Like you, I insulated all of my van //except// the back doors, and I definitely regret missing that part. Even though I have a white van, the metal conducts a lot of heat in the summer and cold in the winter. Temperature difference between the front and rear is very noticeable. If you have a chance to go back and insulate your rear doors, I highly recommend it. They may seem too small to worry with, but they are very good conductors. Anyway, looking forward to watching the rest of your build.
So I sanded, taped, and sprayed one coat of sound insluation in my Ram Promaster 159 Ext. in one day (about 6 hours). Waited 1 day then 1 more coat, about which was 2 hours including cleanup. Waited 3 days to be sure it was dry then one coat of Lizard Skin insulation which was about 2.5 hours as well. Takes 5 gallons of each to do it right. I watched this prior to doing mine and it certainly helped. Oh, FYI if you clean that spray gun after each use it works better the next time. Spray about a gallon, rinse it off (outside of the sprayer only) then continue. Keeps it new. Thanks Scott.
I just recently ordered, and plan to start the project in the next couple days. Did you also not cover the slider, and back doors? I only ordered 4 gallons of sound deadener, and 4 gallons of ceramic insulation. Why did you also leave off the heat protection?
@@joshseim4211 How did your build come out? I'm beginning mine. Did you cover the whole van or just segments? Was 4 gallons of each enough? What size/model of vehicle did you use?
I think your video on lizard skin is the best, you communicate WELL , thanks
Ss
Great job on the video. You put a lot of work into it.
You made an action video out of probably the most boring topic ever lol. Great job!
Glad you liked it!
nice and concise but thorough coverage of lizard skin application. i start mine soon. thanks for the vid, i feel a bit more confident now.
The editing is phenomenal man!! Well done 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks Billy getting better
An actual defrost test and comparison would be so useful. This is a lot of work but if it actually keeps out condensation it is. Almost invaluable in a van that is going to be all season.
I'm working my way through your video series. It has been awhile since you made this and I'm sure you're done with your build. Now that you have taken your van on the road, what do you think of the Lizard Skin application? Was it worth all the work? Did it eliminate the frost condensation?
Aahh, a long awaited video tutorial, thank you.
Thanks for checking out the video Colleen!
This is Definitely your best video, it was great to watch and very informative thanks!
Thanks! Trying to get better at this video gig
Nice job. That sound deadening IS impressive.
Yeah I am super impressed with it its going to be much better than my last van.
I’m prepping. About to spray tomorrow. Trying to decide if it’s worth it to spray in the doors.
Any updates?
My experience: you don't need to scuff the paint since it adheres fine either way. At least you don't need to go further than a very quick rub with like 360 grit (red pad). A sander is overkill and won't get into the contours (tons of them) anyways. The recommendation of 2 turns out on the nozzle is wrong...go for at least 3 turns. Also the compressor size doesn't really matter...it's the pump size that matters. You need > 5cfm to spray continuously and even 20 gallons is going to empty in a few minutes if your pump can't keep up. Largest Transit (long + high) took 6 gallons and about 4 hours for each component (sound + ceramic)
Yea def overkill
Great video though it really shows the amount of time and labor that goes into these kind of projects whether it’s lizard skin or spray for most people never plan enough time for these things and don’t realize so thanks
excellent video. to the point , no fluff. i wish more videos on you tube were this concise. thank you.......i Defiantly hit the SUB BUTTON!
Glad it helped!
For anyone thinking about doing this, an abrasive nylon cup in a grinder would have had that entire van scuffed in just a few hours, vs days with an orbital sander.
Hey bud. I'm thinking about doing this in my suv. I'm sooo tired of carpet!
Amazing video! Thank you for sharing Brother 👍🏻
My pleasure
So I know you did this video a while ago but was just about to order some based on your 4gal. recommendation in the video... I called Lizard skin to get the discount on the volume for sprinters and they said I would need 8gal. saying that you miss spoke and that you had used (4) 2gal. buckets. I just want to confirm before spend a crap ton of money on this stuff. Thanks much 😁
I just had a conversation with Lizard Skin about material quantity. Recommendation was for 8 gal. (4 * 2-gal buckets) of each material for a MB 170-Extended.
Badass thank you for the great information 👊🏽💯
Great video Scott, stay safe!
Faz! Thank you
really enjoying your channel...thanks man!
I thought about this too, but decided to go with raptor bed liner mixed with ceramic dust on the outside of the van and I sprayed plastidip on the inside.
Did that work well for you?
Great work Scott! On both the van and the video! I'm liking the monologue video openers and the different ways you cover the lens for scene cuts (especially the cam tip-over... lol).. I see this channel going big with the van crowd and the general DIY'r. Do you plan to do a standard 10-15 second intro/outro clip complete with your own "jingle" for the channel? Something you can add to each video, you know, build on some more brand recognition so people know the second it comes on that its one of yours? Your thumbnails with the white letters are clean and consistent, but not unique to your channel. Have any thoughts on possibly a corner banner so people can easily know a video is yours just by glancing at the thumbnail? I'm sure these things will be easier to build out once you get more filming done? Love the work you've done and quality has been going up with each video! Can't wait to watch some more of the build!
haha yeah Im blaming the camera tip over on Dad he was supposed to be watching the camera....the compressor vibrated over and knocked it down. Yeah I plan to put something together just running out of hours in the day ha.
Love yr edits
.
i should do this to denial moisture buildup... but i dont like sanding XD.
already purchased sound deadener anyway. just gonna tape as much area as possible.
Yeah so far Im happy with it but I havent really tested it in the real world yet.
awesome video
thanks Eddie!
3 years later, can you give a review on how well the spray worked?
Thank you so much!! Did you insulate afterward? If so, what did you choose, please?
Gun spray pressure and cleaning the gun between coats. Crucial info
O yeah
How well has the lizardskin worked. Considering doing this to my semi truck sleeper, so I can air condition it easier
Scott, your conversation videos are the best on UA-cam. This is a newb question but why is sound proofing necessary if you are covering the metal with insulation, flooring, wall and ceiling covering? It’s not like you will be touching the metal parts of the van. Is it the wind or other outdoor elements hitting the exterior?
Thanks for saying that they are a ton of work so I appreciate that. When it comes to soundproofing you would be suprised at just how much road noise comes into these vehicles even once they are built out. So I am just doing whatever I can to try andd reduce it. Not such if they lizard skin is the answer yet since I havent tested it but we will see.
I learned a lot. Can a jigsaw cut through Lizard Skin if decide to put windows where you previously sprayed? Thanks.
In one shot, it looks like you did the lizard skin and they did the kill mat. Lizard Skin not enough? What did you do in your first van? I am assuming you'd want to do lizard then kill mat and not the opposite?
nice!!
Thanks Chris
Starting the 170 passenger build and this seems like the best first step for many reasons. Any close up shots of the final product ? Thx!
I took a ton of photos of it and I am super happy with how it all turned out.
Hey thanks for the great videos! Wondering if now that this is 2 years old... would you say this was worth it? I spend a lot of time in my van in cold climate heating it with an espar heater, but also travel to hot climates as well. I have definitely had the dripping condensation from the front headliner light... so if this helps with noise and that I would do it... thoughts after 2 years Scott?
Thank you for the great information! We are ready to order Lizard Skin and want to know if there is any reason to use the black vs. the white Lizard skin???? Thank you!
LOVE this video!!! We got lucky and already have what we believe is lizard skin on our floor, but we are highly considering doing the walls and ceilings. We have a 148" ford transit high roof extended... trying to figure out how many containers of each product we will need for just the walls and ceilings. Any advice you have would be awesome! We will definitely be purchasing from your link!
Be careful, Lizard Skin looks very close to truck bed liner. Truck bed liner releases toxic gasses when it heats up. Its not meant for indoor living spaces but sometimes people unknowingly still use it for that application.
In Germany / Europe everyone uses Armaflex closed cell self glueing foam for insulation and dampening. Its interesting how this material is not used in north america at all.
Yeah Ive seen that Im not sure if its just hard to get or what the deal is.
What is the ceramic coating for over the Lizard skin? Also wouldn’t a foam insulation spray deaden sound as well? I’m just curious. Thanks
So is it WORTH doing the lizard skin for the sound deadening, or just do what others have done and apply the peel and stick sound deadener like rattletrap?
love the channel. did you say you used it in your last van build ? any problem ? I see you still added more sound deadening? why ?is there any smell? great editing too
I did not use it in the last van and yes the Kilmat isnt very expensive so I added it as well and the combination of the two is impressive.
I had the same question. But do you think the lizard skin is adequate on its own?
Why not string yr electricals after the lizard spray?
.
spray foam? thoughts?
Im not a huge fan or spray foam for a few reasons but it works for a lot of people.
Scott Adamson reasons? 🤔
Spray foam is flammable for 1. If u ever need body work, it has to be re-sprayed or a hindrance to repair. But think about getting into an accident with a flammable.material plus if u ever change your mind, difficult and tedious to remove
What did you decide about its effect on condensation?
Lizard skin on the inside and white Line X on the outside?
Hi!! Does this work to keep heat out of the van or just sound? I’m confused 🙃 thanks for your help! It’s too hot in Texas!!
there are types of lizard skin being applied..the first is the sound deadener and the second is a thermo barrier: two coats of each for total of 4 coats. the sound cuts the sound. the thermo barrier is a ceramic coating that has no 'r' value per se but does an incredible job of knocking the conduction of heat from the outside to the inside by about 30 degrees...then you do your insulative/'r' type insulating ie 3m thinsulate etc etc... i have watched a ton of vids on the process and am coating my van interior next month with it...5gal of each.
Sound deadening (low frequency) is all about viscosity and mass placement.
Lizard skin is way thinner, much more work and price than regular anti vibration panels.
its not just about the mass. the metal panels body ring like a bell so deadening them would decrease noise conduction
The mass is what deadens the ringing...
You are correct.
Hi Scott, is it absolutely necessary to sand before applying? What is the important difference(s) and advantage(s) to sanding prior to applying the lizard skin?
yes it really is or the product probably wont stick. Its a small step considering the total amount of work.
Are there issues with this product and closed cell foam? I need to find something for the face aluminum framing and aluminum floor. Something that will be a great thermal break but I'm worried about overspray on closed cell foam in the cavities.
Jim from the office meets Casey neistat.. Welcome to the vibe
haha thanks!
Why not install it from the outside of the van? It'd definitely be much easier...would it be as effective?
Where are you located? I am in Florida. If you’re in Florida can I hire you? If so, how much would you charge to do a Dodge ram pro master cargo van 159 wheelbase high top
Thanks for your great review! Could this product be sprayed underneath the vehicle? We are doing a bus conversion and have already layed the flooring inside. What do you think? Thanks!
Hey Im not sure about exterior application I would contact the manufacturer.
The LizardSkin.com web site, in the FAQ’s says you can spray on the exterior or the interior, might be easier to spray the whole outside of the van. It comes in white as well or you can paint it any colour you like afterwards. Although the cost...
I might consider using lizard skin on the inside and white line x on the outside. Expensive for sure. Line x is heavy. I am worried about line x on the inside due to toxic fumes for a live-in van build.
Thanks for the tutorial Scott, Im looking to use the Lizard skin on my 177 van, Do you think 6 gallons of each product would cover the interior?
Hey Zach yeah it would be close for sure.
I go on the Lizard Skin website and to spray 226 sq. ft of the sound deadener only- the roof, driver side wall and passenger wall minus the sliding door, they recommend 12 gallons. I see people using half that. Does the product work, not using the amount the manufacturer recommends?
@@roboxenham905 Hi Rob, that was my thoughts originally but I couldn't justify the cost of 12 gallons of each product. After speaking to a dealer over here in the UK I went for 6 US gallons of each, the Sound Control covered the bulkhead, both walls, roof, rear doors and floor at 2 coats at the recommended thickness. The Ceramic Insulation covered the bulkhead, both walls, and roof with 2 coats and the floor with 1.
Scott, have you been registered to the database yet?
So if I use lizard skin do I still need to lay a subflooring? I am trying to figure out how to keep as much height as possible.
did you use a top coat? why or why not?
This is expensive stuff I think this is probably best to do for roof and floor and use regular sound deadener for the sides. A bit to much work for the results
Great point, I havent used it on the road and I will be giving feedback once I know how it performs.
Seems like this prevents the need for kilmat sound deadener and creates a thermal break. Is that correct? Also, is there a difference between the sound control, heat protection and ceramic insulation versions?
Your looking at the hardest and one of the worst methods. You just added an immense amount of weight for little benefit, meaning insulating and sound deadening properties. Plus Spray on coatings trap moisture which causes rust. You may of clogged your drain holes as well. Do you see any OEM's using this stuff ? No. Why Because it is ineffective for the weight and cost and very labor intensive.. There are better easier methods to insulate and sound deaden a van.
The best is by using Kilmat and Areogel blankets.
Say what? There's another sound deadener option other than the stick on rattletrap? had no idea...
Yuppers!
Great video. I just got a 2019 sprinter 170 extended body I decided to go with Lizard skin. what was your square footage on your van? When I ran the numbers on their site it came up with 22 gallons of the ceramic 28 of the sound. Way more than your build.
Yeah you dont need that much unless you plan on doing the outside....ha
@@scottadamson6116 I figured where I went wrong the amount was 11 gl on the calculated I flipped to buckets at 2gl a bucket. Got it on Amazon so return of extra is not to painful.
I got a question I have 2 10s in my jeep renegade wheel area with bandpass box. I have added deadner to roof and under box trunk area . When I turn speakers up sounds like I'm under. Car wash vibrates and sounds like I'm in a barrel maybe flexing not sure please help. Can some give me steps to make the rear area sound clean and not move all the panels and no flex????
Awesome video.... may I ask.... is it possible to use a paint brush etc. to put this on? Can’t see buying a spray gun for a one time use!
I painted my 12' boat with rustoleum using a $20 amazon gun and it did REALLY well actually
Yeah you need a spray gun they sell a kit for it. You might be able to find someone else that did a 1 time use and buy it off them. I might sell mine in the future.
Yeah I got a $60 gun for Spray Adhesive and it works well.... but a paint spray fun wont work with this stuff its too thick.
It's possible to brush it, but the spray can they deliver is much more usefull
Is the sandpaper you used a special kind for metal?
Nope just regular.
Did you use primer on the van before spraying the Lizard skin on and if so what primer did you use and why did you choose it? I was going to use Por15 but read some bad reviews and that it isn't the best if you plan on topcoating, which I plan on using Lizard Skin. TIA
No primer needed 😁
Has anyone used rattle can UNDERCOATING on the inside of van
Any response will be appreciated.
Are you going to to use killmat on top of lizardskin?
I did yup!
@@scottadamson6116 Do you think it's worth the $$$ for the lizard skin sound deadening vs killmatt? Trying to cut down some costs. Hi from Winnipeg! Thanks!
I only got one gallon of the sound control would it cover a 2 door jeep or should I get another gallon to be on the safe side
Im not sure it should be close .
Great video btw keep it up !! 👍🏻
Great editing but I feel like you missed a whole step not showing us the van you’re working on
