I think those Too Cute to be Binary shirts are pretty iconic...also my intersex friends and I started calling ourselves the Comma Girls (no periods allowed!) Thanks for the great content!

I like the snail imagery idea, plus snails r cute af sooooo.... also as you said some snails are naturally purple; in ancient times certain snails around the grecian Mediterranean were used in the production of the color Tyrian purple. So in my mind, the use of the color purple in conjunction w/ the Greek purple snail then becomes a full circle imagery; that being we have an ancient mythology about us founded in ancient Greece, i.e. the mythological character Aphroditus, or the earliest myth incarnation being found in Cyprus as Hermes & Aphrodite being the parents to the intersex Aphroditus. Complete with cult worship and entire temple complexes. One can see the compound linguistic result that formed the problematic H word which has only been out of mainstream use for what, 10 years? Max? I find power in that as well, to retake the power of our language and use its imagery as our own, i.e. the color purple and snails in relation to intersex terminology. As a factoid, the H word was formed in ancient Cyprus circa 1570 b.c., so that means the intersex community has been able to overcome appx. 3400 years of linguistic word use. That's obv a far more complex subject in and of itself and I feel that sentence doesn't do it justice but this comment is like hella long and I need to keep going on my crosstitch and get more coffee....I really love this video as well its really educational digestible and you present it in a very interesting way.

Haha, the part with trying to draw the circle was so well done! (and so true...such a good flag, but darn drawing circles!)

Love your videos! I enjoy using the mercury symbol ☿ as a witchy gender nonconforming intersex symbol. There's a Greek mythology background, and a botanical (whoa) background for connecting the ☿ and intersex. I'm not very aware of all that, but the symbol just speaks to me.

I also feel this way about the mercury symbol! It's a great thing in my opinion 💜💛

Thanks for another great video Hans!! Really enjoyed it. Your introduction with pink colored things always makes me giggle.
Idk if this is okay to ask... but could you talk more about the history of the H word? I've read up on it but would love to hear more from someone within the intersex community?
I would also be interested to hear about what happens if someone finds out they are intersex later, like in their teens, as opposed to at birth. Do non consensual surgeries also happen then? Are they equally welcomed by the intersex community?
Would also love to hear more about what the intersex community looks like in terms of what the current discourses are or what you are doing today as an activist in terms of projects?
Thanks again! Have a superb day!!

I'm kind of doing an awareness thing on my Facebook page, given the 26th of October is Intersex Awareness Day. (As if one day would do it, but we'll use what we can get.) On this UA-cam profile I use a gynandromorph butterfly as my avatar. It seemed fitting given my situation. I've used it in several places over the years. Right now I am using my work-in-progress take on the Intersex flag as my avatar on FB. (It comes with a Magneto quote!) I was going to show it to you here but alas, there isn't a way to do that.
As to other than the flag, I also kind of like the imagery of the male circle and female circle forming an infinity symbol crossing together as an X in a third centered circle. I have heard that is used a lot for Bisexual so not really available for Intersex. It could be argued that the more accurate "circle" symbol would be the male/female combo or the male and female and combo together on one circle, but I just haven't liked either of them much. So I keep experimenting. I need to break out of the "Icon" box maybe, but it has to be marketable, clearly referring to Intersex, and not owned by anyone else. I'm beginning to understand the backstory of the current Intersex flag. I actually have been expecting Anunnaki to say something about my flag avatar, but nothing yet. That means it hasn't been seen yet or I'm on my own with this one. lol
I haven't widely told people about me on my FB, or Twitter, or Instagram.... well, virtually anyone who has known me longer than 3 or 4 years is clueless save for my Tribe so they are probably wondering why this "Intersex thing" is happening. We'll see if they figure it out. I have no problem sharing the info with you but because of a few issues I have with some semantics that is more of a conversation than I want to have here, so I'm just not gonna say it here. Tragic I know!
In the mean time, I have linked some of my Intersex posts to some of your videos. I hope that isn't a problem. If it is please let me know. I mean, I'm not everyone's cup of tea and I've found a LOT of people who hate things about me, and also refuse to accept I don't about them, don't want me linking to their stuff. I could use it anyway, but I remove the link. So if you are okay with the links then great, and if not that's okay too. Ummm.... I guess if you are on Anunnaki's FB.... but that list is private save mutual friends.... Ah! I commented on his post about a movie he was watching today! Shared friends only if you are on his list then you can find the avatar!
You know.... I talk WAY too much.... Oh well!

Hahaha you are so right! I struggled with this flag for art Projects, too! The circle! The extremly saturated colors! It kills me! Hahaha! :,D But it means I just have to try harder.

    Lovely video, thanks Hans.
Do you think it's okay for me as a dyadic trans woman to also use XOXY since I'm in a similar situation chromosome-wise and I think it's hella sweet and punk?

    • @hihellohans
      @hihellohans  5 років тому +6

Hey Ronja. Really good question! Made me think for a while. While it's something that I think intersex women came up with, we certainly don't have a monopoly on the unexpected chromosome market. :P I don't see why anyone who's XY couldn't use it. Would be curious to know what other people think.

XOXO . I WAS TOLD IT MENT kisses and hugs . Opps . So sorry . Now what ?
The “O” on your neck sounds better . And the flag . Why do you need one ?
I understand that you wish for identification but you camouflage so well . Why ruin it ?

I thought claiming "angel" as a gender would start to make a lot of sense, the more you think about it: most people assume they don't exist, those who do hardly have seen one but sure have conflicting opinions on them, the "experts" on the topic will discuss endless details about them that may or may not be relevant or even sensible... and of course the reality of it is actually kinda eldritch / gross.

Intersex symbols . 🤔 . Let me see , because a natural intersex person should not have to relie on hair dies . That washes out or grows out . I like O for an indication . On your neck .
    I’ll kiss your neck .
But the crime aspect comes out too . A tattoo artist who doesn’t give a care . Some cultures use tattoos to tell stories , or indicate a crime history . Hmmm . Let’s see what options you present .
