  • The first Lancer Evolution used the 2.0 L turbocharged DOHC engine and AWD drivetrain from the original Galant VR-4 in a Lancer chassis and was sold in GSR and RS models. This engine was also used in the Mitsubishi RVR with the Hyper Sports Gear trim package, and the Mitsubishi Chariot Resort Runner GT. The RS was a stripped-down version that lacked power windows and seats, anti-lock brakes, a rear wiper, and had steel wheels to weigh approximately 70 kg (154 lb) less than the 1,238 kg (2,729 lb) GSR, ready for racing or tuning. The RS version was released with a mechanical plate type rear limited-slip differential (LSD). The GSR came with all of the conveniences of a typical streetcar, including a digital screen climate control system. It came with Mitsubishi's 4G63 engine producing 247 PS (182 kW; 244 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 309 N⋅m (228 lb-ft) at 3,000 rpm.[5] 5,000 of the first generation Evolutions were sold between 1992 and 1993.[6] Top speed was 228 km/h (142 mph). The GSR version of the Evolution I was the only Evolution Lancer released with a Viscous Limited Slip Rear Differential (VLSD). The subsequent Evolution Lancer models all featured rear mechanical plate type LSD's.

the Evo 4 is my favorite as well. Dreamed of converting my 97 Mirage into one, but had some sense knocked into me early on. I would have convert to AWD, swap from the 4G15 to 4G63 and convert to manual transmission. At this point, in a few years it might be eaiser to just import an actual Evo IV into the US. I probably never will, but it’s great knowing the possibility is there. I love all generations of the Evo though.

Live in the uk, only 13 left registered on the road here, bought the first one at 23 in 2003, then 5 years later I started looking for another clean one, the hunt took me 10 years and over 6k miles travelling to look at 8 others until I found the one, and home she came with me to join the family! 11 days later a Lexus driver got confused between the 2 pedals in her car and rear ended it whilst parking!!!! Unfortunately she has been sat in the workshop since as we piece by piece, panel by panel pull her apart, straighten and and refit as much of her original parts as possible until her former glory is returned, and at the same time she will be treated to a nice fresh engine build and some subtle toys! With the kind of passion involved with owning and maintaining two of these girls, it would probably be easier to give up one of my kids than one of my girls! Lol

When I look at Mitsubishis actual cars, I don't know if I should lough or cry. They just betrayed their glorious history.

I reaaally wish that we would have had access to the great cars like gtrs evos stis etc. I’d love to have a evo5. Any gtr. The Japanese cars of the 90s truly changed the game.

This thing was part of an era where Mitsubishi made amazing cars that were not only lighter than their competition but had more power too. It's like seeing a Type R with 450hp stock and weights less than 1550kg. If Honda ever makes a "lightweight" hybrid Type R that's also affordable like this EVO of the past.
