History of Power Rangers is a series where Linkara looks at every season of the show and offers critical analysis!
The History of Power Rangers travels to Reefside, where the Rangers are powered by genocide to fight off scientists who don’t know how to hold test tubes or who mistake their experiments for Mountain Dew.

Tommy: "You can rewrite DNA on the fly, and you're using it to turn people into dinosaurs? But with tech like that, you could cure cancer! "
Mesogog: "But I don't want to cure cancer. I want to turn people into dinosaurs."
Little did they know that mesogog saw some of the abandoned JP sequels scripts and wanted them a reality
"Why can'tyou just want to rule the Earth like all the other sickos?"
I love how jaded Tommy is here; bored by Mesogog instead of intimidated.
I gotta figure a lot of the veteran Rangers are like that as time goes on. Like during major attacks in other cities Rangers like Adam are just casually sipping tea in a cafe like:
“Huh. It’s Tuesday.”
@@mitchellcowan2500
Considering how often the world gets in peril I wouldn't be surprised that many of the older teams just kind of shrug things off after a while. You can only go through so many evil villains before it starts getting redundant.
Plus his thoughts in the finalie about Mesogog coming back for more just before the last morph as well.
“Days like this make me miss Divatox…”
@@MarcAquino1095 Post-rehab Divatox (Hoyt) or nose-candy Divatox (Turner)?
Tommy: “let me guess, a giant monster grew and is attacking the city?”
Blue Ranger: “You’ve done this before haven’t you?”
Tommy: “once or twice”.
BIGGEST UNDERSTATEMENT IN PR HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!

“11 times as a matter of fact”.
I always loved that meta joke since it's both funny that he was on point but also displays his experience. Gives those starting with Dino Thunder the idea of his history before the next episode.
The fact that Tommy mentions he doesn't wear that much black so he goes shopping to fix that after his first morph...
I can't help but laugh. That's an amazingly subtle joke.
It’s feels like the type of joke rpm would make.
I don't feel like it's subtle at all but it's still funny.
There’s Green, White and Red in his closet
I’m not sure I’d say it was subtle, but it was a good joke lol
That’s one of the funniest scenes in Power Rangers
While the death of JDF does reframe your analysis of Fighting Spirit, Jackie Marchand, a long-time producer and writer for Power Rangers who wrote the script for that episode, did say on twitter after JDF's death that the episode "was a not-so-veiled metaphor about battling your inner demons", so your analysis might have more applicability for JDF's life than we might have liked.
Elsa: "Aren't you a little too old for this, Tommy?"
Tommy Oliver: "I may be old... But I can still pull it off! *DINO THUNDER, POWER UP!"*
One of the best oneliners from Jason David Frank himself.
What's funny is that Tommy would only be in his twenties by this point.
I think the line, "I may be old... But I can still pull it off!" is an example of old nostalgic fans.
Hits differently when JDF had just hit 30 and ends up dead before 50.
Tommy--"It's like Riding a Bike"
Jdf literally said this was a stupid line 😂
Rest in Peace Jason David Frank aka Tommy Oliver.
The legendary Ranger from Green Mighty Morphing Power Ranger to the Black Dino Thunder Power Ranger.
I literally didnt care about Power Rangers until he joined the show. Huge loss.
Trent and Kira are one of my biggest frustrations in all of Power Rangers. They flirt throughout the first half of the season, but then some higher up at Disney said a “boy show” can’t have a romantic subplot, forcing the writers to drop their relationship entirely just when it hits a major turning point.
I don't get it.
@@xgray2012 I kinda get what he's saying. There's a lot of build up through a lot of the season towards Kira and Trent's romance, but at the 2/3 part, when Trent joins the team, the romance kinda drops and is never really focused on again
I heard the situation gotten so bad that the characters weren't allowed to have any physical contact with each other.
Crazy because IIRC she openly flirts with Blake in front of him
@@MikeP828 maybe she just has a thing for brainwashed boys lmao
That Batman line from Connor reminds me of how his actor, James Napier, is a nephew of Alan Napier, the actor who played Alfred in the Adam West Batman series.
I thought those two were related. I always thought that Jimmy was Alan's grandson.

I never realized that until now, I thought it was just a random joke.
*FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS I LAY DORMANT, WHO HAS DISTURBED MY-* Oh, it's Linkara with a History of the Power Rangers video.
Nice.
Fun fact: Kira's actress, Emma Lahana, actually audition for the role of Tori for Ninja Storm.
Another fact: Apparently both Emma Lahana and James Napier, who played Kira and Conner respectively, both distances themselves from Power Rangers, for Lahana is because people keep referring to her to by her character's name instead of her actual name. For James he only needed money for his company that he wanted to produce.
That’s kinda sad but they have the reasons. Maybe one day they’ll do fan stuff again
Lahana I feel will be the least inclined after despicable online behavior, and I dont blame her.
Yeah, but hopefully, someday, they'll do something even if it would an one off fan bit.
Well for James it's also because he prefers being behind the camera as a director, he doesn't do any acting period anymore

What did overzealous fans do this time?
"Why? Because its Science, thats why."
I love that Dr. Forrester line
"Our villainous backstory: A clumsy idiot."
There's a clip worthy of reuse, if I ever heard one.
Sounds perfect for many of the villains in Overdrive and Megaforce.
@@shadowlinkbds I mean, in Megaforce, very few of the villains *had* backstories.
@@HOLDENPOPE eh even then they wouldn't bother to think of one
I mean given how Tommy got his start, and what we see in both this season and his future appearances, “Trying to combine Dinosaur DNA with technology” sound suspiciously like Tommy was trying to either restore the Mighty Morphin’ powers or recreate something similar.
And seeing that Adam and later himself manage to morph with zero difficulty, I say it succeeded.
@@KhanhNguyen-mh5ecCouldve already been repaired honestly, since he was able to morph with difficulty in In Space. It’s possible the Space rangers were able to, with the help of Billy, repair the powers.

@@KhanhNguyen-mh5ec Why would they do it for just Adam 💀
I JUST realized “Day of the Dino” was probably a reference to “Day of the Dumpster.”
The reason Trent gets the stego, looses it and then gets it back is because in Abaranger its a lot more complicated
In the Sentai, the Mecha are properly sentient, regularly having conversations (in japanese) with the rangers and each other.
the steggo goes with Abarekiller willingly the second time, basically has stolkholm syndrome and thinks Abarekiller can make him stronger
Yeah, lot of the Trent stuff really can be partially explained by his Sentai counterpart basically being evil for almost the entire run of the series and then switching sides at the end.
Kinda agree with Linkara that Trent should’ve lost the powers as they took on live of their own before gaining them back.
26:53 No. I think in the world of Power Rangers that “Dinosaur” much like “Ninja” is one of the fundamental, primal energies of the universe. Much like Magic, Gravity and Friendship.
Honestly, I agree. The amount of Ancient Mystical Forces that takes the form of something dino-like supports it.
Dino Thunder really hits a lot harder now that you realize this was his final series. Sure, he still made three cameos afterward; the first was the second crossover with SPD and Dino Thunder (even though he stays morphed the whole time since he could not fly back to New Zealand at the time, but it's still the thought that counts), then infamous legendary battle, and finally dimensions in danger marked his last appearance. But Dino Thunder was his final official series.
RIP JDF
sadly SPD wasn't even him with the cameo, so technically they were only two. If I remember correctly I don't even think he knew about the SPD one.
@@saiyan4414 He said they never contacted him about the SPD episode.
They used Trent's actor to voice him and a couple of archive lenes by JDF apparently for the guest spotm
Dude, I gotta say, the fighting spirit theory, let alone tommys character as a whole this season, pretty spot on, everything you said about him from tommy being trapped in his suit, to battling his old past ranger suits, all makes sense, it even makes sense as we've seen in forever red he's still active in ranger duties, not really in suit except if he needed to be, but it makes sense, he probably felt more of ranger now more than ever after literally 10 years of being a ranger, fighting evil and everything, even forgetting that before all that, he was a normal person, he forgot he was tommy Oliver, that's who he truly is, the powers and the suits are just what he use to help fight evil
I agree, the theory is pretty sound, especially since that is kinda seen in that Soul of the Dragon comic story where Tommy has his final adventure.
If theres one modern PR comic I'd love to see reviewed on AT4W, its that one. Would be a good tie-in to the HOPR DT vid.
that also would explain why he considered aiding on the research for Cyborg Dinosaurs wasn't a bad idea... maybe
It does kinda suck that the recent re-uploads and the last recent season have to reflect on the rather tragic parts of the show, but I'm glad you're being respectful to them. Thank you, Linkara. And in my head canon tommy was potentially trying to recreate the og powers given the similar designs
I know that this might not be important information for everyone (especially Linkara), but the Batman comment is even funnier when you know that Conner's actor, James Napier is actually the grandson of Alan Napier, a.k.a. Alfred from the Adam West Batman series.
Wait seriously? that fucking amazing!!!!
I mean Tommy did kill Zeltrax's adopted son in 1 episode.
He was actually genetically related to him if I recall correctly.
Uh…what?
@@Savagewolver Goldenrod, a monster Zeltrax created that kinda because his son of sorts.
Funny
“…the local nerd, or at least this show’s interpretation of a nerd, and Kira! The local guitar player, or at least this show’s interpretation of a guitar player!”
"This is the second version of History of Power Rangers"
History of Power Rangers and Knuckles if you will
Hailey does explain that she met Tommy in college, and probably told her he was a ranger during that time. Also, considering there was 8 years between Turbo and Dino Thunder, it does kinda make sense that Tommy changed his interest during college.
Alot of time what we think we want to do in our late teens/early twenties isn't what we end up doing a decade later
Think my favorite lil Stock Footage joke from this season is early on when Connor says "Ohh no they're attacking Little Tokyo" since the monster stock footage was so very clearly in Japan that this city called Reefside just has a Little Tokyo community to it. Very silly and like that had to be for older fans surely.
I mean, there are chinatowns and little indias in certain cities here in America. I mean, why not?
Everyone has “Their” Power Rangers. This and SPD were “My” Power Rangers.
Same.
Same
You’re goddamn right
I remember being in 4th grade and rewatching Dino Thunders first episode every morning for a week. It came out on Saturday and then the re-aired it each morning for a straight week to hype up the second episode that next weekend
For me, it was the latter and the one that came after that (I was only 4/5 years old at the time of spd and mystic force).
For those who don't know, Lewis ain't kidding when he says that it took much longer in the Sentai for the counterpart of the White Ranger, Abare Killer, to officially join the team. It wasn't until the final handful of episodes, and then he dies almost immediately afterward in an admittedly badass fashion that is also a narratively satisfying conclusion to his story.
thing is, Disney didn't want a ranger to be basically mostly a bad guy, which is why they had to turn him to the good side way earlier and create his evil doppelganger so they could still use Abaranger footage. Apparently they wanted to use Trent also as an antagonist for longer in the PR version, but the higher ups veto'ed that.
@@EnerKaizer That's interesting to hear about.
@@EnerKaizer I don't know if it's true but TV Tropes said that Bake+ Hunter in Ninja Storm were meant to be antagonists for longer than they ended up being which would tally if Disney didn't like the concept of 'Evil rangers'.
It's pretty much a rule that, if dinosaurs are involved, you've got yourself a good Power Rangers show 😊
Well...not exactly.Let's not forget how Dino Chargers fucked up the timestream so badly it's beyond repair
At least Dino Charge is its own Dimension, so it doesn’t mess up the continuity of the main universe.
What about the new model Q-Rex in Super Megaforce
@@DigiRangerScott One of the only legit good things about Super Megaforce
@@Ashurman666That series takes place in a different dimension. Try again
Fun fact, Snide's costume in Dino Charge is actually an upgraded version of Zeltrax's sentai counterpart
The costume originated from the movie they used for Grid Connection in Beast Morphers
Basically it's Zeltrax Maximus
Zeltrax-imus, if you will
@katherinelynch4193 sounds like The Fallens real name lol
They got pretty creative for the changes
In Abaranger, yeah Abareblack is basically the driving force of the show so makes sense to have him be Tommy.
Zeltrax isn't a character he is cursed armor that drives its wearer evil, and its worn by multiple characters, with Elsa's counterpart being the one who wears it the most.
Those monsters that work with Lothor in the team up are actually unused comic relief villains who create the monsters
52:25 Amazing how nonsense meant to sound profound could tie into something actually important, even unintentionally.
My favorite line from the first episode is right before driving away from the T-Rex. "Oh yeah, lock the doors."
he says with a car without a roof
And then he puts his seat belt on
Does anyone else feel that Dini Thunder is the perfected season of Mighty Morphin? Wise leader with an interesting backstory, kids that feel like teenagers that go on an actual arc, a story that evolves. Hell even the evil ranger arc is arguably better paced and more intriguing, I always thought Tommy would have been better not knowing he was the green ranger and make it a little more tragic. It just feels like it learnt from every mistep of MMPR .
I could have sworn that Hayley mentioned that she met Tommy while they were in college together when they originally introduced her.
She did in the 500th episode
Fun fact: Hayley was written as a lesbian, according to Jackie Marchand. She said so in an interview with TokuLadies about a decade ago.
She was to appear with a girlfriend in the final episode but somebody higher up shot it down unfortunately
You have to wait until Izzy+Fern in 2021, nearly 20 years later, for regular lesbian characters.
Dino Thunder and RPM are the best two Disney era Power Rangers seasons.
SPD and Jungle Fury were great too
@@shadowlinkbds Agreed
Mystic force and spd in my opinion
RPM is the most overrated series if you ask me.
@@maxmeidl4909 I agree that rpm is overrated it’s not bad but not the best it’s the darkest but so many seasons have covered mature topics better
29:30 my headcanon is that the morphing grid is sustaining him given how its power often keeps the rangers going in otherwise hostile environments I’d imagine its energy’s would help keep a ranger from starving to death.
Fair.
“I was unaware that dragons were dinosaurs”
I mentioned this before: in the Middle Ages, some believed that dinosaur bones were the bones of dragons. Secondly, Trent’s zord is modeled after a tepuxaura; a kind of pterosaur
also, the Japanese word for dinosaurs can also be translated as "ancient dragons", which is why many people were confused when the sentai season "Ryusoulger" (The season which would become Dino Fury) got announced, because it was believed to be a dragon themed show, nto a dinosaur one due to the weird first translation,s
@@EnerKaizer Terrifying Dragons, actually.
kinda like how the word dinosaur itself means Terrifying Lizard
I look forward to the review of SPD. The fact that Sky objects to the idea of Syd being a red ranger is even funnier nowadays since the Power Rangers series closest to when SPD is set is Cosmic Fury.
Not to mention that it'll be the first season since Time Force where Linkara doesn't have to open a video discussing a tragedy involving someone from that season - you know, fingers crossed.
He still has 1 more season in Mystic Force far as Udonna is concerned to address that.
@@stephenholloway6893 I don't recall it coming up in the original review when the actress had passed away in 2010 so before it that made in 2014, although I might be wrong. I'd imagine it would be more in passing [like Trini in the Mighty Morphin season 1 review].
@jamesatkinsonja To be fair in the original season 1 review of MMPR I don't think he didn't referenced her death either just in the new version so most likely if he's doing it again it would be when he gets done with the Mystic Force remake. Point is that at the very least he has acknowledged ranger deaths eventhough is Pua and JDF's cases they were recent or other issues like with Cole's actor in the Wild Force remake so it's possible that if he dies bring it up it would be there. Sure he originally did Mystic Force in 2013 and she passed away in 2010 but at the time he didn't really want to bring up any cast members death.
I didn't realize this when you previously mentioned it, but I'm guessing the distorted audio in Legacy of Power is because they had to remove the music. I know at the time it wasn't common to keep separate audio files so the only ones they had must of had the music and dialogue together in one file. The distortion is probably caused by them digitally removing the music in some way.
"Women are just grown-up girls."
"You got a problem with that?"
One of my top favorite Power Rangers series. Also JDF was probably the nicest celebrity I’ve ever met. I remember going to a Comic Con in Rhode Island and when I went to his panel I remember him saying he didn’t care if we recorded the panel. I asked him what the hardest thing to do on set was and he said “Not to actually punch somebody” later that day I went to his booth and he gave me and my sister free autographs we didn’t ask for. He was the most selfless celebrity I’ve ever met and when I heard he passed away I was in complete shock
Dino Thunder is easily one of my favorite PR seasons. Really good cast of characters, awesome zords, great music, fantastic villains, especially from Mesogog, and just great action and development overall. Very great season.
I couldn't agree more.
15:35 That Sarcastic Tommy line being a throwback to a way previous episode with Tommy.
Tommy Oliver's age will forever be the biggest mystery of this franchise
Disagree
The BIGGEST mystery will still be "what in the world happened to the ZEO powers?!?!?!"
The whole "powers get too strong" is only a fan theory that got popular.the original writers of the show still haven't given a explanation and I don't believe they ever will haha
@@Brandonweifu perhaps the siphoning of the zeo powers gave Tommy reduced aging ability
Kat was originally also going to return but they couldn't afford to bring both Frank and Sutherland.
She either would have filled the Haley role or the Elsa role after being brainwashed
if she filled the Elsa role, man it would have been straight out of Abaranger, where Elsa's counterpart was actually the black ranger's wife (his brother in law also wore the zeltrax armor in early episodes and his daughter was possessed by the main villain for a good bulk of it)
It's a nice idea but it probably was best in general just going with Tommy solo as back when DT was made like how Linkara said 'the hexagon' idea in the ninja storm video wasn't feasible [as oppose to more recent series like Cosmic Fury where streaming allows more references/returning characters as new viewers can catch up easier].
Then it would narrow which ship is canon
Tommy and Kat but we prefer Tommy and Kimi
At least from a story point of view have either Kim or Kat would had made sense but from a budget point of view it couldn't be done.
So, weird fact about the original Sentai. In bakaryu Sentai abaranger, the white ranger was a doctor, but if you look at his main weapon it somewhat resembles a quil, as well, during the scene where he made those arrows of light, the English version cut a scene where he wrote his name in the air.
What are you talking about? He was a doctor
@@willpark111 thank you for the correction.
He also died near the end of abaranger in ep 48,fun fact he died in the exact ep count as the secondary rider from kamen rider 555 who was a big asshole, that was airing the same year as Abaranger
@@Josh-qt5ziHuh. I knew they aired in the same year, but I never realized that they both lost a character in their 48th episodes.
Another interesting fact: Kusaka's actor, Kohei Murakami, would eventually go on to play Bud/Zyuoh Bird in Zyuohger.
Starting with a Sentai Fun fact. The Zords were actually full sentient and could talk (making it better they weren’t destroyed there and just went back to Dino Earth and yes that was a thing) and the second time the Stego went with Abarekiller (the White Ranger) it’s because he liked the power of being Killer-Oh instead of just being a surfboard for Aberan-Oh (the Megazords)
Regarding the Trent losing his powers and having to get them back from the clone. That very plot line would happen the very next year in Kamen Rider where in the fourth Rider started off under the control of one of the villains because the powers came from sealing monsters in to cards and the Ace card used to transform him had a weaker seal to cause the monster within to take control. Then the card broke and the monster was freed allowing then young hero control of himself again and he helped the tertiary Rider to seal the monster once again and this time allowing the kid full control.
Hey, maybe Dino Thunder takes place on Dino Earth…
@maxmeidl4909 If that's the case then what about Ninja Storm since it's in their "universe" as well. Let alone how Tommy managed to get information on his time as a ranger from MMPR to Turbo then the 2nd half of Turbo onward to Wild Force. So would all of those seasons took place on "Dino Earth" as well? If Disney chose to make the zords talk as well then maybe at best but I doubt it in this case.
45:27 "Too much Pink Energy is Dangerous!"
I still love that moment.
“Tommy explains she went through an invisi-portal, which was completely visible, so the name makes no sense” Ah no other sentence encapsulates Power Rangers like this does.
You know, Dino Thunder was my introduction to Tommy Oliver. So you could say that his passing made me want to revisit the series again and I'm glad that I did. It does make his characters mental state hit a bit differently today though.
It was sad hearing Jason David Frank passing away in 2022
Like beforehand Kevin Conroy who was the best Batman voice passed away and Nicki aycox who played Meg in supernatural season 1 passed away
R.I.P Jason David Frank.
I didn't realise how much they dragged out Tommy not appearing unmorphed.😅
Well you work with what you have and the spirit journey is still one of the coolest Power Rangers moments.
I think your theory about Tommy’s psyche is further supported by the Soul of the Dragon graphic novel.
“I was unaware Dragons were Dinosaurs” Well to be fair we accepted it with Tommy back when he was the OG Green Ranger 😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜
What's funny about the comment about the Tyrannodrones being related to the Stingwingers... they actually recycled the costumes of the Stingwingers to make them.
All the comments in this show about Tommy being this old-timer who's still got it are kind of hilarious when you consider the character couldn't be older than thirty at this point. 😂
Also, the most recent sourcebook for the Power Rangers Roleplaying Game includes a lot of content from Dino Thunder and Dino Charge, and the flavour text for the Tyrannodrones' statblock offers an explanation for why Tommy made them: they were originally created to be a labour force until Mesogog took control of them for his army. Don't know why Tommy decided we needed biomechanical dinosaur mutants for that, but it's there.
My FAVORITE Power Rangers series! I love Dino Thunder, Trent is my favorite ranger ever, love the action, the characters, and the villains!
Because Tommy always been into *rolls dice* Archeology!
- stolen from SFDebris
Lol yes career changes can be a thing but I recall even that being a joke with Tommy way back then.
Odd dice rolls explains why he's been into Kim, then Kat, then racing, then paleontology, until finally becoming a multiversal punching bag with Lord Drakkon.
39:33 She may suck at the evil henchwoman thing, but compare “Drawn Into Danger” to “Day of the Dino.” In the latter, Connor skips class to goof around playing soccer, but by the former, he has a permit to use the soccer field. Showing that he’s actually making the effort to follow the rules. That, to me at least, shows that Elsa’s actually doing a pretty good job as principal, and I find the irony in that hilarious. 😂
It shows just how much kids television devolved that it took ten and a half years to reach 500 episodes, only to not reach 1000 at all in the next NINETEEN years
I wouldn't say devolved but it shows how much shorter content has gotten first you had the 50 ep rule so the show would be syndicated then it go to 40 but then for animation 20 eps became a requirement and weekly airing (unless you where an anime) didn't happen and then you have 12 eps per season for animated shows even with invincible a teen show it has a short ep count
It's not so much 'devolved' as changing practices/ideas given the earlier Saban shows were around 50 episodes per season but the later Disney ones were 30+ then that went down to 20 for Samurai onwards. Similar to how most 'network' adult TV shows used to have long 20+ episode seasons [the original Star Trek had a 29 episode season 1] but HBO/Streaming often has only around 10 episodes [like with Cosmic Fury].
@@jamesatkinsonja Okay yeah, kids television practices SURROUNDING Power Rangers.

Regardless of JDF's passing, you raise a good point. Tommy, if you're going to make cyborg dinosaurs for any reason, 9 times out of 10, that is so you can be a supervillain. Did Kimberley dumping you hurt THAT much?
There's a rumour I've been hearing for years that might explain the oddity of Tommy having a Ph.D in this season. Simply put, originally, the Black Ranger was not intended to be Tommy, but rather a brand new character who would have the connection to Mercer and become the Rangers' teacher and mentor. At some point, it was decided to make the character a previous Ranger, and the decision was made to bring in Tommy to capitalize on his popularity. Unfortunately, I can't remember where this rumour started, but I DO remember people talking about it as if it was fact, and it WOULD explain the strangeness of Tommy suddenly being a doctor.
I can imagine that to be true given how JDF said he did the show as a 'favour' as the ratings were declining, but if he said no they still would be making it anyway [I'd guess it was probably Tommy or nothing for a returning past ranger].
Imagine if it were Billy Cranston instead of Tommy. I could see Billy as Dino Black and a mentor type who creates all this technology. Man made a flying car in his garage in high school AND spent time on another planet with an advanced alien race. Plus he retired sooner than the others and would have had time to accomplish his degree
@@richborn6700 Billy woulda made way more sense in the role of high school professor.
@@richborn6700 Of course we had Billy as the mentor eventually in Cosmic Fury. I remember it being mentioned [at the start of 'Dino Charge'] that writer James W. Bates wanted Billy as the teacher/mentor in MegaForce [which became 'Mr Burley'].
Yeah but since Doug and Ann was there in during David's time before he left I doubt that Yost would had come back at the time if of course they took part in what drove him to leave back in Zeo.
Every time I see Linkara upload a new History of Power Rangers video, it always puts a smile on my face.
38:06 I would counter that the Ranger battle in part 2 made up for some of that. You notice that the Ninja Storm Rangers are almost all beaten back or knocked down by the evil forces, and the Dino Rangers have to help them out. Shane gets knocked down, and Connor goes Triassic Battilizer to help him. Cam is sent sprawling and Trent jumps in to help him. Yeah, the Thunders do well against Zurgane, but it’s Tommy who gets to deliver the finishing blow.
Honestly Linkara your History of Power Rangers is honestly one of best series on UA-cam ever
19:04 Actually, Tommy did not get the Stegazord back. Basically, he was able to mess with the White Ranger’s control of the Zord enough to separate it from the Drago Zord, but even he admitted the White Ranger’s hold over it was too strong and he couldn’t break it, meaning the White Ranger kept the Stegazord.
If anything, I’d compare Cassidy to Cordelia Chase from the early seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, before her move to Angel where she became a full on hero.
Great redo of the old vid bud, keep up the good work :)
Here's a bit of a fun fact some don't know, Ethan's actor Kevin Duhaney voices Cameron in both Total Drama Revenge of the Island & TD All Stars.
Ethan was also in Four Brothers starring Mark Wahlberg
R.I.P JDF. Now on to more silly stuff. When looking back at "Lost and Found in Translation" I can't help but be reminded of the episode "Delusional Imports" from Season 2 of Akibaranger where the villains create a delusion where Super Sentai was actually an import of the American show "Powerful Rangers". It is all kinds of cringe and hilarious and is the source of the "HEY SUSHI" meme that you may have seen floating around the fandom. As for Dino Thunder itself it's been a few years since I've seen it. I remember watching it just for Tommy but it was a good show over all, public domain music aside. But yes it will be just a tad awkward seeing it these days after JDF's passing, especially Fighting Spirit. But hoooo boy will I have a few words to say when we get to S.P.D, mostly ragging about the flaws of the Kalish era. But until then May the Power protect you all.
This might be controversial, but quite frankly, I think SPD is highly underrated as a season! Especially in the Disney era! Can’t wait for that video! The story of Sky is great! He wanted to make his father proud and that’s why he was so adamant about training!

One other reason that there was the White Ranger clone might have been so they wouldn't have to make Trent evil for most of the series, which in Power Rangers, makes sense since I think it would be painful to see Trent struggle with brainwashing for a whole season. I read that the reason why he stayed evil for as long as he did in Abaranger was that there were initially no plans to have him be redeemed, but toy sales deterred them from keeping him an enemy.

While Lightspeed will always be my favorite, Dino Thunder was basically my MMPR. This was the first season I was watching while it aired in full and seeing the unfolding story like it was felt exciting to me. I love all the characters, the zords were made of pure awesome, and everything about this show just clicked for me. This was the MMPR of my generation, and it's great to revisit it with History of Power Rangers.
Good to see this back. When Dino Thunder originally came out it was the first series I'd watched in years (I checked out early on in Turbo, oddly before the veteran Rangers left) and yeah, I came back for Tommy... and stayed for Kira too, which is apparently a common response. Jason David Frank will always be my hero. May the Power protect him forever.
My first and absolute favorite season of the show. Conner, Ethen, and Kira are some of my favorite characters and rangers of all time, and my exposer to what a teenager could be like and how one can grow, especially Ethen as I was a nerd growing up myself. Trent too became my favorite Ranger ever for his character arc and because he was a fellow artist.
And Tommy. I doubt I’m alone in this experience, but because this was my first season, I did not have the context of MMPR or anything else involving his character, so this was my first exposure, and I remember being…fascinated. I saw him as this almost mysterious figure, a veteran with an intense past that we only glimpsed (because I was very small and dumb child when I saw this so I somehow didn’t connect there were shows before this) every so often, and that he knew so much more then any of the other characters to the point where I wanted to know more. Both as his time as a ranger, and his past in relation to the other characters in this show.
I just really love this season.
- Tomy confirming he color codes his clothing on purpose is amazing
- i love Lost & Found in Translation, it just give us a complete zoom out on Connor's character: yes, he's a himbo. yes, he's very quick to make wrong assumptions and keep saying them... but he's not a bad person & he's willing to be proven wrong & learn from it (sadly we didn't get any funny callback to Abaranger afterwards considering Connor binged the whole show)
- honestly, i dig the Dino Thunder suits, you can clearly see they're a tribute to the Mighty Morphin & would look wrong without the logo
- is actually pretty funny how much of an Overachiever thev Mighty Morphin team were back in their teens compared to the Dino Thunder gang
- thing is Disney was still publishing games when the show came out so they could have had Ethan reference those at least
As someone who HAS BEEN Archiving this series, it is always amazing to hear and compare these versions. I love hearing a familiar joke in these new versions
In hindsight there's several callbacks to Tommy's past either directly or indirectly with Conner for example getting an backup Megazord like in Zeo for Tommy that's mostly exclusive to the Red Ranger Tommy's Dino Thunder morpher via his Turbo days with the key and Trent becoming evil then good via Tommy's green ranger days. Plus Trent's color White just like Tommy was before he became Red.
This literally came out exactly when I started watching his videos again😂
Now all you need is the rerecordings of SPD & Mystic Force, as well as the re-edit of RPM & you'll be good on HOPR.
This is awesome, I never expected this on such a random day lmao
Edit: Kira being surprised by her fighting ability in my opinion was to show that every team would get a baseline civilian power, agility and slightly enhanced strength and speed so they can keep up with their skills outside ranger form
I maintain my headcanon that the reason why Tommy was trying to fuse Dino DNA with technology was to make the Biozords, I think Tommy was always planning on making a new team of power rangers, or being able to when the situation called for it. The Tyranodrones, in addition to simply being an experiment, could act as assistants to those, helping fight foot soldiers or evacuate civilians, similar to how the original Dino Fury rangers were implied to have used the Hengemen. It's just that the whole situation with Anton meant that things didn't quite go the way he planned.
Trent's power is blending in like a chameleon, while tommy's power is invisibility. Both are similar but different
42:01 you know, since the lab is on Tommy’s property and is technically is basement. I wonder what if his insurance policy covers damage and destruction by supervillain? Though I wonder if he had it rebuilt all those years later? Considering that he still lives there 20 years later.
Believe it or not, I was re-watching the entire HOPR series when I saw this one in my feed. I'd gotten all the way up to Dino Fury when I saw this one.
I do buy into the theory of Tommy draining his Zeo crystal to forge the Dino Morphers, but not entirely draining it. Unless he re-formed the powers and weapons from scratch, he would still need sections of it to make the Zeo powers for his Master Morpher.

38:26, “it also has some *Badly* used explosions which is something I’ll get into next time”
Can we get a hype fest started for his remake of the SPD review and getting ready to witness his “updated” Explosion Rant all these years later from his original SPD review? :)
I'm adding and refining it to better explain what I mean by it, especially in regards to editing and repetition of the shots. 10+ years helps me be a better critic, hopefully! XD
8:27 And Reefside has a Tokyo district apparently.
Makes about as much sense as an abandoned warehouse district.
@John73John aswell as breathable air on the moon and in space.
I have been following you since the original dino thunder video... Rewatching it for the third time
It's awesome to see how much thought and analysis Linkara does on each one of these seasons and videos really
This was my Power Rangers, and I’m glad to revisit it with this video
Ah memories of _Power Rangers; Dino Thunder,_ made me absolutely love the series again before _SPD._
You know james napier is the great grandson of the adam west Alfred was there no room 4 the reference
So something that was point out to me that i thought was pretty interesting. Each of Tommy's main Zords sort of Line up with the 4 Cardinal Beasts
Dragonzord-Azure Dragon
White Tiger-White Tiger
Phoenix/Falcon- Vermilion Bird
Brachozord-Black Tortoise
26:54 Wait, the Triassic Ranger is a form that requires two partners to give out their energy in order to activate?
Is the Triassic Ranger a Drive Form from Kingdom Hearts?
I just found this playlist yesterday and just finished ninja storm. What a coincidence that you just uploaded this right now.
I agree, Dino Thunder's theme is a lot of fun.
I've found it stuck in my head several times over the last couple of days after rewatching some episodes.
Hindsight is honestly a hilarious thing, because, when you said that line questioning Tommy about how normally someone would only think of merging Dino DNA and technology to become a villain, I immediately thought of Lord Drakkon from the Shattered Grid comics, made all the funnier since he IS an evil version of Tommy.
Funnily enough, the reason I mentioned Dino Thunder's theme has gotten itself stuck in my head several times recently is because, 2 weeks ago, I happened to find Dino Thunder volume 1 at a charity store called Savers.
Aside from the bottom of the cover being a little damaged, it worked fine and, since I'd already been watching volume one, since I didn't have volume 2, I watched my copy of volume 3 White Thunder, which I also got second-hand almost 2 decades ago now at one of my old primary school's Gala Days.
So, watching Dino Thunder so much kinda got the theme stuck in my head for a while, not that I'm complaining, of course
