As i am a new atto3 owner I can inject some facts into the conversation. Picked up my 60kw battery car up in Sydney and drove to Coopers shoot near Ballina on the north coast NSW. Travelled at the the legal speed limit all the way. Did 390 km from 60kw of battery. Cost me nothing from free nrma charging all the way (Nabiac, Port Macquarie, Grafton). Took me 2.5 hrs longer in the trip than I normally took in my ice vehicles. I have made this trip dozens of time. Since then (nearly 4 weeks) I have averaged 440km per 60 kw from short 10 to 30km trips. All charged free from my solar panels. Cost of vehicle on the road from my pocket was $45,350 not $50,000. Lots of speculation and uninformed opinion in this video. Stick to the facts and enjoy dingo piss creek with the rest of the .05% of the population who travel there and enjoy paying the $3-$4 per litre for fuel while you are there.

Thanks for sharing Paul. How’s the car going in Ballina? I’m in Lismore and mine comes in January🤞🏼. I’m really excited to see those driving figures you’re talking about, for me more than acceptable for the price. When you look into it closely you can spend up to 70,000 to get the same features and safety technology & battery it’s a BYD Atto3👍🏼👍🏼 yes you need to wait a bit longer when charging, but that’s how it is. Hopefully in reality you doing 200 k’s a day I can get home and I plug it into my wall portable socket and it’ll be charged in the morning. When I go on holiday as you did you just arrange your stopping points and have a nice break with the family.
How’s the charging going in real life. Does that charging station in Ballina work well with the BYD? How long does it take to charge?
Any complaints driving on our Northern Rivers roads? How is the acceleration, is it ‘good’ going around corners, does the cruise control technology & distance, speed, stop go settings & features and their lane assist technology work well on our rods, I presume BRUXNER hwy from Ballina to Lismore should be terrific to drive???!!!?? Nice roads and clearing marked for the lane assist feature nearly the whole way should be ideal conditions for this technology and more 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼?
The M1 is good but some of the other roads (not including SOME OF THE BRUXNER Hwy) are horrific, you can put a can of coke in the pot holes and you still can’t see it LOL.
Thanks for sharing, congratulations on your new car which I hope it is running perfectly and you’re loving it & you’re happy with Northern Rivers driving conditions!!!!!

Like anything, buy what suits your agenda. Don't buy a small sedan to go through the outback on dirt roads, don't buy a Hummer to do your shopping twice a week. We can use EVs on the East coast in Queensland because there is a charging network along the Bruce Highway and servos and shopping centres have chargers as well. Do 300km, stop for a pee and coffee ,maybe a bit of food and charge the car while doing this.

Right tools for the right job. I bought a Tesla Model 3 Long range for my wife mainly for the extra range but also because of the AWD and performance. Could have got away with the standard range because so far we have never used more than 50% of the range and I have only used a public charger once just to see how it works.
Just plug it in when you get home and when you are ready to leave the next time you have a full charge, no "oh shit, I forget its empty, we need to stop at the servo, we are going to be late"
If we do go on a long trip I would not want to be arsed with tracking down working public chargers and planning my trip, we use my Prado.

As tesla and the muskrat and all the other EV makers
Forget that EVs have limits and aren't for everyone
Tho you won't find that in the show room brochure in the sales room
It's actually quite dangerous not informing people wanting to buy a EV
Especially if you and your family get stuck out in the middle of nowhere with a flat battery or its shit its self
How many people carry extra water / food and survival gear ?
Why would you risk taking your 80 grand tesla on a unsealed or gravel road or track past the black stump?

EV range is improving every year, power at towing is way better than diesel from a standing start, and the cost next year 2023 will drop below $40k for a new EV (currently it's $44k for base model Atto 3 or MG ZS driveaway, not 80k. Even a Tesla isn't 80k for RWD base model.)
The re original poster's post he said he uses EV for short trips and his Prado for long trips. Last time I checked Prado was an ICE vehicle which is a SOUND PHILOSOPHY for the current situation with charging stations in rural areas - as you acknowledge.

BYD is also using the Eaggers dealership network, not just MyCar. There’s no problem with BYD - one of the biggest auto manufacturers in the world - they sold more “new energy” vehicles than anyone in the world this year. We just don’t hear about it because it’s in China. In China they are considered a much better vehicle than the MG. It’s EV Direct who are the problem - as you pointed out changing warranties, using MyCar and the subsequent absurd service schedule and costs. You summed up KMart Auto/MyCar nicely - hope they don’t sue!

Unless I'm mistaken the BYD can charge 120kW-150kW DC depending on the model, so that's a full charge for a 60kWh battery for the Extended range in about 25-30 minutes. Tesla v4 supercharger, and 800V architecture in Porsches, Ioniqs, Xpeng and others which can handle 270kW, 350kW and 480kW respectively makes possible a 200km topup in as little as 5 minutes. The idea that you can't do a road trip in an EV because you have to continually stop for hours to recharge is quickly losing relevance.

BYD started to make cars in my hometown around 2003 when they purchased a production line making Suzuki Autos. Yeah internal combustion cars. The first mass produced model, F3, basically copied the Toyota Corolla at that time, and was the taxi used in my hometown. Needless to say they do know how to build cars. BYD was aiming at EV back at that time, and started to build petrol cars so they know how to do so.
They are not good at making premium cars, but they do have longer experience building EVs than SAIC(MG/HAVAL et. al) and their compact cars is quite good for the value.

If anyone is caught doing anything dodgy they’re hoofed out the door. I'm concerned that ICE may become quickly redundant should battery chemical and production prices start to make EVs hit price parity with ICE. At that point, the newer tech supplants the older one, and the older one rapidly loses its value. However, if concerned about range a PHEV may be a useful compromise.

    • @johnbambo9036
      @johnbambo9036 Рік тому

Correct, there are 3 things holding the Electrification of the world back (particularly here in Australia). They are infrastructure (inc disposal of old batteries). Secondly safety (exploding batteries in a crash situation). Look what happened to that ship in the Atlantic that sank with a bunch of VW, Porsche and Audi's. Lastly Battery technology. Once parity is reached with price and range/recharging then the ICE will struggle for relevance in the car market. Will Heavy Transport then follow? Don't write off the whole ICE thing just yet. The overriding objective is the environment and the health benefits that follow.

I mean u drive it to work park it in the sun all day and when u go home it's 100% and have it so it charges while u drive ,theoretically you'd always have a fullish charge, obviously not at night or in parking garages but for the most part it would charge itself and obviously you'd also still have the ability to charge off the grid for situations where solar charging isn't an option.

Another thing you mentioned to but didn't cover fully as the result of the inefficiency of the genset, charger and fuel was how far the petrol to re-charge the battery would get you if put directly into an ICE vehicle. At 13 litres to give you 150 kms, that's 8.6666 l/100 kms - not very efficient for a small car. For less than the $50k plus genset etc you can buy a car with a dedicated petrol tank that gets around 6 l/100 kms, and can be refilled in 5 minutes for the 300 kms that the EV would travel on 20 hours of charging.

Guy waiting there to charge recently was quite verbal abusing no-one in sight that the car hooked up was charged and the owner was no-where to be seen. Didn't know you could tell...
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for EV's. Well, maybe.
Ranges indicated in the glossy brochures are for a pristine battery. How about after a year or two or three or has everyone forgotten how their mobile battery shits itself in "health" by then.
Tech is rapidly improving, but I'll wait a few years until Australia gets its charging stations up to scratch (insert laugh now) and battery tech has improved for greater range. Probably come at the same time as the fast train from Sydney to Newcastle.
Speaking of batteries again - has anyone worked out how much a new battery is going to set them back after say, what, 5 years (more ?) when it degrades to the point where the range is compromised.
Wonder also what will become of the old battery ?
And don't get me started on Australia burning more coal to keep these buggers charged. You know Albo won't do anything about improving the grid like say (I've written to him and his ministers - no reply - funny that) incentiving people to stick panels on the roof as mini power stations to reduce coal burning. Nah, EV's are the go, damn the torpedoes and get one and we'll worry about how to deal with the grid another time or leave it up to the next government to deal with.

It makes no sense to buy any EV if you need to do any extra-urban driving on a regular basis. The most frustrating thing about EV's at the moment is the focus on super-luxury, high end EV's at the expense of development of small, light EV's suitable for urban environments. The obsession with range is, IMO, asinine as the longer the range, the bigger the battery which means it takes longer to recharge, and the longer range is wasted because in most cases, it is actually unusable because it takes you away from all the fast chargers in the city. For the vast majority of urban motorists, a 50km range is plenty and you could charge such a battery at a rapid charger in minutes rather than hours. Less resources consumed to make the battery, less damage caused to the roads by 3 ton electric utes with an unusable 600km range.
