double face AD cards in the packs are so bad, make then be a token 100% of times
100% this. Deliver less value to your actual customers (at the same cost of goods) so that you can advertise to the non-existent theoretical customer who opens Magic, but has never heard of arena.

WHY even AD cards exist. Should be the same to print. It 100% tokens before, why change that.
I came here to say the same thing, nowadays boosters are way too expensive for double ad cards 😕
You always say that you want booster openings to be fun, this is the opposite of fun!
I think the team did a great job with Thunder Junction, it really feels like a homerun set. I can't wait to draft it!
My favorite reason for why you plot face up is that you're giving an evil monologue (think doofenschmirtz, or any cartoon villain really)
I really like the common desert duals! Dealing a point of damage as they enter is awesome!
Having most of my cards push towards a win condition is how I want to build my decks, so these are an obvious replacement for any life gain duals in PDH for me.
I would've thought that 1 life gained yourself in commander is worth more than damaging 1 of the other 3 players for 1 damage

I noticed something in the artwork for this set. A severe lack of cowboy hats! How can you do a cowboy season and not put a hat on everyone?

While I am hyped for the set Im really really disappointed that those Play Boosters are so expensive while also being the worst of both previous worlds.
I especially looked in this video how many rares and mythics he had per booster and it feels like less booster than previous set booster have multiple rares / mythics.
recently I opened a streets of new capenna set booster box and murders at karlov manor play booster box back to back and the streets of new capenna felt like being so much more packed with rares and mythics despite having 6! boosters less.
Further the tons of ADD cards were bullsh*t!
During our Murders at Karlov Manor box we had way to few tokens!
I hope this set drafts better than the previous play booster set else, I wont buy any new boxes and try to accumulate older draft boxes for less money than new Play booster.
I always look forward to these reviews from you. I enjoy your personal insight into the design.

Wish we got more stories from the dev era - but a great look at the set
Not gonna lie, my first Mtg experience was during Masques block and I was one of those poor newbs trying so hard to make Mercenaries work during that block. Seeing so many viable Mercenaries in this set makes me look forward to breaking out a few of the old ones to mix in a typal Rakdos (or even Mardu) commander deck.

Tarnation, this was a good way to spend nearly two hours.
As others have said, I'm really excited for the Prerelease of this set. I think there's going to be some interesting limited games, with a bunch of sweet new mechanics.
I really hope the Prerelease kits have some number of tokens included, like treasure, mercenary, ox. Opening up zero Mysterious Creature tokens in both of my Prereleases of MKM was a bad experience.
Used Infinitokens to help on the second day, but Play Boosters do not have enough actual tokens for actually playing the cards that create the tokens.
Please forward criticism of including the strictly ad cards (no token on either side) as a terrible practice to keep on doing. They just go straight in the trash (most don't bother to recycle them, even though they can be), and are a waste of cardboard.
WotC can and should do better to care about the environment with regards to the packaging of booster packs, and I really like the recycleable paper wrapper for the promo cards in the Prerelease kit.
Ad cards are just a slap in the face and 3 steps back in comparison. Rodeo.

It's just like chess, except sometimes one player opens triple Queen, the Queen that puts 2 other Queen tokens into play, while the other guy opens a foil pawn. You know, chess - like Richard Garfield intended.
Highly doubt you’ll read this but since you’re the magic man, I beg of you… when the final fantasy set comes out please have a golden saucer land that makes mountable chocobos with different keywords based on what you roll. I feel like that would be a perfect card for the set and I also really wanna be able to build a chocobo commander deck.

Thank you for the content. I really enjoy hearing about the design aspect of things. You offer a unique perspective that fans of MTG can truly appreciate. If I can offer some constructive criticism it would be to play with your lighting adjustments. There is a bad glare which hits the cards and makes it hard to read and follow along with your commentary. Otherwise, great stuff. Much appreciated.

im curious i heard somewhere or thought i heard somewhere that the big score was only going to be in collector booster. is that wrong can you get them in normal play booster too? is there anything in this set thats exclusive to collector boosters?
You can pull Big Score cards from Play boosters. However, non foil only. You can ONLY find the foil Big Score cards, "Opened Vault" treatment cards, Textured cards, and Extended-Art in Collector Boosters.
Hi Gavin, I need to ask. For spree cards, can you NOT pay additional cost and just cast the base mana value? For storm or other mechanics. Many thanks!
You may not. You have to cast it with at least one mode chosen. From the Release Notes:
You must choose at least one of the listed modes and pay its associated additional cost in order to cast a spell with spree.
Vehicles make sense because when they aren’t crewed they aren’t creatures. Mounts having these effects because you tap creatures doesn’t make sense as a mount. They are just generic effects that get activated when you tap some creatures

box prices to high with playboosters, totally NOT enjoyable
Happened with Manors was that they started at 170 then dropped to 110 to 130
It should cost 3,99€ per pack. Not more, not less.
WotC is forcing the limited play community to pay more by disguising set boosters. I was all about limited one a week for $12 now it $25 for a bunch of bulk rares.

i rly miss set boosters
I was hoping that these play boosters were gonna be tweaked and made better than the Karlov manor ones but they seem just as underwhelming. Seeing so many packs with just one rare is beyond disappointing.
I am very dissapointed that Jace is the good two mana walker and that Tibalt didn't get to have a new card to redeem his first iteration.

I always like to watch new openings to get a glimpse of the new set but man Gavin's left thumb got me all messed up. I keep looking at it even though it makes my stomach turn lol.

Please get rid of ad cards. We already bought your product. You don’t need to show us an ad. Nothing feels worse than getting a ad card instead of a token.
It's so unfortunate what has happened to mtg. It has lost its identity and not for the better. It's a real shame that wotgreed won't listen to criticism. The customers are treated like bank accounts and that's a nice way of putting it. Sigh, how tf did we get so lost......

Hi Gavin I wanted to ask you about two things: why are there no sheriffs in the set, and why are there no Native Americans? When I think Old West, these 2 things are two of the first things I think of, but both seem pretty absent from MtG’s Old West setting. Thanks.
There are no natives on the plane but Annie West, Yuma etc. seem to be Native American inspired characters.

Bring back draft boosters!! Make limited affordable again!Stop making us pay more for bulk rares we don't need. Draft used to be $12 now it's $25. It is forcing limited players to spend more unnecessarily. I want my son to play limited but it's just too pricey now.
I love magic art. But hear me out. We need more tokens if you are going to keep making so many unique tokens. Maybe stop with art cards? They have no functional use in the game and have been either thrown out or collecting dust since they came out.
Also ad cards should be the back side of tokens. I understand you need ads, but they get thrown out immediately if not half token.

I think it would have been a better set if it focused more on the plane natives, who are being oppressed by the new outlaws from other planes.
So thorough and slow paced opening, good vibes with explanations and thoughts about the cards. Very enjoyable, best opening yet. Thx man :D

14:54 We might call them “sting abilities” or “final-sting abilities,” after Final-Sting Faerie. Or just “fatal blow abilities,” after Fatal Blow. Or, my favorite, “finisher abilities,” after Vraska’s Finisher. Either option feels less, uh, 😬😬😬 than “euthanist abilities.”
Or, of course, “You Are Already Dead” abilities. :p

I think "finisher" is the best unironic name, but I'll always be thinking of You Are Already Dead when I see them lol.

Hey Gavin, I love your content and respect your impact on mtg design a huge deal ! Magic set design is in a great spot and has been for the past couple years. I do feel the urge to bring to your attention the issue with color balance on Play Boosters. I usually run multiple paper drafts a week at our LGS and we started feeling the impact of the booster change on MKM. It seems with the extra sheets on OTJ, the Play Booster structure has impacted the drafting experience even more. Yesterday during our third pre-release draft I got passed a pack with 7 white cards (I have a picture if you want). Please address this issue/subject if possible. As a 100% limited player, I´d really appreciate it.

As long as there's no pack tricks, all is yeehaw I reckon. I like my rarer cards in the back and the randomness spoils the anticipation of hitting the exciting cards in my opinion

I’m a recent subscriber, enjoyed this video, started watching to get a sneak peek and hints for my first ever prerelease event. I’ve been playing since 2003, but mostly just kitchen table play. Thanks for the secret word, rodeos are a lot of fun.
Love the episode! the set is looking fun and I really like the bonus sheet this time around it's a lot of fun. Was there any thought of putting ravenous chupacabra on the sheet? it seems like a great fit for both the flavor of the world and the theme of the sheet
