Kubota ZD326 - Mower Deck Gearbox oil change

- Changing gearbox oil in a Kubota ZD326 used to be a total pain due to the location of the drain plug being located directly over the belt and no easy way to capture the gear oil without oil running everywhere. Now it’s simple with popping off the sealed top and using a fluid extractor. The mess is virtually eliminated.

Have the same mower and dread changing as it fouls the belt and deck no matter what I tried. This is ingenious. Thanks.
I know exactly what you mean...horrible from a maintenance perspective. But when I rebuilt the gearbox it became clear there was a better alternative. Glad you like it and hoping you will subscribe to our channel. Take care John and thanks again for the feedback.
Good evening family. Thank you very much for the valuable information and for your time 🙏 👍🏼 👍🏼
That's better than getting gear oil on the belt, and all over the deck -
Wish my Kubota zd18 had that hinged floor plate above my gear box
That’s a bummer to hear yours is without a hinged door.
I’ve had my ZD28 for nineteen years and never thrown a belt, guess I better consider myself lucky
Once again, thank you for the video. It’s going in the short list of tractor maintenance.
Great video Storm. Have same machine and deck, manual calls for gear box oil change @ 150 hr. Sorry to say I didn't know the gear box was so easy to get at. Threw a belt today so will change oil and then replace belt.
Awesome! The key to the belt change is releasing the idler spring. Fun stuff and if you have any questions please get back with me. Good luck and keep us posted.
Larry - recently released 2 other zd326 videos. One is related to mower deck maintenance including releasing the idler spring and the other is relative to all the zerk fittings on our machine. Also did a couple of videos where I’m experimenting with mower blade sharpening. Let us know what you think. Take care.
@@Stromzilla Thanks. You are a great help.
Thank you for the kind comments and feedback. Would so appreciate it if you would subscribe to our channel and we will keep rolling with the vids. Take care.
Recently blew the gearbox on by zd331. While looking at the parts computer at the dealer I noticed that a dipstick retrofit kit is available for the gearbox. Gearbox is $1550.
I’m sorry to hear that. My approach with the gearbox on our zd326 is to change out the gear oil on a 2 year cycle. My concern has always been with the box having a low oil capacity and condensation collecting internally. This approach has served me well. Gear oil is cheap compared to a gearbox replacement.
What a crazy and hard way to do it. That bolt on the top is the fill hole. All you had to do was remove it with a 15mm or 17mm wrench to extract the gear oil and re-fill it.
To each his own. Do what is best for you
Another great video, been looking for a way to add a sight glass or similar way to show full or empty. Sometimes hard to tell when the bottom seals fail.
When seals fail you will see gear oil on the floor. What we do is loosen the top fill plug to see if oil runs out. If it doesn’t then we add. We also change gear oil frequently because the volume of gear oil is low which means that box and oil will get hot if the blades get loaded down. Replacing gearbox will run over $1,000. Changing gear oil with high quality Amsoil Severe Gear 75w110 is approximately $7. Therefore, changing frequently for us is a no-brainer.
@@Stromzilla hey where'd you buy that oil for $7 bucks ? im having trouble finding it that cheap. thanks for the video
@@groundup421 Lol…if you find gear oil that cheap, stay away from it. We use Amsoil 75w90 or better yet, try the Amsoil 80w90…much better price and perfect for summer applications
@@Stromzilla if you look at your comment from a year ago above you stated you paid $7 for amsoil,
@@groundup421 Was likely referring to how much it cost relative to the amount of oil necessary to fill the gear box.
I have the same mower and I was doing my normal cutting and all of a sudden, a loud sound kinda like a clicking was coming from that same area. What do you think happened.
I went for another couple seconds and it still was cutting but the sound was just horrendous.
Hard to say from where I’m sitting. However, if you remove the pulley covers as shown on ours, you’ll have a much better view on what’s going on. Also as I’ve shown in my other video, you can lift the cover to view the center pulley to see if it’s wobbling. And have someone checkout the belt when it’s engaged.
Let me know the age of your machine and total runtime hours.
@@Stromzilla thank you, I’ll reply again tomorrow to see if it worked or if I can see anything wrong.
Keep me posted. Depending on how old your mower is, it might have that lousy center pulley that wears out prematurely like mine did after 230hrs. And then again it could be an idler pulley with the belt. Good luck.
i thought these were made to fill in the top corner bolt/plug that you never removed. the small plug.
There’s a fill plug in the middle and a drain plug.
Do not let this gearbox go dry or it’s going to cost you thousands of dollars, I can tell you from experience.
Which is exactly why we change it out more than the book calls for. You’re absolutely spot on with your assessment. And if the seals show any signs of leaks or going bad, change’em. Thank you for your feedback. We always appreciate comments.
@@Stromzilla I checked the seals every time I sharpened the blades and saw no leaks, I didn’t check the oil because it is so hard to get to on the ZD 28
@@cmdrrgh Hey, I cut a little piece out of the floor where the peddle for the e-brake is on my ZD28, now I take the 4 bolts out on the front and the floor comes off real easy. Gives you great access to the deck. BTW, if you run the gear box dry your looking at almost $1400 to replace.
@@dbyers35750 The gearbox cost $1500 from my local Kabota dealer and I found it online for $1100 delivered to my house. You can rebuild it for about $500.
@@dbyers35750 I did the same with my deck, two bolts in the front and one in the center on the rear of the deck
