They would've still been controlled mainly by the #Luftwaffe; the senior officer commanding would've been partially responsible to Rommel, but mainly to #GeneralFeldsmarschall "Smiling Albert" Kesselring, the senior German commander in Italy.
The Luftwaffe's ability to attack like this didn't really happen until 1943 in the Western theatre as the Defence of the Reich fighter squadrons formed when the 8th AF started their strategic campaign over Germany. Still it was really fun!
I played this mission a ton as a kid. It was by far my favorite in Big Red One, which is saying something because there are a ton of absolutely fantastic missions in this game. When I was a senior in High School, my grandfather called me one day to tell me how proud he was and how much I reminded him of his uncle. As it turns out, my Grandfather's Uncle was a Navigator on a B-24J Liberator with the 779th Bomber Squadron (Heavy), 464th Bomb Group flying out of Italy during World War II. On one of their first missions to bomb Augsberg, Germany, their plane went down over the Adriatic Sea, and none of them were ever heard or seen again. I like to think that it was through him that made me appreciate this mission more than any other in the game.
9:14 I never thought much of this as a kid, but can you imagine that? The guys on your plane are essentially your brothers, and at this point, Stretch has just listened to one of them get killed. He now has to go man the tail gun, knowing what he's gonna find.
The Tail Gunner Position was arguably the absolute most dangerous position in a US Bomber at the time, the second being the Ball/Ventral Gunner since its center mass and mostly relying on their curved designs to ricochet bullets off. They were also the places the Aircraft was going to take a majority of their attacks from. Inside those compact spaces, the Gunner cannot fit a Parachute in with them, so if the ball turret or tail is severed or the whole plane is plummeting, both are usually the last to get out if at all. Being Juicy Targets, largely Unarmored and having remote Escape Equipment, dangerous is an understatement.
@@silvertalon007depended on how the attack was coming. FW.190s specialized in head on nose attacks due to their heavier firepower and attempts to take out bombers in one go by knocking out the pilots
My parents didnt let me have video games when I was a kid (I know, the horror) So I had to buy everything for myself. I saved up my money doing oddjobs for ages to buy my own Ps2 and this was the first game I bought. And I played the ever loving shit out of it! This was my favorite level, I remember being blown away by the details of the wood-grain in the plywood lol. Thanks for the memories man.
@@AllGamingStarred I believe so. I can barely remember when I was like 10 I was playing this mission (I didn't know English at that time so I just played blindly with no context) and I do remember that at some point the plane was damaged and an option appeared on the screen to jump off and I did. I have no way to confirm this because my PS2 is long gone and I don't have it on my PC to test it out but it's just a part of my memory now.
@Rocky Montana Garcia mayne if the plane actually dies then you go into a scene where the captain tells everyone to jump out but when they do the doors jammed then everyone screams and you blow up and die
@@uncleflagzz It's true. First, the captain says, "Listen, if we take too much damage, we need to bail out." If you take more damage, you will jump out but fail the mission. This is more likely to happen on Hard.

( Love you pawpaw barefoot ) semper fidelis 💪❤️ (he was part of the 101 screaming eagles)
me and my grandpa's favorite mission. wouldn't have ever gotten into ww2 games if it wasn't for him. I was just a little kid playing this game back then but I remember it like it was yesterday. my gpa passed away in 2010 rip gpa glad you got me into some of the best games ever made.
jesus this is a trip, that feeling of walking over the gangway after the bomb bay doors were open, with all that air between you and the ground and the only thing separating you was the thin piece of metal to walk on will never not give me a funny feeling in my stomach. It's so weird experiencing it again even after maybe a decade of not playing it.
This was my first cod game, I remember playing this on my uncle's ps2 when I was around 5. This was my favorite mission but I didn't know how to select it in the menu so I'd always ask him to let me play "the flying mission". As I am now 18 and it's been confirmed the next cod will be in WW2, I'm hoping it has a good campaign.
AFGuidesHD the first plane that flys by you when you get to the rear turret is the 'ace', it reappears for a second time giving you another chance to shoot it down (the plane that was smoking)

This mission was so stressful for gotta managed to keep half your crew alive and your plane still flying I failed this mission more then I can count in the past years
Many probably don’t know this but depending on where you were in the plane different things would happen if you were shot down. I remember being able to parachute out one time and another time the player character was stuck and wasn’t able to bail out
Best mission; even with the dated graphics I loved playing this on an HD tv with surround sound more times than I can count. So much nostalgia! Does anyone know what happens if you disobey orders and shoot the scouts? Or anyone have videos of what happens when you actually bail out? Those are two things I never knew before I sent this to the thrift store, now I'm wishing I'd kept it.
I don’t people have a realization on how terrifying being a ball turret gunner is. I nearly had heart failure when that dude said they couldn’t pull him up 😭
When I played this as a little kid I didn't realize how unrealistic it was. You're just an everyday gunner who takes out half a dozen bombers, around 50 fighters, three ships, and an entire industrial complex without getting hurt.
I remember having a glitch while in the tail gun where it wouldn't go to the next part after I shot down the ace. I ended up shooting down well over 100 planes. Also, I never knew about that bit of dialogue if the ace shoots down one of your bombers. I guess I always shot him down at least by his second pass, so I never got to that point. RIP 'Five Day Express'.
my favorite mission in of almost all cod games. i just wish it had hitmarkers so you knew when you hit a plane as i found it quite hard at times to know if i acturly hit the planes. but imagine this with todays graphics dang that would look amazing

I remember both but Frontline was the shit. Amazing soundtrack and the levels were fun to play through.
I loved how detailed the plane was. There are characters in the plane you won't even notice if you didn't explore it. Cool mission

The sounds the Messerschmitts make is the most realiszic one ive ever heard in a video game

Lots of people say all ghillied up is the best mission. I say it’s this one. OGs know 💯
This and the tank mission

The music in this missions start is so damn good
The death scene of this mission was epic
