  • I have to say this may be the most amazing metal detecting hunt I have ever posted on UA-cam. Jim, Garrett, Wayne, and I got onto a spot along the Oregon Trail and we discovered a military campsite that goes back to around the 1850s. We found some incredible relics and time period coins. Be sure to watch this one through and share with your friends! HH! -Zach
All finds were made on private property with the permission of the landowner.

Just found u and subbed. I've been detecting for over 35 yrs and I have lost so much hope for another generation of diggers with morals and respect. It is so bad in north central Texas that I gave up detecting for 7 years. People not asking permission, fence jumping and coming into sites at night. So good to hear you respecting each other and thanking the lord. Keep it up, I am proud of you

@@dustind.5246 Well, it's always nice to see the coin cleaned up right after the find. But I'm sure that takes a lot of editing. So if your just starting out, you can always show the cleaned coins at the end of the video. Of course if you have the talent, then show the cleaned coin right away. Brother....you're a man amongst men. Why? Because at 6:56 you had the "stones" to say out loud and with heartfelt meaning "THANK YOU LORD!". That means everything to me to see/hear a person do that when they've had a bit of good luck come their way. I'm 66, been saying/acknowledging out loud to The Lord for decades....and when I say that, I don't at all mean to infer that I'm any better than any other human walking around. I didn't always have that frame of mind, and am so thankful to The Lord that he stuck by me when I was a pretty miserable person in this life. And my guess is that all your buds in this video are the same type of good men as you are....God Bless you all. I sure enjoyed this vid. Makes me want to take up this hobby. I've always been into being by myself and wandering around fields and such looking for arrowheads and pottery sherds. Regards from Tucson, Arizona.

In the early 70s My Father and I would often side track from wherever we were going and ride sections of the Oregon trail in Wyoming. At that time, there were still recognizable items laying on the ground...mostly larger furniture. Even at my young age, I felt sad to see part of some ones dream that had to be left behind to lighten the wagon for South Pass.

Gentlemen, what a successful expedition! Fascinating that you found so many minié balls in the one spot. it was used by the Army in the 1861 Springfield rifle during the Civil War, so that may help to date your finds. Makes sense to me that the Army would camp up on a bluff so that they could oversee and command the area from a defensible spot. So many buttons too...wonder if there was a skirmish, or ? I have an idea for y'all. Get some tracking tape like hunters use when they want to mark a blood trail, or surveyors tape used in construction sites. Get a bunch. of sticks or stiff wire or even chopsticks and whenever you guys find something, mark it with a flag. It would have been interesting to see an overhead view form the drone and see if there was some kind of pattern. You could even color code them for coins, buttons, weapons, etc. Keep it up guys, what a great site you found!

The more they discover these things the more they discovered the history of that area. This is what makes it so amazing about what they're doing cuz it helps to link the historical value of the area to the lives of people that were there and why and what happened to them. As well as the era. I think it would be nice for mr. Wother a forensic archaeologist to survey this area historically and physically find out about the historical events of this area. It doesn't look like it a Battlefield simply because of all the unused ammunition yet the buttons found seem to indicate left uniforms and possible bodies left or recovered at one time. Maybe a small skirmish at one time happened here. Now this is just speculation on my part.

@Chris Collins If the cartridge was cracked and the powder was no longer contained then the whole thing was discarded. I’ve always been confused by the route they took in it though because they seem to cross into Nebraska territory in far eastern Nebraska based on the rivers and creeks they mention and not where the Oregon Trail traditionally crosses into NE. That’s why I’m not sure if I have ever hunted one of their campsites

Wow loved this! My Dad and I used to rent metal detectors and look around the old homesteads on the ranch he worked but we never found anything at all that was exciting. Watching this video made me feel like I was right there sharing all the neat finds with you guys! The one thing I do wonder - how did they come to lose such things as buttons and coins in a relatively small area? The coins especially as I wonder why they would have taken them out of their pockets or coin purses or whatever they used to hold their money? And the buttons...did they just happen to fall off when the soldiers were drilling or hunting? Have always wondered how these things ended up where found. Really great video - thanks for sharing! Will definitely watch for more like this!

On my Grandparents farm back at the beginning of the 1900s they found bags of ammo. The ammo supply could have been in bags also and dropped. I read about it at the Seward Museum in Seward NE. There are lots of Oregon trail finds, my Iron bed came off the trail. It was from the fields where they threw items off to lighten the wagons. My Grandpa was still plowing up stuff when I was a kid in the 1960s and 70s. My childhood was enchanted I think

@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting No lol that is really cool. My Grammar was a one room school teacher in Henderson back in the 20s-30s until she married my Grandpa who was 15yrs her junior. He was working with the CCC. His mother "enslaved" her 3 sons who were 14, 15 and 13 by signing that they were old enough to work in the CCC.... another long story... hahaha. But my family was between York and Henderson.
As a child Grammar would take me with her to the Seward museum trying to get it started. I think it was a large room to see and another room with storage, that was 50 years ago lol. I know there were many boxes of things we took. I don't think any of the other grandkids were shown the attic like I was. Grammar has boxes all kept with the year on them. I remember her showing me an elaborate gold 20s flapper dress and ALL of the movie playbills from the first movies shown in Nebraska. I remember all of the heirloom hair pictures, all of the aerial pictures of all the farms in York county, maps of the original plots given out for farms homesteads.
I was the weird child that loved all that stuff. I would sit on the stairs and read all of the old movie magazines the stacks went from base of riser to the ceiling. Guess being out in the middle of no one on a farm you savored the glamour.
I don't remember what they call them but she had 10+ boxes of those pictures you looked thru with a viewer that 3-D'd the pictures. I thought she had taken over some of the boxes to the museum. I remember only one specific to the area and it was a large church that had caught fire.
We lived in many states and only went out to Grammar and Grandpa's once a year every year. We always stayed a week. Grandpa actually found my iron bed out on the trail while plowing with me on his lap. We only found the headboard and footboard and I had to get other railings but his out buildings had tons of things in it he had come across.
Sorry I got to babbling going down memory lane lol. Most people look at NE and just see cornfields, not me! I remember the crop rotations (used to remember their order lol) I know my cousins lost all of anything small Grammar had in the dresser on the front porch lol it would be fun to go find that stuff but when they sold the farm the moron who bought it burned the house down. I bet he never knew that if he had dismantled it he would have found so much history in that attic. It went back to when the first built the house in the1860s.
LOL My worst allergy is Cottonwood hahaha and my Great Great Grandpa had planted tons of Cottonwood's on his homestead because they grew fastest and biggest lol. just some of the stupid things I remember lol.
I am so glad to know there are younger ones remembering history. My son was 26 when he passed in a car accident in May. Before he was 10 I know I had drug him thru and to over 200 museums, civil war reenactments and historic places. I am a firm believer of if you don't know where you are from you will never know where you are going because you want to make sure bad history does not repeat its self.
      my email is @yahoo.com
Keep up the great work lol I will stop babbling now hahaha I am disabled and fal into the UA-cam black hole lol but I loved it when I used to metal detect as a kid I had a Compass which still worked but my demon possessed sister threw away in June when she cleaned out my parents house. Some people just aren't real smart hahaha.
OMG I am sorry I am babbling so badly, it got cold and pain shot up... my therapist told me not to stop babbling hahaha and to never erase lol.
Take care and never stop looking down!! 1. it stops you from stepping in the hole 2. it makes you stop and look what is in that hole!!!

I'm excited to see your focus and pure spirit. Contact a good non political university and take some on line archeology courses. Contact the Museum of the United States Army. They can help you research all of this. If there was a fight here it would be a matter of record. They could possibly tell you where the nearest outpost or fort was located. Keep digging but dig with intelligence. You are holding our history in your hands, be our caretakers of that history.

You have apparently done due diligence in your research to locate a successful detectoring site with exciting results. This being the Oregon Trail, I hope that a number of your finds would be presented to local museums so the fruits of your finds could be gazed upon by others who also might gleefully express 'dude'. The site and artifact information that you collect would also be valuable to organizations like the Oregon California Trails Association (and probably others). Even though you have permission from the land owner, the 1968 National Trails System Act preserves the trail remains and the artifacts along it. The Oregon and Mormon Pioneer trails were listed in 1978, and the California and Pony Express trails in 1992. So even with local permission, there could be wickets to jump regarding MDing along the trail.
With all that said, some really cool finds!

😬 the buttons have to have been on a body 👀. You've found a battle ground! Wish you was marking what and where you might have a great story, or a deadly one! Hope you give some History on here.

    • @richardthompson9836
      @richardthompson9836 4 роки тому +6

Not necessarily Kimberly. In those days soldiers didn't have a change of uniforms if away from their base of opperations like soldiers of today. An army on the move was pretty much using the same clothing as their wagons transported their food and ammunition. Sometimes they carried a bed roll, back pack, waist belts with ammo pouches, canteen, bayonet & scabber, and a heavy musket. Soldiers would often scavenge clothing and equipment from their deceased comrades just to keep going. As clothing in those days were mostly made of wool or cotton, and buttons were sewn with cotton thread. This thread rotted rather quickly and the movements of putting on and off gear would commonly pop buttons. This would be particularly true when hastily preparing for a skirmish. I would have to think that if there had been a body there one would have found numerous other buttons close to the others. I would also think, that unless the ground had been scrapped, a body(s) would have been much deeper.
