      Hi Kari, thank you so much for your comment! We do really love Italy so much! It's challenging because there is so much of Schengen to see, so we can't spend as much time in Italy as we'd like. But it does make us really happy to be there! Thank you for letting us know you like that we include what we eat in our videos. It's really helpful for us to hear this! -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie yes, I thoroughly enjoyed it as well. We will be going to Verona for the first time in a few weeks and then we will spend a few days in Varenna. We have been to Lake Como before and are looking forward to going back. We just wish we had more time that we could also go back to Orvieto. I frequently look at real estate there and would love to find a home on the outer wall of the city so we could have the amazing views. Maybe some day. Thanks for sharing your content. We really enjoy it.

      Hi Brenda, We hope you love Verona and would love to know what you think about it! Varenna is so great too. We understand the desire to spend more time in Italy and revisit favorite places. We love Torino as well and had hoped we could have spent time there when we were traveling with our daughter, but we couldn't squeeze in one more city! We'll send you positive energy for that Orvieto home to manifest! We love hearing that you enjoy our videos. Thank you so much for letting us know! -Judy

    Good to see you again!!! I could really relate to Kevin's love for Italian coffee and your return to Italy. Flying to Gdansk, Poland we had a layover in a small Italian airport and couldn't pass up the opportunity for cafe and panino. Cheap and delicious. Fresh and simple food, beautiful towns, art and history. Italy feeds the body and soul. Love, love, love!!!

How was Gdansk? Would you recommend it? We want to get back to Poland next year if we can find the right place to visit and make the timing work. Thanks so much, Barbara! You are right. Cinghiale is wild boar and guanciale is domestic pork cheeks. What's annoying is that we had this discussion about the difference before we put out the video (looked it up and misread what it said because both are pig, so we assumed we had it right 🤦‍♀️🤦) and somehow we still ended up getting it wrong! And you are right, Kevin was in his happy place for sure! Thanks for watching! -Kevin & Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarieI realized you may have mixed up cinghiale and guanciale after leaving the comment which makes sense because to "foreign ears" I assume the two words might sound similar (at least it happens to me all the time with english words) in any case both taste really good 😊 I'm from Tuscany and I love cinghiale meat both as pasta sauce with pappardelle and as "secondo" as well!

      Thank you so much for watching, Ted! Orvieto was such a great city for our first time back in Italy (and Europe) after seven months in Asia. We had a great time in Asia, but we were completely charmed by Orvieto's winding streets and Gothic and Romanesque architecture. You might enjoy some of our other videos from Italy, which are linked below. We have some popular cities, but some less-traveled ones, too. It's hard to believe we've visited 30 cities in Italy (a few before we became full-time travelers). It's a beautiful country. Also, Cagnes Sur Mer in France is all charm, too! -Judy

    I have one full day in Orvieto. I am considering heading to the Madonna del Latte winery for a tasting (just outside the town of Orvieto). Do you think its too much in one day for that and seeing the town? Thanks for your great videos

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  5 місяців тому

      Hi Charlotte, I don't think that's too much in one day. Your fastest way there is to take a taxi (10 miles) versus a train, which will be much more time consuming. Make absolutely sure that you make a reservation in advance, though! The owners are super friendly, but right now it's the busy harvest season and you won't want to get turned away because you don't have a reservation (it's a small winery!). There are a lot of cool things to see in Orvieto and you might not get to all of them, or even any of them, but frankly, some of what makes Orvieto special is just wandering around the streets, which are very charming! It's the energy of the city that makes it special more than going walking up to the top of the clocktower or exploring the underground. It's laid out in such a way that a nice stroll will be enchanting on its own. We'd love to know what you think about Madonna del Latte if you go and also if you found Orvieto to be as lovely as we did! -Judy

      Our biggest challenge in Italy, Dan, is deciding between primi and secondi! We're eating less, so it gets tricky! We had an incredible ribeye in Firenze that we shared and it was so tasty alongside the other delicious pastas we enjoyed. We will look for brasato di guanciale di manzo, which is probably the perfect dish for winter! Do you have any thoughts on visiting Sardinia in November? We're trying to decide if that's a mistake, and we're thinking we might not be doing it justice at that time of year. If we need to wait until next spring, that could work as well. Your travels sound so great. Lecce and the Bari train station is the extent of our experience in Puglia, and we've never explored Bascilicata or Matera...yet! Thanks for the suggestions! -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie - We love Sardinia! We were there some years back in October and the weather was pleasant and not much rain, although I read it can be more rainy in Oct/Nov. It's a beautiful and historic for sure, but keep in mind it's mountainous, so the driving can be on windy mountain roads that you share with the locals zooming by. There would certainly be less tourists, but some places probably close for the season. If there's something specific, a place or attraction, that you have a question about, just let me know!

    Happy birthday Kevin! How time flies - if I am not wrong, i remembered also wishing him Happy Birthday in one of your earlier videos around this same time last year, hahaha 😂.
    Will you be spending a lot of time in Italy this time round ? Which cities ? Will be interested to follow along. I am happy that you have finally left Asia, because I am more interested in Europe :)
    My wife is really interested in Italy, but I understand that if we come during winter to visit the coastal areas , there is electricity power sharing (load sharing) which means that it will be cold inside the AirBnB for certain time periods during the day ??

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  7 місяців тому +1

      So great to hear from you Mike! Kevin says thank you for the birthday wishes...again this year! We spent 10 days in Orvieto and then two full weeks with our daughter. We currently have a month scheduled in Sardinia in November that we might shift to spring 2025 because we are a bit worried that some places will be closed up at that time of year. We also have five days in a small town where my grandfather grew up, but that may also shift. In changing around Sardinia, we may make a few other changes IF our daughter decides to spend her birthday with us in Europe. If that's the case, we may have some additional time in late summer (but we're trying to decide if we should visit another country in Europe). Do you (or your wife) have a wish list of places you want to see?
      I am not sure that we encountered load sharing when we were in Lecce last year, but our heat was definitely limited by our Airbnb host. We didn't have control over the thermostat and absolutely froze. There were radiators, but for whatever reason, we had to tell our host that we were cold. It never warmed up and she ended up dropping off blankets for us. We were in Naples and had a space heater that we had to shift around to stay warm. That also was a trick. In Palermo the heater didn't work in the main area, only in the bedroom. So definitely there are places where heat isn't as easy to come by as we Americans would prefer. In Lecce, we tried to be respectful of the oil and gas prices that were extremely high at the time due to the Russian war. We had met up with a French couple who owned an Airbnb and they were also mentioning how exorbitant utility prices were for them as well due to the war.
      In fairness, none of these Airbnbs were expensive and we were only beginning to navigate full-time travel and Airbnbs. It could 100% have been due to the low prices or our inexperience about choosing places. But I would never stay in a place again where I didn't have full control of the heat. (That place also had issues with hot water, and a repairman had to come fix something!-We paid $61.25 for a week there, so it wasn't completely bargain basement). We do want to caution you though that in coastal areas it's very likely that restaurants and other venues may be closed because locals have fled to warmer locations. That was our experience in Lecce, and when we were on the Amalfi Coast, we heard from locals that they leave during non-tourist season, which is what is making us rethink Sardinia. -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie Thks for ur reply! I will be interested to watch whatever videos you put up on Italy … or Europe in general :) Regarding heating, I was browsing some AirBnB listings in Italy’s coastal regions and some hosts were warning that their buildings have time restrictions for turning on heating during winter (if I remember correctly). Grateful for those open warnings, anyway:).
      In this regard, I have always been wondering where do slow travelers usually set up base during the cold of winter in Europe? During winter, the coastal areas may be “dead” with many shops closed, while inland, it may be too cold to go exploring anywhere ….. To me, it seems that Greece (eg Athens) and Turkey (eg Antalya) may be good places to visit during winter - not too cold and not too “dead” in winter ? Sigh, so many 1st world problems 🙂

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  7 місяців тому

      I completely believe that the time restrictions could also be happening, unfortunately. But even with blankets, it's a total buzz kill when places are closed down. We're finding Europe more of a challenge than we expected due to the high prices in summer. Originally we were going to leave Schengen so we could be back in late October, but If we forego Sardinia in November (low season), we'd want to spend more of the summer in Europe. But anyplace in Europe will be pricey in August we're finding.
      We actually are considering pivoting from Sardinia to Antalya! We could explore more of Greece, but Athens is one of the better places in winter and we've already been there. Of course Seville is a little warmer, the Canary Islands, Tenerife. We've been trying to sort it out ourselves. We're looking at Antalya for November and then Brazil in December, January in Chile, and February in Argentina and then back in Europe in March if we can find a warmish place in Europe that early. While it's practical to spend more time in South America, we don't want to be there for six months at a stretch. -Judy

    • @Property2030sg
      @Property2030sg 7 місяців тому

      Yes, I think that planning (which country, which city, which neighbourhood, which AirBnB to stay) is one of the biggest headaches of slow travel ….. Have to adopt a young explorer mindset in order to stay positive :)
      Regarding Antalya, I think you are probably aware that late last year, Turkey passed a new 100-day law to restrict short-term rentals. I recently realise that some AirBnB hosts in Turkey do not have the necessary license under the new law, but their listings are still out there for booking :). I think I will love slow travel, hahaha

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  7 місяців тому

      Your question is a good one, Mike, regarding the restrictions in Turkey (Barcelona also is putting new restrictions in place), which we actually weren't aware of (we haven't really looked at Airbnbs yet since we only made the decision a week ago to head there in November). I went ahead and reached out to Airbnb support for their help in guiding us to properties that comply with the local restrictions.
      One suggestion I mentioned previously is that a viewer mentioned they do not rent Airbnbs from hosts with multiple properties on the platform to try to circumvent some of the richest people. Whether that's reasonable or not, I can't say for sure.
      Although you are right about the planning decisions being a headache, that also is some of the fun of full-time travel! Definitely a first-world problem to have to decide where to visit with the entire world as our oyster! But it is complicated since we all have budgets! Fortunately, we try to have as many of our bookings as possible be ones that we can change versus the ones that can't be canceled after 48 hours. We like to plan out a year in advance, but we also want to have flexibility to adapt as the year goes on and our desires change. We still will never be the people who wait to book until we're in a country and can see a property in person before booking it! -Judy

      Thank you so much, Diana, and thank you for the birthday wishes. You probably are one of the people who recommended Orvieto to us, so thank you. I was definitely in my happy place there, and it's been a blast spending time with our daughter. We are looking forward to sharing more of Italy soon! -Kevin

      Thank you so much for your kind words, Rebecca, as always! I didn't know you and Kevin were "birthday buddies"! You are right about Orvieto. We knew it wasn't going to be a long stay, but it was the perfect place to serve as a transition from our time in Asia to fast travel with our daughter. It wasn't the cheapest place in Italy, but it was definitely super charming! (Kevin says thank you for the birthday wishes!!!) -Judy

    Soooo happy to have you back in my favorite country!!! Mi piace molto il video!! Definitely will place Orvieto on our list (it just keeps growing). I hope Kevin had a wonderful birthday (well, with mega-cappuccinos, gelato and the best pasta - what’s the point of complaining!? 😜)!!!

Thank you so much for your kind words. Kevin had a great birthday. He definitely was in his happy place! ♥️ -Judy

    Another great video. It really gave me a feel for the town. I love the food culture in Italy. So much Italian cooking is just a simple preparation of incredibly fresh local ingredients. Your video showcased the food and the ingredients really well. Erin and I are trying to decide where to go in October since we don’t have anything planned yet. Italy is definitely a possibility (along with about eight other places we have been wanting to visit).

      Thanks for watching, Stan (and Erin), and for your comment! Orvieto was the perfect place to slow down after our time in Asia. And yes, simple, and fresh high-quality ingredients were so delicious. I saw your photo of lamb chops and glazed carrots, which looked yummy. We are looking forward to doing some cooking here in Madrid. If you're considering Italy, October is a great time to go because there will be fewer crowds. December 8 will be the launch of the Jubilee year, so 2025 may experience more crowds. -Judy

    My husband and I just went to Orvieto and only spent a day. We were on a trip going from Italy, to Paris, to London. We have never traveled like that before. I am hooked how is it possible to become a full-time traveler?

    I'll be going to Orvieto in about 2 weeks. I have 4 full days there and my concern is that I won't have enough to do. Your video didn't show enough about how you spent your time ( other than eating 😉). I am looking into a wine tour. Do you have any suggestions? I'm visiting Assisi and Rome after.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  4 місяці тому

      Hi Cyndie, There actually is a good amount to do in Orvieto. Here's a wine tour that people have recommended to us and I've spoken with them previously and would say they're worth trying. It's a 20-minute taxi to them and they're a small winery, so you will want to make a reservation first.
      Madonna Del Latte www.madonnadellatte.it/en/visits-and-tasting
      If you visit them, we'd love to know what you think. Also, here are some additional activities.
      * We did Pozzo della Cava, but there's also Pozzo di San Patrizio (St. Patrick's Well), which is 250 steps deep.
      * Chiesa San Giovenale (beautiful views and one of the oldest churches in Umbria)
      * Cappella del Corporale (built to celebrate the miracle of Bolsena, we talked about this briefly)
      * Orvieto Underground
      * Torre del Moro (featured in our video)
      * Greco museum next door to Duomo (quick museum, we visited)
      * Of course, the duomo
      Take time to eat the gelato, drink the aperitivi, and people watch. There's a lot of walking you can do throughout the town as well if you're interested in exploring. Even though we don't typically window shop, there is a lot to see regarding the ceramic artists, the Wizard of Oz area with tons and tons of curiosities, and all of the "Gepetto-style" woodworking. We hope you have a fabulous trip! -Judy

      @joecowan3719 We love Florence and stayed there for a few days with our daughter as a home base. We enjoyed it more than we had the last time we were there (March 2022) when we were considering moving there versus traveling full time. We have a viewer from Volterra and have heard good things about Montepulciano, so we'd absolutely love to know what you think about all of them! Unfortunately, the duomo (like many major sites in Italy) are under renovation in anticipation for the 2025 Jubilee year. -Judy

      Thanks for watching, Luigi. You are correct that Orvieto is built on a "tufa" or "tuff" rock plateau which is a type of volcanic rock that is relatively soft and easy to carve, which has been significant in the architectural history of Orvieto. Thanks for reminding us of this. And the cathedral in Orvieto has significance for being part of the miracle of Bolsena. -Judy
