There is one million and one counting me. I had 3 strokes and my aphasia has gone from not speaking at all and after having speech therapy I talk pretty damn good now.(kind of). I was in the hospital 3 months and I never quit fighting. Don't never quit trying.

Hi! This was really good to know. My dad had a stroke almost a year and a half back and he lost partial speech. We tried getting a speech therapist on board for him but he refused to stick with it because he felt frustrated that he couldn’t talk. (He talks quite a bit but I think he’s super self conscious) can you please share your complete story and tips on how we can get him to start working on his speech? im so sorry to hear this about your mother. my dad has had 3 strokes since 2013 and I still find it hard now because he gets really angry and frustrated over things so now more than ever I'm trying to understand it more so I can try and help him, how is your mam now?
Thomas Wagstaff her stroke progressed terribly and almost died. She’s in a sub acute care facility now. Opens her eyes and that’s it at the moment. I’m heartbroken over the whole thing.

“Don’t speak for them” is the best Don’t! I had a stroke 30 years ago and although I can speak fairly well (not nearly as good as I used to!), people still tend to speak for me if I am not as fast as they would like!! It is very frustrating and very embarrassing! Thank you for this video!
Your video is dated Feb 2017. I had my strokes..6 of them in a few weeks....starting in 2017. I had to learn how to deal on my own. Wish we had your video.
Thank you. Been having a difficult time with my spouse with communication. Note××× It is just as scary for those of us who are trying to communicate especially not wanting to hurt their feelings trying to understand them.

Wish I had had this talk for some close to me after mine. My dr was in the hospital speaking to me and though I could hear and understand him, I couldn't pay attention for long and my eyes would close or I would look away or just nod. My mom got after me for what looked like rude behavior. Really angered me bacause I didn't have energy or care for an actual conversation in me that day. If your loved one has a stroke and appears not to be paying attention, it's because they can't at that moment. Please be patient, and above all, be positive and lightly encouraging. We have enough to stress about without hearing about how our behavior is bothering you.

My spouse just had a stroke and it took forever to bring her to the hospital.
While I visited her I stayed super strong emotionally, positive, patient and supportive in front of her but I am frankly quite worried and I know she is probably freaking out 100x more than me. She can't speak, but is sometimes able to moan or hum, can't really write real words and if they are real words they don't make sense in relation to the topic.
Sometimes even her mimes makes no sense.
I had a long day and I am now reading on strokes, their recovery and how to help the ones affected by it.
Hope this isn't too weird to you, I just really needed to talk as I have held all of this inside today and you sounded sweet+your profile pic actually remind me of her. She loves animals and is quite young too for a stroke.
If you could please share tips on what helped you or how you lived your experience or anything really I would be very grateful. I really hope she gets her speech ability back 90+%, she is such an intelligent and eloquent person.
What wrecks me is that she seems to have already given up, she has signified me she thinks it won't come back. But this is all very fresh (I just came back from my first visit) and emotions are high but you give me hope and I will share your comment with her parents and friends.

@@okkrom Ohh I am so sorry to hear your family is dealing with this! Sending hugs and love to you all. Thank you so much for your comment and inquiries! I wish more of stroke victims' loved ones would do some research and find some understanding. The person I first spoke of, who was irritated with my behavior, was my mother. Through the years of watching me come back from this, she has become my biggest advocate and will try to explain to my other family members what I'm dealing with. To be honest as most of the medical community deals with stroke, especially ischemic, as a temporary condition and most come back completely, I found the best explanations- and could identify the best- with a UA-cam channel for people with TBI's. (Traumatic Brain Injuries). It doesn't matter if you get hit in the head, have a massive stroke or even an ischemic stroke. The brain will function differently somehow and every case will be different. Remember that someone may look fine, and may recover quickly or slowly. Still, that person's life has changed. Emotionally, cognitively, sometimes physically, mentally even our identity is hard to find and rebuild. We need patience, sometimes prompting, always positivity, and someone to be an advocate, maybe for a long time. Check out a channel about TBI recovery, I forget the name (another constant issue) but search one about why grocery shopping is so hard after brain injury. Or "Why you can't get shit done" There's a medium-blonde woman on the thumbnail, and the song that plays at the video openings goes "when the rains came.. there's more to me than the wreckage you see.." These videos gave me a life raft. Definitely Do NOT treat the victim like a child, there's a fine line, and we know we need help and motivation, and you'll need to help us get started, like a kid with homework, set us up on the computer or help us begind filling out paperwork. But we also detest being belittled, spoken down to or treated like an idiot. Yes a month ago we could have completed this task just fine, but now, it like solving a really tough logic game and no scratch paper with which to work it out.

My dad's best friend had a brain tumor removed, when he came home from the hospital he had Aphasia. Guy had no family, nobody from the hospital said anything about Aphasia, my dad and I tried to help but we really had a hard time understanding him. Really wish I'd found videos like this before he passed.
My fiance has had a stroke, and I have issues with understanding him right now and this has been very helpful. Thank you!

My father was just admitted to the hospital yesterday due to stroke - doctors have diagnosed him with a mild stroke (sub acute ischemic) and he has aphasia - slight slurred speech. His nurse said that she believes he can understand the questions she is asking him but he is unable to express his answers fully - He is a fighter though and your video will help me help him to get better and be back to his old self real soon!

My dad has this issue and it's been very difficult for me to cope. Sometimes he can speak clearly but other times it's harder. He's also a bit disoriented in general, it's crushing to see him this way but videos like this helps me rationalize everything

My dad had a stroke and his short term memory is severely affected by it. He believes he lives in 1991, he is lost all the time, doesn't know where he is nor what he is doing... I am trying to gather as much info to make his recovery as smooth as possible.
How is your dad now ? Do u have an update
@@carmella88 I would say he is much better now, but not as he used to be. He is able to go alone for a walk, he cooks, etc. However, he still has issues with his memory, as sometimes he would just forget something - for example, he would call his mom at 10am, they would talk for 5-10 minutes. At 1pm, he would call her again, telling her how he called her in the morning, but she didn't answer and then it would just hit him that they talked already.
Funny, he remembers everything perfectly when it comes to food.

@@carmella88 He was over a month in the hospital, and he spent like a week on coma. Once he came home, he tried to speak, but his voice was very low, I could barely understand him when he pointed at the remote control and said "Three".
But after that, we were spending 24/7 with him, talking to him and letting him talk to us, no matter what nonsense he was saying. He watched a lot of movies and tv shows, all in our native language because he actually cannot see with his left eye anymore, so it was hard on him. And still is. He was unable to form an understandable sentence.
However, the worst part was when he was convinced that see talked to his dad or grandpa (both died in 1991).
If you are in a similar situation, and I truly hope you're not, just be patient with them. Don't get mad, disappointed, don't lose your nerves.
@@marinamarkovic1788 yes I am in a similar situation my brother suffered a massive ischemic stroke. At first he wasn't able to follow any commands now he's doing better hes in rehab right now. But im wondering if he will ever remember things or be the same person

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
My wife had a couple of strokes and at this point she can say yes and no, which sounds better than it is because she sometimes means the opposite. She can read words but not sentences and that is helpful. She can write some but I have found out that normally the two first letters are correct and then I have to deduct from the conversion what she means.
Her brain and memories are intact except from the above and a damaged right side body function.
On a daily basis we make the best of it. When we talk about things it helps that we’ve been together for 30 years, but when changing subjects it takes me a bit to zoom into the new topic.
The Do option where you tell to put up a couple or three options mostly ends up in my wife getting angry with me because I don’t put up the right options. So I shy away from that option as much as possible.

We're trying to learn a new (difficult) language in order to keep the brain as active as possible.
Im currently nursing a nearly blind family member, so she's unable to use text and pics.

Right now I am dealing with this with my wife, and have tried everything under the moon. She fully understand everything I say now, but can't repeat any words at all.

I'm in Australia and my long distance bff of 8 years had a stroke ladt week. He all.has aphasia on day 9. I managed to call hospitals and found him. The irony is I know him better than his parents I told him but I'm not on next of kin list ad he kept us private because othets don't understand long distance relationships. Now we cannot communicate. It is tragic and I asked nurse just before to please let him know that I know and that he is not alone and I send my love. I don't know if he underst sands rhem. I'm trying to find out if he can have flowers in his room. Thu don't seem to be sure. I am besides myself but can only pray. I don't know we his parents contact details.
Nice message but I don't think some options do not work for me. for instanc when I am questioned on yes or no answers I get confused and say yes when I really wanted to say no. Or trying to tell me if I want the green orange or red vegetable, just splatters my brain and overwhelming. I don't know what to do.

My brother had a surgery almost 3 years ago and he's recovered almost to 80℅ but his speech is not as good he's gotten more irritated and disturbed cause of it. And he seems to get disappointed with people not understanding him and he gets violent. And for the fact his wife has been very discouraging to him asking him to leave her cause he's not stable with his speech and his body language. My mother dad brother his wife live together. But they are financially low at the same time. Though my sister jn law is educated she doesn't want to financially support by doing a job. They are living in a life full of contributions from family and friends. If there's any source which can help. Him heal for free will be of great help. 😟😟😟😟
Need aphasia on computer aided to solve comment phone. Aphasia why unability with my unable to say since my only movement in two months.
A computer with a connection to the Internet can be helpful. The computer does not have to be new - nor expensive (I like used HP Z### workstations, but used Dell workstations or used Lenovo workstations are typically good too). However, the connection to the Internet should be a very good one. A "Lingraphica" AllTalk 'Communication Device' might be useful if your speech is severely hampered, and if your insurance will pay for it.

My mom had a massive stroke and then a brain bleed during surgery to remove the blood clot in her carotid artery. 9-13-22. Non verbal, paralyzed on rt side, can’t communicate!!!!
She was able to understand and shake her head yes or no or squeeze my hand for yes before surgery to remove the clot- then the brain bleed happened. After surgery, she can’t do any of these things. Today is 10-28-22. I know they say it takes time, but Is there a time limit on how much progress she will make?
She sometimes shakes her head yes, for example: Are you hungry? Mom: nods slightly and starts moving her mouth and tongue. She can nod slightly sometimes for no. Then there are times I make a statement to her and she shrugs her left shoulder (right side paralyzed).
So, she’s right side paralyzed, but her left side is strong. She can even drink from a cup and sometimes tries to use a spoon depending on if she has ilias. She’s had two stomach blockages that required procedures to unblock. Stomach infection due to the blockage I think? So upset stomach.
She’s unable to speak. She used to try so hard to talk to me. But now after a couple of weeks she’s stopped trying as often. If I ask her for a kiss, she reaches up and pickers her lips for a kiss. I have tried getting her to blink twice for yes. Nope. I’ve tried getting her to squeeze my hand for yes or no. Nope. I’ve tried to get her to thumbs up. Nope. So pretty much I have to rely on her facial expressions.
It’s been six weeks. I’m feeling deflated and frustrated. As I’m certain she is as well.
Any help at all I would appreciate any ideas. I’ve also tried giving her a marker and a note pad but she just tossed the market away. 😢 sometimes I feel like she’s doing well and progressing. Other times I feel like she’s regressing. They were tube feeding her at first, then she graduated to clear liquids. Then to purée foods. I think that may have been too much. But also, she had a spell of diarrhea, and the facility gave her medication for that, which I believe is what caused the second blockage. I’m not for certain. Now she has a terrible tooth abscess AND a very large UNGRADEABLE bed sore because the facility was NOT turning her unless to change her bedding once a day. When I am with her, I feed her, clean her, and move her from side to side. I’m wondering if I should bring her home since I’m doing the things that are important and they are not. PLEASE HELP!!!!

@@jetfu400 well, we tried and still do, his expressive aphasia hasn't improved much.. but the good thing is that he tries his absolute best to describe what he wants using gestures etc until we understand... His receptive aphasia is fine, he could understand us well. His writing is also not clear, even though sometimes some words are.. overall, compared to day one. Not much has changed, we just learned to adapt and we're happy he's fine and positive about it. 😌

Is aphasia a thing that can have only one of the symptoms. I have brain injury and I have MS described "High Disease Burden "
Is it possible to only have OCCASIONAL difficulty finding words, along with what I call "bad brain day".
Is this a thing.
These days can last weeks along with difficulty of my own "regular symptoms", its frustrating and I don't know if there is help for this.
My children are scared when they ride the "bad brain days" coaster with me. Is this aphasia?
