Me too, for work 5610u it’s perfect and in free time automatic watches and some bigger g shocks.
I bought my first G-Shock on a whim in 2009 (G-100). I didn't really wear it, and it spent the next 14 years in storage under my bed. In 2023, now needing a watch for work, I got it out and it was STILL WORKING (original battery). Impressed by the longevity of the watch but feeling that a bulky 2009 G-100 didn't quite fit my style nowadays, I bought a GW-5610u. Unfortunately, I absolutely HATE the GW-5610u because I now do not have the need to buy another watch for the foreseeable future. I really want a GW-6900 but cannot justify it because the GW-5610u is so good. I've worn it every day for the last year and, despite some wear on the resin bracelet and bezel, it's perfect.
Oh go on, treat yourself! You're allowed a 5610 and a 6900!
Don’t deprive yourself, just buy the GW-6900, I did and have the both of them, you will not regret it!
I wore my original 5610 for work for about 4 years and both times when my daughters were born as it was the most accurate watch I had. This will never leave my side for sure :)
Wore my 6900 tough solar version for my son’s birth.. now I’m stuck with it forever. Too sentimental lol
I can’t overstate just how good the 5610U really is. I put mine on the Casio Composite Bracelet. Now it’s perfect for me.
Even though it’s a relatively cheap watch, it’s also probably one of the best watches ever created and really does deserve a place on the podium of greatest watches of all time.
I’m fortunate enough to have some high end watches. Whilst I think the 5 digit Rolex GMT Master is probably the best watch ever made, this Casio sits right there alongside it for a whole host of different reasons. I’ve considered buying another to keep as a spare in case they ever stop making it, it’s that good. Cant recommend it enough.
It’ll keep on telling the time long after any mechanical has given up the ghost.
I think it’s one of Casio’s best ever watches. It would be great if they eventually made one with a MIP display.
I absolutely love my 5610, I have the original one. Love that watch, best beater you can ask for. One corretion though, if I may. The 4 screws do NOT hold the strap, they hold the shrowd to the inner case housing the module. The strap is on normal lugs, just like any other watch.
I'm wearing my GW-M5610U today. I've got over 20 G- Shocks at this point, and this is hands down my favorite and most worn one. It offers so much functionality and looks good to boot! Best bang for your buck G Shock you can purchase imo, and I can't recommend it enough

Same for me. Got the 5610U first, upgraded to the 5000U after about 4 months and never went back 😅 It kept me company on 3 trips last year, two through several time zones. It is a true travel watch! And the only one you ever need
Excellent review again Russ, love my 5610u, such a great tool, I use it to set my mechanicals, I use it as a stopwatch as a USA swim coach, the light works as a small flashlight for 3 seconds, and got two more for my daughters who love it too. New Gshock fans for sure. Got to get that 5000 soon.
I got the 5610u a few months back. On the LED backlight, I believe it uses less battery than the EL one which is why you get the 3 seconds on option. I find it nice and bright too, so just like adding Tough Solar and MB6 I think it's just evolution. You're right, there is no better watch in the world in terms of what it does.

Don’t forget that the 5610u can work as a dual time watch since when you put it to world time mode, your local time is still visible. AND you can swap the two times’ positions. Could be worth the upgrade imo.

It’s official-I’m addicted to G-Shocks!! For proof, get this-I already had 3 of the “old” GWM-5610’s, but when the updated model came out, I had to get that one too, because I wanted the new features on the updated model. I also have 3 5600’s, 3 6900’s, and lots of other G’s..I should probably go to G-Shock rehab….😂😂
I have the 5610.. love it. Then my parents bought me the 5000u from Japan for £180 in a sale last week. It is more premium and a slightly different shape. I like the updated features and the clarity of the screen, much like the 5610u. But the 5610u is the true beater for the price
I love my 5610 and there’s a couple of quality of life improvements that make the updated version a great upgrade over previous version, not quite enough that I feel the need to replace my old faithful Square but someone looking to add a G Shock to their collection has a great watch waiting for them.

The 5610U was my first and only G Shock. Its perfect for what it is. The extra features for this version are very helpful. The world time features (such ad the easy swap for home time) where great when travelling to China (where it was also able to pick up the radio tower there).
Was my first g shock. Love it. Traveled to Thailand and used this watch. Time zone function worked great.

I have the blue version of this watch. I also love that the home time is displayed in the upper right of the World Time function so you can have dual time zones displayed at once.
Back light on the video doesn’t do the new light justice. It really is a big improvement
It’s a lot brighter, but man, it’s almost TOO bright at 3 in the morning! The EL light was easier on the eyes.
This watch is a home-run!

FYI Casio MRW-200H-1BVES diver is 12 quid at Argos! I got 4 and oil filled them for my nephew and some of my diver friends they love them. Such a cheap mod to get a unlimited divers watch.
Got it a few months back from Argos for 70ish quid.
In the end, vewing angle, comfort and alarm too quiet are the only issues I have with that watch. Funny how this screen is clearer than the gmwb5000 when you watch it from a straight angle tho !
EL screens tend to not be as clear in daylight, I've found this to be the case among all my retro/vintage tech.
Hi Russ, just a quick curveball alternative. I have a G5600ue. It’s basically a GWM5610u but without the multiband 6. The two main reasons I love it is without the atomic time keeping it gives me a personal connection to my watch that I wouldn’t have otherwise. If I want it to be the exact time I have to check it and set it personally just like a mechanical watch and I really like that. Also I much prefer the colour scheme which is the same as the DW5600. It’s an all round winner for me 👍
I have the cheapo 5600e, a 5610 and 5000U, I think im done for a while on G squares.
I have GW-M5610-1 since 2010. And The EL backlight still in good condition. Even the autolight is always ON.
The battery status also always on HIGH...in almost 15 years.
So...I dont know LED are good enough to replace EL-backlight. The other feature are good addition tho.
Casio G-Shock 5610u comes with 5 inaudible alarms. Why even bother with 1 if you can't hear them.
I bought one was disappointed and returned it. After reading some more wonder reviews I thought I would try again, perhaps it was just me. No it was still the same so it was once again returned with me swearing not to try one again.
I bought a Casio WV-200R-5ACF instead, less alarms etc and not solar but it will do me with a glass front, a bit of stainless steel surround, 200 mtrs water resist and it's a waveceptor (Multiband 5) and I can HEAR the alarm signals. Saved myself £60 and still have a tough accurate watch.
Wife's comment has to be one of the best to date 😅 Been there! 😂
It's the only G-Shock I own, and I love it. Don't even mind when it gets marked at work

I bought one of these last month and I wear it more than any other watch I own. I’m always body weight training, out on the mountain bike or wild camping. It’s made some of my other watches redundant. So much so I actually took one back to the shop lol. I am now eyeing up the GW-B5600CY-1ER. 😂

My son bought me the updated version in November and I wear it everyday for work. At weekends I wear a Hamilton khaki auto😊
Got mine for £70 from Argos! What a bargain for a super accurate GMT chronograph daily beater dive watch! 😁

I kinda like the ethereal led glow on my 5610u. It’s my main watch part of my everyday day kit
I have 5610U for more than 1 year. It's been a good work watch for me. It gains +3sec per month. I almost wear it all days. It's probably the most durable watch in the world by any meaning. It's kind of a watch that you don't need to baby sitting.
I'll keep my GW-M5600 😊
Nearly 13 years old and it still shows "H" charge level 👍🏻
Same thing for the GX-56 I bought 12 years ago. Even when kept away from light (in power saving mode) with a "M" charge level, they get H quickly with sun exposure.

I totally agree! Initially, I thought I was getting the 5610 from the G-Shock Canada website and, upon opening the box, they had sent me the “U” version by default and I was ecstatic!! 🤩
Love mine and it’s my go-to watch for everything. Period. (You can tell I don’t go out much 😅)

On my 6.25 inch wrist and it looks and feels great! I take it mataldetecting into the wild. It's always covered in sand and mood and it never lets me down. One downside is the clarity of the screen while looking at it from an angle - you can't see the numbers. Otherwise, it's great.
I got a model of the 5610u that has a blue ring (instead of red) and all the text is grey. I wear it more than all my other watches!

I was going to purchase this watch, but Australian price was approaching that of the GW5000U-1JF, so I opted for that instead, with the screw back. I prefer the mono-chrome look of the GW5000U-1JF

I've had this watch for a year and a half or so and it genuinely is the prrfect watch imo. I have the Dawin model which is basically the same but with vouetooth added. Its high art as a watch.
Having lots of Gshocks this is my favourite out of all of em i just dont think to date there is a better Gshock for the money they are!! every so often Argos drop it it £79.99 ... With its iconic look and functions its a no brainer G !!! Great review ...

I have to correct you on one or two things:There is no resin inner protector for this model.Only the crystal occilators(There are four) the trimmer and the mutiband 6 antenna are protected.
It would be nice if Casio brought out a variant with Bluetooth+Solar instead of Multiband 6+Solar for use in those areas where Multiband 6 does not work, or for people who travel between time zones, priced around the 100 pound/dollar mark.
A lot of the new more affordable Bluetooth only models require battery changes every 2 years or so, and those batteries will of course run out when you're in a place that does not have a watchmaker. Which reminds me, I have to get the batteries swapped in two watches...

You have reignited my love for Casio and G-shock. I watched your original zombie apocalypse watch vid and it made me think, “what would be my perfect zombie apocalypse G?”
I picked the GWX-5600-1JF with solar, MB6 that has the additional tide and moon phase. For me Solar is a no brainer, and the MB6 will let you know if there are any interruptions in critical infrastructure if it doesn’t update.
The reason I chose moon phase and tide are food and escape reasons. High tides will bring in fish and low tide can help you come and by boat or swimming. Knowing the phase of the moon will help concealment at night. No moon nights are the best for escape or evade. Thank you again for helping me continue my G-ourney. 😎

LED uses less power, you can use the light far more often. I think the usage and battery life estimates in the manual reflect this.
IMO the G-Shock 9052 might be the best damn watch money can buy and at around $50, it's a unicorn of watches. I wear it almost every single day and it still looks like new.
It keeps perfect time, has 200M water resistance, Casio's nice "Illuminator" light, displays day of week, date, and time on the main page, and has a countdown timer AND stop timer for around $50.
What a unicorn of a watch.

Hmmm, watch out for the negative version of the update. I've got the update on and I bought the negative update for my nephew. I'd have probably sent it back if it was for me, not that legible and the reflections, which are not really a problem on the regular version, really block the screen on the dark version.
My wrist is 6 3/4" and i guess it's more flat than round. The 5610u is almost too small lug to lug compared to my 5000u-1 which is perfect. Bought the 5000u because i wasn't pleased with the 5610 sizewise.
I bought some JaysandKays strap adapters for the 5610 which i haven't put on yet.
It took you long enough to get the U. 😀 I've had it for more than a year and I love it.
I'm (Mississippi) over 1,100 miles from the North American Atomic Time transmitter (Colorado) and I have zero issues receiving atomic time updates on my Citizen Blue Angels A-T and my 4 G-Shock Multi-Band 6 watches. I've had some trouble when I've been in Orlando, FL though it's wasn't impossible to receive.
I love my 5610u, it's great. Sometimes I wish they'd make a version with fixed/screwed bars just for that extra toolyness.
Great watch - I have really enjoyed mine. The only thing I would change is the date presentation. It seems a little lacking and out of proportion much of the year. Mine catches a signal 9 out of 10 nights updating the time from the atomic clock in Colorado.
A true Casio Classic - bought my 5610 a few years back now and stuck it on the combi bracelet (that cost more than the watch! 😂 - it’s just perfection and will probably outlast all of us, that 5040 is defo on my G List… nice one MWC
Entertaining presentation! :) I'm trying to find a simply watch with an auto-repeat timer which can be set down to 10 seconds. I can find many watches with auto-repeat, but the minimum setting is 1 minute. I must prefer a classic looking watch with a metal casing. Can you help? Fingers crossed!
My 5610 is 9 years old and has the most wrist time and the EL light died years ago. But I see no point to upgrade unless my battery dies. But even then the battery replacement is $10. This is a meh if you already own the 5610. Great review!
GW-5610U (the new one) has a new feature that has not been mentioned here I think. The month and day in the date window can now be set to display as DD.MM (for example 17.06 for 17th of June instead 06.17 as it is with the old model).

Love my 5610U... But.... It has an issue.... The alarm and countdown timer are usless as the sound is sooooo quiet.
Have the old and new U version. Love the new module best...and Led light is brighter😅. My EDC are both the GW 5000 U and GWM 5610 U. Price point the GWM5610 U is a better choice for its intended use...😊

It appears that Casio is dropping the U SKU and they're all the updated models now. It's back to just being the 5610-1 again.

I have two G-Shocks, the basic 5600 and the 5610u. Unfortunately, I very seldom wear them. I prefer analog watches. The 5600 is my gym watch, i only wear it at the gym. My 5610 is sitting on my window sill all day, soaking up sunlight. This is my reference watch. I use it to set all my other timepieces. It sets itself every day at 3 am and the atomic clock sync works flawlessly. Personally, I very much prefer the white LED backlight of the 5610u over the EL light. Suits my eyes better.
The 5610 is perfect except for the strap. Mine is on a black Barton silicon on adapters and i can't recommend doing it enough
I own both and prefer the new version. The addition of real time in stopwatch and timer is a massive plus, like the old Gs jad😢. One thing Russell, the screws only hold the shroud on, not the strap. I removed the strap, added strap adapters, and now wear it on a black NATO. Far more comfy. It's my fav G. 👍
Ahhh ! My Russel is back with Casio and G-shocks. I thought I lost him to Oris, Hamilton, Rolex, Tudor... A bit disappointed about the announcement of electrolum last 10% of the led backlight. I was thinking of keeping my dw-5610w for decades to come 😢.
My dw5600 with EL backlight works just fine after 12-13 years, but I don't use the backlight often. It's only 'minus' is that it's a bit less accurate now (I feel like it gains a minute or so per month, but that's not really a problem). And I changed the battery only once, maybe 3 years ago. So if you don't use the backlight every time you put it on, it should be ok for a long time.
Sage advice - can't see any reason to change if you have the old one (change to 'proper' date format might be a reason though) but a great buy if you don't.

I own the GW M5600 which I've had for around 15 years now. Battery still sitting at high and still on its original strap. Love this time piece. Just ordered the GW M5610U 1ER based on this video. However, I'm curious to know what others think about the trend of modding this particular watch? Will changing the shroud/bezel and bracelet into say a titanium one impact on its durability and if so to what extent?
The G-Shock G-5600UE-1JF (has everything, except the time sincro): Less expensive and with the new module, for those of us that don't live near a time transmitter antenna

Bought the 5600 black metal version one and kinda disappointed about the screen cuz its difficult to read plus the lack of the red line and the logos makes it less gshockier 👀
I think in the new model we get more accurate world times as it takes into account DLS time for all zones.
I have the new version and spent 2 weeks in spain diving swimming and out on jet skis and it hasn't missed a beat. I wear it more than my Tissot prc 200
I've had one for under a year and I love it, but a couple of months ago it stopped receiving the atomic signal, so I need to figure out how to troubleshoot it.

@@MayTheSchwartzBeWithYou I ended up downloading an app, Radio Watch Sync, that sends the signal from the phone/app to the watch. It worked on the second try.
Not being able to change the date format to dd.mm is a dealbreaker for me. So it’s the new one for me.

Do you find the alarm to be a bit on the quiet side?
I've slept through mine a few times. people say it's not designed to wake you up, but there is a 'SNOOZE' alarm, which implies some sleepage going on the intention.
The Gs with the dual LEDs are insanely bright😊

That's interesting that the updated 5610u has a clearer screen, I already thought the old version had the most legible watch LCD I've ever seen. I just bought the updated DW-5600U and while the LCD is fine on it's own, I was surprised at how crap it looks next to the 5610. It's not as clear, doesn't have as much contrast, and everything is also a little smaller. This new module is also in the G-5600ue-1, which is what I'll be getting soon to replace the DW-5600u I just got.
Love MWC vids and my 5610u, OG Frogman GWF-100-1JF is on the way from Japan now! 5000 next. G-9000-3vdr is next based on Russ’s recommendation!
I still prefer the EL backlight. I guess it’s a good thing since LEDs do last longer but i just prefer the vintage look of the EL.
