Don't get me started with Neil Young. Down by the River, Southern Man, Needle and the Damage done... there's so much there.
Just 3 of many great suggestions for the playlist of Neil Young. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I'll second Needle and the Damage Done. First song I learned on guitar, followed by Helplessly Hoping (although I believe it was Stephen who wrote that one).
Down By the River is a great song.
@@rayj1011 The instrumental break in that song is unreal.
Cortez the Killer
When you get a chance Neil Young's Heart Of Gold is such a great song to experience.
This is a must do...
Seconded.
And if you can, the original studio version is the one to listen to. Linda Ronstadt & James Taylor sing back-up vocals on it.
Heart of Gold from this same concert is a must.
@@a3sthetik That's the one I was thinking. 💯🔥
Yes take it from the same concert if you want live.
I've been listening to Neil young since I was 15and I am now 67. My mom bought me his Heart of Gold album for Christmas that year! She always told me that I had a heart of gold and that's why she got it for me. Awww love that Mother of mine!💋
The whole Harvest album is a true masterpiece!
You should also listen to Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. A terrible and beautiful song that Neil wrote
absolutely! I think he should listen to anything from the CSNY catalogue to be honest... theres too many amazing songs for me to even make a list (I'll probably come back and edit this later with a proper list tho haha). I fully support any Neil Young related reactions on this channel.
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and the story behind it… favorite song of all time. Great call with CSNY.
@@felixculpa9390 oh man thats one of my all-time favorites, along with Carry On and Wooden Ships... so atmospheric and so emotional, I love CSNY! first concert i ever went to and also best concert i ever went to (and that was in the late 90's but they were still throwing fastballs as a group live, incredible)
@@ewolffman they were my first concert as well, Chicago opened. It was electric.
@@felixculpa9390 wow i wish i could've seen chicago back in the day... what a band. true story - our drinking/party mix back in college (and this was early 2000s mind you) used to include several chicago tracks, and they always killed! you wouldn't expect 20 year olds to be vibing to 25 or 6 to 4, or saturday in the park, especially after following up 50 cent or pour some sugar on me or whatever... but great songs transcend time, and both CSNY and Chicago had plenty!
Just Neil Young playing his guitar can give my brain the illusion of a 3 or 4 piece band playing. It's incredible.
And I love watching him play.
One of the most amazing things about Young as a guitarist is that he can give you such different sounds and textures on the acoustic and the electric, and he's incredible at both. You'd never know it was the same guitar player if you heard this version of "Old Man" and then heard "Cortez the Killer" or "Cinnamon Girl."
Aaah genius ❤️☮️💯
His guitar playing is so sophisticated and compelling, I've listened to him for 50+ years and I still am amazed by it.
This song. This song... I heard it first when I was 20 back when it came out. I was the young man then, and the song followed me through the many stages of my life. Now, now I'm the Old Man listening to a young man sing about how he's just like me. Love this song.
Me too. I'm almost exactly the same age as Neil.
A terrific older track that stands up to the test of time. Just haunting.
The Needle And The Damage Done is an incredible song about drug addiction and worth a listen. Tonnes of emotion poured into that composition.
Edit: Actually, the whole Harvest album is a damn good listen.
Harvest Moon with Linda Ronstadt on backing vocals is a great tune.
Having lost too many to heroin and its many cousins, I weep through tat song
I can only applaud the suggestion of both the song itself, but also the album in general! I have old friends who failed to take that advice, and who are no longer around. I miss them!
@@benandemmasmom I remember when the song first came out,if that song doesn’t evoke some kind of emotion in your sole ? Well I’d be speechless ..
@@JRcomments Agreed!
"It doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you" is the hardest lyric ever.
Probably my favorite but oh, what a catalogue of great music he has. "Down By the River"..."Heart of Gold"..."Cinnamon Girl"...all are worth checking out.💙☮
Revolution blues , Cortez the killer, Heart of gold, Hey hey my my and Harvest Moon all worth checking out among many others. After the Gold Rush , whole albums is definitely worth listen a classic album by Neil Young.
This song is dope. Another great one from this session is Heart of Gold.
Needle and the damage done is another great one from this same performance.
Definitely
Can't do Neil Young without listening to "Needle and the Damage Done" and "Heart of Gold".
Neil, Yeah. What like a dozen bands, solo, different genres, supergroups. The Godfather of Grunge. When he got Hank Williams SRs Martin acoustic he said I'm really just a hippy with way to much money. He owns Lionel trains. The iconic scale model electric trains. Still putting out music at 76 (last Friday his birthday)
And still supporting small farmers and ranchers...
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Indeed!
Neil is the single greatest musician of his generation. His electric stuff has just as much impact as the acoustic, but it's his impact on other musicians, on his millions of fans, and on the music industry as a whole that boosts his legacy into a rarified place that only a tiny handful of other musicians have attained. No other musician I know of combines Neil's songwriting skills, performance mastery, genre-bending, social messaging, and unshakeable loyalty to his musical vision. It's as hard to find enough superlatives to describe Neil as it is to make a list of songs to represent his career.
Keep on listening. It's a long satisfying journey.
So much Neil Young to love.
Check out Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young too. Harmonies like you won't believe were possible.
I could tell by your expression how much you enjoyed this song. 💜 Neil Young is a master at songwriting. So many of his songs are performed by other artists, but Young evokes more emotion when performing his own work. All of the previous recommendations are great. I'll just add that if you prefer listen to full albums, based on this reaction, I'd recommend *Silver and Gold.*
Neil's acoustic guitar playing is really killer. Rhythm, bass notes, chords on top etc. Truly unique.
Agreed. The way he plays little riffs inside of chords is actually pretty strange. I can't think of anyone else that plays like that. It's like he's playing two parts at the same time.
Harvest was released in 1972.
Neil introduces the song as being NEW, so this LIVE performance could be before the album's release.
Neil's voice is sublime and faultless on this recording.
In response to Andrew's comment, I feel that when Neil plays Guitar, it sounds like two Guitarists.
I'm watching his playing action and I'm asking myself, how is he doing that?
Well, being a super human and genius may have something to do with it.
After decades of listening to and watching Neil Young, I've come to a personal conclusion that he is definitely one of the best Guitarists on the Planet.
I recommend that you all listen to the LIVE album called WELD, which was released in the early 90's.
RUST NEVER SLEEPS is OK, though fairly weak in areas that WELD is much stronger.
I'm so pleased that Neil and I share the same political opinions.
BTW, Neil is a Right-Handed Guitarist.
Heart of Gold please ! Neil Young is an outstanding artist. When I learned playing guitar as a teenager in the 80s, my playbook had songs only from The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, & Neil Young. This was the level of appreciation.
It's almost impossible not to smile listening to this song.
I only heard this about 2 years ago for my first time, I must have listened to it a 100 times since then
Neil Young is amazing
You'd probably love his Silver and Gold album.
GODDAMMIT THIS MADE ME CRY! I was 18 when this song came out, and I loved him and his previous work. Now that I'm 68 and I've become the subject of this song. Instead of looking forward, now this song takes me back, with all of the joys and sorrows. Thanks for the memories, MrLboyd.
You can't go wrong with any Neil young song! "Heart of Gold" has always been my favorite by him! Great reaction Mr. LBoyd!
Thank you for doing this. Neil is a treasure.
Neil is from Canada where he started his career. He was actually in Rick James' band The Mynah Birds before moving on to Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, then going solo with the band Crazy Horse backing him. He has shared the stage with all the Greats from Bob Dylan to Willie Nelson, etc, etc.
Don’t forget how her drove in a hearse to the USA
Think he was born in Ontario, but he grew up in Winnipeg
Neil Young & Randy Backman - Prairie Town.mpg
A song that Neil wrote about the Kent State Massacre (Ohio) was not only timely, it was the most emotional song I can think of off the top of my head.
4 Dead in OHIO
What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground
Yup
I reccomend yall check out the isley brothers version called "ohio machine gun" its a mixture of the song you mentioned and jimi hendrix machine gun
Tin soldiers and Nixons coming
One of the greatest,, my all time favorite.
I am 73,, do the math, and I still listen to him and his first three albums when I am driving down the road.
The needle and the damage done…that’s a good Neil Young song. His MTV unplugged was great and also the story behind it.
Other songs you should listen to by Neil young.
1. Don't let it bring you down
2. Mr soul the acoustic version
3. Expecting to fly
4. Country girl
5. Heart of gold
6. From Hank to Hendrix
7. Cowgirl in the sand
8. A man needs a maid
9. The Loner
10. Last trip to Tulsa.
All of these are great songs
#7, just go through that whole album man.
@@DanPyjamas every body knows this is nowhere is an amazing album.
Neal Young has incredible pipes! His voice conveys a haunting hunger for 💘 love and acceptance!🎤🎤🎸
I've never seen you smile 😃. It's nice to see you like something especially Neil Young. He's amazing then and now.
Amazing to think these guys in 1971 were watching Neil roll out a song that would still be played in 2021.
THE NEEDLE AND THE DAMAGE DONE. Hits home to lots and tears you up. Extremely emotional and down right sad as hell
Heartfelt summary of an acoustic classic song which was the follow up to Heart of Gold also found on HARVEST his masterpiece LP.
"Neil Young " were literally two of first words I taught my grandson to say. We'd listen to his repertoire together. Watch his performances. There is so much to appreciate.
Harvest Moon 🌛🌝 and Heat of Gold 💛
Heard this song for the first time when it was released... I'm a few years younger than him... it still hits me the same way after so many years. Glad a younger generation is appreciating it.
Neil is brilliant at these heart-felt ballads, but he can also rock your face off with the very best of them.
Thank you for sharing sir! Neil Young is my greatest influence for the very reasons you point out. 😎
NEIL YOUNG "HEART OF GOLD" From This Same Performance...A Must Hear Classic.
I was blessed to hear his Performance in the 'Waldbühne', Berlin, Germany. Thousands of Peoples listening. On stage. One acoustic Guitar. One Neil Young - Amazing!!!
One of the best acoustic songs ever.
True superstar at the top of his game absolutely love this song. Glad you could enjoy
Imagine being in that crowd and being the first people to ever hear this song… this song is perfect. Thanks for doing this one. I’d recommend Heart of Gold next. Great reaction 🙋🏻♀️👍🏼🙌🏼👏🏼💜🇨🇦
from his early work as a founding member of Buffalo Springfield all the way thru to CSN&Y then SOLO career and Beyond the man's mountain of work is a legacy of epic proportion .
Old man is a fantastic song.
One of the best, singer and song writer's ever, and he is still going strong 💯
Neil Young was always a favorite singer-songwriter of mine. James Taylor is another. Storytellers. "Ohio" of course is required listening for Neil. It was done during one of the times he was with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and within a few hours. "Carry On" is another. Neil was also with Buffalo Springfield. He is Canadian so you get a slightly different flavor to his songs.
A new singer-songwriter that expresses emotion well within the story is Avi Kaplan.
"First Place I Go" is a brand new one of his and I highly recommend it as well.
This performance of Old Man gives me chills every time I hear it. So glad we can all share this incredible music!
Oh My! You have such an amazing and calming voice... I could listen to your voice all day long.
💕❤️💕❤️💕
I LOVE NEIL YOUNG!! What a king, what a legend. Thanks for this:)))))
His album “Harvest” is an absolute masterpiece. My friends and I used to jam these songs during high school lunch back in 71 and 72.
Neil Young has been a long time favorite of mine. The songs he writes and sings feel so real to me. My late brother loved him so much, too. I have a nephew named Neil, too.
Neil is a little before my time, but I've always loved "classic" rock. One of my best memories is when I was 17 in the 1997 and my dad taking me to Neil's "Bridge School Benifit" show in San Francisco area and being amazed by his live performance. As well as seeing three great harmonica players (Neil, John Popper and Alanis Morissette) along with Dave Matthews on the stage at one time. Absolutely incredible.
Seeing Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson performing together was also a sight to behold. Grunge and Goth music forever! 🤘
Heart of Gold and Unknown Legend are 2 of my favorite Neil Young Songs.
After over 40 years of listening to this song it never gets old. Crosby, Nash, Stills and Young, even better.
Neil Young is iconic. He has done SO many great songs! OHIO is a must, but this and Heart of Gold will always be my favorite,
A Canadian Treasure!!! A singer songwriter pure n simple!!! Peace brother
Keep on Rockin in the Free World by Neil Young
“Needle and the damage done” is hauntingly beautiful. And “harvest moon” is a sweet, loving song. I recommend those 2
Awesome memories come with this song, thank you 🤩‼️ Neil young was a one man band and so talented.
I was in jr and high school in the 70’s. Man this guys songs always had a hypnotic effect on me.
Needle and the damage done is definitely my favorite Neil Young song, this one is a very close second.
Neil Young is the real deal, he's been doing it for 50+ years. His acoustic work will melt your heart, and his electric guitar will melt your face.
Check out his songs Southern Man (1970), and Alabama (1972). These two songs inspired Lynyrd Skynyrd to write Sweet Home Alabama in response. These songs might make a good set of songs to react to, like you would dis tracks.
Literally anything by Neil Young is amazing.
A 50 year old live performance that stands the test of time. Flawless.
This was a BBC concert very small and acoustically really well done for a number of his early songs, this really was an incredibly good showcase of his talent as songwriter/instrumentalist/ vocalist...real and remarkable
I've heard this song thousands of times and it always seems to have new meaning to me each and every time I listen to it
React to our house Neil Young and also for what it's worth by the the Buffalo Springfield when Neil Young was a member of that group
Neil Young was part of a couple VERY successful bands before going out on his own
He is also considered the father of grunge rock (the Seattle music scene).
he is also known as the mother of Dragons .
I love how honest and fair your opinions are. New subscriber!
Powder Finger is an incredibly powerful song, and good example of Neil Young's ability at story telling.
"Needle and the Damage Done" is a must-listen.
Neil Young. Unnm yes now you ve found talent. Started out in a great group called Buffalo Springfield. Then went to Crosby, Stills and Nash and others. Probably singing a song and playing his harmonica somewhere right now. So many old songs he sang. Great memories from listening to his music.
I really like Neil Young's music because it is so evocative. It reaches inside you and plays on your younger memories and emotions like a golden guitar. Neil is up there with James Taylor as a master song writer as well as a guitarist. So many warm familiar memories of mine are associated with Neil Young's epic music. 🥰
Your voice is as smooth as melted butter 🧈 on a hot roll. Js!
Sugar Mountain is beautiful, too. Neil Young is my favorite artist.
MrLboyd, to get the full Neil Young experience you should, either on your own time or on your channel, watch his concert film called Rust Never Sleeps. It was recorded in San Francisco, Ca. on Oct. 22, 1978, Neil is the director but is credited as Bernard Shakey. He starts out with about five acoustic songs then is eventually joined on stage by his electric backup band, Crazy Horse. Neil also plays piano, harmonica and of course electric guitar, and the music runs the full gamut from rock to distorted electric, and everything else in between. I've seen Neil live four times, and it has been a completely different experience each time. And all amazing in their own way. Probably my favorite artist as a person too.
Love how he tells the story. Goosebumps every single time!
THERE YA GO!!! :) 50 YEARS AGO THIS WAS, NOW NEIL'S THE OLD MAN, YIKESSSSSS! :) IT'S SO GOOD THIS AND MANY OTHER 70-71 BBC CONCERTS.
A great deal of the music from this age is heart felt. 60s and 70s were a fantastic time for the music industry.
One of the best songs ever written!!!💜💜💜🎵🎼🎶🎸🎤🥁🎹 Released in 1972!!!
Dig In MrLboyd..Neil Young has a deep and extensive catalogue of music. His unique and very emotional voice rings through in all of it. Mr Young is one of the all time greats.
Heart of Gold, The Needle and the Damage Done, and Rockin' In the Free World are some of his other can't-miss songs. Young is an absolute treasure.
Now you’re taking me way back. Another great song, Teach Your Children was recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash and [Neil] Young, though written by Graham Nash.
Heart of Gold! Neal Young, should be next in his many songs!
Fantastic artist from my college days. I see comments below of many of his songs. You can't go wrong with any of them. Love the reaction.
This is sooooo cool !!! This is exactly what Neil young is about sooooo glad you heard it live not his recorded version completely different So awesome to see other ppl all kinds of ppl get it!!
To sit alone, singing and playing a guitar, entertaining an audience, yes, amazing.
I'd think of my Dad when I heard this song back in the day. Well, Dad's been gone now for a number of years and I am the old man now. Life is short my friends. Love you Dad. 😢😎✌
One of my favorite songs by Neil. ❤️
Until I saw this performance on UA-cam, I always thought of this as an ode that Neal wrote to his father. A timeless classic!
Heart of Gold, After the Gold Rush, The Needle and the Damage Done and Don't Let it Bring You Down are my favorites of his and you'll probably enjoy all of them.
These small acoustic sessions were so awesome! We had so many talented young singer/songwriters who were just coming into popularity. You can hear a pin drop when he starts singing. I miss those days ☮️🌻❤️🙏🏼👵🏼
Great video man. Neil Young is my fave of the older rockers. Needle and the Damage Done is another beautifully sad song. ☮️❤️
Don't get stuck in just the early-70s with Mr Young; he's continued his varied & brilliant output. Try "Powderfinger" (live, 1979), "Rockin' in the Free World" (1989), "Harvest Moon" (1992), or "Be the Rain" (2003) for tunes across the years!
Very well said! Great suggestions to give an idea of how versatile and talented Neil Young is. Also, to see him live both acoustic and electric is amazing.
So true!
My favorite post Harvest, The Shocking Pinks
Another GREAT Canadian.....guy is truly amazing. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young came out w/some amazing tunes.
"Doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you". Pure genius.
