I think the reason people had such a visceral reaction and got mad at Aziraphale is that Crowley literally was at his most vulnerable and basically his worst nightmare kinda came true. Obviously Azirahpale in his own way was trying to be together with Crowley, but for Crowley what they already had was enough. :( it just makes me so sad.

If he didn’t become supreme archangel, someone else would, and that person would have no hesitation in causing the second coming. Aziraphale thinks he can really change Heaven…

Your comment reminded me of Jingo--where one of Pratchett's main themes in the book was that going along with a corrupt administration hoping to soften the blow never makes it better. Now you've got me wondering if he and Gaiman planned this to go with that same theme! Angsty, but delicious.
I have a couple of theories: When Aziraphale and crowley cast the miracle together it caused a massive power surge unlike anything they had seen before, either Aziraphale and Crowley are more powerful than they realise or working together amplified their power. This may have led to the Metatron either believing Aziraphale is more powerful than he is so is worthy of replacing Gabriel and possibly easy to control due to his blind faith in the goodness of heaven or: The Metatron is afraid of how powerful they are working together and needed to break them up and he knew Crowley would refuse to become an angel again so made the offer on purpose. It's also possible that he may have cast a miracle to sway Aziraphale as some people say you can hear the miracle bells a couple of times.
I've been reveling in all of the Doctor Who easter eggs: "bigger on the inside", Derek Jacobi (one incarnation of The Master during David Tennant's run), The Fez in the magic shop, etc...
Also, I saw someone online chatting about how Aziraphale going back to Heaven is full-on like going he's back to an abusive relationship and I really agree with that. And unfortunately, while Crowley has made already peace with the fact that Heaven isn't as 'good' as it purports to be and that it will always be an unsafe and toxic environment, Aziraphale still needs to wake up to the reality of that without being clouded by his trauma. I also know several people have talked about how Maggie and Nina are like a mirror to Aziraphale and Crowley and so some come down to the more obvious interpretation of Maggie = Aziraphale (because she's so sweet and wholesome) and Nina = Crowley (because she's a bit rough around the edges and acerbic). But honestly, IMO, taking into account Nina's abusive ex and her staying in that relationship FAAAAR longer than she should have, maybe she's more like Aziraphale after all. 😭😭 ANYWAY, here's hoping for happier things in S3. 🤞🤞🤞
I also think that Aziraphale saw how unhappy/directionless Crowley was at the beginning of the season (he asked Shax “what’s the point of it all”) and thought if he changed Heaven to be good, that Crowley would finally have that smile on his face again like he did pre-fall while creating nebulas. Keep in mind Aziraphale didn’t agree to go to Heaven until Metatron offered Crowley to come too.

It has been nearly 3 weeks since I saw this episode the first time and even just watching a reaction of it makes me sob. It is so painfully good. Had you told me 4 years ago that we'd get to this point, I wouldn't have believed it. I was one of the people who said we didn't NEED a kiss to display the genuine love these two have for each other, but my god am I glad we got it, even if it makes my heart ache so badly. Crowley & Aziraphale love each other so much, like actually SO much, that it blinds them at times and make them choose the wrong side of things. All due to wanting to protect each other. We are witnessing one of the great queer romances of all time I think, and I need Prime to stop being dickbags, pay their writers and announce S3 so Neil can finish this story.

Remember when Muriel explained that only angels that are in the hierarchy of a throne, dominion or above are able to access the files about Gabriel and Crowley was able to open it? It's the same with the box. Aziraphale couldn't see anything inside when he looked into it, but the moment it was handed over to Crowley around 9:18, there's suddenly stuff inside the box. They've been making a hint of Crowley's hierarchy within the angels this season and it feels very important for the next one.
Every time that last scene comes on, I CAN'T-- It's so heartbreaking and devastating. The direction and acting in that scene were too good that you just can't help but feel...so much😭
Take heart, dear fans. Azi is naive but he is not stupid. You can see his mind working the moment after he learned of the second coming plan. He has not rejected Crowley any more than Crowley has rejected him. This had to happen to keep their journey moving forward to its inevitable conclusion. I've been both looking forward to and dreading this reaction because I knew it would utterly destroy you as it did me. So many utterly beautiful moments, especially between Beezlebub and Gabriel which, despite being crammed into one flashback sequence, felt completely natural and perfect. The storyline for this series has almost been incidental as I've just been so invested in all of the relationships in this show, all of which had pretty satisfying and believable resolutions. I liked that Maggie and Nina didn't end up going straight into a relationship and they're giving that time as I feel that seems more realistic and healthy. So roll on season 3. Gaiman has promised a resolution to the story no matter what so if we don't get a TV series we'll get a comic or a book finish. I gather season 3 was always what Pratchett and Gaiman had in mind for a second book and season 2 was a bridge between the two. I hope you were able to sleep after this. I couldn't imagine watching 4 episodes in a row like especially so late at night AND having to do it all on camera. Your reaction was exactly the same as mine when I saw it. Though now a few weeks down the line I see Aziraphale’s POV way more. He didn’t want to change Crowley for Heaven, he wanted to change Heaven for Crowley. He wanted to make Heaven into the beacon of goodness he knows it should be, the beacon of goodness that Crowley deserves.
Crowley's "let there be light", and his ability to open the file says a lot about his status prior to the fall. He needs to stop protecting Aziraphel from heavens dogma/toxic power trip. Hope neither of them end up errased in season 3 due to Aziraphel's blind spot about heaven.
I have to imagine GO3 ends with A&C, along with our GO1 earthlies including Adam squaring off against Up and Down while Mistress Ineffible weighs in with the true ineffible plan. A&C become the custodians of an endless earth. Shakespeare called France "this best garden of the world." Would not A&C make earth "this best garden of the firmament."
While my feels are still all over the place, especially in regards to my Ineffable Husband bbs, I love that all three of the romances at the center of the story were queer. That makes my own queer-self super-happy! It was like: 'You want representation? HERE'S OODLES OF IT!' 🌈

My quick Fixit Fic: When they're outside the bookshop at the end, instead of taking the elevator, Az runs across the street to Crowley, the cars come to halt, honking like a chorus of trumpets. The shop owners all go to their windows to see what's happening. Crowley's shocked but ecstatic, Az is giddy but anxious, they kiss, jump into "their" car and drive off .... but not before Crowley flips off Metatron still waiting in the lift as they drive by. (I know Gaiman will fix this next season in a glorious manner, so I'm not too worried)

I should have been more prepared for *that* scene after spending all of s1 of ofmd thinking how much Stede/Ed remind me of Zira/Crowley and knowing how that ended 😅 I was devastated, I could bare eat or sleep for 2 days over this season. I tried to distract myself right after I finished the season by going for coffee with a friend, but when they played Love of my life I almost cried in the middle of the café 😭😅
In my headcanon, both Our Flag Means Death and Good Omens end with the declaration of love and the kiss, everyone sees the light and they're finally, officially together. Even if shit is happening around them, they're happy. And then the relationship drama and angst can happen next season, when it will be resolved soon. This is how it went down to me, no matter the actual endings.

I got into fanfiction after the ending of _Game of Thrones._ I read nothing but _Game of Thrones_ and _A Song of Ice and Fire_ fanfiction for a few years. I know there is a great _Good Omens_ fanfic community (some of whom have been shipping Gabriel and Beelzebub since the end of the first season (Ineffable Bureaucracy)), but I was very satisfied with the first season, so I haven't really checked it out (more into metas on that). This season very much ends on a note that says more coming (I think Amazon will renew it when the time comes and Gaiman says he will write it as a book if they don't), and I'm eager to see what it will be. I think this was beautifully done, although not that perfect happy ending like last time. There are a lot of reasons for Aziraphale to make the choice he has, and for Crowley to make the choice he has. And maybe Azirophale being there will be important. There is no question about whether they love each other or want to be together. As someone on Tumblr or UA-cam noted, Beelzebub and Gabriel can be together because they are selfish. They care about themselves and each other. They're unsatisfied with their jobs and in love. There is nothing tethering them to Heaven or Hell or the Earth (gravity isn't really a problem). They don't care whether there's an Armageddon 2, really; they just don't want to be involved in it. (Or a Second Coming either. More nonsense to deal with.) Aziraphale and Crowley both care. And they are going to be involved one way or another. And they have a ways to go (still) in understanding each other. There is a lot more there to understand than B and G have. I am hearing rumblings of Muriel and Eric shipping, by the way. :)
also how many times can I watch david tennant lose the blonde love of his life in these shows. If I watch anything else and he has a blonde love interest I'm going on a vacation.
You could always watch David and Michael in "Staged", which I do when I want to recover from all the heartbreak. At least they have their real-life partners with them in that, and it's just hilarious!

Ok I’m copy and pasting a text message i sent to my friend about a huge theory in the fandom rn to provide some comfort: biggest theory right now is dubbed The Coffee Theory The TLDR of the theory is that Metatron poisoned the coffee he gave to Aziraphale to make him more compliant. Main evidences: 1.) Metatron was weirdly aggressive in insisting Aziraphale drank the coffee 2.) The coffee is *specifically* flavored with almond, a flavor that is popularly used in literature to denote the taste of cyanide. The fact that the almond flavor is emphasised *twice* really drives this one home for me 3.) When Metatron hands the coffee to Aziraphale, there is a *faint* and *barely noticable* miracle sound effect that plays in the background. This may imply that Metatron miracled the coffee to have some sort of manipulative effect on Aziraphale. My personal interpretation is that the coffee wasnt *literally* poisoned, but rather that the coffee is a metaphor for manipulation, for poisoning of the mind, etc etc. Lemme know what u think :)
Jodie and I just teared up rewatching the ending with you. 😫 Have you seen the “Miracled Coffee Theory” yet? The idea that Metatron did something to the latte to just subtly influence Aziraphale choice? There’s a tiny miracle noise when they’re talking and another when he looks unsure outside the elevator. It’s totally in-character for Aziraphale to still believe in the power of good, but I really think he’d grown to understand heaven itself was dysfunctional & toxic just like Crowley said…

When Aziraphale said “I forgive you,” I literally let out a wail and started sobbing. Then continued through the credits.
Crowley's "let there be light", and his ability to open the file says a lot about his status prior to the fall.
He needs to stop protecting Aziraphel from heavens dogma/toxic power trip. Hope neither of them end up errased in season 3 due to Aziraphel's blind spot about heaven.
I have to imagine GO3 ends with A&C, along with our GO1 earthlies including Adam squaring off against Up and Down while Mistress Ineffible weighs in with the true ineffible plan. A&C become the custodians of an endless earth. Shakespeare called France "this best garden of the world." Would not A&C make earth "this best garden of the firmament."
And it would make sense respect to the first episode of the S1 when God was narrating and said: "all started, how it will end, with a garden."
It would, tho the tale ended in the Young's back garden when Dog got out and Adam torched the bit of hedge to afford a pretext for Adam to give chase.

While my feels are still all over the place, especially in regards to my Ineffable Husband bbs, I love that all three of the romances at the center of the story were queer. That makes my own queer-self super-happy! It was like: 'You want representation? HERE'S OODLES OF IT!' 🌈
I honestly wouldn’t mind a literal deus ex machina ending for season 3 with God stepping in and saying “well of course those two are together-I made them for each other. Was hoping they would sing together in my Heavenly Choir, but this will do.”

My quick Fixit Fic: When they're outside the bookshop at the end, instead of taking the elevator, Az runs across the street to Crowley, the cars come to halt, honking like a chorus of trumpets. The shop owners all go to their windows to see what's happening. Crowley's shocked but ecstatic, Az is giddy but anxious, they kiss, jump into "their" car and drive off .... but not before Crowley flips off Metatron still waiting in the lift as they drive by. (I know Gaiman will fix this next season in a glorious manner, so I'm not too worried)

I should have been more prepared for *that* scene after spending all of s1 of ofmd thinking how much Stede/Ed remind me of Zira/Crowley and knowing how that ended 😅 I was devastated, I could bare eat or sleep for 2 days over this season. I tried to distract myself right after I finished the season by going for coffee with a friend, but when they played Love of my life I almost cried in the middle of the café 😭😅
In my headcanon, both Our Flag Means Death and Good Omens end with the declaration of love and the kiss, everyone sees the light and they're finally, officially together. Even if shit is happening around them, they're happy. And then the relationship drama and angst can happen next season, when it will be resolved soon. This is how it went down to me, no matter the actual endings.
I like how God is portrayed as a well meaning but distracted overseer who has lost track of what middle management is up to.

I got into fanfiction after the ending of _Game of Thrones._ I read nothing but _Game of Thrones_ and _A Song of Ice and Fire_ fanfiction for a few years. I know there is a great _Good Omens_ fanfic community (some of whom have been shipping Gabriel and Beelzebub since the end of the first season (Ineffable Bureaucracy)), but I was very satisfied with the first season, so I haven't really checked it out (more into metas on that). This season very much ends on a note that says more coming (I think Amazon will renew it when the time comes and Gaiman says he will write it as a book if they don't), and I'm eager to see what it will be. I think this was beautifully done, although not that perfect happy ending like last time.
There are a lot of reasons for Aziraphale to make the choice he has, and for Crowley to make the choice he has. And maybe Azirophale being there will be important. There is no question about whether they love each other or want to be together.
As someone on Tumblr or UA-cam noted, Beelzebub and Gabriel can be together because they are selfish. They care about themselves and each other. They're unsatisfied with their jobs and in love. There is nothing tethering them to Heaven or Hell or the Earth (gravity isn't really a problem). They don't care whether there's an Armageddon 2, really; they just don't want to be involved in it. (Or a Second Coming either. More nonsense to deal with.)
Aziraphale and Crowley both care. And they are going to be involved one way or another. And they have a ways to go (still) in understanding each other. There is a lot more there to understand than B and G have.

Ok I’m copy and pasting a text message i sent to my friend about a huge theory in the fandom rn to provide some comfort:
biggest theory right now is dubbed The Coffee Theory
The TLDR of the theory is that Metatron poisoned the coffee he gave to Aziraphale to make him more compliant.
Main evidences:
1.) Metatron was weirdly aggressive in insisting Aziraphale drank the coffee
2.) The coffee is *specifically* flavored with almond, a flavor that is popularly used in literature to denote the taste of cyanide. The fact that the almond flavor is emphasised *twice* really drives this one home for me
3.) When Metatron hands the coffee to Aziraphale, there is a *faint* and *barely noticable* miracle sound effect that plays in the background. This may imply that Metatron miracled the coffee to have some sort of manipulative effect on Aziraphale.
My personal interpretation is that the coffee wasnt *literally* poisoned, but rather that the coffee is a metaphor for manipulation, for poisoning of the mind, etc etc. Lemme know what u think :)

Have you seen the “Miracled Coffee Theory” yet? The idea that Metatron did something to the latte to just subtly influence Aziraphale choice? There’s a tiny miracle noise when they’re talking and another when he looks unsure outside the elevator.
It’s totally in-character for Aziraphale to still believe in the power of good, but I really think he’d grown to understand heaven itself was dysfunctional & toxic just like Crowley said…
I just think it takes all the impact of Aziraphale's choice away when you make it.... not his choice after all.
