I paid $80 on Amazon for a Cecilio rosewood student violin set (case, rosin, two bows, 4/4 violin with a chin rest, and shoulder rest) and my teacher was surprised at the quality. The strings are pretty good (they aren't that plastic kind that some beginner violins have) and it sounds well enough. I've had it for three years and it's doing strong so far. I would recommend it for people who can't afford anything over $100 (I had to pay for the violin myself). But I am saving up for a better violin around $400 to get a better sound and all that good stuff.

I have a $130 Cecilio violin. Made in China. Had it for a year now. Still playing and learning on it. It's not a strad of course, but for the price it has a nice tone. I think any violin can sound good when it's in the right hands. Next year I'll be investing in an antique violin.
I have the same. It works fine for me in my beginner status. Once I get to intermediate status, I'll probably look for something better, but that’s a bit down the line.
I have always wanted to learn how to play the violin the violin has always been my favorite instrument in the world this video will probably help me one day when i get my own violin one day.
Hi Taylor - I paid 39.95 (US) for a new violin made in China from Amazon over a year and a half ago. It came with the bow, the case, a small cake of rosin, an extra set of steel strings, and a digital electronic chromatic tuner. Admittedly it took nearly 60 minutes to get it in tune, but once I got it in tune it plays exceptional well for a $39 violin (with extras). Every few weeks it may need a tuning adjustment (but then what violin doesn’t?). The violin has a maple back and maple sides, and a solid spruce top. The pegs are aligned, and are nice and taut. The tailpiece appears to be made of plastic, however. It has all of its original parts, and I play it on average of twice a week for a couple of hours a day (when I’m not playing my other violin). When I’m not playing it, it serves as a decorative wall hanger - for which it was originally purchased. In the event that it someday gives up the ghost, it'll always serve as a decorative wall hanger. 😊 ♫ 🎻
My teacher went to Germany and learn how to build violin, he spend time to grind for one violin a year and sell them for $3500 each. The woods are all imported from Germany
Is there a difference between the normal colored violins and the ones with weird colors and designs? I had a music teacher tell me once that buying instruments like "a pink flute" or something was always a mistake so I'm curious whether or not the case is the same with violins.
Regarding the choice of violin, when it comes to electric I like the full size Cecilio. I did have an issue with the pre-amp blowing just before the first year ended (I don't know if it's a common problem), but apart from that it's actually a very nice instrument. It's solid wood, so doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart, the pegs stay in tune for months (I do make very fine adjustments on the tailpiece, but that's maybe once a week), and it's also virtually silent so it's perfect for practicing. One thing to keep in mind though is that the solid maple body is considerably heavier than an accoustic violin.
I have to much sentimental value and can't trade in. I traded in when I was growing up but I regret trading in my first 4/4 violin. It my was my first, "grown up violin". My oldest violin now is about 18 years old. I'm just now looking into buying a new one

+neekMarieM14 Sure, I can show you guys some of my favorite practice tips for different technique! I'm a huge fan of slow practice and gradually speeding it up. I'll show you what works for me and you can see if you like it!
Dear Taylor, thank you for such a video. I didn't need your recommendation since my 10 years son entered academy last year and his teacher is great, the reason why he likes violin lessons so much and performs very well while his dad is sharing with him, between many other things, very niece pieces of music out of japan animes and video games history and of course Ms Davis' videos. By the way, my 5 years old daughter finds you incredibly beautiful and, now, in addition to her will to learn violin wants to have her hair falling on the face on the left side like you. She made me laugh with this last wish. She really likes you a lot. You were right by mentioning that's it's hard to give a price. Nevertheless, between my son's teacher and what I found out googling, this 250-400$ range seems totally justified even here in Europe where prices in music shops can be quite different from your place. You can buy it cheaper but then again, exactly as you said, it's a hit or miss bet. You're not only talented. You care a lot when advising. Thank you again. I'm very sincerely wishing you all the best in your life. One last thing: we missed your 2016 tour. I hope you'll come back to Belgium.
Hello Taylor.I have a music degree, but violin is, in no way part of that. I inherited a 1911 Lyon and Healy violin from my Great Grandmother many years ago.I only wish to play it on special occasions. Soooooo, I would like to purchase a good violin that would work well in a live setting. I have a collection of different kinds of instrument that I can actually play. But it is time to learn bowed instruments. What are your thoughts on these three brands: Hofner 11E Scott Cao 1740 YSAYE Scott Cao 1743 Cannon
I borrowed first time violin from a neighbor. 1979?BEFORE UA-cam)..my mother saw my initiative and had her aunt bring her violin she had as a teen. and she gave it to me , not knowing ANYTHING about it( ALMOST sold it to a pawn dealer for 20$), since then I found passion for it. i took a violin BUILDING class and what a learn that was, i don't look at violins the same way now. and i have idea of what to look for in well made fiddles. this is age of internet now violin kits out there and a pile of fiddle tutorials on youtube and a boat load of OPINIONS. Violin is one of the greatest inventions of human kind. right after remote control and" Dominos pizza app" we didn't always have that either..Chinese made violins are not always firewood ..watch those crafters make those on youtube..they are diligent and competitive what ive seen. Use good strings, good bridge they can sound good not to be sneezed at. Taylor is right 250 500 is good base to starting figure.
I am 13 years old and I am saving up for my first violin. I want a pink one. I know this seems bad. But, I've always had a fascination with coloured violins. There is no music store in my town or I would by there. So I have to buy online so I was thinking of a Stentor Harlequin is that a good brand? I really like the violin I saw in the video. I can't do your price range as I would never be able to save up for that. My violin will cost $115.00. Is that good?
Kaito Sama A warning to you, coloured violins usually sound a lot worse than regular violins. There used to be a girl at my lessons with a pink violin, and it was painful to listen to. If you really want it, get it I guess, but I would recommend one that isn't coloured, especially for a beginner.
phoenixfeather I heard about that but, I have also heard the sound of this violin and it's really beautiful. So that's why I want it. But, thank you for all your advice!
That's good! But professionals can usually make any violin sound pretty decent. The violin could have a nice sound, but you won't be able to make it sound like that right away. Don't be discouraged, just keep practicing and you'll eventually be able to make it sound nice.
Thank you. I would appreciate your advice. I searched for tips because I checked and I saw some very cheap violins. I mean how on earth can people sell a new 4/4 violin whole set for 50 USD? You point on several questions I was not aware of.
Taylor? I've got an Violin but I don't know if These Violin is playing good. In the middle there is a sign from 1704 but there is also a writing with Made in Germany... I'm realy interested in playing Violin, like to have a short answer
I have a 4/4 violin and it came with the violin and the bow and the Rozen and it was over $250-$300 and I had it for about 5 years and play it a lot and my bow isn't making noise but I have Rosen on it and still won't make noise? Is it the hairs on the bow or the strings on the violin?
My current beginner's violin was about $400, pretty good sound, warmer and deeper than many other beginner instruments. But just as important as the instrument itself are the bow and strings. A cheap, plastic bow and low-quality strings make even a great instrument sound bad. Buy a good bow! Take your instrument in to a string shop and test a few. Horsehair ones are best and can be inexpensively purchased. The difference in my sound between the fiberglass bow that came with my violin and the horsehair one I bought later for it is noticeable. Also, buy decent strings! You can't get a good sound out of cheap strings!
Can you do a video where you show all of the violins that you own and give kind of a background and how special they are to you? That would be awesome.
Lots of great info in this. Thanks for sharing. I really love your music, but I found that it distracted from your talking in this video--maybe a slightly more mellow song or no music?
I ordered one online bad idea so I’m just gonna get one at our local shop hopefully it’s not too much more than 200 that’s the limit that’s as high as I’m going.
I recently went to a local string shop to try their violins and they didn't come close to a violin that I got from fiddlerman, I would recommend them every single time. And the violin comes setup
my problem child violin the string shop i went to acully didn't have a full size in so i had to wait for them to ship one in and i couldn't test it before buying its an ok violin it in it gets out of toon extremely easily and it was an expensive violin i paid like 200 it works just the pegs need to be replaced
Het Taylor, I'm looking to learn the Viola with around $300-$350 budget and have been looking at the Cremona SVA-175. Is Cremona generally a good brand for beginners to buy?
+Taylor Davis - You mentioned that the intonation of a violin has a lot to do with the quality of the instrument. I also contend it has a lot to do with the violinist as well. I’m sure you, as a violin virtuosa, can make a $100 violin sound like one selling for five times that. In fact, I’m sure that if you were to play Pachelbel’s Canon in D major, for example, on a $100 violin and on your $500 violin, and not identify which violin you’re playing, the listener would have a hard time distinguishing one from the other.
What is your opinion on Gliga Violins as a first violin ? The intermediate ones are priced in the 300-500 $ which is the price bracket you recommended.
+peptoman2222 hmm not familiar with those but looked at some reviews and people seem to think they're a good buy. With a lot of these beginner violin brands it seems like they're usually pretty good but sometimes people get a bad one that isn't built right. If you can try one out in person that would be great, but if not then just make sure you do enough research to feel comfortable with it and make sure they have a good return policy just in case!
you should view the Le Beu castles ever been there ? I enjoy your music and if you come to Orkney I will go and see you and meet you ever thought about a nice holiday in a safe and quiet place beaches all round it's the most beautiful island in the world
+Kirito Kirigaya what were the reviews like? That seems like it could be a little sketchy :/ it's so hard to tell when you're buying online and can't see it first, that's why I would rely on what some of the reviews say!
+Kirito Kirigaya Even if it is 4 stars, make sure you read the worst of the reviews. With things like this, I find they are the most accurate, compared to the people who turned out loving the item.
Hi I am a flutist in a youth orchestra and I hoping on playing the violin in the future. I have a question to ask. How will this work especially since I am Southpaw aka left handed. What should I do about
First thing I bought was a Yamaha Yev lol. As an adult making my own money I'm allowed to splurge and I live in an apartment with thin walls, I can't make my neighbours listen to an acoustic every day, I'm not that cruel. I have an acoustic now too but I only play it once or twice a week at a rehearsal space I rent.
Doesn't matter what price you pay... If you treat it with the right love... it will stay in tune and play beautiful music... Just love your violin and take care of it properly...
I do think is better to go to the shop, my problem is, I have never held a violin, so I wouldn’t know how to try one. I will rely on the seller advice which in my case is a really nice person but if you are not sure because they will just try to sell you expensive stuff, I would say contact a violinist teacher and ask for their opinion, I’m sure they have experience with people showing up with a bad instrument or they spent too much.
my dad gave me my first main violin that is over 40 years old now. it had so many problems that I delt with for 3 years. but I'm getting it fixed and the guy is doing it for free. so this violin was free and the repairs were free. hope other can be as lucky as me.
My violin came direct from a country musician. Old Hopf someone expert restored maybe refinished sounds amazing. Under 350 total and I didn't have to get it repaired! No case or bow. I was told Hopf brand fiddles are junk.
My first full sized violin is the cheapest I found at store (I cannot order online or something and in music stores they only sell cheap violins (some are crappy like mine). I don't think I might change my violin yet because my family wont approve on a more (a little) quality violin. Some of my friends tell me thats its time (due to sympathy from all the failed recitals *my violin does this weird things even if I had to review all the basics and kinda mastered it but still* i had in school) to upgrade a bit.
I was thinking of buying one for myself, sadly there is no place they sell violins here so i have to order from the internet. do you have any recommendations for a violin brand?
+Kenny22111 www.amazon.com/Cecilio-CVN-300-Solidwood-DAddario-Prelude/dp/B00EOYKGH0/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_pdt_img_top?ie=UTF8 Probably not that helpful but I am completely new to violins and whatnot and This is the one I am ordering for myself, as a beginner as I've heard really good things about it and have watched and read many reviews and it seems to be a good starter violin.
thanks for the tip i dont quite know how to write this but i was thinking of something a bit more pricey so that it hopefully wont be lacking in sound if i get good and want more out of the insturment like she said in the video if that makes sense.
Honestly I'm not beginner. Be payed for money and I had to sell my instrument so I want to at least get something by a maker or at least something I won't really want to upgrade
Beware of Violin Shaped Objects (VSO). These are the really bad ones that Taylor talks about. A lot of cheap stuff out of china are VSO. There are good makers from China, but they tend to be the more expensive ones; the $100-$200 'beginner kits' that have everything including bags are not going to be good. One thing that it is good to check in a store is if you prefer the Viola. I do both, but the Viola is easier for me because the spacing on mine is perfect for my natural hand position, whereas on the violin I have consciously bring my fingers closer together. It's a little tricky if you already know how to read music due to the unique clef, though. Make sure you get the right size; Viola are far less standardized than Violins so 'full size' can mean 6+ different sizes that you need to select properly for your individual height, arm length, etc. I would also say that, if you can, avoid 'violin shaped' teardrop cases. Not only are they generally not as good quality, but weird shape can lead to trouble getting stuff in and also with storage (the odd shape HAS to go on top). But no matter what, be sure to avoid bags, which is to say thing that are literally just flexible duffel bags vaguely 'shaped like' a violin. You need to get something that will actually protect your instrument with padding, etc. or it will die quickly and horribly, especially if you ever have to take it on public transit. Violins are thing wood over a hollow interior, so they will cave in when impacted.
Buy it, get over the fear, it’s something new and fun! If it doesn’t work out then move on to another interest and sell it online. I’ve never played a violin but thinking to buy one.
Like the atmosphere, but the background music is a bit too loud. Listening to someone and understanding what they're saying requires a few breaks to fully comprehend what the person is saying, i.e. natural moments when nothing is being said. If you turn the volume of that music down a bit your points will stay in mind more easily.
How can you try out a violin if you are buying it for the first time and never played the intrument? You wouldn't know what to look/hear for and how to play it properly. :)
+Mogenar Well that's why I recommend going into a shop :) The shops I've gone to in the past all have someone on hand who can help you with the decision, offer advice, even play the instruments for you so you can hear the difference and decide what sound you like. You can also do some of your own research before hand to know what to look for, specifically with the set up on the pegs, bridge etc., and you wouldn't have to be a pro to notice something out of place there if you did some research before hand!
Thanks, and do you think starting to play the violin at older age (I'm 25) is more difficult than when you learned it at younger age? I do have some musical experience with guitar and banjo though, but I doubt that will help. :)
+Mogenar The speed everyone learns at is different, but don't let your age deter you! Some teachers say adult students learn faster, because they have more patience and put in the practice time needed. I got my first violin at 35, and I never played any instruments before! If you have your heart set on learning, go for it! :)
hi, Taylor Davis would be great if you put captions on your videos to other countries like Brazil where you have a large audience who loves you too would help a lot thank you

I have finished grade 8 and planing to do diploma do you think $2000 is enough?
Thanks
just don't buy it from wish, believe me.... I know 😩
De verdad me interesan estos vídeos tuyos. Pero no entiendo nada jaja 😅😅. Necesito aprender inglés.
Im guessing the bow. you could take it to a Music store and ask to try bow if it works you know its the bow. Or try your bow on another violin.
It is the bow. You should go to a violin shop and ask the Luthier to change the bow hair on your bow.
Yes Sophia's World but if the sound post is down it could cause some things like that to happen..
billy bobjones You should get a new bow and also its rosin
+Sergio Paez Sure!
+Taylor Davis - Behind the Strings yay
+Taylor Davis - Behind the Strings also if you are going to mention my last name, it's like pie-ez
@@TaylorDavisStudio Hey is the Jean Paul Violin a good one?
Lots of great info in this. Thanks for sharing.
I really love your music, but I found that it distracted from your talking in this video--maybe a slightly more mellow song or no music?
I ordered one online bad idea so I’m just gonna get one at our local shop hopefully it’s not too much more than 200 that’s the limit that’s as high as I’m going.
thank you so much Taylor this really helps me out because I'm a beginner thank you
hi Tyalor , I want to ask you about violin Kit 4/4 that cost 39$ , what you think about it ?
Nargees Hamed No No No In order to have a quality violin you are going to have to pay a little more than $39
Simeon Spann is about 70$ fine for a beginner?
Isaac Dozalal
Apparently the Stentor Student 2 is a good violin, according to a violinist here on youtube. It’s about $250.
I recently went to a local string shop to try their violins and they didn't come close to a violin that I got from fiddlerman, I would recommend them every single time. And the violin comes setup
Wooo! I'm early today! Anyways, Hey Taylor when will you announce the winner of the app contest? Or did I already miss it....
The video isn't loading. That sucks... But it let's me comment... Oh well. I blame my school's wifi.
+Scynthia The Violinist The app contest is still running until Friday, so I'll be letting the winner know once it closes!
Taylor Davis - Behind the Strings Oh alright. Thanks for letting me know. Keep up the good work! :)
I’ve been looking at the Fiddlemaster apprentice violin
my problem child violin the string shop i went to acully didn't have a full size in so i had to wait for them to ship one in and i couldn't test it before buying its an ok violin it in it gets out of toon extremely easily and it was an expensive violin i paid like 200 it works just the pegs need to be replaced
Which one is better? The Gliga Gems 1 elite, Fiddlerman Artist, and Carlo Lamberti Sonata?
Oof still no awnser
Thanks for your fast reply. Continue your greats videos !
you should view the Le Beu castles ever been there ? I enjoy your music and if you come to Orkney I will go and see you and meet you ever thought about a nice holiday in a safe and quiet place beaches all round it's the most beautiful island in the world
Please forgive my question...what brand is your violin case?
my first ever violin was 1400 total plus the bow
i saw one on Amazon that was $80 and it came with everything sould i get that one or look for higher price.
+Kirito Kirigaya what were the reviews like? That seems like it could be a little sketchy :/ it's so hard to tell when you're buying online and can't see it first, that's why I would rely on what some of the reviews say!
+Taylor Davis - Behind the Strings it had like 4 stars
+Kirito Kirigaya Even if it is 4 stars, make sure you read the worst of the reviews. With things like this, I find they are the most accurate, compared to the people who turned out loving the item.
Please don't. Honestly not worth it. I'll go into details if you want.
Final Fantasy battle music in the background.
I was looking for the question, got the answer instead..thanks
Thanks Taylor!
Thanks this is very helping
Hi Taylor, what's your thoughts on Yamaha V5?
Isnt anything Yamaha pretty good
Final Turn anything Yamaha is already a good sign and the v5 has a great tone being very good for early and intermediate pieces
Do you use a Musafia case for your violin? I am thinking of buying one for my fiddle. Thanks Taylor, great video gal.
Thank you Taylor, it's beautiful :)
my son is a lefty does it make a difference?
Doesn't matter what price you pay... If you treat it with the right love... it will stay in tune and play beautiful music... Just love your violin and take care of it properly...
It literally will not stay in tune if it's made poorly
I do think is better to go to the shop, my problem is, I have never held a violin, so I wouldn’t know how to try one. I will rely on the seller advice which in my case is a really nice person but if you are not sure because they will just try to sell you expensive stuff, I would say contact a violinist teacher and ask for their opinion, I’m sure they have experience with people showing up with a bad instrument or they spent too much.
I want to get a left handed violin. because I'm a lefty should I have to pay more? and where should I look to buy a violin?
Which is the best brand which you would suggest for a beginner who is 16 yrs old....??
my dad gave me my first main violin that is over 40 years old now. it had so many problems that I delt with for 3 years. but I'm getting it fixed and the guy is doing it for free. so this violin was free and the repairs were free. hope other can be as lucky as me.
Uhhh Taylor.... Is mozart violin a good brand? I'm aiming for it since it's what my budget can get without my parent's help .-.
I love Sharr Music out of Ann harbor,Michigan. Let me have my daughter home trial her Volia.
Note I am thinking of picking up a new instrument for myself thanks for the information about violin.
Instructions unclear bought a 100,000 violin

Should I buy a left handed violin? I’m left handed and I’ve heard using a right handed violin is better for both hands
Perfect!! And you're so beautiful also. I'm 43, do you think it's too late for me to learn to play?
I'm turning 40 in 2 months. It's never too late.
Thank you for sharing 🌹 what do you think of buying a 🎻 online?
What advice do you have for for a. 5 year old turning 6 for beginners
Great amizzeng violin and a million dreams song
I love the bb2 droid in the lower left of he video
Please Taylor can please tell me the model number of your violin........!!!!!
I was thinking of buying one for myself, sadly there is no place they sell violins here so i have to order from the internet. do you have any recommendations for a violin brand?
+Kenny22111 www.amazon.com/Cecilio-CVN-300-Solidwood-DAddario-Prelude/dp/B00EOYKGH0/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_pdt_img_top?ie=UTF8
Probably not that helpful but I am completely new to violins and whatnot and This is the one I am ordering for myself, as a beginner as I've heard really good things about it and have watched and read many reviews and it seems to be a good starter violin.
thanks for the tip i dont quite know how to write this but i was thinking of something a bit more pricey so that it hopefully wont be lacking in sound if i get good and want more out of the insturment like she said in the video if that makes sense.
Kenny22111 Yes Knilling Is and excellent quality brand
I really want to buy one but I'm afraid that it would be hard for me as I never played an instrument before:(
Buy it, get over the fear, it’s something new and fun! If it doesn’t work out then move on to another interest and sell it online. I’ve never played a violin but thinking to buy one.
No explanation on size or anything else?
Which one brand is best for violin
Hi Taylor Davis
I'm broke and I can only afford 100 dollar violin, any advice?
Thank you so much
hi, Taylor Davis would be great if you put captions on your videos to other countries like Brazil where you have a large audience who loves you too would help a lot thank you
Yeah I got a pretty bad one I can’t even shift on it
How bout a used one from my local shop for 180
What do you think about used violins for a beginner, (if I don't know if I play long ) I saw a used violone on a flee marked app for about 94 $ ( the cheapest one), one 106$ - what do you think .
Does Nike make violins ?
can anyone recommend a specific violin/fiddle for a first timer who is very interested and very musically inclined but yet lacks experience and skill? I want to learn on something decent, not some cheap made in china bullshit knockoff nonsense. looking for something expensive enough to sound and feel great, but less than $1k
i'm lefthanded... can i play violin?
We lefties can do anything!! 🤜🏽🤚🏽👈🏽
I got a idea . Dave s lot of money to just buy the Taylor Davis C.D 20 BUCKS . and no lessons .
