  • Krysta Owings tells her story of experiencing a stroke at age 25 and the expert care she received at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Krysta was born with an AVM (arteriovenous malformation), which is a cerebrovascular disease that can cause bleeding in the brain and result in a stroke. After a successful surgery to remove the AVM, Krysta underwent a week of rehab at The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis and has fully recovered.

I came here expecting to learn about her recovery but it’s more like a hospital commercial-health care in the US is so strange! This young woman is incredibly fortunate that her AVM rupture was not severe. Many, like my daughter, are not that fortunate. My daughter received immediate help after her AVM rupture from amazing medical professionals-EMS, doctors, nurses, surgeons, neurologists, respiratory therapists etc., but In total my daughter was hospitalized for 8 months following her hemorrhage and surgery. She was 10 and she will never be fully recovered -ever. I’m glad this woman’s experience was different.

@@53lorettaable She is doing better than when I posted my first comment. Recovery from a brain injury is very, very slow. She still faces a lot of challenges that most 14 year olds do not, but I’m happy for all that she can do.

    Thank you for sharing.
On the 4th Nov 2019 my mum suffered a stroke as well. It was the most painful time of my life seeing her go through this.
I started the site @t to share good stroke information to everyone, and dedicated it to my mum.

What the heck is this she did not even have a stroke that changed anything. My friend had a stroke about a year ago and his soul is still alive but his body is not the same. This is not a stroke recovery thats my opinion and I am sticking to it. Kristen complained and she did not even have a big stroke wowzerzzzz...

There is a massive range of outcomes when it comes to stroke. Sometimes people look ok but they are still dealing with difficult deficits like dizziness, memory problems or seizures. My daughter was like your friend though. Her stroke left her completely paralyzed for months but very slowly she did recover very well. I hope your friend is doing a lot better. Sadly sometimes doctors can save someone’s life but they never recover a good quality of life. That’s the part they don’t tell you in the early stages.

Every person responds differently to a stroke. What I mean is, everything plays a role in the type of stroke that happens and how the body is affected by it! Now for Krysta, maybe her body response wasn’t as severe as others who suffered more acute strokes. Also she was rushed to the hospital in time enough for Dr Zippy to treat her symptoms not everyone makes it to the hospital fast enough thus becoming worse off as time passes. Another thing her eating habits, family history, genetics you know her makeup determines a lot when it comes to survival rates as well as age! I’m thankful now in 2023 that Krysta has recovered some now I still see she’s having trouble with speaking like it’s measured which means it’s not as free flowing probably as she once was before the stroke. I do see she struggles and might even struggle with walking because she did have to have brain surgery so I mean you can’t just bounce back from that it takes time to heal. I’m also thankful her friend was alert enough to get her help immediately because if she had left Krysta you know her symptoms would’ve gotten worse but thankfully they didn’t! But you know for everyone saying oh Krysta’s fine she looks fine why is she even featured in this promo well people can appear fine on the outside but internally they really could be suffering and even having symptoms that they ignore or feel will just go away then they wait and when the attacks happen they try to rush to the hospital and then it’s too late! So everything plays a role in your survival and recovery no two humans are the same idk about twins triplets and what not but my body is not the same as your bodies and my genes are not the same as your genes and that’s something you always have to remember we each have our own responses to whatever illnesses we come down with like cancer or lupus or heart attacks or strokes!

Having a brain AVM rupture is something that is very hard to explain to others. Your never the same person after the recovery. My biggest struggles to this day are short term memory loss. It’s not that bad now but whenever I’m multitasking it’s best to keep notes or some one just text me so I can check. Krysta if you want to tell your story more or see others that have faced the same struggles go to AVM survivors.org.

Cerebral stroke is a brain disorder. My friend also had this problem. She used various medicines but had no relief. Then she tried Ayurvedic treatment of "Planet Ayurveda". It includes Brahmi Capsules, Ashwagandha capsule, etc. It really worked on her.
