You must explore podcasting if anupama permits. Your content would be perfect for one-hour-plus podcasts.

Wow Awesome episode BR sir. My mom, brought up in AP, got married to my dad in 1973 and came to TN. She did not know Tamil and even barely understood what my dad spoke in his tamil-accented Telugu (it actually was an arranged marriage). My dad took her to these Tamil movies, where they live in Royapettah. She enjoyed each and every movie she watched. My dad must have been her interpreter. She recommended these movies to me, her favorites were Sila Nerangalil...., Moondru Mudichi, Agraharathil ... (which I am yet to see), Aval oru thodar... , and towards later years even Kadhal Oviyam which I recorded the songs off the TV into my tape recorder as she was madly in love with Raaja sir s music. Those indeed were the golden years, I enjoyed the villainy Rajni sir so much that I refused to see his movies in the 80s as I did not enjoy his acting any more... Of course my fav were Thillu Mullu (saw it more than 10 times) and Toyota scene in Ninaithaale..... The 70s were indeed the best era for the Tamil movies. I recently watched a Kamal movie where he dies at the end after contracting STD because of his loose lifestyle. It was very interesting, cant remember the name of the movie. Just yesterday, I was mentioning to my husband 16 vayathinilae scene where Kamal asked Rajini, " Give me my money, I have to go home else my mom will reprimand me", how wicked Rajini looks in that scene and how persistent Kamal is....

"Mayangukiral oru madhu" and "uravu solla oruvan" and "swargam narakam" were really good. "Oothapoo kann simittukirathu" showed that Sujatha was the right challenge to kamal.

16:42 - What is the problem with taking a book and adapting it?
Sadly people don't read books anymore, BR. Due to the experience of reading school books, they've got stuck into a mentality that books are boring.

It is a decade that is very close to my heart as well. I can’t help but notice an undertone that audiences today are quite touchy feely about anything and everything in the movie and are not evolved to appreciate the techniques, the narratives, the differences in music and background scores, the factor that realism brings to movies, the ability to just be engrossed in the story telling and not use movies as escapism, to appreciate that there are ensembles rather than just super hero movies and I could go on. It is quite unfortunate that we don’t have a market for movie that might be willing to experiment or are more evolved. Hopefully we will get there some day.

Let's get honest. More heroism and baddas thing came from mid 90s. where ppl started objectifying woman and ladies continued to accept these roles. I personally blame super heros for those narratives and still heroines doesnt get to do much thing rajni movies these days, same with Surya ( Jo continues to give lecture to others but still shes ok with Surya using woman only for romancing). It starting to change and will take its own time, but audience need to stop worshiping heros and mass commercial cinemas and shift towards more content.

May be it has to do with better outdoor lighting cameras because all the outdoor or uncontrolled environmental shots were not good so they can set it relatively in some what natural environment which might have pushed them to do relative realistic themes like poverty, hunger etc

This video's very title made me smile ... Watched JM's 9th movie so far ...
70's had such enviable collection of movies. I am awed at the powerhouses we have had and their masterpieces that showed up onscreen. KB was ruthless with the conservative crowd and that was orgasmic to watch. He continued to make movies of his kind and I trust he prioritized the relevant boxes than just profit and stars. Something that the rest yielded to. What pained to watch was a filmmaker as JM broke away from his forte to masala, esp., with his Rajini movies. The artistic freedom combined with the audience's growing immaturity changed the landscape. The whole idea of a South Indian being called a Madrasi is because we were a class at some point that lost its own sheen because the worshipping culture began. Even today, fools are willing to die for their stars.
Not sure if this was also the time of decline of actors like Sivaji Ganesan but Rajinikanth's increasing swag seem to have appealed to the youth since the 70's. Now nobody knows any literature or music or dance ... All are into cinema and between Vudhiri Pookal and Mullum Malarum, I would anytime prefer the former. The idea of actor got corrupted during the transition from 70's to 80's ...

BR sir, this is probably a childish question I am not sure. What is the difference between a movie like agraharathil kazudai (art film) and a realistic movie like veedu . I see that when ever you talk about art cinema you mention agraharathil kazudai but not veedu is there any reason like veedu not being a art cinema?

Tamizh cinema's quality reduced from late 1970s onwards. 1950's and 1960's tamizh movies were great(apart from useless MGR movies).
