    I also recently got a south pole although the micarta scales on mine are more dark grey than the rusty brownish or natural colour yours looks. But I know this... this guy has a real talent. Not many knife makers have standards as high as these knives. Only my Chris Reeve knives equal them for fit and finish but I don't like the design of the Chris Reeve fixed blades. They are usually too big and I find the handles very uncomfortable with badly placed finger grooves (none would be better on the Pacific and GB). Trc however also make this perfectly sized knife and the design is classic and timeless and the finger groove also works on this knife. I like the handmade touch of Trc. Chris Reeve fixed blades feel sterile and machine made. So even Chris Reeve is a distant 2nd now IMO. if I was to go all in I'd say he is currently making the best knives in the world. You can tell he puts 100% into every knife. And that's exactly how it should be and a company can't manage that they should go into a different business or just make £50 knives. He is setting the bar as far as I'm concerned and my south pole certainly won't be my last Trc. The mille cuori is next on my wish list.

      Thank you, Lloyd! I'm still trying to work out a good "review-format" of sorts for my videos; with a nice balance of doing/performing different kind of knife related tasks, some variety in settings, comparisons of different knife-models etc. Give me some time, and I'll be able to make some really good video reviews in the near future! Oh, and I bet you have all the snow in Canada, that I'd love to have in Sweden right now. ;)

      Thank you! Yes, this is indeed a very versatile knife, especially given its small size. It's a new favorite of mine, for sure. I do think I mention the K1 somewhere in my video, stating that it was indeed the predecessor to the South Pole. I know I'm a bit late to the party, but it is what it is. My journey with the South Pole starts now, and I'm fine with that. :)

    Solid review! No no need to explain how many closeups of the knife there are in this vid; it's a beauty! I saw this knife a few months ago online and I'm still debating on getting it. I found it with G10 handle scales, and also a denim micarta that looks slightly blue in color. Just a sweet knife with my favorite blade finish, and I love that it has such a high grind on it!

    Greetings from the US. ... We've previously exchanged thoughts about the TRC This Is Freedom knife. ... Based on your excellent, comprehensive testing and review, I decided to add a South Pole to my battery of blades, should one become available. Yesterday, several TRC knives popped up for sale online and I ordered a South Pole. It should ship later today and be in my possession a couple days from now. Of course acquiring a TRC knife is a life-altering event. LOL. I'm pretty excited to add a very versatile, low maintenance gem to my stable. Undoubtedly, it will supplant many lesser blades, once treasured, but now surpassed. Of course my desire for ever more superior cutlery is in the interest of science too, as is yours! ... Thanks again for this compelling video. I always look forward to your amazing videos. Take good care my friend.

      Hey Martin! Thank you very much for your kind words! I'm very happy to hear you managed to score a South Pole. It's a fantastic knife, and it has quickly become my number one "kayaking-knife". And I'll have to agree with you on acquiring a TRC-knife being a life-altering event ... at least the first one you get. ;) The desire for ever more superior cutlery is both a blessing and a curse, and with some of my knives, especially some of my TRC-knives, I feel unsure just as to how they could be improved. One thing is certain, though, the quest for the perfect knife/knives will never end, regardless of how great a tool you get your hands on ... Once again, thank you for dropping by here!

    so now you've had them both for a while which do you prefer between this and the apocalypse? id also like to get the apocalypse but it is always out of stock every time i look. the mille couri is next on my list though. i don't know what it is about trc but they just really appeal to me. i've got dozens of knives by all different makers but the south pole is my absolute favourite. yes it is fairly expensive but when you compare it to many other knives of this quality using top materials they usually cost much more. so i think you get a lot for your money and IMO they are very reasonably priced. i paid more or less the same for my bradford guardian 4.5 but i was really disappointed with it. the tip was rounded off and there were grind lines running deep into the choil from where they had run further than the edge when putting the edge on it i presume, and against the stonewashed dlc coating it really shines and stands out. apart from looking rubbish it also leaves an area where corrosion can get in. i just expect a lot more from a knife that cost £250 than that. i expect them to be able to get those little details right. maybe most ppl wouldn't care about things like that but if you are spending £250 it is because you do care. the handle is also far too long and the sheath is absolute rubbish. it isn't fit for purpose and if anything it is actually dangerous. and it is by no means the only expensive knife in my collection with such issues. but i'm fairly confident that if i order another trc that it will arrive flawless. i just wish more makers had the same quality control. trc shows that it can be done. there is no reason why any other company can't do the same. Mr Trisius obviously respects his customers more than most. i suppose that is why they are always out of stock.

      Heh, this is a pretty long video, so watching it more than once is indeed pretty dedicated. ;) In regards to your question though; I've had no traces of corrosion on neither my Apocalypse nor on my South Pole. I do take pretty good care of my knives, and I wipe them off when I've done food prep with them. Still, Elmax is my favorite stainless steel. Both M390 and CTS-204P are even more corrosion resistant, with better edge holding too, but you'll have to work harder once it's time to sharpen them. ;)

      @@PinkG10 Haha, yep, it is just a very solid review. And it is fun to watch. So well done!
      Great, that is good to hear. I know certain heat teat on elmax can make it less corrosive resistant than it is intended by Uddeholm.

      I had the old K1 in M390 but changed my mind on DLC coating and sold it. This South Pole looks like such a refined version of that.

    Mine arrived today and I really wanted to love it, but will be sending it back. The rock hard textured handle is so uncomfortable that I couldn’t use this knife unless wearing gloves. Also, because they just slap fabricated handle scales on so they don’t have to hand finish them, the scales are smaller than the tang, creating another uncomfortable transition unless you are wearing gloves. I’ll stick with Bark Rivers.

    Thanks! Usually I run across the review I should have watched AFTER my purchase (for instance, I had already committed to Apocalypse before I found your Apoc review). I'm going to try and compare the South Pole to the M390 K1 as both are available for me here. Thanks for the review. I tend to prefer a full flat grind or 90% like the SP. In large knives, I have a 100% FFG large chopper (7.5mm at spine) from Busse in the old INFI nitrogen steel so my big knife bases are loaded and I am looking more critically at medium-length knives. Also, I am one of those bushcraft / fieldcraft heretics that just isn't getting The Joy from Fällkniven...so...big hands. Do you think that Fällkniven will ever make man-sized handles or will they forever be the bushcraft choice of youth, women, and elves...?

      @@christopherskipp1525 I don't know about the k1. As far as I know he's no longer making them. The only difference between the k1 and South pole as far as I can see it that the scales on the SP are textured while the k1 is just flat slabs. I don't where you are ordering from but in Europe I'd recommend knives and tools. I've had countless items from them and always excellent service. If you are north American your best bet would probably be bushcraft Canada. I know Paul Robinson definitely stocks trc knives. But if anyone still has k1 in stock it must be old stock which surprises me considering how fast his knives sell whenever a retailer gets them in stock. All the best.

      @@PinkG10 I agree with ur assessment, however I personally don't think an all around camp/field/hunting knife needs to be thicker than 3mm. The Elmax is certainly a good choice for this knife being stainless steel. I am also a fan of AEB-L steel for the same reason & also easier to sharpen in the field. A sharpened spine for ferro rod sparks would also be preferred. The finger choil is a tad to deep on the South Pole design for my liking but i can look past this if it is as comfortable as you say it is for long continuous use.

    • @PinkG10
      @PinkG10  4 роки тому +3

      I don't have any issues with the blade thickness being 4.5mm, but I fully understand what you're saying and where you're coming from. I do have a ton of smaller sized knives (smaller and same size as the SP) which are a lot thinner, but despite being 4.5mm, the South Pole still performs just as fine as many of those. I also think Elmax works very well for this specific model, but if I had to pick another steel-type, I'd have gone CPM-3V or possibly CPM-154. CPM-3V due to its toughness, edge retention and being semi-easy to sharpen, but lacking the real corrosion resistance of a stainless steel. Still, I do find my CPM-3V blades to provide some corrosion resistance depending on what you do to do the blade and how you take care of it (not talking about some random patina now). CPM-154 would have been less corrosion resistant than Elmax, with less edge retention, but easier to sharpen and, depending on heat treatment, potentially tougher. Regarding sharpened spines; I have very, very few knives with sharpened 90 degree spines. The only ones I have with rounded spines, however, are the Apocalypse and the South Pole. I prefer the spine the way it's on the South Pole, both in apperance but also ergonomically. But there's, however, no denying that a sharpened spine will make it easier to throw sparks using a ferro rod. Lastly, I don't know about the finger groove/choil being too deep, I guess that'll be up to personal preferences? I'm happy the way it currently is, especially since any finger groove-design like this is a potential deal breaker for me. I'm just happy that it works so well regardless of how I hold the knife. Had it felt/been any different, then this review would have been A LOT different. Kind of an interesting thought tbh ...

    • @bossmodus5020

      The TRC South pole has 0.0197 inch behind the cutting edge which is a very good value for an all-purpose knife with 4.5 mm. The blade geometry and how well it is executed is at least as important as the blade thickness itself. Trc does an excellent job here! I own well over 10 knives from TRC in terms of processing, heat treatment, blade geometry, fit and finish... Better than Bark River better than Hinderer, TRC sets the latte very high.
      If TRC were a US company, the knives would already be world famous and easily cost twice as much. Trust me once you have a TRC in your hand then you know what I mean👌

      @@bossmodus5020 THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS INFO GOOD SIR!!! I've been looking all over to try to find the behind-the-edge thickness and hardly anybody ever mentions those VERY important specs! So thank for posting that as that's exactly what I was looking for.
      I'm honestly surprised not many people apparently even think about that as blade geometry is more important than almost anything when it comes to cutting performance. I mean, who cares what uber steel it has or what mythical HT it's gone through if it's basically a sharpened crowbar?!
      I'm very interested in hearing what models you have from TRC as I don't have any yet but was considering them as a top contender for my bushcraft style and small to medium sized knife desires.
      I've been looking at this South Pole, the This is Freedom, the smaller Classic Freedom, and also the Apocalypse.
      Fallkniven has of course been something I've been thinking about, mainly their Pro line for the F1 and A1, but the overly thick blades make me worry about cutting performance. I like the convex style edge, however I have no idea how thick they get near the edge.
      I've also been considering the Spyderco Zoomer and the Spyderco Proficient as both seem like great bushcraft style knives. Sharpening that Zoomer model with its appleseed grind does concern me a bit though.... Will it ever look good again after a few resharpenings? Will it be any more a pain to sharpen than a typical convex edge?
      The new Spyderco Province also looks to be a good contender for the TRC Apocalypse. I'd like to see a head to head of those in terms of performance. No doubt TRC will be top in fit and finish (not that Spyderco is any slouch there) but the Spyderco's geometry and steel choice seem like it'd be a fantastic performer.
      Anyways, I'd love to hear more about your TRC knives if you care to share.

      @PinkG10  4 роки тому +2

      They're pretty different knives, although with some similarities. If you're not going to do any super tough stuff, like chopping or batoning thick pieces of wood, then I'd go with the South Pole. It's a excellent light weight option, that can do pretty much anything you can ask from a knife in this size (or even slightly bigger). However, if you know for a fact that you're going to do a lot of chopping, batoning and heavy branching/de-limbing, then do consider the Apocalypse as your first choice. If I could only own one of the two ... That's a real tough question, tbh. I think I'm leaning towards the South Pole right now, but that can change from one day to another ...

      @@PinkG10 Thank you very much for your answer, Sir. One last thing, considering the South Pole as perhaps an edc knife, more than the Apocalypse obviously, I am hesitating between this one and the Gunny Hunter from Bark River in cpm3v. I can't recall if you had this one in your hands but if you did or maybe from what you heard about it, would you recommend the gunny hunter or the south pole? Thanks a lot for your videos by the way!

    • @PinkG10
      @PinkG10  4 роки тому +3

      I don't own the Gunny Hunter, but I do own the "regular" Gunny in CPM-3V. The Gunny, and Gunny Hunter, are both nice knives, no doubt about it. Many people regard the Gunny (Hunter) as their favorite BRK-model, but I never fell in love with it in that way. I do think it's a good knife, in a useful size, with great steel (if you go with CPM-3V or Elmax) and full convex is ofc always a plus in my book. I also believe the Gunny to be one of the best selling models by Bark River. I will say, though, that the Gunny-models are VERY different from the South Pole. I, personally, would pick the South Pole over the Gunny (Hunter). With that being said, there are other models by Bark River that I would potentially pick over the South Pole ... Still, the South Pole is a new favorite knife of mine, and I'm sure it'll see A TON of use from now on, and I really do recommend it!

    I commented on your bark river video, I have a esee junglas for heavy work and looking for a new bushcraft knife I've narrowed it to the bark river aurora and this south pole, I've read some comments on here about the gunny hunter but between the south pole and Aurora which one can you recommend, cheers

    • @PinkG10
      @PinkG10  4 роки тому +1

      I just replied to your other comment in the Aurora-video, and I hope you find that reply somewhat useful. You didn't mention the Gunny Hunter in your other comment, so let me give you my two cents about it here: I'm personally not the biggest fan of the Gunny, Gunny Hunter, Gunny LT or any Gunny-version in any steel tbh. It's by no means a bad knife, in fact, it's one of the most popular models by BRK, loved by A TON of people. But it's not really a knife for me, personally. I'd pick the Mini-Aurora or Aurora LT over it any day of the week, and many other models as well. Like I stated in my other comment, I really do think you should try to get your hands on TRC-knife one day, since they're among the finest knives you can get your hands on, as well as knives with the highest quality consistency I've seen. Great users too, ofc. But the South Pole is NOT a dedicated bushcraft-knife the way that the Aurora-knives are, so that's something to take into consideration ...

      @@PinkG10 yeh thanks just replied to your other comment, yeh I've seen every one loves the gunny but it just doesn't do it for me like the aurora and south pole does, as I said in my other comment I'm looking for a knife that will do everything other than baton as I have my junglas for so in that regard looks like it is the south pole I'm going for but I think I'm gonna get an Aurora aswell for my birthday next year, thanks again for both replies hand I wish you the best on future content thanks again.

      If fit and finish doesn't bother you then go with either. But if it does the trc wins hands down. Trc knives feel exclusive... you can tell he only makes a few knives each week but puts 100% into every one. On the other hand you can definitely feel bark rivers ambition to turn out 1000 knives every week. 1000 maybe but I won't ever be buying another one.

    So many people putting $$$ knives on review and batonning! It's just funny to me because you can baton with a butter knife if you have to... This is 'beater knife' turf. All full tang knives can all 'do' it but if I had two knives with me, the crappier knife will always be the batonning victim.

      Haaahaha, yes. Honestly, I'm not one of 'those' axe people that crap on batonning. I have a decent axe collection and certainly tools for splitting wood for the home. In the woods, I'm a knife guy. My nickname has more to do with the fact that I was throwing double bit axes in a Scandinavian manner back when it wasn't cool. Just moved but my old place had a decent range set up for axe and knife throwing. (Never throw axes at live trees, please. It is abusive to these majestic old soldiers of the forest.)
      Just not a real common pursuit in the community I was in, hence the nickname.

      I have both. South Pole is like 15% bigger across the board, otherwise they are identical geometry and materials. Both micarta scales but my K-1S is black and the South Pole the natural light brown color seen here. Mine are both 2021s. Only difference I see from my South Pole to the one reviewed here is I have the apocalyptic finish on the steel and the handle rivets are hollowed out.

      To be honest, and as I stated in the video, I'm not much for doing tip tests at all. I think I've skipped that in most videos since this one. Still, this is perhaps better than nothing, since no other videos show any tip tests on the South Pole. And yes, birch is indeed a soft wood, like most European tree types aside from oak and a very few others.

      I don't really have a problem performing batoning-tests etc., but I don't enjoy it very much. Sometimes some light batoning can be usueful, imo. Regardless, I know this knife will handle batoning with ease. I'm not the biggest fan of tip-tests though, but I decided to go for it just to show that the tip will hold up to some "abuse" of sorts. All in all; I mainly use my knife for light camp-chores, some random wood carving and, most of all, food prep. But that's me.

    wow....nice review. How about making a fire with this knife? you know, a task a survival/bush craft knife should be used for? how does it feather stick? how does is work with a ferro rod? How does is shave wood for tinder? How does it carve? ....all you did was chop fruit and veg, a task for a KITCHEN knife. Useless review.

    • @PinkG10
      @PinkG10  3 роки тому +2

      Well, Alex, I didn't force you to watch this review, you know. And if you had taken two seconds and watched the time stamps, you could have easily seen if this was the review you wanted to watch or not. In regards to your question about feathers, why don't you take a quick look at the time stamp 21:33. Oh, and if you think this knife won't carve, then I don't know what to say tbh. As for striking a ferro rod, I always bring a small striking steel for that, but you can use the knife too. I don't use this knife to "survive out in the wild", I use it to do food prep, baton wood, doing minor branching etc. and I also use it because it has great ergonomics for me. I tend to bring stormproof matches with me as well as my Trangia-set when I'm out camping. I hope you find a video-review which is more to your liking.
