  • Space is always a premium for overland tourers and weekend family 4WD getaways. This is my solution to make the most of wasted space…
    In today’s episode I’ll be talking through and showing you how I went about designing, building and fitting a custom storage box to compliment the EmuWing side access panel on my Toyota Landcruiser 200 series.
    The space between my existing fridge box surround and the rear quarter panel window was wasted. From narrow and inconvenient access to the inability to organise or divide the space, this area was in need of some attention to create a neat, organised and easily accessible storage space for overloading travel.
    I have done a full review on the EmuWing side access panel for those who are interested: • EmuWing Installed on a...

    Absolutely a work of art, you are inspiring so many more additions to my rig! This after the disappointment with the emu wing installation, must make it feel worthwhile, everytime you open that side of the 200, all that dead space is now so useful👍

    Hey Nathan another well thought out design and exceptionally well detailed video. As a new 200 owner I'm constantly reviewing your vids to plan my build. Like yourself I'm to waiting for the new van to arrive at which hopefully most restrictions would have eased over here on the east coast so the family and I can start exploring this great country of ours. I rate you as one of the best content creators on this platform. Keep up the great work mate. Cheers Paul 👍

      Thanks Paul, it's awesome to hear that you are enjoying my videos and able to get some useful information from them. Have fun building your vehicle, the planning and building stage it one of the most enjoyable parts in my opinion.
      Ahh, the waiting game, our van has definitely taken longer than expected, however I can only hope it will be worth the wait. All the best with your setup, I'd be very interested to see how it all turns out in the end if you're keen to send a photo through on our Fb or Insta pages?
      Cheers, Nathan.

    Nice work! I agree with ply vs MDF. Ply has more strength for flex and vibration, and it'll be interesting to see how the MDF holds up over time and over rough roads.
    I built a similar thing for an a Delica many years ago. Same methods. I found that clamping the carpet while it adhered made a big difference, too.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 роки тому

      For sure, that was a novice mistake, however time will tell in regards to how well it will hold up. Otherwise it will be back to the drawing board for another ply version...
      Cheers, Nathan.

    Great job mate…inspiring. BTW I have seen “Gullwing” side windows installed on the side of 76 series LCs. Do you know if they can be used on LC200 & are they possibly better than the emu wing?

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 роки тому

      Cheers mate, I have seen these systems however to my knowledge they are only available for the 70 series vehicles at present. This leaves the EmuWing as the only option for the 200 series.

    Awesome job designing that. Suggest it could be a good spot for sunscreen, insect repellant, hand sanitiser, etc. Say you get out for a quick stop - its a good place to quicly prep the kids and be on the way. Could you fit a jetboil in there ?

    Hi, I'm about to do the same 12v mod to my passenger side on my 200. Have you got any tips on any changes you've done since making this video? I'm going to be using mine as a 12v hub to charge phones, drones, ipads, etc possibly a 12v oven later on. Thank you.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  Рік тому +1

      Awesome mate. So this system is still working really. Very happy with how it's performing overall.
      The only two changes I would make:
      1 - the construction of box really needs to by Plywood, not MDF. Nothing has failed, but it would be easier, lower profile and lighter.
      2 - Change the switch type to a press button. The rocker switches get knocked everyone and then when full of gear leaving lights or chargers on.
      Good luck with your build mate 👍

    How much of a gap have you left for the curtain airbags to inflate?

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 роки тому

      Not much of a gap left there, however the force would push these components backwards, away from the rear seat passengers. Just as if the cargo area was full of gear.
      Hopefully I'll never have to test this theory!
      Cheers, Nathan.

    A great use of space indeed. I assume you have no need to access the jack behind the panel, or have you put one in another location?

    • @XploringOz

      That's correct, I have removed the factory jack and replaced it with another heavier duty unit and placed it else where in the vehicle.

      Any 240v installation must be installed by a qualified 240v electrician, otherwise it isn’t legal. This includes having an appropriate CRD in between the inverter and GPO. Remember 240v can kill if wired incorrectly…
