    Kudos to Mazda for avoiding the turbo and CVT craze!

    I've always liked Mazda since the 90s and still do... Good job!

    It would interesting to see a Nissan Juke vs. CX-3 comparison. One, a pioneer in the sub-compact CUV segment while the other, the latest in the segment. Both are similarly sized and the Juke never gets mentioned. Nowadays, people only mention the Trax and the HR-V.

    Steve, great review as always.
    As for the car, it is definitely cool looking. Other reviewers are eager to have you compare the CX-3 to other CUVs. The one competitor it can't beat, in my mind, is the Mazda3 Hatch. Unless you REALLY need AWD, I can't see why you'd pick a Mazda2-based CX-3 over a Mazda3.

      +Andrew8126 Excellent point. Other than AWD you can't make a good case for the CX-3.

    This is one of my top cars that I've driven this year. Absolutely loved everything about it...except for maybe the rear seat room for people over 5'7"

      +Scott Villeneuve It really is pretty cool but it's hard to justify its usefulness.

      Justify its usefulness? If someone wants it then it's useful, as much as any other vehicle on the road.

    I take it the AWD system takes in outside ambient temperature. It would be useless if it takes inside temp. since one would have the heater blasting during winter months.

    Steve, I'd be interested to see you review some Mazda CX-3 competitors with newly available bigger engine choices...I'm thinking of the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with the new 2.4 liter engine, and the 2016 Buick Encore Sport Touring. Any chance you'll be test driving those over the next few months?

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  8 років тому

      +CJ VN I haven't driven the Encore since its debut but I liked it back then and because it's been updated for 2016 I'll put it on the schedule. But I will say that I'm not a big Mitsu guy and the Outlander Sport has never done anything for me. The Encore is getting a bigger engine - something it could use - when it's redesigned in 2019.

      +TestDriveNow.com featuring Auto Critic Steve Hammes Thanks Steve. The 2016 Encore's upgraded engine is part of the Sport Touring package, along with a few cosmetic changes. I'll be interested to read your take on the changes.
      I mentioned it and the Outlander Sport since they're about the same size as the CX-3, and I recently test drove an Outlander Sport with the 2.4 liter engine and newer CVT that simulates gear changes. The new engine actually has some pep to it, and I didn't even realize it was still using a CVT.
      For perspective, I drove my Dad's 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander for a while so I know what an awful CVT and that base engine, feel like. ;)

    I love the style of this cuv and the gas mileage achieved without a turbo and cvt. Downsides for me have to be the small cargo capacity, low power output and this hideously small wheels. Overall I think a job well done for Mazda

    • @letsgonow5641
      @letsgonow5641 8 років тому

      +Anthony Cuda The GT has bigger rims. I dont think the wheels are small for the car.

    Not only did you mention the CX-3s competitors, add Nissan Juke, Fiat 500x, and the class leader Subaru Crosstrek.

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  8 років тому

      +Billy Sou And even the Jeep Renegade. The Crosstrek is the sales leader but many of its competitors have just left the gate. I suspect by the end of 2016 you'll see Honda and Chevy right up there...currently the Trax is 2nd, trailing by 23,000 units. The 500X - just like all Fiats - sells in miniscule numbers by comparison.

      Ultimately, people will prefer the Jeep Renegade for its versatility. The 500x is preferred for its styling. And perhaps their version compares to the Mini Countryman.

    I think it's more for people who want to drive a miata in the snow and have a modicum of practicality at the sacrifice of some speed and performance. Not for people looking to buy an suv for suv purposes. its slightly redundant with the slightly larger and faster 3 hatchback. I would buy it if not for that armrest and cup holder situation. Waiting for the 5 year refresh. Hoping mazda hears our cries over it and a little more horsepower.

      @pwagner0176 7 років тому

      Alex Gorant just looked at these two days ago. Torsion beam rear suspension and poor gas mileage for it's size were a no-go. I opted for a Mazda 3 Sport with Preferred Equipment Package. Going to give it five years so hopefully the CX3 will be better by that time.
      No interior storage was a letdown too.

    Good looking car but way too small. Same with the HRV, Escape etc.

    Wow! I'm reading reviews of the CX-3 from being a great crossover to a mediocre attempt by Mazda. Maybe Mazda rushed this out the door too soon.

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  8 років тому

      +Tully3674 I think it's hard to call it great when it's this undersized. But it's darn good in most other ways.

    • @letsgonow5641
      @letsgonow5641 8 років тому +1

      +Tully3674 The only real flaw it might be too small for some. The juke is similarly sized an has been selling well even though its ugly as sin lol.. Other than that it wins in most other ways.

    What an idiotic rear seat headrest design. Who could possibly be comfortable back there?

      They do push up, but kids hate them.
