This was such a lot of fun! We got stuck and unstuck a few times :-) Lots of digging snow. Learned more about how to drive snow too. Like when it is very deep, if you want to stop, reverse back a bit, otherwise you just sink in and can't start again. Thanks again for the video Jordi!
I watched a 4runner, snow bashing snow trails in Colorado, he had chains fore and aft. That thing looked like it was driving on dry ground, made it look easy. Great video.
@Rocky Mountain Ras - Front chains would have been great! Snow is not a regular occurrence in South Africa. We only have a few weeks of snow in some high lying mountain areas. Matroosberg is one of them. We really enjoy the snow when we get it. Thanks for the like.
First of all, buy a small air compressor for the tires. Then lower your air pressure to about 10-15 lbs. psi. Don’t rev your engine, the key is having your tires turn slow in snow. Even when you feel like it’s getting bogged, as long as your inching forward in low gear your good. Hitting the gas peddle and spinning the tires will cause the tires to dig, you don’t want that. You want slow turning soft tires that grab the snow and you will cruise right through the snow. I rarely have to rev my engine in snow.
i bridgethegap4u Thanks for the tips. Snow is not a usual thing for us South Africans except in some very high lying areas. We just had fun fun conquering Matroosberg. Will try your suggestion out next time we have decent snow.
4WD BOX, yeah I snow wheel in northern California. I don’t have lockers, just an old 1997 Tacoma that’s 4x4. No lift, all stock. I’ll share another trick. It doesn’t work all the time but it works and can keep you off roading and not digging in the snow. Try this, when you start to get stuck and your know your going to get stuck apply pressure to the breaks as you keep a steady gas pedal. So, the reason for applying your breaks (if you don’t have front lockers) is to put pressure on the wheels that are loosing traction. As you start to get stuck in the snow, one of your tires isn’t moving and three are spinning. When you apply your breaks, the tire that is spinning the most will have break pressure and the tire not moving will start turning. This is a poor mans limited slip, lol. This actually works. Not all the time but more than 50% of the time I get out of slippery situations in snow doing this. I drive stick too, you won’t stall out because your tires are spinning which is why you don’t have to float the cutch. Try it...it will work better than you think.
i bridgethegap4u I’ve never heard that before but makes sense. Will give it a try if I’m ever stuck in a vehicle with no lockers. The FJ has A-track that pretty much does what you have explained. Thanks for the trips!
Hey Daniel @James Black would be the best person to answer this. I would say it depends how you set them up and the coils you use with them. From my experience its a beautiful ride.
NICE seems like a monday morning drive in my fj in Fairbanks,Alaska I highly recommend STT pro's that are siped they are beastly I drive about 40 miles round trip a day and rarely have to put it in 4x4 unless its 6 inches plus a snow. Also let up on the gas tire chains are a waste of money. slow and steady wins the day.
andrew johnston hey mate, thanks for the advice :) as Jordi mentioned, we don't do this every day. Normal video rules do apply for that first right foot flat section. Its really steep! Needed momentum and spinning to get the snow out of the tyres! Also the tyre chains were the only reason we got to where we were. Pewag makes some really great all metal ones.

CanDoSlim really enjoyed the adventure. Looked like you guys had some fun too!
CanDoSlim thanks so much :)
Crazy, nice driving! I just keep staring at the edge waiting for it to give.
Nice view. A set of snow chains will make a massive difference.🤙🤙

We had such an awesome trip there last year!
Awesome stuff! Would love to tackle fresh powder on Matroosberg
Nothing beats it Hendri.

Man! You guys are Nuts! 🤤😲
💙my fj cherry ! Saludos 🇲🇽
Would like to know how the BP 51 changed the FJ's ride?

andrew johnston thanks for the advice Andrew. Being in South Africa we don’t get a whole lot of snow-driving experience.

An FJ is - well an FJ
Настоящие джигиты молодцы.
Maybe you should get a second pair of snow chains so the fj doesn't have to work so hard.
I don't know, but here is a stupid suggestion..how about putting chains on all 4 wheels so they'll have the same amount of traction..think about it..
Can’t. Factory recommends not to.
