Hey Tony, if going out of tune sharp, something is catching, nut slot usually too narrow for string gauge (especially on a gibson where g and d catch due to angle so those two slots need a 15ish degree cut on the headstock side left for d; and right, g, to avoid the sticking). If going flat, strings are not stretched out enough. In my experience unless your tuners are totally crap and the LP studio kluson/gibbies on your Tokai are not, locking tuners add little to a hard tail guitar (if string travel is totally unimpeded). Lovely tuners though from Gotoh. Keep up the good work 😊
Great info. I had lubricaly on the nut, and the strings are 9/42 on that guitar. I'll certainly look further if it continues and thanks for all that info... god for many guys.
Well this was perfect timing I need to put a set of these on my 1994 Gibson Les Paul Standard I was looking at a set of Grover’s or some Sperzels but after seeing the fit and ease of installation I think the Gotoh tuner look right on that guitar. The buttons look like original Gibson tuners.
Ohh Mr Mckenzie what will i do, i need a new guitar so i had better go to Crewe. Crewe is just 30 miles from where i live in Chester. Tokai made some great guitars in Japan, my parents bought me one to learn on and i hated the natural finish, i wanted one in Fiesta Red! like a fool i part-ex it for an Ibanez that had a slim neck that suited me better. You can buy Kluson style locking tuners that don't leave unsightly holes. Locking tuners make string changes easier, but rarely cure tuning issues With a Les Paul style the angle of the strings in the nut doesn't help, a well cut self lubricating nut makes a bigger diffference. I hope they help Tony, but experience tells me they might not.
Ha good to hear you and I sincerely hope you were not the guy who put it down at Crewe as I grabbed it :) At one stage I lived in BrynY-Baal if you know where that it :) but I'm back this side of the border since 1977. My Ibanez RG550LTD is wonderful! But... it's not an LP is it, they are just different. It might have been my half soaked string fitting causing the issues (I'm bone idle with those :) and the nut has lube on it, but we'll see. And I'll report back at some stage. Thanks for the tips...
Eh up Tone. Nice banjo. I have a (Japanese) LS150F - a '59-a-like. Great guitar. Mine still has the original tuners - Gotohs. No tuning issues, here. My gut feeling is your's might need the nut looking at, unless the tuners you took off were moving in their holes. In my experience, locking tuners don't fix tuning issues, but they do save time when changing strings - especially useful if you break strings when 'in battle'. You might find the extra weight on the head changes the guitar's tone, slightly too - bit like the old 'putting Grovers on in place of Klusons' in the old days. Great vid., by the way. Cheers.
Gotoh stuff is really good. I used their vintage style tuners on an old Epiphone G400 that came with one odd tuner and they are better than Gibson's tuners but the Epiphone guitar was also better than Gibson's newer SGs. You have to get the 90s Samick Korean made G400s and replace the pickups. Gibson Classic 57s being ideal on SG style guitars. These are the best bargain guitars ever. I have guitars that cost ten times as much and not as good.
Just to add. I find tuning problems on Gibsons are usually to do with the terrible splayed string angle at the nut. It's a bad design. The Epiphone I just mentioned has less string angle but better still are Heritage guitars. The string angle is much less but people want that iconic Gibson headstock unfortunately.
My parents and family are from near crewe Tony. My Dad is from Audlem, my Mum from Aston near Nantwich. Are you from around there? The gold tulip tuners look great on that guitar. I like the bean tuners on some of my guitars, tactile i think the word is😊
Thanks Tony, I was just about to order some and your thoughts and findings are very useful. As for the headrest Core you recently reviewed I'd love to see what you explore further. I've had mine for about a week now and I've tried electro acoustics through it as well. Have you?
I have not tried much right now as there are many reviews I'm working on and I have to come back 'later' so to speak... but I'll bear it in mind of course... and thanks for watching.
Are they better than Grover tuners not really a big fan of Grover they been hit or miss over the year's just like Jackson branded Floyd Rose it's been that way for a while now, need some better tuners what would you recommend gotoh been hearing about them thinking about changing out some of the Jackson stock tuners BC RICH bronze series tuners really suck as well
Well thanks for watching. Me? I tend to hardly change tuners, and for the guitars I build I usually get the Fender stuff that works for me in general. This Tokai guitar always had issues on the original tuners. I then fitted tuners from a Les Paul standard (I think they were). Those also kept the tuning issues. :) These Gotoh set did appear to change and solve the issue. I had previously checked and addressed the nut,, the way I wrapped strings on the posts and well, you name it nothing worked. So these are probably worth a try... So my experience is not extensive for tuners (other than the Fender ones) but as this is really a Les Paul and no trouble since I like them. Hope it helps and remember I DID pay for these so it's all real experience. and thanks.
@@tonymckenzieofficial well I changed our my tuners on my BC RICH bronze series warlock and I used some cheap ones that were less than twenty dollars they were cheap fake Grover tuners. And it made a good amount of difference. The BC RICH tuners wouldn't stay in tune worst tuners I have ever played.
@@tonymckenzieofficial okay Les Paul that's generally les Paul tuner's I think and sometimes they put Grover tuners someone said that they like gotoh tuners better than grover think I might try out gotoh tuners
@@tonymckenzieofficial I do like the idea of locking tuners. Have you seen the auto tune system on I think was epiphones or Gibson. Did that really work !!!! ?
locking tuners add nothing tuning wise over a properly wound similar quality conventional tuner, they just speed up string changes...and add more weight to the headstock.
That’s what I heard too. Would like to know for sure as I otherwise prefer non locking tuners. I’m tempted to buy some Gotoh tuners for a guitar of mine that has not so great tuners.
@@mkrj2576 30 years of building and playing guitars, never found a locking tuner that improved tuning stability over an equal quality regular tuner. You do know how to wrap a string properly though LOL.
I put a string butler on a Les Paul but mainly due it having a bigsby so tuning improvements were critical. They do help but wouldn't be necessary if Gibson had just improved the terrible headstock design. The shape has become iconic unfortunately so people want that look.
I sure hope TM gets another 10 million views 🎉 Good on you as always, a lot of great content lately
Thanks for the kind words... very appreciated.
Thank you for this video. I installed this Tuners in my Ibanez Rga 121 Prestige and they work perfect.
Great to hear! and thanks for watching.

I put lightweight gotoh’s on my jazz bass because of the neck dive. Made a big difference
This one does not have the neck weight problem but it can be a pain on SG's for sure. Thanks for the info on the Jazz Bass and thanks for watching.

Did they sort the tuning problem???

Fair comment. These DID help with the tuning on this guitar though quite a bit. Thanks.
Kluson Revolution Lockers are a direct replacement for that footprint, and they’re 21:1
Thanks for the info... always good to get recommendations of the other stuff out there... and thanks for watching.
Love this channel. Keep it up
Glad you enjoy it! and thanks for watching.
I stuck a set on my lp to replace the grover lockers, far better feeling tuners that can take a slightly thicker string :)
Crackin vid sir :)
Thanks for the info... and for watching too.
I’ve found tuners make no difference in LP’s. The nut cut and nut lubricant matter a whole lot though. Always enjoy the content. Cheers.
Nut did have lube on... but seemed to not solve it... maybe my crabby winding of strings! :) Thanks and glad you liked it...

mmmm...... lower post length - more friction at nut , no bending strings unless you slap some graphite oil on the nut.
