the "I really want a surface pro 3" around Christmas time a few years ago?
"but what cool about this" Austin every video lately
Love it! Think it is now a really mature product and I am picking one
The entire line up is now looking like:
Surface Studio - Desktop
Surface Laptop - Laptop
Surface Pro - 70% Tablet 30% Laptop
Surface Book - 70% Laptop 30% Tablet
The only thing missing is mobile, in the form of the tablet or a phone, or a foldable, which is what Surface Phone is supposed to be. It would not make sense to build a pure tablet in Microsoft's eyes because 1. tablet is dead (except iPad) 2. windows is not a 100% tablet os.
Ill wait for the inedible "Buy a Surface Pro, get a free surface pen or type cover" deal they usually pull around Black Friday.
"Not like this is going to be a loud device to begin with"
Have you heard the fans on the surface pro 4 i7? They ramp up simply when using chrome.
I seriously love my Surface pro 4 it's a must have as a university student imo, because it makes taking notes and stuff a lot easier and cleaner. I really enjoy using it, even for media consumption even though the aspect ratio of it is 3:2
Last surface pro was supposed to have 9 hours of battery but ended up with 5. That's what I want to see when it comes out
i still bought the surface pro, yes, i spent 1200 pounds for a surface pro i5 8 gb ram 128 gb ssd with type cover and pen, i just love how the surface works, also. MICROSD!!! no more need to find an converter (card dongle) so, just right in the SDHC port
I love my surface pro 3 so much. I had it for three years and it's amazing. It does the job
Do you still have it or better to upgrade to sp5?
I am happy that he tells me that i am watching Austin Evans, or else i might be watching TLD
The surface name is a tablet that can replace your laptop (or PC).
austin is still here where the new operation hydra is out
I think you did an excellent job with this video.
The stand always felt super awkward to me. If I had the money I'd go straight for the beauty that is the Surface Laptop.
Hope to see more videos like this where i see more UA-camrs give their honest opinions.
im holding back tears............ this video
is so powerful
Surface devices don't disappoint. The only thing that seems to disappoint is its price point. Who should pick up the surface pro? A doctor who's on the move should definitely pick this up. Allows for user when seeing patients in the ward and then when seated at a desk in the clinic or at the library
DAAAAAAAANG, Austin! Slightly trashing the Surface (actually just criticizing) right inside of Microsoft... Big balls. BIG BIG BALLS
Hey surface pro, this is guys! Today were checking out Austin!
